"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love" - Albus Dumbledore

Hi, I'm Laura. I'm a senior in college & I'm slowly deciding what I want to do with my life. I love Harry Potter, coffee, writing, and sleeping (amongst other things). I'll never claim to know everything, but I'm confident in my ability to help people with their problems. Feel free to send me an inbox question; I'll get back to you!

A few thoughts I've gathered from my teenage years (and being on this site for most of them!):
1. If you Google song lyrics, the song will come up 99% of the time.
2. Dress to fit your body type, and buy the size that fits. If you're a size 6, squeezing into a 4 won't make you look skinnier. It makes you look fat when you aren't.
3. You will never regret waiting to lose your virginity.
4. There is such a thing as a stupid question, but we're all allowed to ask them.

BU 2014 :)

wicked awesome conversations

^my forum, liven it up a little?

advice

Okay, so I just got some bedding, (http://www.littlemissmatched.com/Catalog/bed-in-a-bag/marvelous-dots-bed-set), and I have $400 left for paint and decorating. I have two rooms that are in a suite, and they're kinda shaped like this:( + is a door, and x is a window, and x+ pattern is a window and radiator - and you can't put anything in front of the x+)

______x+x+x____
| | |
| | |
|+++| |
_______x+x+x+________| |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| + |
x + |
x | +
| | +
-----------------+++------------------

The room on the left is about 12x18, the one on the right is about 12x18, just they're kinda turned.

Now, I have: (sizes are just to show you about how big things are)
-1 twin bed
-1 Bookshelf that is 1.5 feet up, 2.5 feet wide, and 1 foot deep
-1 Chest of Drawers that is 2 feet up, 3.2 feet wide, and 1.8 feet deep
-1 (Another) Chest of Drawers that is 4 feet up, 2 feet wide, and 1.8 feet deep
-1 craft holder that is 2.5 feet up, 1 foot wide and 1 foot deep
-Desk w/ chair that is (desk) 2 feet up, 3 feet wide, and 1.6 feet deep
-A set of 16 mesh squares that are held together by little things so that it can be arranged in any formation with those 16 squares (2x2, 2 1x2's, etc.)

Also, I have hardwood floor

So, overall, I have a couple of questions. You can answer any or all.

1. Any suggestions for furniture formations?
2. Paint suggestions? (Pattern, brand, etc.)
3. What should I get with my remaining $410? I will most likely have $300 or so after paint, what should I get?
4. The bedding has lots of colors. Which ones should I use, I'd like to pick two of them, for my walls?
5. The only furniture that I can paint is my bookshelf. Any ideas for painting that using the two colors of paint that I use for the walls?
6. Any overall suggestions?

I know it's a lot, and, again, answer any or all that you want to do.

Oh, and number your answers please. Thanks!

1. Layout is key to a room. I'd like to think that I know a thing or two about bedrooms, because I've studied architecture for a year :] If you could email me a sketch of the rooms, that'd be really helpful. Make a picture in paint, or something, even, and I'll help you from there.
[lauraxomichelle@gmail.com)

2. Buy decent paint. Otherwise it'll chip and look nasty. Also, you'll need more coats to get a good color. Benjamin Moore is always good. Go to a store like Lowe's or Home Depot and buy paint there. Ask for help; associates will be glad to help you out. Tell then you want quality paint that will last. Semigloss (also known as eggshell) is usually ideal for walls, because a matte finish will become shiny if you ever have to clean something off the wall (from scrubbing)

As for colors, well, it depends on your personal taste. Me personally, I would want purple walls regardless of what my bedding looked like but I can't have them because I'm leaving next year for college =(. Bring paint samples home and see how they coordinate with your bedding and in different lighting than the store. An orangey-red would be cute if you want to have colors from the sheets, or you could tone things down on the walls and use grey (and put bright things that really pop on your walls)

3. Here are some suggestions. I also recommend not spending all $300 right away, and maybe thinking it over for awhile once you have the walls painted and such.

- Lamps: floor lamps, wall sconces, tabletop. Whatever you choose, don't underestimate the power of task lighting. It gives your room a wicked nice glow, and is much more flattering than a bright overhead light. Home Depot and Lowe's both have really cheap, nice lamps. Stores like Walmart and Target do too, especially Target (with all their designer collections). And back-to-college sales have fun stuff as well.

