"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love" - Albus Dumbledore

Hi, I'm Laura. I'm a senior in college & I'm slowly deciding what I want to do with my life. I love Harry Potter, coffee, writing, and sleeping (amongst other things). I'll never claim to know everything, but I'm confident in my ability to help people with their problems. Feel free to send me an inbox question; I'll get back to you!

A few thoughts I've gathered from my teenage years (and being on this site for most of them!):
1. If you Google song lyrics, the song will come up 99% of the time.
2. Dress to fit your body type, and buy the size that fits. If you're a size 6, squeezing into a 4 won't make you look skinnier. It makes you look fat when you aren't.
3. You will never regret waiting to lose your virginity.
4. There is such a thing as a stupid question, but we're all allowed to ask them.

BU 2014 :)

advice

Ohkay so, ; My doctors french, and im french but more english... but when my doctor was showing me how to use my pills etc.. he put the sticker dates in french.. so when i got home i put it on as in english.. but then i thought it fell off so the one that was crumpled up i put it on ... i started the pill on a sunday.. and this said i started it on a saturday which got my two days messed up ...

I took 2 of my birthcontrol pills yesterday because it was friday yesterday and the sticker date said i missed Thursday's pill.. so i took both of them... but today i went to take my pill, and realized that the sticker was the wrong one when it fell off again ! (which was really not the right sticker because the one under neath said i started on a sunday which i did and the one that fell off said saturday) .. now what do i do for tonights pill ? i took it yesterday :S

Take the next pill in your pack. Just keep taking one pill a day until the end of the pack. As long as you take one every day you should be fine. Since you doubled up, your period might be a day early, but you should be fine.

You should use back-up methods of birth control for the first 2-3 packs to be safe (that's what my doctor said, anyway, haha). The sticker isn't a requirement, as long as you remember what day the pack starts - the sticker just helps people remember. If you have a cell phone, set a daily alarm to remember, too.

hey i have dark brown hair and ive had blonde highlights before and liked them and was thinking about getting them again. I wanna get alot of blonde on the top of my head like partial highlights almost and i cant find any pics of brown hair with lots of blonde highlights focusing on the top. I do still want it to look like i have brown hair underneath. Any help with finding pics would be great! thanks i do rate! :)

It also should be easy to explain to your hair stylist what you want. The style is pretty self-explanatory. They'll probably want to know how much of the hair you want left alone and what percentage you want to be highlighted.

hi just wanted to ask I am small girl with big boobs size almost fills Dcup do guys like them or is it just too big is turn off?

Generally guys just like breasts. They aren't too picky and a guy who is close enough with you to be seeing yours shouldn't care. At any rate, he should like you for more than that :)

While small girls with large breasts are sometimes seen as "looking fake" (because some people think skinny + large breasts = implants), as long as yours are real, it probably won't matter at all. Just as everyone has their preferences when it comes to eye color, height, hair color, whatever, men often have a certain preference when it comes to bra size. However, like I said before, that in itself isn't usually a dealbreaker. A guy probably won't say, "Yeah, she's wicked pretty and all, but I wish she was a C cup..." Get what I mean?

Just don't be hanging out of your tops 24/7 and pushing them up to your chin. That's a different type of girl entirely, and probably not the kind you want to be :)

So, I'm 16 years old. When I was 4 years old I got a tiny splinter. I pulled most of it out back then. But I left a small piece. It never hurt. Its still in my hand, its aprox. less than 2mm. It can pass as a tiny birth mark. Can it harm me? Its not stiff anymore, I can't feel it, and its slowly starting to fade. Once in a blue moon I get a sewing needle & scrape skin off of the area. That gets rid of a bit of it. But can this little splinter harm me? Will it eventually fall out as dead skin?

My dad had a tip of a pencil stuck in his hand over thirty years ago. He's alive and well, and after being told it was harmless, chose to leave it in there as a conversation starter. He's had a lot of injuries like that and this one is either still in there or it worked its way out on its own. I know that isn't too helpful, but I figured it'd be good to know you're not alone haha.

