about

I've been away for a while due to a serious illness and subsequent health issues.

Favourite quotes of the moment:

The children of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years - Even in biblical times men wouldn't ask for directions!

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. whatever we do to the thread, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. - Chief Seattle.

We spend the first 12 months of a child's life teaching them to walk and talk. We spend the next 12 years telling them to sit down and shut up!

As you slide down the bannisters of life, may the splinters never be pointing the wrong way.

May you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

I've been very happily married since August 1980 to a wonderful man and have beautiful twin girls, now aged 31. Both are married to wonderful young men and one of our girls has recently made us grandparents to a beautiful, smart and feisty granddaughter. I studied geology with the Open University. I am retired from being a manager in a large UK based insurance company which I actually quite enjoyed. (How sad is that?). I love anything to do with the environment and wildlife and try to do my bit for preservation and conservation. I would like there to be a decent world for our grandchildren to inherit. I also have CFS so find life a bit of a challenge at times but always hope for better health in the future.

I have a deep interest in the spiritual and the paranormal worlds, having experienced several incidents myself, and have been involved in meditation groups and groups that (safely) explore the paranormal. There is more to this life than we would normally credit, so an open mind is always the best option. You're not so likely to get caught by surprise!

I have a deep fascination for anything to do with Ancient Egypt, as you can probably tell by my name. I have statues and paintings all around the house. As my hubby has a similar interest in Native Americans, we tend to have a lot of unusual wall decorations, like a tomahawk.

I love cars, especially vintage ones, but my all time favourite has to be the Bugatti Chiron, what a car!

I have had a lot to do with animals over the years. I have fostered many, helped to set up a wildlife charitable hospital and raised a diverse range of young animals from bats to fox cubs and different species of birds, even a baby deer! I have had great pleasure in sharing my life and home with a number of animals over the years, most of them rescues. I am currently sponsoring an Amur Tiger, they are such beautiful cats and desperately need help, there are so few of them left. I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to meet some Aye-Aye's and Livingstone's Bats, a truly wonderful experience. We now have three cats, Oliver and Mollie, a brother and sister, he's a ginger and she's a tortoiseshell and a black and white called Daisy. She arrived in a taxi and was left on our doorstep in a cat carrier with the message that 'they knew we loved cats and would be good to her'. She has settled down well and gets on wonderfully with the other two.

If you have a pet that is showing ANY signs of illness or distress, please, please, please take it to a vet! Even if finance is an issue, work that out later. It is cruel to leave an animal suffering for any reason. Most animals do not show signs of illness until they have been ill for some time, basic instinct tells them it is a display of vulnerability, and certain death in the wild. Their instincts have not caught up with domesticity.

I do feel that we should all treat others as we would wish to be treated. Bad karma comes back to haunt us.

well i have asthma and i need to know some ways to make me a better runner

i run varsity track and i am fast but i can never complete our workouts or even complete a 400 meter without having to stop. i currently use an inhaler before i run but and ive been told the more i push myself the better my asthma will get but that isnt what happens i just feel worse and get sick to my stomach and light headed

im going to the doctors soon but until then what are some things i can do to build up my stamina but wont get me out of breath because i know the more you run the better you get but i want to get better but i cant increase my workout and need something else to do where i can get the same effect

I think maybe you shouldn't push yourself until you've seen your doctor. You don't say how often or how much you are training but it is possible you are overdoing it. You may also find that your inhaler is no longer the best one for you, the doctor should be able to check this. You should also mention your training schedule. I have bad asthma and I understand about the pushing yourself in exercise thing but sometimes we need to accept our limitations so that we don't wreck what health we have. Good luck.

For no reason at all, I keep blacking out. It happens very often and I don't know why. What should I do? My mom told me its because I need to excersize more...is she right? Please Help.

It's nothing to do with exercise, you need to see a doctor and as soon as possible. It may be nothing serious, but it could also be petit mal which is a form of mild epilepsy, in which you lose consciousness briefly. Your doctor should be able to do some tests on you to check out what the problem is. Good luck.

My sunday school teacher says it's wrong being a vegeterian.
Well... to my friend she showed scriptures and stuff sayign that it's wrong to be a vegetarian. and i'm like what's the heck.
so anyway i found a scripture that says it's okey being a vegetarian and that's a sin to be racist against people who are vegeterians.
So anyway I plan to debate this whole thing out.

Can you please give me some supporting vegetarians scriptures or a website which can tell me where to find a debate on this topic?

