I came here to answer computer questions. (This used to say "...and nothing more.")

What I meant was, I don't know how much help I would be with other things... NOT that I would be upset if you asked a non computer question!

okay, so yeah...i am very dumb when it comes to most technology. So I got a digital camera for christmas and i'm using the batteries it came with and i have no idea how to charge it now that it's dead. So yeah, i went through my entire booklet trying to find it, but i have had no luck...I have a ViviCam 5100 so if anyone knows what i'm supposed to do or wants to point out how its right in front of my face or really easy and that i'm really technology challenged, that would be helpful since i am utterly confused... (link)
Dear How do I charge the batteries in a Vivitar Vivicam 5100,

I don't know if this will make you feel better, or worse, but I have the answer for you...

You can't figure out how to charge the batteries that shipped with your Vivicam5100 because... they are regular alkaline batteries. :-)

The camera doesn't have facilities to recharge batteries onboard, because they expect you to buy an endless stream of top quality disposable batteries. :-(

Of course, you can work around this by purchasing a regular charger for AA batteries and a few sets of AA rechargeable batteries.

I recommend NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) or Lion (Lithium Ion) type rechargeables.

Do NOT use old fashioned NiCAD (Nickel Cadmium) batteries, as they are completely outmoded, and very bad for delicate electronics like your Vivicam 5100.

When you upgrade the camera eventually, always try to get one with factory rechargeable batteries. I am particularly fond of Sony, as their battery life, in my experience is multiple times what others offer in real life usage, while being a high quality camera with all the best features.

I hope you feel better, not worse about this news of disposable batteries. :-)

P.S. I found a page of reviews at Amazon that will give you the lowdown on the quirks of this camera. Very helpful info, and I suggest you read them all, even though some duplicate each other's content:

Okay, so my boyfriend bought me a pink iPod nano for christmas [4gb] I have a few questions. You can answer one or all, whatever. But if you have an answer, please let me know. Cause the instructions that come with it SUCKS!!

1- I plugged my iPod in, before I installed iTunes. It says "Do Not Disconnect" What will happen if I do??

2- How do I make it on my iTunes account where I don't have to put in my credit card number. Also, if I get ready to put it in, Can I add it?

Thanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :] (link)
(Please skip the part about iTunes... I wrote this yesterday, and don't have time at the moment to edit it down to your situation only. Sorry about that. I also don't know what to tell you about question #2 Always best to ask each question individually for more suitable answers.)

You can damage your computer, your iPod or both when you just yank the cable out while the iPod screen says "Do Not Disconnect!"

All you should need to do is open iTunes, select your iPod, and click the "eject" button.

This tells your iPod video (or nano, shuffle, click wheel, etc) to get ready to be unplugged.

It makes sure the disk or memory in the iPod isn't doing anything important at the time, and reduces the load on the USB port to help guard against voltage spikes.

If you do that, and are sure you clicked the eject button, but still have no luck, then (if you are a windows user) look in the system tray (down where it shows the time) for an icon that looks like a little gray block or card with an arrow.

Double click that, and it will list anything hooked up tp your computer's USB ports.

Select your iPod Video, and tell it you want to disconnect it. It will then make it safe to remove as far as the computer is concerned.

If you STILL have that message, head over to:

http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/donotdisconnect/index.shtml

... for a complete walkthrough of everything you can try.

Good luck,

DN.

The related question:

http://www.advicenators.com/qview.php?q=464023

Hi there, this is Duudee_advicer,
When I opened up advicenators today it required me to type in my password (I had it saved on here) Well, when I typed in my password it said it was not correct (I haven't changed it) so I hit Forgot Password and typed in my email adress. It also said my email address was incorrect, which it shouldn't be because I have not changed it. How do I log in if its saying all my information is wrong? (link)
Hello there,

There is something going on with certain users accounts. Some people, when they update their e-mail address, it is blank.

The best I can figure so far is that people are running McAffee's privacy guard, or something similar, that strips all e-mail addresses from forms you submit on the internet.

As for the password, that is another thing entirely.

Recently we have had a few people with VERY easy to guess passwords on their accounts, complain of the same thing that happened to you.

Send me an e-mail, from the account you want placed as the contact for your account, and I will hand enter it into the database so you can get back in.

Maybe you can help me figure out what might have happened to blank your e-mail completely.

Thank you,

DN.

Is there any way I can disconnect my ipod while it says "do not disconnect"? Because I have been charging it for like hours and it wasn't even very battery-drained when I hooked it up. I'm afraid to disconnect it! Someone please help this is URGENT!!! (link)
Pay NO attention to the answers below.

how long do theytake to charge (link)
From the apple iPod help site:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=62018#3

"Question: How long does it take to charge the battery?
Answer: Fully charging the battery takes about 4 hours. You can also fast-charge the battery to 80 percent capacity in 1 hour (2 hours for iPod (Click Wheel)). Charging the battery may take longer if you're using iPod as it charges."