- Rugs. This may or may not be your thing, but a crazy-colored rug would be a nice accent. Make sure you get that grippy stuff that keeps it from sliding around, unless your idea of fun is slipping on the rug and sailing into a wall. I don't know what it's called but you'll find it in a store.

- Trash can. I had this wicked ugly plastic bin and it really detracted from my room. So I got a round, blue, mesh one instead for $2.50 at Target. You could also spray paint one you already have.

- Posters and pictures. If you have a favorite photo, have it enlarged at Kinko's and frame it. Make collages. Things like that. Bulletin boards are cute too.

- Mirrors, These are especially helpful in small rooms. A full-length mirror is useful in two ways- it helps you get ready AND it makes a room seem larger.

You may not want the furniture to be the same color. I'm picturing a blue bookcase against a blue wall blending in like an iguana... If you had two colors (like one on the top of the wall) that would be all right.

Hmm... Overall suggestions? This is an excellent opportunity to clean out your room! Go through everything. Throw out useless junk, donate useful things, and any clothes that you've outgrown, give to family or donate.

MAKE SURE you cover your floor with plastic before you paint. And tape it down so it doesn't slide. Use painter's tape to cover mouldings and baseboards. Prepping the walls is also important.

Good luck!

I'm on the yaz birth control. I've been on yaz for about 5 months now but was on something different for about 5 months before that. I take my pill everyday on time. I'm sexually active with my boyfriend though. We have sex about 3 times a week. Always with a condom except 2 times this past month. He pulled out before anything happened so i should be safe. But i'm on yaz and i was suppose to get my period yesterday ( the first day of my inactive pill) it's now the second day out of the four inactive pills, and i still don't have my period. I took a pregnancy test this morning and it came out negative, but i dont know how accurate it was because i drank so much water... Help!

I'm on Yaz too (have been for a year) and I don't get my period until the first day of a new pill pack. Once it's been more than a week into a new pack (and there's still no period) take a pregnancy test. Until then try not to stress, because that can delay your period a bit.

Also, if you truly never miss a Pill, Yaz will work like it should and you have nothing to worry about.

i was on the depo shot for the first months shot. I didnt go back for the second shot ive been trying to get pregnant, we try almost everyday. Or atleast 3 times a week. I havent had my period since before the shot. I was spotting for a day or two does that count as my period. Will i get pregnant i tried a million times.?

You will get pregnant. However, it can take up to a year for Depo Provera to completely get out of your system. It doesn't hurt your fertility, rather, it just takes longer to be able to get pregnant, as opposed to being on the Pill.

From http://www.plannedparenthood.org/:
"Irregular bleeding is the most common side effect, especially in the first 6 to 12 months of use.

For most women, periods become fewer and lighter. After one year, half of the women who use the birth control shot will stop having periods completely.
Some women have longer, heavier periods.
Some women have increased spotting and light bleeding between periods.

Because the birth control shot is long lasting, it can take a long time to get pregnant after getting your last shot — anywhere from nine months to more than a year. So, Depo-Provera is not a good birth control method for you if you’re thinking of getting pregnant soon."

The spotting may have been your period. Take a pregnancy test if you aren't sure. It's your best option at this point.

I wanna cook a nice desert for my boyfriend. with strawberry. Can someone give me a good recipe? thanks

I'm not going to duplicate the excellent answers below me, but may I suggest strawberry shortcakes?
Make the biscuits yourself (I usually use Bisquick's recipe, though it's incredibly sticky, the end result is worth it). Fresh whipped cream and sliced strawberries make it taste fresh instead of storebought.

ok so i currently have a job. but in two weeks im moving 4 hours away from home for college, and am only keeping the job i have now for the 1-2 weekends per month that i come home. im moving to a large university in a very small town. all there is is a walmart, a few restaurants, a couple bars, and some fast food. i really want a restaurant job because that's what i've done for the past 2 & a half years is be a server. other than fast food though all they really have is a Longhorn, Applebee's, and Sonny's BBQ. i REALLY want the job at Sonny's because i served at a bbq restaurant for 2 years so i feel like i could work well there and would be familiar with everything. the problem is, with it being a small town with not much employment and a ton of college kids, i've heard it's very very hard to get a job around there. i'm planning on going and applying at places on move in day to try to get ahead of everyone else, and i plan on talking to the manager at sonny's first thing, but how can i make myself really stand out and hopefully manage to get hired? not working in college is not an option because i have bills to pay & things like that, so im pretty much relying on this job. i'm going to try to mention that i've worked at a bbq place for 2 years and up talk myself before the manager can even mention if they're hiring or not, so as to maybe get them interested in me, but what else can i do? any tips?

