Vegetarian Problem

Question Posted Wednesday February 15 2006, 4:49 pm

My sunday school teacher says it's wrong being a vegeterian.
Well... to my friend she showed scriptures and stuff sayign that it's wrong to be a vegetarian. and i'm like what's the heck.
so anyway i found a scripture that says it's okey being a vegetarian and that's a sin to be racist against people who are vegeterians.
So anyway I plan to debate this whole thing out.

Can you please give me some supporting vegetarians scriptures or a website which can tell me where to find a debate on this topic?

"My sunday school teacher says it's wrong being a vegeterian...."

Your sunday school teacher is terribly incorrect. The impulse for vegetarianism is based on compassion and empathy--which are the very building blocks of ethics and morality: Far from being "wrong", vegetarianism is a striving for goodness and kindness and the Golden Rule.

Your sunday school teacher makes such statements based on ignorance and insecurity. He or she feels threatened because this is a form of moral discipline that they do not want to practice, so it's easier to dismiss it rather than to admit to your their own shortcomings. You'll find it's really that simple.

I HAVE SCRITPURES!!!

GODS ORIGINAL PLAN WAS FOR US TO EAT FROM TREES NOT ANIMAL FLESH.
Genesis 1:29-30
27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

MAN SINNED AND GOD SACRIFICED THE FIRST ANIMAL TO COVER OUR SINS, THE FIG LEAVES COULD NOT HIDE OUR NAKEDNESS.
Genesis 3 :
21Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.:

DANIEL WAS A FAMOUS VEGETARIAN IN THE BIBLE. READ HIS STORY, ABOUT HOW MUCH MORE HEALTHIER HE WAS THAN OTHERS WHO ATE MEAT!
Daniel 1:5-16

ANOTHER WONDERFUL STORY. THIS ONE IS ABOUT ISRAELITES WHO LUSTED AFTER THE FLESH THEY ATE IN EGYPT. GOD TOOK THEM OUT OF SLAVERY AND FEED THEM ANGEL FOOD AND THEY LUSTED AFTER FLESH OF ANIMALS? GO FIGURE! TAHT MADE GOD ANGRY.
Numbers 11:4-34

Hosea 2:
18And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely.

Hosea 6:
6For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

JESUS TOOK HIS DISCIPLES FROM KILLING ANIMALS FOR FOOD, e.g., Matthew 3, Mark 1, and Luke 5. This resembles Jesus' call to tax collectors, prostitutes, and others, who are engaged in activities that are not in line with his message of mercy and compassion.

HE DOESN'T EAT FLESH NOR DOES HE GIVE HIS ANGELS FLESH FOR FOOD, ISN'T HE OUR EXAMPLE?
Psalms 50:
13Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

GOD DOESN'T WANT US TO KILL ANIMALS, ITS VERY CLEAR IN THIS SCRIPTURE
Isaiah 1:11
To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats

HOW CAN THE LION LIE WITH THE LAMB IF THE LION WAS A FLESH EATER? IF IN THE KINGDOM ALL WILL BE VEGANS OR VEGETARIANS, AND YOU WANT THE KINGDOM NOW, SHOULDN'T WE START NOW? I THINK SO!
Isaiah 65:25
The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.

LAST AND CERTAINLY NOT LEAST...
Isaiah 66:3
He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine's blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations

GOD LOVE ANIMALS AND IT HURTS HIM TO SEE THEM BEING KILLED FOR FOOD. AN OX IS THE SAME AS KILLING A MAN TO HIM, THAT IS LOVE! IF JESUS CHRIST (YAHUSHUA-IN HEBREW) DIED FOR OUR SINS AND HE COVERS OUR SINS, WHY OUR WE STILL KILLING ANIMALS? WE DON'T NEED IT, IF THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS IN YOUR HEART, YOU WILL NATURALLY BE A VEGETARIAN.

YOU WILL FIND SCRIPTURES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT THAT SAYS ITS OK TO EAT MEAT, THOSE OUR PAUL'S SCRIPTURES. I DON'T BELIEVE HE WAS INSPIRED BY GOD, THAT IS A DIFFERENT TOPIC, I DON'T WANT TO ADDRESS IT HERE. THE ABOVE SCRIPTURES SHOULD BE ENOUGH. ONLY IN PAULS WRITTING WILL YOU FIND THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF EATING FLESH.