Your Sunday school teacher is wrong to try to force her opinions on others. There is nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, it's a lifestyle choice, that's all. We all make decisions based on what we know and feel, to eat meat or not is just one of them. As vegetarians are not a race there is no racism involved.
Your teacher should be encouraging you all to think for yourselves and to explore how you feel about the world, she should not be telling you what to think. There are various websites that will give you information, maybe you could suggest to her that she takes a look at them?

my dog is a maltese and turning 2 years old [ i guess 14 in dog years ] and lately has been barking a lot at night. he used to when he first got here but stopped. about a week ago he started to bark after everyone goes to sleep. so i have to keep going down stairs and wake up and either hit his cage or take him out to the garage for him to run around and come in...but he keeps barking a few minutes after i go up. what should i do? should i try to tire him out by running with him or something right before we go to sleep? or will that have an opposite effect and have him wanting to play more? please i'm desperate - i havn't been able to sleep at all because i'm the only one who is willing to go downstairs. thanks in advance.

Something has started to bother him at night. Are there any unfamiliar noises or has something changed in the house to unsettle him? If nothing has changed try taking him for a good run last thing at night, settle him with water, make sure he is not too cold or hot and has something comfortable to sleep on. Is it really necessary to keep him in a cage? He could be objecting to his freedom of movement being restricted. Maltese terriers are essentially 'lapdogs'. They love human company so he could just be lonely. Don't smack him or use a bark collar, he's trying to tell you how he feels, listen to him and try to see what he sees. Would you smack a crying baby? If you try to understand where he's coming from, you may be able to resolve the problem. If you are completely sure there are no health problems (see a vet to check this) or issues with comfort, exercise etc, try ignoring him for a few nights, you won't sleep but he should eventually get the message that it is unacceptable for him to bark constantly. Good luck.

My cat is in heat...what can I do to stop her from bleeding/cuming...or being in heta for less time?

Get her spayed as soon as she off heat. It will stop any chance of her roaming and getting lost, producing kittens and developing uterine cancer. You'll be doing her a favour and you should get it done as early as possible to avoid any possible complications that can occur in older cats with anaesthesia.

I just got a dwarf rabbit which is 2 years old. Me and my boyfriend do not know if its a boy or a girl but we want to know what the best way is to nurture him/her. How to call it? How to get him to like us? How to be friendly with him and basically the best way to care for it. Please answer my question the best you can I really like him and I want to be the best owner I can :)

Lie the rabbit on it's back on your lap, (they will stay still in this position), if it has something like a semi colon (;)between it's legs it's a girl, if it looks like a colon (:) it's a boy. Rabbits don't usually respond to being called. You can get books on rabbit care, but don't give it too much lettuce it's not good for their digestion. Change their bedding every few days but not every day as they are coprofagious, that is, they need to eat some of their own faeces to absorb all the nutrients they need. Pick the rabbit up regularly as the more contact it has the friendlier it is likely to be. Give it a good rabbit food and supplement with treats like carrot. If it is boy, it may need to be neutered if it gets aggressive, but this should be a last resort as rabbits do not always respond well to anaesthesia. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I foget to add that you should keep a fresh supply of hay as this aids digestion, a salt lick and something to gnaw on as rabbits teeth do not stop growing. You can get all this from a pet shop. One other thing, rabbits are prone to overgrown back teeth so keep an eye on them, they need to be seen by a vet if they start causing problems, rabbits are also prone to abscesses, so if you find one or the rabbit feels overhot or goes off it's food, again to the vet.

13/f. Every day, I feel so lonely. It's like I'm an inanimate object. Nobody ever even seems to realize I'm alive. Nobody cares about me at all. I have no friends except my parents---that doesn't count. I try to make friends, but nobody ever gives me a second thought. In fact, I haven't had a single person at my house since I was 9. Nobody ever considers my feelings; if anyone has seen "Chicago," I feel exactly like the person singing "Cellophane." I cry like crazy every single evening at bedtime. It makes me want to do something outrageous just to see if someone would notice. Sometimes I wonder whether anyone would notice if I died. 5's to anyone who seems to emphathize...

You poor thing, I went through the same thing at school, it was hell at the time. You will come through, stay strong and talk to your parents. They would be devastated if anything happened to you and they do count, parents can be great allies in times of trouble. It sounds like you have very low self worth, so it may be good for you to volunteer for a charity etc. It will help others and give yourself a high at the same time.
When you start to rate yourself others will start to notice you too, and you could find you make friends with similar interests and experiences. I went out and volunteered for a couple of charities and it really helped, I started to feel good about myself and made friends there too. Give it try and please don't do anything drastic, life will get better as you get older. You sound like a really nice, sensitive person and the world needs people like you. Good luck honey.

I'm in 10th grade, and I have a crush on a shy guy. He tends to talk to me when no one is around and occasionally, he'll give me a little play punch. He'll also make fun of me; not in a mean way, jokingly. I'm not sure! Do you think he likes me? If he does, any suggestions?

