Hey Everyone :) I'm Kate and a level 2 mod on here. I've had this account since July 2004, so I've been on here since I was 13! Wow ... crazy for me to think how long ago that was. I will admit I don't check in as often as I once did, but being away at college, being in a sorority, and having a job when I'm not at school is very time consuming. I still try to help out as much as possible, and if you send me a question I WILL answer it. This site helped me a LOT when I was in high school and had a lot of questions, and I'm here to help anyone who needs it :) Feel free to write in my forum or send me a question any time!

Hi, i am a female junior high school b ball player and i was wondering...Ive always wanted to get recruited and play at a (small) division 1 b ball school.... but what do you think about me not going to college for sports....like have you ever heard of a great high school player that didn't move on? i meant i almost have my 1000 points and i averaged 22pts last season and i just feel like i should be playing college b ball....what do you think?

EDIT: Sorry, you said "i am a female junior high school b ball player" so I assumed that by the typing and phrasing, you were saying you were in junior high, not a junior in high school. Either way, if you were going to play in college, you'd know by now. Your chances aren't great if you haven't already been scouted. [/edit]
------------------

We've had a few great players on my high school basketball team, and they all play in college, but none of them play on any big teams...

They play in places such as Salem and NC AT&T... (We live in NC).

However, there is an amazing sophomore and an awesome junior who have had scouts looking at them for what seems like years - they're getting looked at by places like UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University - even though those places are mostly popular with boys basketball, they still have an amazing bball program.

It all depends on your skill, what high school you attend (is basketball popular there? Will scouts know about the school?), and how hard you work towards the goal and how badly you want it.

You're only in junior high! If you make varisty your freshman year, then start talking to your coaches. If you make varsity your sophomore year, talk to your coaches. If you don't make varisty until your junior year, don't expect much - you aren't as good as you think.

Once you start playing high school ball, talk to you coaches about where they think you are and if they think you've got a shot at playing college and even pro.

There are always people who play in high school and don't make it in college or beyond, it's all up to your skill, your ambition, your drive, and your willingness to WORK!
Good luck.

Hi, I'm about to play a grand final game for soccer next saturday and my coach wants me to play forward (attack).

How can i "get past the goalie"??

Any tips will be helpful!

Thanks in advance.

Kronix

Whenever I went to score I would just kind of charge - scare the goalie a bit as if I wasn't going to stop and then put all the force and power I have into an awesome kick.

Although I LOVE what Alin had to say - he had some pretty awesome advice. I just thought I'd share what I've done before.

It's always good to intimidate the other team - they get scared of you and although the goalie is usually the player who can handle that "fear" the best because they're used to soccer balls and such coming at them - it will still work sometimes.

Other than the kind of charge/intimidate method I suggest doing what Alin says.

How many hours does a high school football game last?

It is different with each school.
At my school kickoff is usually about 7pm and the game ends anywhere between 9:45 and 10:30.

It really depends on how good the team your team is playing, if the kickoff is on time, if they play the game to the last second or if they stop it a minute early because one team is losing too drastically to catch up, etc.

I would say plan on it being about 3 hours give or take 20 minutes.

Hey guys. well i just got my cartillage pierced on my right ear and its only a little stud. Well, i play basketball and we can wear earings during practice as long as there not dangly, but we have a game on wednesday and i just got my piercing done this previous wednesday. do you think it would be ok if i took it out for an hour while i play in the game or will it close up?

It most likely will close up, I've had holes that close up after a year even though I wore the earing for longer than the reccomended period of time. I'll tell you what we had to do in P.E (gym class) back in middle school (junior high) when we aren't allowed to wear piercings. If they are new and you are not able to take them out without them closing then you have to like tape your ear. Put one of those big bandages over it. Usually if it's a stud it's okay. A teacher that I had back in the 7th or 8th grade had a piercing ripped from her ear once, something about a basketball coming towards her and a girl went to grab it but got her ear instead, it was also a dangly one. Usually you're safer with studs. When I played soccer we just had to bandage our ears. Talk to your coach and ask him/her if you can just bandage your ear. If not then ONLY take out the earing when you actually go in to play, if you're sitting on the bench then leave them in!! If you see a lot of playing time well then hopefully it won't close up too bad and you can still poke them through, it might hurt a little bit but it's either that or pierce them all over again!!

Ok well I'm just learning to skateboard, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any cheap but GOOD skateboards I could get. I mean inexpencive but really good boards. Thanks.

Well I know at Sun and Ski sports they have boards that already come equipped with everything you need and they don't cost more than 20. But then you have your element boards (and all other brands... I'm not a skater but my brother is, so is on of my good friends) and when you get the board, the trucks, and all the other parts that go on it, it totals to be around $100-$120. I personally consider the price good because the skateboards are really good. Why I don't skateboard-- I can't afford to skateboard haha. But if you drop a line in my inbox (trust me, it is the ONLY way I'd remember) then I can have my skateboarding friend answer this sometime tonight or tomorrow.

