about

Hi, I'm Laura. I'm a senior in college & I'm slowly deciding what I want to do with my life. I love Harry Potter, coffee, writing, and sleeping (amongst other things). I'll never claim to know everything, but I'm confident in my ability to help people with their problems. Feel free to send me an inbox question; I'll get back to you!
A few thoughts I've gathered from my teenage years (and being on this site for most of them!):
1. If you Google song lyrics, the song will come up 99% of the time.
2. Dress to fit your body type, and buy the size that fits. If you're a size 6, squeezing into a 4 won't make you look skinnier. It makes you look fat when you aren't.
3. You will never regret waiting to lose your virginity.
4. There is such a thing as a stupid question, but we're all allowed to ask them.
BU 2014 :)
wicked awesome conversations
^my forum, liven it up a little?
advice
Okay so I have no idea what I want for christmas other than uggs and gift cards so I was thinking I could ask for a bunch of expensive styling products that I would never buy myself. I have crazy curly/frizzy hair.
I have a curling iron but I'm not too impressed with it. Maybe it's just user error though, I'm not sure. What is the best curling iron. I was thinking about getting a waving iron too but do you think that would work if i have naturally curly hair?
I'm very happy with my straightener so I don't need a new one until this one breaks.
I also might want a new blow dryer. Does anyone know if those blowdryers that also straighten your hair work? I'll even have my hair blown out at salons and they can't even get it to not frizz so i'd need a really good blow dryer to blow out my hair. Also whats the best one for defusing?
As far as products go.... I'm lost. I'd like a curl cream that like stops frizz and defines curls but I haven't found a good one yet, i've tried a few gels and mousses too with not much luck. I'm also trying to grow my hair out so I'd like something that prevents heat damage and something that nourishes my hair. Other than that what's the best antifrizz serum?
Folica.com is a great resource for such things. They also sell all types/price ranges of products at a pretty good discount - 'cause hey, even if you can afford a $250 hair dryer, why not get it for half that? There's also tons of user reviews (some are in the thousands).
A girl in my dorm has one of those curling iron sticks... the ones without a clamp. It works so well, and also heats up to about 8378983458743 degrees. It curls hair without a crimp/tangling. Folica has a bunch.
Anyway, I'm always in search of the "perfect" cream and am yet to find one. Tigi/Catwalk makes a "curls rock" line [EDIT- the scruncing spray is called Frisky] and I only ever use it when I get my hair done at a salon, but it's really good!
The best anti-frizz serum I've ever used is Paul Mitchell Super Skinny.
It's fantastic.
It's a miracle worker.
I cannot rave about this product enough. It's about 20 dollars a bottle most places, but if there's a vocational school with a salon in your area, you can buy it for about 11 or 12. It lasts for months anyway, so it ends up being wicked inexpensive. The serum makes your hair dry faster too, without frizz. Even on days my hair isn't behaving, it's never frizzy/poofy because of this stuff.
I grew my hair out after middle school. I alternate between a bunch of shampoos, and really it's a matter of personal opinion as to what works best for your own hair; experiment and decide what you like. I alternate between Pantene - whatever the moisture collection is called now- and Garnier length&strength. I use Redken Iron Silk for heat protection. I get haircuts about 3 times a year (I'm lazy) and never have many splits at all.

were can i get a decent paying job at the age of 15 i have a three week old baby girl too help support
Grocery stores sometimes hire at age fifteen for somewhat limited hours. Small family businesses may also hire you, but otherwise you're out of luck 'til you're 16. Your best options are odd jobs for neighbors/family.

I spilled coke all over my backpack today and it got on my ipod. Is there anyway to fix it!?
DO NOT TRY AND TURN ON THE iPOD!
It's the stupidest thing you can do, yet it's everyone's first instinct. So don't do it. If you have, don't try again. (It shorts out the circuits when it tries to turn on)
Wipe off the excess Coke, which you probably did already, and put the iPod in a bag of dry, uncooked rice for about a week. I know it sounds strange but my mom's phone worked for a year after it was underwater for fifteen minutes.
Beyond that, there isn't much you can do. There's lots of sites that tell you how to open an iPod and repair it, only try that if your next course of action is buying a new iPod.
Good luck!

