Q: I've never been the type of person to hug every individual. Most of the comfort I recieve is through eye contact or word usage, yet I know what's missing...I need to be comforted physically. How can I go about hugging the ones I care about without doubting myself?
Also, what makes for a good hug?
Yeah, some people are more huggy while others aren't or become. Read this for types of hugs and hugging tips lol: http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=785842

Q: 14/f
ok so i have to wear this really weird poodle skirt dress type thingy for something in school
and it bulges into the skirt part like right at my belly button....now i'm not fat, but im not like skinny either, i might be a little above normal when it comes to weight i guess...are they any tricks to making the dress look better on me?
like something i could wear under it or over it like a belt or something?
thanks!
Corset or girdle will help or if you or your mom can sew and make the dress a little less tighter around the waist so you can breathe.

Q: im 13/f

on friday we will have a spling bee and i rly wnat to do good in it..

[its a CLASSROOM] spleiing bee by the way

what kind of words will bee in the CLASSROOM spelling bee though? I want to know so i could study because my teacher didnt giveus the words for it

iwant to be the school spelling bee champ

and go to the district all the way to at least regionals.

any tips or share your experience with me please?

TRicks you did to get you through the next round?

-how the remeber to spell a word
-how to spell a word you dont even know or havent heard
-those language of origins how do they help

but my main QUESTION is: what are usuallly the words that are in an 8 grade class..?
Teachers aren't supposed to give you a list of words because that would be too easy and not representative of what spelling bees are in actuality. Books at the 8th grade reading level that have what people at that age would consider "big words" contain good vocab you will prob get tested on. So look for 8th grade reading lists. You probably had one and had to read books for school. You can also look up other school's lists online or other school's 8th grade vocab books. The next time you read books, jot down words you don't know and look them up. Reading is good for knowing new vocab and each time you see the word you will remember it better. 8th grade was a looong time ago for me. I would say to also memorize words that are not spelled how they would be pronounced phonetically. Watch movies: Akeelah and Spellbound for tips. Read all types of materials (newspaper, magazines, comics, etc) you can get your hands on and watch movies/TV shows with subtitles on (preferably educational like the Discovery Channel or the news). Learning Latin and other languages can help you too but that may be a little late at this point. Other languages just in addition help you guess how to spell a word if you have never heard of/seen it before because in certain language words are spelled in certain ways characteristic to that language. That's why origin of the word can help you. SAT I books are good too. Princeton Review contains little notecards you can study from or Sparknotes has products on vocab.

I won my 8th grade spelling bee. :) I kick myself all the time for what dumb mistakes I did wrong. I would definitely say to take your time (highly important) and envision the word in your head or write it out in the air or on your hand because you won't get pencil and paper to see if looks like it's spelled right to you because some people are visual and need the word in front of them to determine if it's spelled right or not and you may say something wrong by accident when you really do know how to spell the word. Enunciate clearly, every letter. To get "extra" time when you are a little stuck, ask for the definition and the origin of the word and an example sentence. lol you can buy some time that way. You have to ask for it. How it works is that the people ask you to spell a word. You can either spell it or ask for what I just mentioned. In the classroom, I don't think I remember getting that privilege, however. You can ask your teacher.

Remember that it's all about luck, what word you get. You may know some hard words and others you get tripped up on. Good luck to you!

Q: im doing this poster project and i have to advertise it to people.. um what type of people need the element, potassium.. and what for? like which jobs and companies. cause thats the point of the poster.. also ive been looking everywhere and what family is potassium in? maybe im just dumb and its obvious.. but yea we're just learning about it now and im in 8th grade, lol. please help fast smart people, cause my project is due tomorrow!
Everyone needs potassium to survive. Bananas contain potassium. What do you mean what family is potassium in? It's a chemical element, an alkali metal. Teachers and chemists may need this. If you burn it it produces a pretty color flame. Look on the bottom of this page for ideas: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium

Q: There's some rumours going around the internet that you can buy these contacts that makes your eyes look bigger or make them bigger.

Does anyone know if that's true? I've been trying to search the internet but couldn't find anything.

And to further show my question if you don't understand it, look at this girl's eyes:

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=7oTj7Vt1l2I
Read this entire forum thread and decide for yourself whether or not you really want to get them:

http://asianfanatics.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=467973&st=0

The thread is very informative, with the list of materials, pictures, and steps in the tutorial. Also, people can also achieve that look by plastic eye surgery or cosmetic surgery, however you wanna call it. Double eye-lid tape or glue can also add to the overall effect. I'm not entirely sure if any of the circle lenses and things I previously mentioned are a good idea health-wise, just saying. I mean, damn lol, she looks like an entirely new person, which is kind of scary to people who already know you. She also did that skin whitening effect too.