THE SCRIPTURES OF JESUS EATING FISH, I BELIEVE WERE ADDED! I WON'T GET INTO THAT ALSO NOW, I WROTE ENOUGH.

Your Sunday school teacher is wrong to try to force her opinions on others. There is nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, it's a lifestyle choice, that's all. We all make decisions based on what we know and feel, to eat meat or not is just one of them. As vegetarians are not a race there is no racism involved.
Your teacher should be encouraging you all to think for yourselves and to explore how you feel about the world, she should not be telling you what to think. There are various websites that will give you information, maybe you could suggest to her that she takes a look at them?

Your Sunday school teacher needs to be more careful in how she phrases things. The Scriptures do not call it sin to be vegetarian, but neither do they say that it's a sin to be racist against those who are. Mainly because vegetarians aren't a race. I believe the correct way to address the issue would be to ask why someone chooses to be a vegetarian. God created animals and He Himself commanded that certain of them be killed for sacrifices, etc. However, in the New Testament, He also said that what used to be "unclean" in the Old Testament, was now fine for human consumption. If someone chooses vegetarianism because meat grosses him/her out, fine. If they choose that lifestyle because they think God is against killing animals, they just need to be taught from the Scriptures. If they continue to choose that way of life, fine, no problem. This is a preference issue and as long as the problem of ignorance (in the non-derogatory use) is solved, then people are free to choose.

Let me now address your approach to your Sunday school teacher. "Debating" is not the correct approach. You are certainly within your right to question and ask for Biblical proof, but go into it with that mindset. "I'm asking honest questions, that's all." Don't be argumentative or attacking in your approach. If your teacher can't prove her statement, then maybe she will change her mind on the subject. If not, maybe, in a right way, she needs to be reminded that she needs to focus on what Scripture says, not what she thinks.

Hope this helps,

Dear Vege Problem,
I wasn't writing to give supporting scriptures for vegetarians or even a website for debate on this topic. However, I am writing about my own opinion on your dilemma. First of all, I want to say that just from your question, I believe you to be very smart to be questioning your sunday school teacher. Not that you should try to diminish her beliefs in any way, just that people have different beliefs and interpretations of everything, including the bible. (Mostly, the bible) For instance, I believe that you have been raised with a very open mind and are also considerate of others feelings and beliefs. Some people are not blessed with this character trait. But here is the dilemma. Being a vegetarian is a sin and it is NOT a sin. It IS a sin to those who believe it to be a sin. It is NOT a sin to those who believe it NOT to be a sin. Life is all about perspective and choices. We are all here on this earth with lots of options and those options may be right for some people and wrong for others. You were right to question the whole "Vegetarianism is wrong" track, however, I wouldn't debate the issue. I say this because every single person in the world is entitled to their own opinions, to live their life in the way that makes them feel good about themselves and their spirituality. Being a vegetarian helps many people feel closer to God just because they feel healthier, more spiritual, and they enjoy the lifestyle. And when you feel good about yourself, you are actually able to be kinder and have more patience with others that don't share your opinion. Debating issues about opinions can be done without bringing "sin" into it...these debates should be able to just allow others to see another side of life and get to know a person better. We each have our own lives to live, and I believe very strongly that each person has their own purpose in this life. Who's to say who's right? Good luck sweetie.

Vegitarian isn't a race, therefore one cannot be racist towards vegetarians. It's not a sin to be vegetarian, but God did allow us to eat animals after the whole sin entering the world thing.

First off, she's not being "racist" toward vegetarians. Vegetarians aren't a race. Secondly, I've heard the same thing about it being against God to be a vegetarian. I really don't know, I don't follow God stuff or anything like that.

Oh ok, you use your own language. That's wonderful. Speak it to yourself and speak English to everyone else please.

When you think about it,being a vegetarian would make more sense than not according to Christian beliefs.Eating meat involves killing, and I'm sure that you think it would be stupid for your god to want you to go around killing the things that he put here so that you can eat them.

As a vegetarian, you aren't harming any form of life-hence the reason why there should be nothing wrong with it if you go by the Christian belief system.Anyways, you can't even consider it a sin unless the bible explicitly states that it is one.

Your Sunday school teacher=fail.
