Does God Exist?

Question Posted Thursday January 6 2005, 7:21 am

In the aftermath of the tsunami, the eternal theological question is again posed: what sort of God permits the slaughter of blameless humanity on such a scale?

On the abundant available evidence does it not seem that, if there is or was a God, it is now malevolent, mad or dead?

No, religious nutters please - this is a serious question I'm posing.

I'm Wiccan but I'm gonna switch over to beliving God for a sec.

Maybe he did it to bring our world together? I mean, 911, Wars, Sicknesses. It all just tears our world to shreds. Maybe he did it to make us all feel sympthetic and bring the world together. I mean, Look at all of the fundraisers that there are now, Red Cross, Schools donating, Gel braclets. As some say "God does everything for a reason!"

Have you ever stopped to think that maybe God doesn't make things happen nor does he stop things from happening? I'm clinically depressed and whenever things get really bad I always remember when my old youth pastor told me that God cried with me. God cried for the tsunami victims. He didn't kill them.

The tsunami is part of Jesus' second coming. It is said that disaster will come in parts of the world where people refuse to accept the Lord as their Savior. Just because something bad happened, it doesn't mean there's no God. He does everything for a purpose.

I have many friends who are atheists who ask questions like this all the time. I myself, am not an atheist...I'm more of a nature worshipper, I'm Wiccan if you want to get technical. But my view of the Higher Power is a bit different from everyone elses. I believe there is a Higher Power, but I don't believe in creationism or anything. I believe that science is the God and Godesses' blueprint for everything, and even though I have chosen to believe in a Deity(ies), I often ask that question as well. I believe that the Deities don't really control anything. We are responsible for our own destiny. I alos believe that there is scientific reasoning for everything that goes on around us, we just have to explore it. I'm also a bit of a Marxist. Nothing happens out of "God's Wrath" no, there is a scientific explanation. Now, why the Deities would let things like this go on...perhaps to test our strength as a people...A horrible test true, but...There are nos uch things as coincidencesa and there are no such things as accidents, depending on what you're a Doctor of, you may agree with me.

Well its like this. A tsunami, if a effect of nature, and not god. And it would be stupid to intervene and stop the wave, as if you intervene too much, people depend on you, and if you intervene not enough, people stop to beleive in you. Thats if you were god. Like I heard somewhere, when you do things right, people won't be sure if you've done anything at all. Alot of death of people on earth is caused by people killing people anyways. We have to be the most stupid species on earth.. We are killing ourselves off. You could probably name 10-20 other species with brains no bigger than a apple or a orange who kill eachother off. Makes you think, dosen't it -.-

You're asking to have 'no religious nutters' answer a question that is generally going to attract people who believe in a god of some kind.

No one can really answer this question. It's a matter of belief. There is no 'abundant available evidence' saying "ooh! There's a god!" or not. Even what people see as evidence depends on the person looking at it. Not to mention, some people even believe there is more than one god, or that their 'god' is not an actual being.

If there is a god, I have a lurky feeling that he/she's just a really spoiled child, playing with his toys.

kariana217 answered Thursday January 6 2005, 10:51 pm:
You have asked a number of questions.
First, Yes, God does exist.
Second, God is loving, kind, merciful, generous, and compassionate, BUT this same God is also just, strong, jealous, and vengful. His love is better than the most wonderful thing in the world, but His wrath is worse than any tsunami, war, or earthly pain we can even imagine.
Thirdly, God is not malevolent (or malicious, spiteful, or wicked) or mad (angry, upset, crazy or insane) or dead. God is the same yesterday, today and forever.
I would not consider myself a religious nut, and I hope I have not come off as such.

I don't know why He let this horrible disaster happen. He was and is aware of it, and I am certain that He is saddened by this loss of many people. I am not one to question Him. He has a plan in all of this, even when we (myself included) fail to see this.

By the way, this was not a punishment for those "non-Christians" God does not will that one human die without knowing Him.

"Just maybe these people brought this pain among themselves. Have you noticed the the tsunami hit in the asian countries, those that do not worship God? "

That is the most horrible statement I have ever heard...the belief that these people died because they were not Christian. (Well, the majority.) Who are you? Jerry fucking Falwell?

Let's look at the definition of a tsunami: "A very large ocean wave caused by an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption."

In other words, there's a very logical explanation for what happened.

Now, why does anyone feel the need to bring a deity into the equation?

And if God willed it, what of the Christians who were there? Wrong place at the wrong time? You really think that God would do that to make the world a better place? What kind of fucking god do you people worship? I always thought it was supposed to be a kind and loving god. The ones these types of Christians promote is a god of vengence, jealousy, and hatred. The only reason why I can imagine someone would choose to follow a god like is out of fear, or because they get a kick out of random death and destruction. I could have sworn those were called Satanists.

These people did not die because God willed it. They died because a huge fucking tidal wave raped the land.