But I'm in a rush to get to school (waking up late-- not a smart thing) so I can't go into much detail on what I actually know.
If you have a Sun and Ski sports near you (it would probably be in the local mall) I'd check it out, it's pretty good, at least I think so!!

in football today i broke a kids neck and he's parylized from the neck down. im fine with it, completly, really i am. i think i was just doing my job. but im not sure how i should act about it. should i just act like i feel bad or somethin?

Are you serious? Somehow I doubt it, but if you are, then wow!
I mean I guess you don't have to be sorry, I'd be freaking sorry though. The parents aren't going to like press charges or anything?! You'd be getting of pretty easily. I guess if you don't feel sorry, well then, you don't feel sorry, I don't like the bit about you pretending to care, you ruin somebodys life and you have no feelings on it?! Well just think how you would feel if you were parylized. Anyway, I think you should apologize or at least visit him if he's still in the hostpital or whatever. I, personally, would feel horrible, obviously you don't, but you should do something to show you're sorry or that you care whether you do or you don't.

ok.. i have this vball camp! i hate it!! seriously! i wanna quit.. but i can't tell my mom because i am scared! ahh! she payed 135 bucks! help

Well it depends, how old are you? Do you have a job? Maybe you can quit camp and pay her back? If not, then you'll have to stick it through. Or why do you hate it? Are you no longer into the sport, are people being really mean to you, is there something really bad about it? If so, tell your mom what it is that is bothering you and see if she'll let you quit. But if it's just because it's no fun, or something somewhat important to you, but not worth wasting the $135, then try and stick it out. How long will camp be? If it's not too long then try, if it's just a day camp, then whats the worst that will come out of going. Now if it was like a month long and it's not worth the money and you can't get your money back, see if you can explain to your mom why you want to quit and that you'll try and pay her back the best you can as fast as you can. Try and get yourself some babysitting jobs around where you live so you can earn money to pay her back with. I don't doubt your mom will be mad. I was on a soccer team back in 7th grade, it cost my mom about $100, and nobody was any good, maybe only 3 or 4 of us, out of the only 3 games I went to, we won one, lost one, and tied one, but the only reason we won one was because the other teams goalie and best player hurt his leg and had to sit out, and noone else on the team was good at being a goaly. Anyway, I have a point, I quit the team, never showed up to another practice or game because it wasn't fun for me. My mom was mad at me for quitting but she got over it. Your mom will get over it too, just explain it to her as best you can and see what she says.
Anyway, remember winners never quit. I do regret quitting because I missed out on making good friends and helping others learn to play better, but unless other people are harassing you, or it's way too bad and you NEED to quit, try and stick it through. Sorry for repeating myself, but I don't think you should quit unless it's really bad. Just explain the situation, offer to pay her back as you get money, and ummm, thats all I got :-). Hope everything goes okay, good luck with camp... or without it!!

i am a good player at basketball, baseball and football, but i can never work up the nerve to try out for my school to try to make the team. i would really like to play all three next year. please give me some advice to work up confidence to try out.

Well if you know the coach talk to him or her about it. Just say you were thinking about going out for the team but you weren't sure if you'd be good enough. Coaches and teachers and stuff are a lot easier to talk to than ya think. But just practice a lot this summer, that way you'll improve even more and you'll have more skill and better chances. But the worst that can happen is getting cut. It happens to a lot of people. I don't remember who told me or who they were talking about. But some b-ball player thats is or was famous, well back in his day, he was cut during tryouts. He only made it his senior year, and that's when he was finally noticed by a scout who let him play college ball and then he went on to the pros. I really wish I could remember who it was, but still that might boost your confidence a little.
But you can talk to the coach, or anyone else, you have to practice and improve in at least one or two of the three, and then go to tryouts with your head held up, don't get cocky, make sure you're a team player, and try out for all three. That way if you don't make one at least you'll have a chance at another. And also, about being a team player, I know people who have gotten cut because though they were really good, they were ball hogs, and stuff like that. So play your best, but give others a chance to play theirs. And just show up and give it a shot, you have nothing to lose. Good luck!!

i used to play for my school/parish soccer team which is U-14 as far as i know and this year im going to be a freshman but i dont wanna go out for high school soccer...id rather play rec league. do you think i should ask if i can still play since it is a school AND parish team or should i just let it go? thanks in advanced!

I love soccer, I'm pretty good too, but anyway, I think doing it for the school would probably be better. Unless you don't like the coach or something, that's why I wouldn't want to go out for the school team, I'm not too crazy about the coach.
But if you go out for the school team then you'll get to know more people at school, you'll have some people to eat lunch with on the first day if you don't know others, and many other reasons. Entering high school is always fun, but there will be more homework, and more tests and stuff like that, so I think both would be too much, but if you think you can handle it I would do both!!
But the final decision if up to you, do which ever you would rather do. Whichever you think would be more fun for you.

Is it true that during basketball girls are supposed to run up stairs and walk down them?

Do you mean doing stadiums? (running up and down the bleachers) We used to do those in P.E. Stadiums is a good workout, but it can be difficult if you aren't in shape and stuff.
But no, it's not true that girls are "supposed" to do them. They can do them while working out. Also it could be used as a punishment by the coach. Like if the girls lose a game, or if they are slacking then the coach could say to run stadiums until she says to stop.