He likes you, but it'll probably be a long time before he lets you know properly. If you feel confident and want to ask him on a date, go for it, but gently, and don't be put off if he turns you down at first. If he is really shy he may be too scared to say yes, so try suggesting you meet up and do something in a crowd to start with. Let him get used to that first. When he is, try asking him to go shopping as you need some advice on a present for a male relative, and then take it from there. He'll be flattered you rate his opinion and he should have more confidence by then. Good luck.

This might be long so sorry! Ok, I have a boyfrend lets call him Mark. Mark and me have been going out for about 7 or 8 months. Recently, all of my friends have been calling him gay and bisexual and they are telling me to break up with him because he is "Mr. Flirtacious". I love Mark sooo much and my friends just dont understand, and they kept bothering me about him so i told them that i broke up with him but i really didnt. Then i told one of my friends that i really didnt break up with him and she is REALLY mad at me!!! We arent really "friends" anymore and i dont know what to do. I know lying is wrong...but should i chose my friends or the guy? thanx for any help i rate high!!!

Have you tried asking your friends why they are behaving like this? Possibly they know something you don't, possibly they are jealous that he chose you and not one of them and that you are so happy together. If there are no grounds for their behaviour, they're not acting like true friends are they? Follow your heart, if you really want to be with Mark, go for it. They will either come round or you'll make new friends. Good luck.

my mom pretty much comes home every night drunk. Not really drunk, but she's wild and loud. Everytime I mention this to her when shes sober, she yells and me and tells me to shut up because she says it's not true. I hate every night because I always expect my mom to come home like this and it's really annoying. I understand she's an adult and can do whatever she wants but i can't stand her like this, being really rowdy. She also grounded me for a week because i stayed home from school tuesday. I want to go to the doctors because I think I have a sleeping disorder but my mom thinks im fine and I never have anything wrong with me. So I guess my questions are, what can I do about my mom, and how can I find out if I have a sleeping disorder or not without going to the doctors? thank you.
-Jamie
15/f

It sounds like your mom is very unhappy and is trying to mask it with trying to have a good time and drinking too much. You need to talk to someone who can help you, a school councillor, teacher, father or another adult relative, preferably someone your mom will listen to. Sometimes when people are drinking too much they have to hit rock bottom before they will acknowledge they have a problem and your mom shouting at you is her being defensive. She just doesn't want to admit she has a problem yet. Your sleep problems are more likely related to your concern about her. You need to relax to be able to sleep and how can you do that when you're constantly worried about your mom? If there is another relative you can stay with for a while and gently explain to your mom why you're having to move out for a while, this may help her to come to terms with what she is doing. There is also a branch of AA which helps relatives so give them a try? Best of luck honey, you sound strong enough to be able to get through this, just wait for your mom to catch up.

hey my names melissa fatato in 14 years old theres this kid chris that im like in love with but he has a girl friend and he likes me but he doesnt wanna break up with her so he wants to cheat on her with me but i cant do that because i would hate it if some one did that to me but i cant stop thinking about him what should i do?!?!

ThE_OnE_AnD_OnLy

Do you really want to be with a guy who thinks like that? He's still thinking with the trouser department and not his head, he needs to grow up and you need to be with someone who will respect you. I don't think you're in love with him, you're in love with love and he got in the way. Forget him and wait for someone to come along who is worthy of your time. He certainly isn't.

hey!can a girl with my problem answer this and a guy who actually knows what he's talking about?? i'm 14 and am a DD, i have a huge ass, and just so i can get the best advice- i happen to think i'm really pretty! (so not conceited) but i feel like guys only like me for that and i don't do anything with guys so i don't have a rep or anything but i'm completely embarresed about my boobs and i hate wearing....shirts in getneral. even through my sweatshirts you can see them!!! don't tell me to be happy with what i've got because its notpossible. i've tried every kind of bra, nothing makes me look smaller than a D or a C. what can i do?!?!?!?! THEIR HUUUUGEEEEE!!!!!! can a girl with my problem answer this and a guy who actually knows what he's talking about??

Firstly make sure you have a bra that fits you properly, if your boobs are lifted they will look better and you will feel better. Surgery is a drastic option and something that is best left till you are older and can ask for medical advice. If they are so heavy they give you backache, something can probably be done about them. In the meantime all you can do is get that bra, accept that you are amply endowed and wear them with pride. Good luck

Alright, I'm 13. I've been getting my period for about 6-7 months and it was pretty regular. Well, the time's passed for me. I was supposed to get it about a week ago, but I never had sex (and don't plan to for awhile) so I don't know what's going on.

Since I'm still kinda new to the whole period thing, I'm a little freaked out. Help me?