Have a résumé with you when you go to talk to the manager, and give it to him in person :] When I went for a job interview recently, I brought a copy of my résumé with me. The woman interviewing me was pleasantly surprised, and said that I was the first person to bring one in.

If they have your résumé they have a way of contacting you besides just calling and leaving your number. It shows that you made an effort and care about having a job.

Good luck!

ok, so yesterday I went to davids bridal and found 2 dresses I really like. I tried on the first dress, and it was pretty when I looked in the mirror, but inside I felt like it was just another wedding dress, and I didnt feel like myself....but the 5 girls that were with me all really loved it and thought it was beautiful.

THEN, I tried on a beautiful princess looking dress, with lots of tulle in the skirt, and the top was a beautifully beaded Halter. Not only did I think I looked pretty, but i FELT beautiful in it, I couldnt stop smiling!!

Then I asked the others what they thought...

every single person preferred the 1st dress over this one.

Yesterday when I tried on those two dresses, the pretty poofy princess dress made me feel the prettiest, and I basically had my mind made up that thats the one I wanted for sure.

Then I texted a picture of it to jay and melissa. my fiance's mom and dad.

Jay, He said he liked it and asked me to email it to him. So i emailed him 2 pictures.....

One of my favorite, the poofy princess one...

A pic of my 2nd choice, the other dress I tried on...just added it to the email to show them.

I thought everything was great....

Until I got an email from melissa.

She said, "I like the 2nd dress better..."

It really upset me because i felt like everyone preferred the 2nd dress over my favorite....

The other dress was pretty when I looked in the mirror, but I felt so uncomfortable, and felt like just another bride. I considered it a dress that people would forget what it looked like as soon as the wedding was over....

The poofy dress made me feel like a princess, and I know people would remember that dress for days....

So I'm stuck. should I go with a dress that everyone likes to see me in and thinks I'm pretty, but not really feel like myself?

or go with the dress I feel the best in and have people think I'm not as pretty?

Why did she even have to stress her opinion about the dress she preferred when I clearly stated in the email which one I wanted????

I'm just getting aggravated because she keeps trying to change my mind about almost everything!!!

If she makes me change
My mind and i have to get my 2nd choice dress I'll feel like I'm settling....

:-(

Wear the dress that you want, not anyone else.

Anyway, she probably gave her opinion because it's a natural assumption that you were looking for opinions when you sent BOTH pictures.

yesterday for some reason i accidentally blocked my friend from posting wall posts on my facebook (i just made my facebook). so when i added her, she tried to post something to me and couldn't obviously. via a picture comment, she said to me, "why can't i post wall posts?"

i figured out how to allow the wall posting feature, and responded to her on her wall: "ok, you can put wall posts on now."

basically, what i am asking is: if you read my message as an outsider "ok, you can put wall posts on now" would you think that was weird for me to say that?

yes, i know this is an idiotic question but just answer it honestly!

Uh, no.
I'd think that your friend could now post on your wall.

Don't worry about it.

I am over weight! I am 5'8 and weight 30 pounds more then I should! I start high school in 1 week and 2 day! I know there isn't anyway to loose 50 + pounds by then but is there anytips or advice someone can give me to help me diet in high school!

I have tried weight watchers and the stuff in magazines. But I just can't seam to keep up with anything! Also I hate excersise I need something fun that will work and not get boring. Because I hate those walking movies. Some stuff I have it home is a treadmill, ab loung, and a bo flex. But I would rather not use the bo flex it is alot of trouble to deal with.

SO can someone suggest ideas to help me eat right, and home and at school. And/ also how to exercise and keep up with it and not get bored or lazy!

How do you walk a full 20 on the treadmill with out just quiting?

I am so stressed please help.

Hello. I think I'm a good person to help you out here, because I lost 30 pounds before I started high school =) I'm still a bit overweight, but healthy eating has literally saved me.