There is nothing you can do but wait.

hi, i just want to know if anyone has some really good shooting tips for basketball. im a great player on defence but mmy shootings only like80 percent please help

Practice, A LOT. Try and find a sweet spot, but you never know if you'll always be able to shoot from the sweet spot so practice in other areas too.
Umm, I found this link. http://members.tripod.com/%7Ecoacheshome/shooting.html

This is where that link came from... http://www.knowledgehound.com/topics/basketba.htm

This site is okay too... http://www.2muchgame.com/shooting_tips.asp?shooting_drills=2

Basketball--- definitley the best sport ever :)
Good luck, and practice makes perfect!!

Then again... practice makes perfect, nobody is perfect, so why practice?
To get as close to perfect as you can!!

okay..im ending my freshman year. I realized theres one thing i know i could do for the rest of my life, thats play basketball. Now theres a real problem which is im only 5'4 and i dought ill get to much taller maybe 5'7 5'8 IF im lucky. Well this summer im gunna train for ball but STAY on JV so I can be with the same coach. Im talkin bout followin a strict diet all of that.

Do you just think im wastin my time? I mean I do live in a small town where hardly anyone gets noticed and i do have a height disadvantage.

Your height doesn't matter. I mean if you have the skill then play. Basketball is like ( in my opinion) the best sport, it's one of my favorites. If you have the skill, and you have the love for the game, then why not try your hardest, and why not do all you can to make it all the way. If and when scouts come to your school usually they come to watch someone they've heard a lot about. But they won't just be watching that person. They might come for one person, but leave wanting another. It all depends.
I mean you should ALWAYS have a back up plan just in case basketball doesn't work out for you professionally. Like keep your grades up so you can get into college, maybe even try playing some college ball. It doesn't matter where you live. Scouts come and go. It just matters that you love the game, you can play the game, and you WANT to play the game.
I don't want to get your hopes up because I've never seen you play. I LOVE basketball, but I know I don't have the skill to make it big since I've only really liked it for the last 2 years now. I'm the same age as you and I'd loooooove to play basketball for the school and stuff like that, but I don't have the skill and I wish I did. You're lucky to be good enough for a school team. And truly height doesn't matter. I mean unless you're taking the jump shot or something like that. Or if you're trying to goal tend which isn't even allowed... I'm only 5'2 but I'm pretty good, in my opinion I'm not good enough for a school team though because I can't follow plays and all that stuff, I just play the game. But if you have the skill USE it. If it doesn't work out then make sure you have a back up plan for college and all that. Maybe when you're older you can work as a p.e teacher and coach the basketball team(s) there. Who knows what'll happen. All you can do is dream, and hope the dreams come true.
Good luck. Have fun!

Hey, i play for an AAU basketball team and im in charge of making the teams warm up cd and i have no clue what to put on it! If anyone has any ideas of good songs to put on the cd plz let me no! Were all into the whole hip hop thing, and were all over 17, cussing is not a problem. Thanks much :)

4. Still Ballin-Tupac ft. Trick Daddy
5. Not In My House-Nelly

Does anyone know of any basketball camps for in the summer?? cause my dad and i are going to try to find some for me..! please answer!*~ i rate..

and if you have any questions for me just ask =)
*thanks a bunch*

I don't live where you do, but most likely a basketball coach at your school, or just a P.E (gym) teacher would know of some. Or do you know places where you can play rec sports? Contact those places and they might let you know of some camps. But if you know the basketball coach at your school, then ask him/her, if not ask your phys ed teacher.
Gotta go. Later

Okay I really love to swim and cheelead but next year I will be a freshman and I will need to chose.. I love both.. but which one would be better for me?? I am 14 and I have a pretty busy life.. my sister is also a cheerleader and she quit swimming.. plz help me out.. but now i got to go to 7th hour in school.. thank you..

Kaydee

Well cheerleading in my opinion would be a lot more fun. You'd stay fit, you'd make lots more friends (from the people on the squad, and people on the teams) you'd get to go to all the games (FOR FREE) you'd get to go to competititons, and well you're hair doesn't get all gross. I love to swim, but if I had the choice between the two I'd choose cheerleading. Though I'm more of a basketball person myself. I find that sport a lot of fun, well basketball and soccer. I'm super good at soccer, but I'm pretty good at basketball. But I'd go with cheerleading. It's all up to you though.

There's this dancing game DDR and its like the funnest game ever but its $60 for the pad and the game. I really want it but i dont know if i should get it. Someone Please help!!!!

I think that game is worth it!! It is a really super fun game! We played it during lunch at school (a battle of the sexes thing, of course the girls won :-P) But anyways, if you have the money, and if there isn't anything else you really wanted to spend the money on, then buy it. Dance dance revolution is super fun, and if it's raining outside, or if you're bored and home alone, then it's definitley something fun to play. In my opinion, as long as there isn't something else you want to spend your money on, then DDR is WORTH IT!