Moreover:

http://soompi.com/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t89232.html

I guess people call them "circle lenses" and originated in Korea. There's tons of links doing a Google search for them:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=korea+circle+lenses+pupils

Good luck in your search! :)

Q: For English class we are doing a research paper on someone who has made a difference in society. Someone like a president or something..any ideas people?
A good difference or a bad difference? Just kidding.

Here are people:

- Dalai Lama
- Mother Teresa
- Martin Luther King
- Abraham Lincoln
- Mahatma Ghandi
- Nelson Mandela
- Frederick Douglass
- Eleanor Roosevelt
- Pope John Paul II
- Confucious
- Jane Addams
- Susan B. Anthony
- Malcolm X
- Rosa Parks

I don't know if it's okay but I listed people that sound like they would be good for a research paper in a history class. I don't know what your assignment is about in detail but hopefully those ideas helped you or got you started brainstorming.

Q: My stepdad has been such an asshole lately. All he does is yell at me and tell me how lazy I am. I'm on the computer most of the time because I'm BORED and there's nothing to do at home. When he comes home, he goes "I see that you're on the computer again. What did you do around the house?" It's like he expects me to make sure that the house is in tiptop shape and everything has to be absolutely perfect for him. If I slightly disagree, he gives me a dirty look and tells me that he's going to take away my laptop if I keep arguing. It's like I have no say in the house. I know I'm only 15, but I hate it when he treats me like I'm dirt and worthless. He never praises me. If my brother has a wet diaper, he won't even change it. It's SO pathetic. I'm tired of him being a stubborn little whiny bitch about everything. When he comes home, all he does is rant and he won't SHUT UP. I'm so tired of this and sometimes I can't wait until I've moved out. I've become really snappy towards my mom. She's super picky, but I'd choose her over my stepdad any day. All of this anger is bottling up inside of me and when I burst out [at the wrong times], I'm either getting punished or sent to my room. I'm so independent and hate being controlled. Give me money and a house and I'd be able to completely manage my life on my own. It's hard to talk to my mom without being judged.

Also, I wanted to mention something else as well [pertaining to this]. I almost have 2 personalities. At home, sometimes I put off cleaning and I'm a huge procrastinator [sp], and I often find myself arguing with my parents. When I visit my dad and my uncles, I'm Ms. Goody Two Shoes and do everything that is asked. If my aunt asked me to clean the bathroom, I would do it in a split second. I guess I just want to 'maintain' that good girl image for my uncles and show them that I can accomplish what need be. My cousin is 22, and had straight A's all throughout high school. She would clean without being asked at my age; she was perfect. She is my 'role model' as of now. A few years back, she received a 4 year scholarship to a local college. I guess I just want my dad's side of the family to be proud of me..

Sorry that this was so long.
Also, another thing.. maybe you're spending so much energy there at your dad's house that at your mom's it's like your resting house where you just relax. I dunno, maybe. You already do so much at one house that taking care of another sounds like a big responsibility. :( That sucks that you have like double the chores. If somehow you can divide your energy into doing some work for both places you can get a break from your stepdad's yakking. Or like change it up a little and get some laptop time at your dad's for a change or something. Good luck whatever you do!

Q: So I just recently quit work at a Japanese restaurant where I met the new bus boy.

He’s very nice, really. But he’s decided that he’s madly in love with me.

It was nice having someone to talk to while I was working, but he’s one of those guys you can have as a friend at work, but don’t really hang out with anywhere else, you know?

So, he asked me to go to lunch with him and some other guys from work. I was like, that doesn’t sound too bad. So I gave him my number (maybe a mistake?) and he never got around to calling me. Okay.

So… he called me right before I left school for the holidays, twice, both times asking what I was doing the next day. “I’m leaving tonight,” I said both times.

He called me a little into winter break to ask for my permission to go to a party. This seems a little weird to me. He calls me again later that week, to ask about another party. “You don’t have to ask for my permission. You can do whatever you want.”

I stopped answering his calls after awhile, and then he stopped calling. Then about a week later, I get two texts from him saying “I love you”. Now I’m starting to get really sketched out.