Obviously some things are quite dangerous to have in your skin & you should probably ask a doctor about taking it out next time you get the chance. Since it's been in your skin for 12 years and causing no problems, you're probably fine.

Since you can see it, it's probably not far in your skin. A doctor or nurse could cut it out pretty easily if you wanted some peace of mind about it. They know best, though, and could be more helpful than we could.

The subject is fairly self explanatory.
I don't go out very much and I don't have a lot of money. (that makes me sound like a hobo. I'm not a hobo. just saying.)
But are there any home remedies that can be used to.. what's the word? help? To solve acne problems? Something like that.
But yeah, if anyone knows of anything like that, that can help that'd be great! :)

I actually answer these kinds of questions a lot. I've used most brands of acne cleansers through the years & can tell you about a lot of prescriptions too. (At one point, my dermatologist basically adopted a "let's throw stuff at it and see what sticks" method. My skin was horrendous...)

ANYWAY, I got pretty desperate and had sensitive skin, and started looking into home remedies. I consider these to be "almost free" because while it still costs money if you don't already have the materials in the house, it's cheap and you can use the things for other purposes.

Aspirin and honey as a mask. Get the cheap, crappy aspirin tablets. They're uncoated, not great for people with sensitive stomachs, and dissolve in your mouth in like two seconds. Get four of those and put them in a small dish/bowl. Put a few drops of water on them and they should dissolve pretty quickly. Mix in a small dab of honey, and apply to your face like a mask. It's messy - and if it's hot, the honey can melt and this could get in your eye, so be careful & be ready with a facecloth to catch any drips. And, don't eat it, obviously haha. Once it dries (or starts to get itchy), rise it off completely. You may want to use a gentle face wash or toner after, to remove the stickiness.

Why this works: Honey is a natural antiseptic, and aspirin and one of the acids in acne medications (I think salicylic) are both derived from the same thing. You can read more about this here:
And obviously don't use this if you're allergic to either ingredient.

Lemon juice also works. I'm not sure why, but it does. A friend of mine on this site (Cux) originally told me about this, but he hasn't been answering questions lately. So, I offer his idea as a potential solution. Use it as you would a spot treatment. Apply it with a cotton ball or Qtip a couple times a day. Bottled lemon juice works fine for this. Same as before, if you're allergic to lemons don't do this!

Also, have you considered giving your skin a break? Sometimes during the winter I won't do anything besides wash & moisturize, and I use a bar soap or soap-free cleanser. Sometimes, teens (and adults, but generally people new to breaking out) go overboard on one "tiny" breakout, and they irritate their skin and create more problems. Go easy for a couple weeks and see if anything improves.

Hope this helps you a bit; send me an inbox question if you want to know anything else :)

So about 2 years ago I donated blood. A week or two later I got something in the mail telling me my blood type and it also came with like a little card. The thing is, I lost that, & am not completely sure I remember what my blood type is. I tried going on to the website to see if I could type in my information or something & it would have it stored or something...? I kind of need to know. Rather than going to get my blood tested or something does anyone know if there's another way to find this out based on my previous blood donation? (I'm not doing it again anytime soon... bad experience)

Most places will issue you a duplicate card. Call them up and talk to someone. I've heard that some hospitals print blood type on birth certificates. This isn't a requirement though, so don't go to huge lengths just to find it.

Who knows of some good mood music, you know for getting in the "Mood"? Like Billy Joel's just the way you are, 80s style love songs like that. It's kinda a joke towards my girlfriend cause she listens to that type of music and I don't so I have no idea where to start looking for that. If anyone could give me a list or find one on the internet somewhere that would be sweet. Thanks

How can I tell my mother I want to go to the gynecologist by myself without telling her that I'm not a virgin?

I have been to the doctor before when I had some menstrual problems earlier this year, but she didn't perform a full check-up and I lied to her about being a virgin.

The reason I ask this question is because when I went to the doctor before, my mother refused to allow me in alone. She forced me to sign the form that allowed her to accompany me.

