School Dress Code

Question Posted Wednesday August 3 2011, 3:14 am

Hi!!! So at my school they have a dress code. I really hate it because it doesn't give you a lot of options. Here it is:
NO JEANS (I really hate that.)
No denim
Must wear collared shirts
Cannot be low cut
No jeggings or treggings or whatever they call them
No bright colors
Makeup must be minimal and not a distraction
No excessive jewelry
Skirts, skorts, and shorts must be exactly or below two inches above knee (I'm serious about this one. They will literally come after you with a ruler)
Any ideas for cute styles? Any popular clothing stores that sell school uniform styles? Thanks!
Oh, and if it helps, I'm in middle school

Wear a collared shirt but a light colored shirt.. wear make up but use a fade color and light eyeshadow that matches the shirt :) and your outfit wear simple pearl earings or diamond or colored diamond earings a simple not explict necklace maybe a small bracelet nothing big and over the top... and to that oufit wear either skirts sdkorts or shorts but long ones.. , but I dont know any stores that sell school uniform styles.. you can try something professional like suzies or try something delicate like costa blanca or fairweather , le chateau is too much here are some examples :

make up : [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

clothing : [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

notice the colors not bright not clashy they are delicate and plain..

Old Navy does uniform sales this time of year, you can get some cheap polos and long skirts.

I think you'll have a lot of luck at Kohl's. Their fall styles are super cute and they've always been relatively conservative with short and skirt lengths. Plus, long skirts are "in" this year so they'll be plenty in stores (and you won't have to worry about bending over for something). Fall color trends also seem to be muted, dark colors so there will be plenty around. Try getting shorts from the misses' section. Knee-length styles are more popular there, and some brands don't go up to your armpits, either. Sonoma is super comfy (and is the grown-up version of the "So" brand they sell in the juniors department, last I checked). And they have nice jewelry sales, and not all of it is loud and "excessive". :)

American Eagle sells tons of pant styles now, I've even seen skinny khakis... definitely check those out. You could also get button-down shirts. make sure you can button them up pretty high, for the low-cut rule.

Try adding your eye color to the search to get custom results "natural makeup look for brown eyes" or "for day".

I've been known to wear black yoga pants with a long shirt, if your dress code doesn't forbid sweatpants I'd look in to that. It feels like pajamas but looks almost pulled together.

Oh, and try not to complain about the dress code so much. They're just trying to create a safe learning environment for the students that is age-appropriate. My town's elementary schools completely forbid makeup, and the middle school is allowed to use discretion with super distracting makeup. The jeans thing seems kind of excessive, but they must have their reasons.

Wow, what a strict dress code. With that I would almost rather having a set uniform so I wouldn't have to worry about putting outfits together.

First off, I would invest in khaki pants. You can get them at American Eagle or Aeropostle and you can get them pretty fitted, so you can show some shape.

For the warmer months, you can get some bermuda shorts (try Old Navy) or capris.

I don't know if you are into Polo shirts, but you can get them at any 'preppy' store like Abercrombie, American Eagle, Aero, or Ralph Lauren if you want some designer ones. You can get these in a variety of colors or just neutrals.

I have black denim pants, maybe you can get away with something like that.

I suggest trying to push your limits a little and wearing a skirt with non-transparent tights underneath. Or you can do dresses with tights. Try to find dresses that tie or can be belted at the waist, so you can show off your figure while covering up the rest of you. Sweater dresses are really cute for fall and winter.

For jewelry, I would get classic pieces like pearl/diamond studs (cheap at Claires) and you can mix and match bracelets like a few silver bangles with a pearl bracelet. A big, 'statement' watch can also add a sophisticated vibe while being practical, so no one can call you out on it!

What can be really stylish and appropriate is a blazer. I got a really cute, fitted one at Kohls and I love to wear it out to give a polished vibe.

To show off some style and wear pieces that arent so conservative, you can layer them. Throw a lacy cami under a sweater so it peeks out, or put a cardigan that buttons up over a going out shirt.

Can you wear scarves? I know girls who wear a low cut top but layer a scarf on top to cover any cleavage.

You can probably find clothing you can work with at just about any store, it just depends how you wear it. Try your typical mall stores like the ones I mentioned above and Forever 21 or H&M, as well as department stores like Macy's.

Try going shopping with your friends and you can share ideas. Be creative!

Good luck,

-Abby