thank you.
Anytime :)
its alright :(
and if you have an app for texting..you still need internet for texting ??
Yeah you need a connection to the internet.
I don't know what to do with him! I found out from my bff that my bf made a facebook group thing about our relationshp. I went and red a few things on it and it is personal and nothing anybody should know but us so I told him I knew he had a secret he was keeping from me but not what it was so he would tell me or something but he didn't. i kinda thought that he posted stuff and didn't think it was bad and I wanted to give him chances to say so but he just said he didnt have no secrets so i went back to read the rest and he had made it private only so now it is hidden from me.
I guess what I am asking is if he didn't think this was wrong why did he hide it when i found out? He still denies everything and now i got no proof because i cant see it anymore!!! i have been crying about this and i feel betrayed like he has a secret life on facebook or something! should i stay with him if he isn't going to be honest and still hides things?
Sorry if this is too long!
I wouldn't put up with that. There seems to be a lot of dishonesty going on here and you can't be in a (good) relationship with someone you don't trust.
Ask your best friend to show you this group, see what's atually written, and then decide from there. See if he's actually writing anything, it might be a bigger group than you realize, etc etc. You should have all the information before making a decision.
Good luck
thanks hunny.
but unfortunaley they havent called me.
i think am just going to move on and apply somewhere else :(
- hey i have another question? you know the ipod touch that just came out 2010. well can you text on that ipod ..?? and also do you still need wifi to be able to text.? i dont know if you can tell me this information, but if you can it would be helpful.
thank you :)
Yeah you need wifi... so you'd have to be in a wifi hotspot on at someone's house with a network you can connect to. My friend used to text me on hers, there's apps for that :)
Sorry about the job... maybe you can call and ask for an update.
awww,thank youuu ;)
but in my job resume i forgot to ut the address of the school
and in the job application they asked e how much i get payed in the las job were i workk
uhh hopefully they dont deny me because of that :(
what do you think about that..?
I didn't put the address on mine. Just the town. Anyway it shouldn't matter too much. Don't stress over it. Make the correction for future jobs and move on ;]
And anyways asking how much you made is a standard question, basically right along with "what are your plans for the future?" or "what sort of hours do you want?"
My doctor says birth control is fully effective after a month. I've been on it for 2 weeks, how effective should it be right now? I usually use 2 methods for birth control (condoms and spermicide) because it makes me feel more comfortable. I just want to know when i can just use just one.
thanks.
TECHNICALLY, it's a week to a month depending on what day you start it and what sort of pill you're on. Most doctors recommend at least a month or two. Mine told me three, to err on the side of caution.

-[18/f]
Okay so I don't want my period the weekend of october 16th. The thing is I just got my period yesterday. On Sunday, I'm starting to take birth control pills because my period is way irregular. I've heard that you can control the time of your period a little bit when you're on birth control? How would I do this? If I just take like three pills from the next box to get me through the weekend and then take my filler pills and then take the rest of the pills from the new box would that work or would that just mess everything up? I also REALLY don't want break through bleeding AT ALL. I guess thats supposed to happen the first three months of being on birth control but is there any way to prevent it?
There really isn't any way to prevent it. But if it's any consolation, you won't have any after 2-3 pill packs if your body responds well to the pill. Don't take them out of order! You'll be messing with hormone levels. Which isn't fun.
You CAN skip periods by skipping inactive pills and starting a new pack right away. However, this can cause breakthrough bleeding later in the month. My doctor said people usually only do this for major events like weddings and honeymoons/vacations. So unless you're getting married it's probably best to avoid it ;]
However, you can decrease the liklihood of breakthrough bleeding SIGNIFICANTLY by taking your pill at the same time everyday, and not missing any. I set an alarm on my phone to go to off daily at 9 - so I remember to take my pill. Therefore I never had any issues :]
I know that sounds basic, but a lot of people take theirs at odd times, and this not only causes bleeding, it can change the day you get your period and reduce the effectiveness of the pill as well (particularly for pregnancy prevention). So if you take it everyday at the same time, you probably won't experience anything out of the ordinary.