You can probably find everything you EVER wanted to know about batteries for an iPod, any iPod, at this link here:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=62018

... and here is a free personal tip from me:

Let it charge FULLY before you use it the first time. The battery will appreciate it.

Have fun with your new iPod Nano!

Hi there,

I am NOT a doctor. Just on the off chance that this is it, the symptoms you list are very vague, which is how the pain from appendicitis sometimes starts.

Look:

http://www.medicinenet.com/appendicitis/page2.htm

... under symptoms, to see what it looks like to you.

The weird numbness thing, if it were me, would convince me to go to the doctor right away, just in case.

I hope you will take that advice.

Good luck,

Does anyone know how to make buttons in flash?
I've been tryingto find some one google, but they all don't work- it ends up erring.

How does someone know when they get closure (not feeling as if they have to keep posting and reposting their problems) concerning their problem(s)on a site like this
(link)
Hi there,

Speaking only for myself and the people I know personally, I can tell you from vast experience, that you don't "get" closure. You MAKE closure.

You have to be the one to stop the obsessive thoughts. If you can't do it alone, you need to seek help.

It is work, and don't let anyone kid you about that.

I can tell you that you are in the dozens of questions here... all the same more or less.

This is completely running your life for you, and that makes me sad for you. :-(

Obsessing about these things, which seem like a big deal in your mind, but are completely meaningless to anyone else, isn't healthy.

I am not saying they aren't important... I am saying they shouldn't be important, which means there is something than needs fixing to overcome this.

You have to ACHIEVE closure. It is something you have to DO... it doesn't just happen when so much of your life is wrapped up in such little things.

You are missing out on life. Picture this:

You are walking down a flowered trail, through a lush tropical paradise, next to a gorgeous waterfall... but you don't get to take in any of the beauty around you because you are reading a bubblegum wrapper over and over again, whilst keeping your head down to avoid any of the beauty around you.

You are concentrating on trivialities, while the wonders of life pass you by.

This is of course my opinion, but I hope you will see a counselor, and get your life back.

Take care,

DN.

Do you think the reason people only dwell on comments that were made to them because the comments made to them is on the topics they are sensitive about and not on the ones they are NOT sensitive about. (link)
If a person does what you describe, they need to see a professional counselor and be evaluated for any one of a number of problems.

Everybody does this to a small extent, but when it takes over your life, you have an obsession that needs to be handled professionally.

Please seek help.

DN.

This has nothing to do with being a woman or a man I just want to know the following: When you are having a conversation with another person do you nitpick (find fault) with every word or sentence they say or just take the whole conversation at face value. And what is your reason for nitpicking or taking the conversation at face value? (link)
Hi there,

Generally at face value.

Reason:

Over-analyzing things, looking for a way to take it wrong, or dwelling on things long forgotten by all other parties in the conversation are all signs of mental illness.

Paranoia is really a bad thing. It can consume your life, and create other problems.

For example, men who are overly paranoid can have a very hard time with any feeling of accomplishment at all. Makes it nearly impossible to hold a job, do well in school, etc...

Women who are overly paranoid, typically starve themselves to death because their mental state leaves them feeling like they can't trust anyone's opinion... even their own might not be right.

Sadly, the only opinion they should be questioning is their own, as their mind isn't working right.

Take care,

DN.

This is something that needs to be addressed by a professional counselor.

Why is it if someone who is thin looks unwell if they are drawn (tired, gaunt, haggard) but after they relax for a day or a week they look good again
(link)
Hello there,

If a person is very thin, their body literally eats itself just to stay alive.

A period of rest where they can lessen the strain on their body will allow it to recover a little.

They may look "good" to themselves, but probably not to others.

The real answer, if they are thin enough to look drawn or gaunt... is to increase the amount they eat and give their body what it needs to survive without killing itself.

Take care,

DN.

I just got banned for kidding around, mayonnays and i had a dispute and ketchup, her twin had this to say before banning me, by the way read the moderator board, im really pissed now i cant be a moderator... :(
_____________________________________________
Okay. First, this is Ketchup. No, you havn't heard of me but you have heard of my twin sister. Mayonnaise.

Anyways, I heard u called her a "gothic freak"
You're a fuckin douche. You need to fuckin get to know somebody before you go and fuckin judge. You don't know her. I'm her fuckin twin whatever you call her, you call me. You need to get some damn manners and grow up. Stop being a fuckin 5 year old pussy. Thats what you are. We're not gothic. And we sure as hell ain't freaks. You need to learn how to give good fuckin advice cause yours sucks ass.

Think before you start fuckin calling people names. Especially if you don't know them. That just goes to show you're a pussy.