If you and your mom are't very close, just tell her you're not comfortable with her in the room. It's a pretty personal checkup and you definitely don't need a ton of people in the room.

Could you get a ride to the doctor with someone else? Maybe a close aunt could take you? If not, call your doctor before the appointment (if possible) and explain that your mom refuses to let you in the room alone, and see if you could fill out a questionnaire without her hearing the answers to any such questions.

Or, just don't sign the form. If you're under 18, you have different privacy rights, but your doctor or the nurse at the office may be able to explain to your mom that it should be a patient's choice to go in the room alone.

Do you otherwise get along with your mom? Could you ask her why she wants to be in the room so badly? She might have guessed already what you're trying to hide from her. Or, tell her "Listen Mom, I really appreciate that you want me to be healthy and see a gynecologist, but I'm not comfortable having anyone else in the room with me. Would you mind sitting in the waiting room?"

By the way, if your doctor is a male, there should be another person in the room with you already, because it's the policy of most (if not all) offices, to prevent potential allegations and whatnot. That might be what your mom's worried about - being alone with the doctor for such an intimate exam. The best thing in this situation is probably talking to your mom about it. Alternately, you could go to a doctor on your own, but you probably wouldn't be under your parents' insurance there.

i have a spyware called Street Ads Browser Enhancer in my programs. i have tried to uninstall it but it starts to uninstall and then says Au-exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. it wont uninstall the program. can anyone help??

I've had s many infections on my computer even though I have a virus remover program. Should I just get a laptop already?

Before you get a new computer, download the program Malwarebytes. I use it all the time and it finds minor infections like spyware and adware that my AVG doesn't detect.

Here's a legit site you can download it from.

It's important, especially with older computers, to have your anti-virus software up to date. Make sure you have a firewall. Run "Disk defragmenter" and do general things to make your computer faster: http://www.wikihow.com/Speed-Up-a-Slow-Windows-Computer-for-Free

Don't delete anything that could be important, like registry files. If you have a lot of files on the computer, considering storing them on an external drive. I have this one and use it for backup (you can get them much cheaper in stores)

i usually wear pads but im going swimming with my friends in 6 days but my period last 9 days and ive only been on it for 1 day and so i was wondering if i swim with a tampon in if i will still bleed

You'll still have your period, but tampons are designed for this situation exactly. Put a new one in right before you swim, and change it as soon as you can afterwards. You'll be fine!

i Like Him But He has A Girlfriend / ?

Well, this is quite vague...

Anyway, back off. You don't want to be the person to break up a couple just to be with the guy. That's a wicked bitchy move. Also, if you try to hook up with this guy to make him like you, leave his girlfriend, and start dating you, who's to say he wouldn't do the same to you?

Anyway, I'm guessing there's more to this story. Be more specific and my advice will be too! :)

hey i asked a question about this a week ago..i need 6000 for tuition books and a computer for college. this is after all the grants and loans included in my finanical aid package. as far as i know i cant get any more direct loans or anything like that. i tried a outside loan but i need a cosigner but everyone in my family has horrible credit..so now im like stuck and cant go to school because i need 6000 and cant find a cosigner? what do i do? it sucks that my family is retarded and doesnt care about what turns out. i have to do everything on my own =[ please help

Got any close family friends with decent credit? If not, try contacting the financial aid office and explaining your situation. They may know of some loans that don't require a cosigner. Keep in mind that the interest rate will be higher; but it will be worth it in the end.

Many schools also have tuition pay programs, which allow you to pay your balance throughout the school year as opposed to all at once. If you have savings at all, you could pay for as much as you can now, then pay the rest in small payments over many months. My school doesn't charge for this service; again, the financial aid office will be your best resource. They may even be able to get you a better work study award or something similar.

Good luck!

How often should I put IcyHot on my knee? Just when it hurts or throughout the day?

The side of the box and tube should have instructions, too. If it says "apply every x amount of hours", do that, if it hurts at that time. If it doesn't, and says something like "use as needed" you can use it whenever you need it. Follow the directions on the container.