thank you so much.
i really hope i get this job :)
You're welcome, and good luck!
18/f -sorry if this is really long, but i really need some advice!!
Last week, I was on vacation (close to home) and I met this guy there; he is younger than me but definitely on the same level as me. He lives about 20 minutes away from me. He is actually one of the most interesting and mature teenagers I know. I have never met anyone like him and I really want to spend more time with him because of this. We ended up hanging out the entire day and night that we first met. We also made plans to hang out again. I REALLY like him as a person, and i'm also pretty attracted to him. Since we met, I cannot stop thinking about him.
Here is what the problem is. When I met this guy, I was in a year-long relationship with this other guy. After I got home from vacation, nothing felt right with my then-boyfriend. I didn't break up with my boyfriend specifically because I met this new guy (there are other reasons that our relationship was going downhill, but meeting this new guy made me realize that I need to get out of my relationship.) Things are fine with my (ex)boyfriend now; we've decided to be friends and as hard as it is to let go of him, I know that I will be happier if we are friends.
When I was hanging out with the guy that I really like (that I met on vacation) he knew that I had a boyfriend, yet I could definitely feel the chemistry between us. I don't want to initiate anything though, because I don't want to freak this guy out or assume that he wants to be with me. After all, he could be a huge player; I don't know because I only hung out with him for one day (even though I feel like I've known him forever, and I didn't get a huge player vibe.) I don't even know if he likes me for sure. He might just think of me as a friend.
Some of the things that he did while we were hanging out made me think that he was into me. First of all, the fact that he gave me his number.
I didn't ask him for his number; he asked me for my phone and he put his number in my phone. To me this is significant because my friend (that was visiting me while I was on vacation) wrote him a flirty note with her number in it before she left, and he tactfully declined once she was gone.
Other things: In the middle of conversation, he said, "I'm not coming onto you, but you're pretty." and while we were on the beach, he carved me this stick and told me to keep it forever. And he took pictures of himself with my phone so that "i won't forget him." When it was cold during the night and I was wearing a teeshirt, he gave me his sweatshirt. His friend and I were making plans to hang out again, and he said not to go without him. And when we had to leave, he gave me a huge hug.
I get it that this guy thought I had a boyfriend, so I shouldn't jump to conclusions and think that he's in love with me. I get that.
What I'm worried about is that once he gave me his number, he told me to text him and say "hey it's (my name)." So i did text him that day. And I told him that I did, but he said that his phone was off because when we were on vacation we both had pretty bad service. Then right after he got back from vacation, he went to skateboarding camp for this week.
I never got a text back from him. I added him on facebook and myspace, but he accepted me without saying anything. I really want to hang out with him before this summer ends, (and there's not much time because school starts soon) but I don't want him to think that I'm desperate, so I haven't texted him since. I don't know what to think.
I feel like if he really liked me, he would have at least texted me back when I sent him that message that day.
On one hand, he could be thinking that I don't want to talk to him because I have a boyfriend. (I haven't talked to him since, so he doesn't know that we broke up) Maybe he just isn't a big texter. Or maybe he's a huge player and doesn't REALLY want to see me again. There's so much going through my head that I don't know what to think. What do you think? Could there be a reason that he hasn't texted me? Should I text him again? I was thinking that I could text him now that he's back from skateboarding camp and ask him if he still wants to hang out and mention specific places that we said we wanted to go with each other.
In my mind I'm kind of obsessing over this, but there's no way I will show him that I am in any way obsessed. What should I do?? And what do you think is going through his mind?
Thank you so much.
I'd send him a message on facebook. Keep it somewhat short (in other words, he doesn't want a novel showing up in his inbox) and ask how skateboarding camp was. Mention a couple places to hang out, and give him YOUR number too :]
This way, if he's still interested (at least a little) he'll have the option of checking your profile for your relationship status, pics of a boyfriend, etc. Neither of you seem stalkerish this way =P and no I'm not saying you were haha.
If you do indeed hang out again, the conversation will eventually lead to your (now ex)boyfriend. Make it clear that the two of you are broken up & that you're single now :]
If after attempting to contact him, and it's obvious he's read it, he probably saw what you "had" as a harmless little thing. Again, it's difficult to know for sure, because sometimes guys just don't text back. Or they forget, erase your message before saving your number, crush their phones at skateboarding camp. You know. Normal occurences.
Good luck :)
haha i live like 27 minutes away from boston, mass :)

Should I expect my breasts to get any bigger if I'm on Lutera? I'm just now starting it, but I need to go bra shopping and I'm wondering if I should wait a few months just in case they get bigger?
I'd buy a couple bras now. I mean... you need them. Some people's breasts get bigger, others do not. It depends on your body, and also some people think it's the pill, when in actuality they were going to grow anyway. I didn't really notice a significant difference when I started it & I didn't gain weight from it either. I just grew normally over time :] If you're one hundred percent convinced yours will grow, get a bra you can adjust, that will help somewhat.

Hi, I am an 18f. So my boyfriend is coming over; he is the same age. Since I have a fractured foot, I was wondering if you have any ideas of how we can make our time more interesting together instead of just hanging out watching movies.. you know? Any ideas would be appreciated, thanx!
Awwwwuh. It's cute he's taking care of you. Oh and if he isn't, make him :] That could be fun by itself, haha. But be sure to take care of him when HE needs it of course.... it's only fair!
How immobile are you? Could you limp to a movie or out to lunch? If not, and you're not opposed to being pushed around, ask people you know, or even your doctor, if there's a transport chair you can borrow. It's a wheelchair without the push thingies on the wheels, so someone else pushes you. That could enable you to go places if that's an option. [They also fold up flat, so they can fit in a regular car]
Other ideas:
- Bake something
- Have him reorganize the furniture in your room (with his input of course so it's not like slave labor)
- Order terrible, cringe-worthy free movies on demand. Make fun of the acting.
- Create a fort in the living room & make popcorn. Tell stores.
- Watch each other's favorite shows.
- Read together. Anything from a novel to Seventeen works. My guy friends love reading Cosmopolitan out loud... men :)
- Sit and talk. What a crazy concept in today's world ;]
- Play Rummy, Dominoes, Go Fish, 4 Kings in the Corner, etc. The rules for these can be found online; I'm a bit rusty on a few of them so I'm not much help.
- Have a picnic. If you can't walk at all, maybe he can carry you outside? Also, sitting on the ground makes having your leg out less awkward.
- Make up good stories as to how you broke your foot (if there isn't already a good one)
Oh and pleaseeeee, if you have the chance, go to a store and use one of those motorized carts! Short of working at a store and being given the task of returning them to the front, this is your only chance to use one without getting in trouble. They're fun to drive around :]
Hope you heal soon! =D