Grow the fuck up..

Oh, and you can get me banned. I really don't give a shit. So yeah..what you got to say now?

________________________________________
Is there any way to become a mod again??? (link)
Hello there,

"...her twin had this to say before banning me..."

Her twin didn't ban you.

Both of the people in the mod forum who were behaving like children were banned for the same length of time.

What happens between you and someone else off of the site isn't something I can do anything about.

If she sent that as a 'question' here on the site, file an abuse report and she will be banned.

The short of this is that you started it, and you should be the one to apologize.

I know you think you were being funny, but you weren't funny to the person you were insulting.

If you knew this person in real life, and were 100% certain that you knew them well enough for something like this to be taken in good humor, it would have been fine.

What her twin wrote you was also completely out of line. You obviously hit a sore spot, and she completely flipped out on you. Regardless of the crass nature of her response, and the obvious attempts to vindictively hurt you in any way she could, you still started the thing.

I have done this before, long ago, and the solution is to own up to it and apologize.

As for being a mod... read the FAQ.

Ok..I'm a redhead 15/F and i really like this guy. Well he seemed to be diggen me or whatever soo one night i texted to see if he wanted to do something tom. He texted me back and said he is not attracted to redheads and that if i like him more than that than its not gonna work because he doesnt like me. I was heart broken. I mean red hair is kind of rare and i mean im not ugly at all..and i dont have the pale skin like one either. I look a little different but still i have red hair. My question is..in your opinion is red hair ugly and why dont guys like red hair? (link)
Hi there,

To put this bluntly... the guy is abnormal.

We all have particular things we like better than others, but redheads seem to be universally loved these days.

In fact, I personally only know one guy who doesn't think red is the most attractive color... and he doesn't like girls.

Don't let one guy give you a complex about this, when there are probably dozens swooning over you, but afraid to say anything. (Redheads have quite a reputation.)

Now let me point out something equally noteworthy: Someone rejecting you because of a physical trait is a sign that they are very shallow.

Getting together with someone ONLY because they favor your haircolor is self destructive.

Not getting together with someone ONLY because of their hair color... well, that is just shallow and pathetic.

That was the long version. Here is the short version:

"My question is..in your opinion is red hair ugly and why dont guys like red hair?"

In my opinion red hair, on the right person, is very beautiful, and the only guy I know that doesn't like redheads... also doesn't like women.

In other words: You don't have a problem... this guy does.

Good luck.

Okay, so I have a Nokia 6101 and I have no idea how to transfer the pictures in my phone to my computer. Also, I have no idea how to or where to get themes for my phone.....

Please help me figure things out because I'm not a born techie!!!!!

Thanks in advance! (link)
Hi there,

Here is a link to the place to download the software you need for your phone to computer hookup:

http://www.nokia.com/pcsuite

... and here is the FAQ for that:

http://www.nokia.com/pcsuite/faq

... which should help you get everything taken care of.

Here is the user's guide (manual) for the Nokia 6101:

http://www.nokia.co.in/nokia/0,8764,82801,00.html

... which will walk you through the hook-up.

I found this in the FAQ for another similar model:

"Install the PC suite provided in the CD Rom of the sales package. Connect the phone via data cable/Infrared/ Bluetooth. The phone will be detected. You can use "Image Store" option in pc suite and transfer your images to PC."

Here is the product page for the Nokia 6101 phone:

http://www.nokia.com.ph/nokia/0,,97161.html

... which has a flash TUTORIAL for doing just about everything with your phone, except transferring pictures.

It does show you how to connect the phone to your computer, however, which is half the battle. :-)

I hope you enjoy your new phone, and if you do the tutorial thing for your Nokia SmartPhone, you will really master all of the nice features it has.

Good luck,

DN.

Hi there,

I am NOT a doctor, but from my own experience I can tell you that you need to see one ASAP.

If it is a pinched nerve, continued activity with that nerve pinched can leave you crippled for life. :-(

If blood clots run in your family, that is something else to consider, especially if you are taking birth control pills.

It could be a wide variety of things, but no matter what it is, you will have to see a doctor to find out.

Good luck,

DN.

Other than Siberius, what music notation/composition software do you recommend? I'm in the market for something easy to use that works well. Links to free trials would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, and yes, I have googled. I'm asking for personal experience, not just a lundry list of names.

:) (link)
Hi there,

I would recommend Cakewalk, and their products.

www.cakewalk.com

... Having not used it in years, it was then, and is now the industry standard.

My first experience with it was in 1983 or 1984, and they are still at the top of the game today, so I suppose that should mean something.

You said no lists of program names, which is a shame, as I have a mighty list of free music notation and composition programs you might like to try.

