well i have asthma and i need to know some ways to make me a better runner
i run varsity track and i am fast but i can never complete our workouts or even complete a 400 meter without having to stop. i currently use an inhaler before i run but and ive been told the more i push myself the better my asthma will get but that isnt what happens i just feel worse and get sick to my stomach and light headed
im going to the doctors soon but until then what are some things i can do to build up my stamina but wont get me out of breath because i know the more you run the better you get but i want to get better but i cant increase my workout and need something else to do where i can get the same effect
Additional info, added Sunday March 19 2006, 2:28 pm: if this matters we work our for about 45 min a day and its not really that hard we do a lap of warmup, stretch, then do a small set like 5 200s then we have 2 laps of warm down

Notso answered Sunday March 19 2006, 6:58 pm: I think a work out like yoga or pilates might be a good idea for you. A lot of the exercises focus on breathing, but still manage to tone your body. While it might not make you run better, it will help your breathing/cardiovascular and help you run better in the long run, and increase your flexibility and strength.
I'd check with your doctor to be sure what work outs would be best for you. Or if you have the money consult a personal trainer to get some exercises that won't leave you breathless. [ Notso's advice column | Ask Notso A Question ]

You don't say how often or how much you are training but it is possible you are overdoing it. You may also find that your inhaler is no longer the best one for you, the doctor should be able to check this. You should also mention your training schedule. I have bad asthma and I understand about the pushing yourself in exercise thing but sometimes we need to accept our limitations so that we don't wreck what health we have. Good luck.