The most important thing is to know WHAT you're eating. It's my opinion that keeping track of your food every single day is obsessive, and leads to future problems with food. However, I recommend doing it for about a week. Write down how much of something you're eating (measure your cereal and milk, etc). The biggest thing for me was realizing what a serving of, well, ANYTHING, was. Once you realize that you're eating four servings of ice cream at once, you'll learn to cut down to a scoop or two, and pair it with some fruit. Little things like that, it made a huge difference for me.

Also, eating healthier doesn't have to be a chore or a pain in the butt. As I mentioned before, eat something that isn't so healthy with something better for you, or replace it entirely. Like if you want cheese curls after school, have some cheese and crackers instead. Real food = better food. If your school lunches suck (Mine aren't so bad, because we have a deli line and salads) pack your own snacks and sandwiches. If things get soggy before you can eat them, bag the elements of a sandwich separately and assemble at lunchtime.

Throw an apple or two in your bag before you leave for school. Bag up some baby carrots, or buy cheese sticks, yogurts, etc. Anything healthy that's portable will prevent mindless snacking.

Drink lots of water, juice, and milk before you reach for things like soda. Water, especially, is important because it regulates your body, prevents dehydration, and makes you feel better in general. Lots of people eat when they're thirsty, because they think they're hungry.

The best way to complete a workout is to not be bored with it. When I went on vacation, I was doing hour long elliptical programs without even knowing it because the hotel I was at had televisions on all the equipment. So try to put the treadmill where you can see a TV, or download some shows to your Pod, or just listen to music. And envision your "healthy" self when you're feeling discouraged.

If you have On Demand, look for a Health/Fitness section. I order free workouts on there and they're really fun.

Good luck, and feel free to inbox me if you need anything else =]

I work as a cashier in a big grocery store and I am seeing a lot of products saying things like, "No high fructose corn syrup!" and stuff. I don't think I saw it a couple of years ago and it's making me curious what the stuff is and if it's bad to ingest. It's like the companies are advertising it because it's a super good thing that their product doesn't have HFCS.

The packages are from big name companies too like Pillsbury (cookies), Snapple (natural teas), Miracle Whip, and even Pepsi had these new throwback drinks that didn't have it in the mountain dew or original Pepsi.

So, what's this high fructose corn syrup stuff and why are they getting rid of it in products?

It's a sweetener derived from corn.
(links to more reliable sites are there too if you don't like Wikipedia)

From what I can gather, it's nutritionally the same as sugar. A lot of people use the argument, "Ewww, they feed it to animals! How could you put that in your body?" Well, we feed plenty of foods to animals. Like lettuce, corn, and apples.

It's been advertised a lot lately because of a demand for natural, organic, un-processed food. And honestly, I think it's a good thing. It's not necessarily the HFCS that's bad- it's the fact that you just drank a thirty-two ounce soda sweetened with it, and soda is bad for you. Personally I try to eat things that have sugar as opposed to HFCS, if only because I think it tastes better. Soda made with sugar is SO delicious! Go to Canada and drink their soda, seriously =)

So basically, it's disappearing from products because the people buying them don't want HFCS.

Oh, and the Throwback thing was actually a tribute of sorts to the 1960s, complete with retro packaging and the 60s formula, which contained sugar instead of HFCS.

Hope I helped you =)

has anybody tried jergens natural glow (daily moisturizer? does it work? does it actually make you tan? im white as heck so i really want to know.

It really does work.
The original formula (Natural Glow) builds color gradually. And you won't see a difference at first, besides moisturized skin.

Natural Glow Express works too. One of my friends used it before prom, and she looked naturally tanned. With that one, you get results right away but it costs more per ounce.

Which one do you like better?
Where can I get some that look simular for cheaper?
What year do they look like?

Thanks!

I love the first one. It's very classy, but still wicked pretty. I can't really say what year? But it's a classic pin-up inspired style.

THe second one is pretty, too, but the style is more revealing (because of the v-neck) and would probably require more readusting to avoid problems.

You could get similar styles at Delias.com:

I just dyed my hair (not my first time) and it got on my feet and will not come off. I use the hair dye boxes that you can buy just about anywhere. I scrubbed and scrubbed and I don't know what else to do. How can I get it off asap?