Also, try using ice or hot packs (depending on the injury) as a non-medicated alternative. Just be careful to not do hot/cold at once or right afterwards; it could cause some damage, or more pain.

I'm getting a laptop, that will be used for school and light gaming. very light gaming. anyway, i've gotten it down to these three:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+Inspiron+Laptop+/+AMD+Athlon%26%23153%3B+II+X2+Processor+/+15.6"+Display+/+4GB+Memory+/+320GB+Hard+Drive+-+Obsidian+Black/

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-AS5552-3452/15689192
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215126

So, I really like the dell, because its the cheapest. lol i'm using my own money, and well, i'd like to save as much money as possible for future expenses, because college will add up fast. haha

but i also don't want a trashy laptop. so, which one?

*if you know any other laptops in this price range, let me know. :)

Inspiron laptops have always felt super cheap to me; they're kind of flimsy. If you get a Dell, I'd recommend the Studio line, they seem to be better made. However, they've probably gotten better in the past two years, so if it feels solid in your hands, they probably are. I've seen them around campus and they didn't seem to be falling apart, haha.

A couple of my friends have Acer laptops and they seem pretty solid. If you're buying it in a store, I'd try them out before you bought them. I also highly recommend getting a backlit keyboard. I love my laptop but HATE trying to type at night. It's worth the extra money and/or ordering time.

I have an HP laptop. It was 700 dollars last year, and is probably cheaper this year. Here is a similar model (looks-wise, not so much specifications) in your price range:
- http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Starting+price&v1=Under+%24400&series_name=g6t_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/Under_$400/g6t_series

Honestly, if you're willing to sink about $100 more into this laptop, you'll get a LOT more options. And, if you take care of it, it should last you for years and you'll appreciate the upgraded features. You could easily get a nice laptop in your price range though; just a suggestion!

Oh, and Built NY cases are the best laptop cases, hands-down. Target cases are kind of shapeless and cheap-feeling:
They come in all different sizes and colors on Amazon, search "built laptop sleeve [# of inches your laptop is]"
Again, worth it, it protects your investment, and they are wicked nice looking.

Many colleges also offer discounts on Microsoft Office, and you get every program (even publisher). My school offers it for $39, and my friend can get it for $25. So look in to that, and try not to pick a laptop just based on that.

Today i was researching some colleges in the area that i would like to attend. I am a junior this year and i figured i should get a head start on making a decision. Anyhow, my highschool requires 3 years of a social studies which i will be fulfilling. this year i dropped my social studies to take accounting 1. im concern is that i am looking into a college that requires 4 years of social science. i am wondering if they would reject me for only having 3. i will fulfill all of the other requirements. (4 years of english, 4 of mathematics, 4 years of a foreign language, 4 years of natural science including 4 years of labratory experience, and electives.)

here is a link to the college requirements: http://www.moravian.edu/default.aspx?pageid=3654

You'll probably be fine, especially if you took the accounting class to get familiar with the subject for college. You have double the lab experience, and theology may fulfill the social science requirement (because it's a class you're receiving credit for).

Depending on the college, you might have to take an extra social science requirement once you're enrolled. Don't make a big deal out of it though - submit your application and transcript and see what they say. If there's a space on the application to do so, maybe emphasize that you've taken classes above and beyond requirements to expand your knowledge in additional subject areas.

This should help reassure you too:

I think you're fine; good luck!

I'm taking Tilia FE , and I've been taking this birth control for about 7 months.
I took a pill 12 hours late during the first week,i'm now on my last week, and i dont have any pre-symptoms of getting my period, my breasts dont hurt and i dont have cramps .
is there a possibility i'm pregnant ?

It's unlikely. You can miss one pill (and double the next dose) without the effectiveness being reduced (source: BC packet). There is a super small chance but if you've been taking it right besides that, you should be okay. If you miss your period, take a test. You could be stressing about this and missing period symptoms as a result.