I got a voicemail from him not but two days ago, along the lines of “Hey, baby, I was just calling to apologize for not having talked to you in awhile. I dropped my phone in the toilet and had to get a new battery. I wanted to wish you a happy new year and everything. I love you, bye.”

I really, really did not feel like calling him back, so I settled for texting him:

'So, I’m off the schedule now at the restaurant, but I guess I’ll see you as a customer. You know I just like you as a friend, right? Happy new year.'

He called me just now. Just 10 minutes ago to ask me to accompany him to his parents’ house. In two years. Because apparently he called them and told them all about me and they think I sound like a nice girl and would like to meet me.

I have known this guy only since November.

“I don’t know what I’ll be doing in two years,” I protest. I'm thinking of studying abroad, but I don't bother to tell him this.

THEN. He asks me to marry him. In two years.

I am absolutely speechless. SPEECHLESS. “I—” I stammer, “two years is—that’s quite a—you know I just like you as a friend right?”

“But we can still keep in touch,” he insists, “and get to know each other more better.”

More better. I’m not even kidding you. …He got expelled from high school by throwing a chair at his principal.

I can’t help but feel like I am partly responsible for the situation I have put myself in. It’s just, you know, most people that I know are, well, normal.

And in college. Or have graduated from college. Or have aspirations to go to college.

Note to self: guard cell phone number with my very life!

I'm incredibly concerned, and could use a little advice. :(
None of the other columnists mentioned that he sounds like a stalker. Ask if you can get a restraining order for this kind of thing.. I don't know if it can be construed as sexual harrassment or not or just harrassment.

Q: 13/f

lately, my sthomach has been really toned.i havent been working out or anything. is that normal for around my age?
I heard laughing a lot helps work out your stomach. If you "laugh 'til it hurts" it's your stomach that hurts, right? :O

Maybe you haven't realized that you use your stomach in some way.. gym class?

Q: what videos should i put onto my ipod from youtube so im not bored on this 8 hr flight? 13/f.
- Derrickcomedy has hilarious videos:
http://youtube.com/profile?user=derrickcomedy

- Also, the band OK Go makes awesome music videos. The lead singer's sister does their choreography. They are good for several watches:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=pv5zWaTEVkI
http://youtube.com/watch?v=RbdbVhBGETQ
http://youtube.com/watch?v=9Z57W0g1TRo

- Also check out Liam Kyle Sullivan's videos:
http://youtube.com/profile?user=liamkylesullivan

Other suggestions:

- Any standup comic routines are great too. Margaret Cho, Lewis Black, Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Handler, etc.

- Look into video podcasts.

- Also you can probably find your favorite TV shows (full episodes or even segments) on youtube like Family Guy. Or movies even.

- For audio, there are audiobooks out there you can download and listen to someone reading the book if you are interested.

Q: just wondering but for anyone who watches degrassi or no's the characters, is Adamo Ruggiero gay in real life? his character on the show is Marco. I was just wondering. Thank you!
There's not much info on the net about him but here are two "sources":

http://community.livejournal.com/adamofans/11603.html
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1258362/board/nest/8531293

Some people say yes, some people say no. He may be metro for all we know. Either he has experience with this stuff or is a really good actor. We may never know. Sean Hayes in Will and Grace doesn't give away his orientation in real life ever.

Q: What is the Freebie Word found on page 31 in Seventeen's December 2007/January 2008 2007 issue?

25 - simple
26 - tunes
27 - dial
28 - games
29 - picture
30 - ball

Q: 16/f Junior in HS

i have trust issues, lets start with that. the last guy i was involved with made a bunch of lies and rumors making me look like a whore. my boyfriend of 6 months, a few years ago told me he still loved me when we broke up but he apparently didn't love me that much because he had a new girlfriend by the end of the day. i told my best friend my deepest secret and she spread it around school. my social life has changed dramatically this past year and now it has affected my love life.

my last serious relationship was 2years ago. it was amazing while it lasted and we truly were in love with each other. i had a fling over the summer but it went horribly wrong. everytime i tell a guy i like them they get a girlfriend the next day. i had a chance at getting into a relationship a few months ago but the more i talked to him the more things i found that i didn't like about him. i set high standards. well i think they're high.
i need a guy who:
-gives me space but is there when i need them
-is active in at least one sport (no computer/video game nerds{but im not saying video games are off limits})
-has to be respectful
-older than me or only younger by a month
-doesnt have hair past their shoulders
-doesnt smoke anything(i dont care about drinking as long as its not excessive)
-likes watching movies
-likes to cuddle
-wont try to make out with me in front of his friends just to show off
-wants to go to college

i don't go for just anyone. i don't like having my heart broken and i rarely put it out there. now, theres a guy who meets my standards but i'm not sure if he likes me back. we flirt a lot but i dont know if he thinks its just being nice. i need a book for understanding guys. seriously if theres a book let me know. so back to my flirty guy. he's a friend of a guy friend that i have and i've hung out with him once out of school and that was halloween. okay so on to my question(s)