Try using shampoo. Then, nail polish remover. (Be sure to moisturize afterwards to avoid drying your skin out)

If not, it'll come off in a few days on its own. It doesn't permanently dye the skin, just hair. =)

hey there,
okay so ive been wearing contact lenses for about 6,7months. they are the soft monthly disposables they are great and i have no problems with them i recently went for a check up to see if they were working my optiitian said everything was great and the type of lenses were working for me.
but today I went to put in my right lense fine no problem, but the left one really stung, this might happen the odd time but it settles but my eye went really watery and blood shot so I had to take it out. I let my eyes relax for an hour then tried again the same thing,my mom said I should leave them out for a day or two then see.
but im kinda worried..is this serious..?has anyone who has contact lense ever expierinced this and know what it might be?.. i checked online and some solutions said it could be a smile scratch on my eye(cornial abrasion)? but my eye isnt that sore without the lense in just gets iritated when i put it in?.
Im worried to go see my optitian because honestly I dont know what il do if i cant wear my lenses again :(
im probably over reacting but if anyone knows anything about this please help i need some reassurance!

Wear your glasses for a day.
Then try putting in a new contact.
The lens might be scratched. The same thing happened to me.

It's highly unlikely that you'll be unable to wear contacts again. My boyfriend has permanent eye damage from his contacts (he spraypaints and the paint got stuck on his contacts, he put them in backwards, and they scratched the hell out of his eye) and he can still wear them.

You'll be fine. Don't fret =)

i have this rash type with a couple zits on it between my breast, i think it's from the heat and the sweat gets caught in there. i've tried to wear bigger bras and sports bras too but it doesn't help. is there any home remedies i can rub on it. i've heard tooth paste on pimples/zits but i still have the rash going on.

Wash the area with acne wash daily. Or every other day if you notice peeling/dryness. Also, apply a spot treatment.

It's really common for sweat and oil to build up there, causing pimples. Don't pop these zits, though. It'll be incredibly painful. Let them pop on their own.

why do some stores when they sell clothes, they use a permanent marker to cross out the brandname? usually these stores are not the original sellers of the brand, is that why?

Actually, stores like Marshalls, TJMaxx, etc, they get clothes from other retailers for many reasons: damages, defects, last season, overstock. Typically a line is drawn so that you know it's not brand new, and the company sometimes does it right after it's made. I saw Abercrombie jeans with a stamp on the label there once. It said defective or damaged, i don't remember.

It's not a big deal. The clothes are still okay to wear and everything.

how do you put a finger through a flame and not get burned?

If you go really fast, like just waving your finger back and forth, it doesn't hurt at all.

Also, some people have thick calluses on the end of their fingers, like a "sewing finger" or whatever. So their skin is really insensitive to heat/cold/needles/etc. Then there's people like my mom, who through various accidents might not have any nerves in their hands at all.

Be careful doing this. You could really burn yourself.

About 1 week ago my boyfriend and I had unprotected sex and after i took an emergency contraceptive....And since yesterday i have had something like my period but darker and thicker why is that?

The morning after pill (aka EC) can screw up your cycle. And it usually does. More than likely, it made your period come sooner. Periods can be different some months (color, etc), especially if you recently subjected your body to a couple weeks worth of hormones, so don't worry about anything for now. If it continues, and you're still convinced that something's up, callyour doctor. But in the meantime I wouldn't be concerned about anything.

hey i wanna start shaving my hair if you know what i mean! not legs or under arms the other one (random and gross i know) BUT THE ONLY REASON IS BECAUSE OF BIKINIS! i am skinny so i like to wear bikinisALOT also when i am swimmming and i am not careful and i spred MY LEGS OPEN OR SOMETHING my sister always makes fun of me when the "hair" is visible ... so how do i shave it ALL off. i dont wanna cut myself .. and i heard you need the hair for when you have your period (is that true??) ??? i know it is grooss but do i use a razor cause i dont wanna wax (oouch) well thnxs and if you answer this i REALLY APPRECIATE IT CAUSE I KNOW IT IS DISGUSTING ,... thnxs & THIS IS FOR SWIM SUIT SEASON GIRLS

It's actually more hygienic to trim or remove hair down there, provided that you keep the area clean (having less hair makes it easier). Use a sharp razor to prevent or reduce irritation, and use a lot of shave gel. There's products specifically for the bikini line.

Shave slowly and you will virtually eliminate any chance of cuts. Afterwards, it's best to apply neosporin or something similar, followed by a lotion, to prevent irritation/infection.