Hi!!! So at my school they have a dress code. I really hate it because it doesn't give you a lot of options. Here it is:
NO JEANS (I really hate that.)
No denim
Must wear collared shirts
Cannot be low cut
No jeggings or treggings or whatever they call them
No bright colors
Makeup must be minimal and not a distraction
No excessive jewelry
Skirts, skorts, and shorts must be exactly or below two inches above knee (I'm serious about this one. They will literally come after you with a ruler)
Any ideas for cute styles? Any popular clothing stores that sell school uniform styles? Thanks!
Oh, and if it helps, I'm in middle school

Old Navy does uniform sales this time of year, you can get some cheap polos and long skirts.

I think you'll have a lot of luck at Kohl's. Their fall styles are super cute and they've always been relatively conservative with short and skirt lengths. Plus, long skirts are "in" this year so they'll be plenty in stores (and you won't have to worry about bending over for something). Fall color trends also seem to be muted, dark colors so there will be plenty around. Try getting shorts from the misses' section. Knee-length styles are more popular there, and some brands don't go up to your armpits, either. Sonoma is super comfy (and is the grown-up version of the "So" brand they sell in the juniors department, last I checked). And they have nice jewelry sales, and not all of it is loud and "excessive". :)

American Eagle sells tons of pant styles now, I've even seen skinny khakis... definitely check those out. You could also get button-down shirts. make sure you can button them up pretty high, for the low-cut rule.

Makeup:

only search advicenators.com

Try adding your eye color to the search to get custom results "natural makeup look for brown eyes" or "for day".

I've been known to wear black yoga pants with a long shirt, if your dress code doesn't forbid sweatpants I'd look in to that. It feels like pajamas but looks almost pulled together.

Oh, and try not to complain about the dress code so much. They're just trying to create a safe learning environment for the students that is age-appropriate. My town's elementary schools completely forbid makeup, and the middle school is allowed to use discretion with super distracting makeup. The jeans thing seems kind of excessive, but they must have their reasons.

why do my nipples itch and why are they a little sore.

There's a wide variety of reasons. Most likely, you have dry skin. Try using moisturizer as you would on your legs, arms, etc. after your shower. In the summer, this can become especially common because of the hot weather, and when mixed with water, sand, chlorinated pools, salt water, and tanning, that makes for some pretty dry skin!

As for soreness, that's common too. Unless it's an absolutely excruciating pain, it's normal. You retain more water during certain days of your cycle (it's different for everyone) and your breasts get bumped around a lot more than you realize. Wear a supportive bra that isn't too tight or too loose, or try going braless for a night or two if you don't already to see if the soreness lessens.

Hey guys,
I don't know If anyone will be able to help me but I'm dying to get a good penne pollo recipe!
It's like this creamy chicken pasta dish.. the sauce isn't too thick or heavy its different to a carbonara. I know there is garlic in it chicken and penne pasta that is about it lol.
There is this restaurant I love that does it..but I would find it rude asking for the recipe!
Does anyone have any recipes or ideas for it? I tried to make it on instinct and it went very wrong!
Google doesn't have some great results so I came here :)
Any help would be appreciated.
-Jess

Recipe sites like Allrecipes.com, food.com, and recipezaar.com would be good places to look.
^ lots of categories to go through

The recipes often have comments and feedback from people who cook them, and they often provide their own suggestions such as "if you like (insert popular restaurant's dish here) you should double the garlic" or whatever.

If it's a popular/chain restaurant (basically, not a single diner down the street) try doing a Google search of "[restaurant name] [entree name] recipe" like "Cheesecake Factory Cajun Jambalaya Pasta Recipe". This will get you copycat recipes, suggestions, and sometimes the actual companies will give you a recipe for a certain part of the dish.

Many nutrition pages of popular chains now list ingredients, so try investigating the company website. They may even sell their sauces/dressings in a local store - a few restaurants do that from where I live, and many are small chains (as in one location). It's definitely worth looking into.

An added bonus of making it yourself is that you can alter the ingredients to make it healthier, if you so choose. For example, you could use low-fat cheese or reduced fat milk, or leave out an ingredient you hate (I always leave out capers, those things are disgusting...)

Have fun experimenting with recipes!