I have a lot more to say, but I'm not going to put it down. That would be enough to write a novel.

what sort of God permits this? A loving God. Isn't it true that if you truly love your child you will discipline it? that shows love. Just maybe these people brought this pain among themselves. Have you noticed the the tsunami hit in the asian countries, those that do not worship God? Speaking as if you were a teen, If you beat up a person and your parents were to ground you can you really ask what kind of parents would ground an innocent child? It says in the bible that God is a jealous God, he doesn't like to see us worship other gods. He took away those who were sinning and weren't ever going to come to Christ. He also called home those who were meant to go home.
As far as does God exist? Let's assume that God didn't exist. How did we get here? the big bang theory? how can nothingness hit nothingness and out of nothing comes something? Where did the particles in space come from? where did the empty space come from? Isn't it easier to belive we had a creator than to belive something poofed out of nothing? Look outside, what do you see? Trees, grass, birds, houses, people. They all came from God. Everyone knows that God exists in their hearts is just whether or not they choose to listen to their hearts. If your doubting then God has to exist. If I look straight infront of me I see a computer. If I look to my right I see nothing. I don't doubt that there could be a table there because I can clearly see that there isn't a table. My point is why would you doubt something if it clearly wasn't there. You don't doubt unless something is there. It's your choice whether or not you want to believe in God, but I know he's there. If you want to talk about it feel free to e-mail me or drop one in my inbox. Hope this makes you think

This is a difficult question to answer as there is evil everyday. People kill, rob, and rape all the time. Accidents happen and the earth does shift and it really shifted this time. I believe God exists, but if you don't,it's your freedom to believe what you wish. What kind of God lets 9/11 happen? Well, let me ask you:Is there such a thing as cold? No there isn't. Cold is the absence of heat. Evil is the absence of good. God is good, you do the math.

Notso answered Thursday January 6 2005, 12:53 pm:
we talked about this in our philosphy class and some of theories I found most interesting were maybe God was using it to keep the population down, or it is like the second Noah's Ark.

Let's face it, in either situation, if God had just come down and said "stop being bad" or "NO MORE BABIES" would we have listened? It takes actions for God to get his point across, look at Adam and Eve, God said "don't eat this apple", they ate it anyway so God had to prove his power and banish them. Would Christianity have taken off if Jesus was just the son of God on earth who preached humanity? His gruseome death and resurrection most likely garnered more belief in him than his good will towards fellow man.

I'm going to explain the Noah's ark theory a bit more. In the bible, God made Noah build an ark so he could wipe out the rest of the population. It's now been hypothesised that this flood did occur, but only in the Middle East. It is easy for us to accept that the people killed in that flood were baby eating heathens, because we didn't know them. Personally I think it is safe to assume that some of those killed were actually a-okay people who had to go to. If bad stuff didn't happen to good faith abiding people too, everyone would claim a false sense of belief in God, as not to be killed. Because this event is so close to us, it's hard to step back and belive this, especially since children were killed. I have to return to my original point of show not tell. Besides that Billy Joel song does say "only the good die young" ;) (This is so not the place to be making jokes). Another coincidence between Noah's Ark and the tsunami, most of the animals knew it was coming and fled for the hills. Relatively few animals were killed, just like in the ark because God had Noah take two of each on.

Or this could simply be an issue of God letting us have tonnes of free will. God doesn't stop you from stubbing your toe, even though he can, maybe it is the same thing with the tsunamis.

Personally, I don't really apply any religious theory to why it happened. It just did, but I can understand why anyone would be unwilling to accept that as a reasonable answer.

ignite answered Thursday January 6 2005, 12:44 pm:
You are not alone with this question - many seek or even demand answers to your question now.

There are two specific areas of your question which we can examine to perhaps throw light upon it.

First, God "permits" nothing! From the beginning, He has woven perfection into the great Laws of Creation which govern us all. Some of these are well-known to us through various teachings brought to mankind through the ages. For example, "you reap what you sow", or the Law of Karma. Viewed rightly, this one law guarantees ultimate justice in creation - the perfect Laws take care of it automatically.

This leads to the second point in question - "blameless humanity". If indeed the Laws ensure justice, then we must assume those carried away cannot be entirely "blameless". Certainly, if viewed from the perspective of each of us living one single earthlife, this does not make sense. Many children have perished, for instance. But allow for the concept of reincarnation, and our understanding immediately changes. Past errors must be redeemed, even if in a following earthlife.

These concepts are fully explained in the book "In the Light of Truth", the Grail Message by Abd-ru-shin.

I don't really know what I believe in. God can be testing us, or maybe God dosn't even exist. I've been doubtful lately, myself. I'm Christian, but since the tsunami, I have no idea what to think--------I'm even starting to believe in evolution and the Big Bang Theory because scientists have proof. So, was God really made up by people for comfort, so that there was SOMETHING to believre in, something to pray for? Or does he really posess all these so-called powers? Nobody knows, but I'm destined to find out. I know I just sinned and compromised my Christianity by doubting Him, but thats iight.

Crysta-Ann answered Thursday January 6 2005, 10:27 am:
I get what you mean. Here's my theory; God doesn't interfere with us, because God wants us to solve things for ourselves. God is testing us, to see if we can handle it. I get what you mean though, with all the things that are happening lately, it's hard to believe that God cares about us. I believe that everything happens for a reason, you could call it fate, destiny, or coincidence. But I believe that everything was meant to be, not necesarilly planned by God though. God made us free, to make our own choices and deal with our own problems. It's not that God doesn't care, but that God believes that we can handle it ourselves. I don't know what kind of God there is, I don't know If there's one or one thousand, man or woman, both or neither. But I do know that whatever force there is, it cares about us. I hope that you can find your own beliefs and answers. Good Luck!

Ha. religious nutters. i know exactly what you mean, trust men, i know a few people like that and i am proud to not be one of them.

is it possible that this was just the effect of some environmental imbalance? im a hardcore catholic, i however do not believe in divine intervention. so i do not think that God "sent" the tsunami to teach us a lesson, cleanse the earth, etc. It's interesting really, how certain events and choices we make can effect the future. just think, one little ecological decision we make could in retrospect have caused the tsunami. perhaps i'll get bombarded by "religious nutters" as you call them, but to me, catholicism is a way of life, much less a driving divine force seeking vengeance on those who do not believe.