1-do i have high standards?
2-is there a book for understanding teenage guys(i like to read)
3-should i go for it with this guy?
4-how do i go for it? i have one class with him
5- how do you ask for a guys AIM screen name without sounding like a crazy stalker?
6-how do you turn friendly flirting to "im interested in you" flirting?

wow 6 questions. i give you credit if you even attempt to answer all of this.

: )
I don't think you have high standards. It's not wrong to not want to just settle for anybody who comes your way. Everyone has criteria for who they want to be with, unconsciously or consciously. From what you listed it sounds like you want a sensitive, understanding, loving, well-groomed slightly older guy, who has ambition and cares about his future. Nothing no one else probably wouldn't want in a man. Also, you've been hurt in the past so it is important for you to go through the healing process and look for someone who is actually good for and good to you.

Haha, guys want to understand the female psyche as much as we want to understand theirs. If you have other male friends you can ask them. Books, I'm not entirely sure myself. There's so man out there. I haven't read any to recommend to you, but you can definitely ask a salesperson at your nearest bookstore for suggestions. Or better yet, visit your local library. If your library has a system where you can search for books by category and there's relationships, look into that. So people say that guys are just really straightfoward. You just have to read them the right way.

If you get to know friends as well, you can get hints from them whether he likes you or now. In any case, take it slow. Become friends with the guy first and be nice to his friends so you know what he's like and who he hangs out with.. then seriously go for it and begin the crazy flirting ;). You don't want to just dive in and get stung again. Once you've had a few conversations with him you can ask for his AIM screenname. Who knows, he probably will ask you for yours or maybe your phone number.

Q: I've heard stories from several sources about "the evil mother-in law". I happen to have one, also...

Anyone have advice about how to deal with them?

And why does she succeed in making me so angry?

It's like she cares nothing about boundaries, etc.

Grrr...
I wish you guys could watch the movie "Monster-in-Law" together.. It's about the relationship between a woman and her son's fiancee. It's pretty realistic and may help you get ideas.

Q: would you consider "to hell with it" to be vulgar? as in cursing?
It depends who you say it around. Saying "whatever" is the same meaning and less vulgar so maybe you want to say that. Or "screw it".

Q: I am fond of eating banana but my bros dont want to see me eating banana. its impossible for me to eat banana in front of them and in public. Why the banana is related to bad thoughts?
Phallic symbol.

Q: 16/f
Thanks to anyone who answers or even reads this. I'll rate you

I think I'm a pretty good person, but I still want to be better/smarter. When it comes to everyday life, dating and guys, sex, friendship, pretty much anything. Can you give me some tips
or words of wisdom or anything basic or important to keep in mind when it comes to the above listed topics. Please try ... share your experiences or knowledge. It can be anything. Thank you!
Don't worry, with experience you will slowly build up. Take it slow. You can ask your older friends for tips too and there are many books on these subjects (teen fiction/chick lit). For friendship you can ask your parents. Or just post your question to this site if problems arise. We are always here for you!

Q: I cuss a lot, and I want to stop. How can I stop cussing so much?
You can slowly stop this habit by substituting other words like "darn it" for "damn it" or "fudge" for you-know-what and "hey" for "hell", etc. Slowly they will sound ridiculous and you will stop saying them altogether. Or cuss in your head or in a different language so no one will know what you are saying, hopefully.

Q: i live in the south, and we always say ma'am and sir when speaking to adults. however, i recently met some students from northern states and they don't say that. they even said that adults from northern states think it's weird when they say ma'am and sir. but in the south, adults think it's disrespectful to not say ma'am and sir. why is this, and should i just say ma'am and sir to all adults because that's how i was brought up?
There's nothing wrong with that. We all use different words and ways to expres ourselves. Maybe it's because you say "ma'am and sir" instead of like "miss and sir". (Miss is safe because you might not be sure if the woman is married or not or some other complicated situation) It's not old-fashioned or anything. Some people jdon't use those terms while others do. No worries!
