ma'am and sir i live in the south, and we always say ma'am and sir when speaking to adults. however, i recently met some students from northern states and they don't say that. they even said that adults from northern states think it's weird when they say ma'am and sir. but in the south, adults think it's disrespectful to not say ma'am and sir. why is this, and should i just say ma'am and sir to all adults because that's how i was brought up?

There's nothing wrong with that. We all use different words and ways to expres ourselves. Maybe it's because you say "ma'am and sir" instead of like "miss and sir". (Miss is safe because you might not be sure if the woman is married or not or some other complicated situation) It's not old-fashioned or anything. Some people jdon't use those terms while others do. No worries! ]
well im from Minnesota..and we never say Ma'am and sir. we just talk to them normally. yes i would still say that to any adult just so you dont break that habit. it shows you have some respect for adults and thats good. hope this helps a little bit!

well im from new york, and i dont say ma'am and sir when addressing adults, but i still address them with respectful names, certainly not anything i would say around my friends or something like that. people are raised differently. not all northerners think its weird to say ma'am and sir, some do it too. dont ever change yourself for other people. if you feel its important to refer to adults as ma'am and sir while speaking to them, then go ahead and do wht you please :] ]
Yeah stay that way man. Who cares? I'm not saying that in a bad way either. I'm from (big bad mean) New York. It's one huge melting pot over here, you have people from all over the states and all over the world. Don't let anything anyone says change that about you. I wasn't brought up that way, and still say sir and ma'am occasionally to adults too. So stick to it, because being disrespectful is sometimes a bit worse than being weird. Hope that helped. ]
I live in a redneck part of Georiga, and yeah, I was raised saying Ma'am & Sir too. I used to live up north, and people weren't as polite up there. Maybe southern people are just more polite. And it probably goes way back in history. Just continue being polite =]

Hey there, I live in Georgia, I totally know what you mean. My parents are both from the west side of the states, so in California they don't exactly like Ma`m and Sir.
But in school, I get in trouble if I don't reply with a yes ma`m. I've just adapted to not saying it at home. Don't worrry, you don't have to change to please them, if you're not comfortable with it. ]
I live in Florida and well I definitely don't say that!
If thats how you were brought up, then yes say ma'am and sir to them, because then there going to think your disrespectful.
Also, what state are you from?
Hope I helped!

yah they'll just think you're respectfull. ]
yea i lived in florida for 4 years and always said maam and sir. I moved to maine and work as a cashier and when i say it they dont really like it. Some people say they rather be called by their frist name because maam or sir makes them feel older. lol. But you shouldnt change how you were brought up for anyone.

I live in the south too. [Texas] It's just because people are more friendly and down-to-earth in the south. Like how when you're driving down the road, you wave at people you don't even know. But my aunt [she's a yankee, up in the north- Iowa] she thought it was weird. And to answer your question, yes, if you were brought up that way [I was too] keep doing it. It's nice & respectful. ]
For southern people, say ma'am and sir. For northern people you can call them by their first name if you want. Or a more respectful way is to call them Mr.(last name) and Mrs.(last name).