thank you soo muchhh!!!!! you have helped me soo much on this i really appreaciate it :) :D .
- the only thing about education colum is that i been in high school for 3 yrs. i have done clean water for kids, i have done stand and deliver, am in grade 12 now. so like how do i put all this in order ?, and also this is my first time working so my "experience section" is going to be short :(
You'd put 2007-present for your "time spent" at the school (or whatever year you entered as a freshman). Some people choose to put their class rank, but you don't have to. If you're at a vocational school or something similar, put your major/shop underneath the school. Otherwise you can put the school, the time period, and the location [ex, Boston, Massachusetts] just like you would a job. When you're in high school, and even college, being a student is like having a job because of the time commitment. Also I put activities in which I had a leadership role under this column, as it was so important during my school years.
You can put anything volunteer on there. My resume had the headline "Work and Volunteer Experience" so everything fit on there. Remember to put them in reverse chronological order (most recent at the top!)
Having the experience section be short isn't a dealbreaker. Especially if it's a grocery store. They KNOW it's you're first/second real job ever and aren't expecting someone with years of expertise. Doesn't take that much to bag groceries ;]
Use a normal font for everything. It doesn't have to be Times New Roman, I like Arial Narrow - and it fits more stuff on a page. When you make the header, though, make it stand out a bit. It looks nifty, haha
Lastly, make sure someone else proofreads your resume. Preferably two people. I find mistakes in published novels, yet I missed at least four on my first draft. Also, browse through my answers on here. You'll find more than a few typos that I missed :]
If I'm taking birth control for my acne and anti-depressants, can I still donate blood?
Yes. It doesn't matter, at least not to the American Red Cross. Only a few medications are on the restricted list and birth control isn't one of them.
I don't recall seeing antidepressants on the list... I remember Accutane, blood thinners, and some other drug that wasn't an antidepressant.
However, as russianspy said, some states might have their own rules for donation centers that aren't the Red Cross.

thankk youuu hunny :)
i want to write a remuse but that thing is that i been searching in google to see if i can find an example and they all look different :(
do you know of a website where i can write my remume really good ?? only if you can i would really appreaciate it , the thing is that i want a job and i really hope they take me there :D :) .
and thanks for my job resume i put accounting/receptionist,selling overflow bags & picking up he phone as a customer service? do you think that part sounded good? "customer service"? uh , i just need help with that little part and the resume , thank you :) i would appreciate it .
Yes, that sounds good. When I revised my resume I put a section underneath the job describing what my responsibilities were. So yours would look something like:
City Hall 2009- present
Accounting/Receptionist
Responsibilities included selling overflow bags & picking up the phone as a receptionist.
And the thing with resumes is that there's many ways to make it look eye catching, just so long as it's still professional you have a fair amount of leeway here. It's good to make columns line up and stuff. I had a lot of help with mine and i suggest having a trusted adult help you :) And the sample online are pretty good.
I liked this one, only 'cause it looks like mine haha: - http://www.thejobexplorer.com/Resume_Template/images/resume-example.gif
I didn't read it that much, but you'll notice how the locations of the jobs, the years worked, and the job titles all line up. That's important.
so i forgot to take my pill at 7:30 last night and ended up taking it around 2 today, and i took my one for today at my regular time. Except I just got my period...I was wondering if it will last the whole week or if i keep taking my normal pills will it stop it? Also, should i still take the week of placebos next week or skip over to a new pack?
Keep taking your pills normally. Taking a pill late once in a blue moon won't make your period come early or anything like that. Depending on how many placebo pills you have you might get your period while you're taking them, or even after you're done with them. You CAN skip the placebo pills to AVOID your period (but I've been told it's not recommended because it can screw up your period- so don't do that, haha. People usually do this for things like a wedding or major vacation).
Your period can last anywhere from a few days to about a week on the pill, at least that's the norm. If you've started taking it within the past few months, give your period time to regulate. Soon it'll be coming like clockwork.
If you've been in the pill for a long time & this is an abnormal thing, talk to whoever prescribed them at your next appointment. You might need to switch brands or something like that.