That is SO normal, it will be irregular for some time, stay with it and it will settle down eventually. And good for you about the sex thing as well.

i dyed my hair a few weeks ago nad use garnier nutrise((spelling)) any ways i have like dark blonde- light brown hair and i wantd a light blonde so i got but it really didnt turn out the color i wanted..so i was wondering if ne 1 knew a brand of hair dye that will dye even the darkest hair like /golden blonde

thx
Alyssa

I'm afraid you can't dye hair lighter unless you use peroxide first, it just won't show. I would suggest that if you want to go lighter, go to a hair salon first and discuss it to see firstly if it would suit you and secondly how to take care of your hair after doing this. Bleached hair, particularly if done badly, goes like straw and can break off, so make sure you know what you are doing before you start. Good luck.

Hey my name is Rachel and iam 17 there's this boy named chad and he's 17 years old to,but he's autistic and in special education I was wondering How do I get him to stop touching me on the shoulder I've tried telling him to stop and he just dosn't seem to understand what the word no means and he follows me everywhere one time he actually waited outside the girls bathroom door for me How do I get him to leave me alone and understand once and for all what the word no means?

People with autism quite often develop a fascination for another person. It could be your name he identifies with or maybe you have a similar appearence to someone he knows or has seen on tv. People with this problem don't usually mean any harm, and they can be quite gifted. I would say that if he is bothering you, there should be a teacher or teaching assistant who is responsible for looking after him that you could approach. They should be able to do something to intervene. It probably won't be long before someone or something else takes his attention away from you. So stay calm and don't do anything to keep him interested, speak to a teacher and things should get sorted. good luck.

I'm 14/f, here's the story. Ever since I've been on the basketball team with one of my best friends I've been feeling this weird pull towards her that I haven't really felt with any of my other friends (guys or girls) and at first I tried to shake it off but now everytime she talks to me I have to fight not to blush and if she's close to me I have to bite my lip not to say anything stupid. God I'm really messed up aren't I? I'm supposed to like guys not girls and certainly not my best friend! Can anyone tell me if this is normal? If not then how do I stop it? I rate high, please and thnx!

At your age, with hormones flying around it is possible to have a crush on someone of the same sex. It doesn't always last but even if it does, being a lesbian isn't the end of the world. Give it time, you may find the attraction fades and you can speak to her normally again. Good luck.

I am 14/f, and i think i have a serious depression thing. I am always feeling sad, and guilty about something. most of the time that i get a guilty feeling, i dont even know what i feel guilty about. Can someone tell me what i can do to be happier? Nothing in my background is making me depressed either. I tend to wear a lot of black, which is kinda what i feel: emptyness, guilt, sadness, darkness...See what i mean? im not like goth or anything, but i do hang out with a lot of goths. But anyways, i dont want to go to a psychiatrist or doctor, cause last time i did that, he told my mother that i was 'suicidal'. and i cant talk to my councilor at my school, she is a B*tch. please help me...

Sounds to me like you're a normal teenager. Hormones tend to go a bit haywire for a few years after they first kick in and can make you feel all sorts of things you've never experienced before. Can you talk to your friends? Chances are at least a few of them have been going through the same thing but haven't wanted to mention it to anyone. You could also try your parents, I expect they also went through this, I know I did and so did my children and we're all fine now. It takes a while for things to settle but if you can share your feelings it does help. Black is a protective colour, so when you wear it you're subconsciously hiding from the world. Look around you, I bet you'll see that there are a lot of black wearing teenagers. You will get through this, it just seems like there's no end to it at moment. Hang on in there, you'll be fine. Good luck.

is it true that you have to be really tall to be a model?

i asked this quesiton to some people and they said yes.. but some said you just have to be really tall if you wanna be a runway model..

what about normal models in magazines and stuff cause i'm 5'2" but i really wanna be a model and i don't know if i could be one since i'm so short=[

thanx! i'll rate high for nice, realistic answers =]

If you want to be a catwalk model there are height restrictions. If you want to be a catalogue or magazine model they're not usually so strict. I would say the best thing to do is contact a few agencies and see what they have to say about you. Just don't part with any money, the reputable ones will take photo's for nothing, will give you their honest opinion straight away and will find appropriate work for you. Remember though, that even if you don't make it as a model, it's just their opinion of you and there will be other options for you that may work out to be better. Try your best and if it doesn't work, try something else. Good luck.

Hey
I'd like to know the best straitener that you know of
also what is the best protective spray out there less than $100?

thanks!

GHD are the best I've ever tried and I have REALLY curly, frizzy hair. The GHD hair serum is also excellent and a product called Nexus. You just have to be careful not to take too long with each piece of hair you're straightening, as the GHD's do get very hot and you can burn your hair.