You never know when the next up and comer will challenge cakewalk. :-)

If you change your mind, and would like me to supply them, mention it in your feedback and I will add them into my answer.

Have fun,

DN.

in the basic iPod nano package it includes the headphones and the dock adapter which is the charger right? cause ive tried googling it and it doesnt say if the dock adapter is the charger. thanksss. (link)
Hi there,

The iPod Nano charges through the computer's USB port. If you have the dock(cradle) attached to an appropriate USB port, then it will charge while in the dock(cradle.)

By appropriate USB port, I mean to say one with enough current to allow charging.

You want to use a USB port directly on the computer, rather than an extension port (hub) on a monitor, or keyboard as these are low power USB ports and will not have the Ooomph! to get the job done.

If you have a USB hub, and it has a power pack (wall wart, power supply, etc) then it is OK to charge off ports from there, as it has that extra power to get the job done.

Here is a reference from the Apple help site about how to charge and sync iPods, including the Nano:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61127

... Enjoy your new iPod, and don't forget to fully charge it before the first use.

I just downloaded cain the bruteforcing software and i was wondering if someone else knew how to use it. I really need help on something thanks... (link)
Enough questions about attacking websites... seriously.

My best friend is a 16 year old guy. Honestly, he's not like most guys, not into sports except skateboarding. I've run out of ideas for his Christmas gift. I decided on a fish from petco with the tank and everything (small). Do you think he'll like it at all? (link)
Hi there,

This is a really hard one. If you know he is really into fish, and has always wanted the exact kind you want to get him, then an aquarium and an exotic fish may be just the thing.

In any other circumstance, he may really resent you for it.

Why?

Fish are serious work. In order to maintain a proper pH balance, temperature, etc... requires a person to basically send themselves to "fish school" or risk dead fish.

If the fish die, he won't want to tell you, which may result in him not wanting to be around you so as to avoid you asking: "So, how are the fish?"

Somebody gave me a fish once. Worst present ever... period.

I know it seems like a cute idea, but it doesn't work out unless the person receiving the fish as a gift, REALLY likes fish.

If he is a hard-core skateboarder, a gift certificate, or something you THINK he really needs, from the local skate shop, would be a better choice. If you do get him something, be prepared to hand over the receipt so he can exchange it if it isn't what he needs.

Asking his parents what he has been on about all year is another good choice. They would probably like it if someone else bought one of the things they were going to buy him, so that they don't have to.

No matter what you do, this time next year you will be really glad you didn't buy him another job, err, cute little fishie. ;-)

Good luck,

DN.

should i trust the edifi program
my parents are paying for it
-is it really neccessary?
-my parents dont have any money so i would like them to waste money on something i dont even need right now (link)
Hi there,

What a good question!

It seems like there is a great deal of debate on this. Most of it seems to revolve around people misunderstanding what EDIFI does. They fill out forms for you, primarily, and help you understand things if it is your first time doing college paperwork.

In theory, this is NOTHING you can't do yourself, or with the help of a school guidance counselor.

The BBB (Better Business Bureau) has a questionable rating on them:

http://www.spokane.bbb.org/alerts/alerts.html?newsid=445&newstype=1

Here is a thread with comments which purport to be from EDIFI staff, among others:

http://edumacation.com/EdifiCollegeFinancialAidServicesCompanyStatement

Here is an undercover news story out of Denver Colorado:

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/1437292/detail.html

... in which they are called "College Financial Aid Services," but appear to be the same group as EDIFI.

There are a LOT of interesting links at the bottom of this news story. Studying those will probably fix you right up.

Another news story:

http://edumacation.com/EdifiCollegeFinancialAidServicesWrcb

Here is one from the Wall Street Journal, entitled: "Use Caution With
Scholarship Services:"

http://www.collegejournal.com/aidadmissions/financialissues/20040227-chaker.html

... which will clear things right up.

And another:

"Companies Offer Help With Financial Aid, but Beware of Overblown Claims:"

http://www.wsjclassroomedition.com/archive/04may/ymny_financialaid.htm

... And yet another:

"Services claim to cut college costs
Government cautions against paying for help:"

http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/02-04/02-29-04/d04bu201.htm

... all and all, I wouldn't do the EDIFI program after reading all this.

Most colleges have a financial aid officer, and staff, who's job it is to HELP YOU. They don't charge anything, and it is what they do for a living.

You know they are motivated, because if they can't get you financial aid, they lose a student, which means they lose money.

This whole thing smells bad, and if it were me, I think the money you would spend on this would be better spent on school.

If your parents have any doubts, show them the news stories I sent you to, and they can see for themselves that many people, including college professors, college counselors, the Wall Street Journal and the U.S. Government all seem to agree that services such as EDIFI are less than honest. Some sources come right out and call them a total scam and a rip-off.

Good luck,

DN.
