about

Hey Everyone :) I'm Kate and a level 2 mod on here. I've had this account since July 2004, so I've been on here since I was 13! Wow ... crazy for me to think how long ago that was. I will admit I don't check in as often as I once did, but being away at college, being in a sorority, and having a job when I'm not at school is very time consuming. I still try to help out as much as possible, and if you send me a question I WILL answer it. This site helped me a LOT when I was in high school and had a lot of questions, and I'm here to help anyone who needs it :) Feel free to write in my forum or send me a question any time!

(sorry i'm not sure if this is in the right subject but it seems about right) hi, i am 13 years old, i weigh 108 pounds and i am 5'8. about 4 months ago i weighed 153 pounds. everyday i force myself not to eat to a point where the hunger hurts so bad that i end up cutting my wrist just so i forget about the hunger pain. and whenever i do eat, its hardly anything and if i eat over about 400 calories or if i feel like i've eaten way too much i force myself to throw up (and i know that only bulimic people do that, but i dont binge like they do, only when i feel like i have eaten alot, and alot for me is like a pb & j sandwich). I really want to stop for me, and my friends all think that i am going to kill myself, i am so pale and weak and i really want to stop, but just the thought of eating and food makes me want to throw up. someone please please help me, i want to stop but i dont know how!

This is coming from a recovered anorexic.

I know you're scared. I know you're confused. I know you don't really know why you feel the way you do or how to stop.

Don't you think your parents have noticed your significant weight loss? Don't you think they know that you're frail and pale, and that they've noticed all of the physical and emotional changes?

It took my parents a little while to catch on when I first started, but once they did it was really helpful.

If you really think you're doing a good job hiding everything from your parents, think again.

If I really am wrong and they are completely oblivious, well.. fine, don't tell them. I don't care who you tell, but you really need to tell somebody.

Starving yourself and/or throwing up is VERY bad. Cutting yourself is awful. I've done that. I still have the scars on my arms and it's been years.. not many, but a few years have gone by and while not many people can see my scars, I know they're there and can see them.

Please tell a friend, a teacher, a guidance councilor, an aunt, uncle, sister, brother, cousin, etc. Tell someone. If you have to, write them a note. Sometimes it can be easier to get all of your thoughts and feelings out on paper because you can say what you need to say without being interrupted or without tears stopping your words from coming out.

Trust me, it's a very difficult process to go through. Knowing that you have a problem, understanding that you need to fix it, trying to find a way to fix it, and just going through that entire recovery process. I was diagnosed as anorexic in the 4th grade. That diagnosis didn't leave me until the 8th. I went 4 years being terrified of what would happen next. They said I was fully recovered when I was in 8th grade. What nobody knows is that I still have the thoughts I've always had. I still wonder how eating 2000 calories a day can be good for me. Sometimes I think I'm more self conscious now then I was back then,,, but who knows... I guess I'm better now because I don't act on it.

I'm in college now and I still talk to psychiatrists about what I went through - we have a free campus counseling center and I talk to them about how I feel and they try helping me. It's nice to have support - it lets you know that you have people backing you up and who want to see you get better and be successful.

The thoughts may not ever leave - I really don't know.

Recovery is very challenging. Or at least it was for me. I'm not going to lie to you. I am so scared to go back to where I was that I overcompensate.

But really, you can't recover on your own. Well... you could, but it's not a chance I recommend you taking.

Like I said before, I don't care if you tell your parents, but do you really think they don't notice?

And seriously, just tell somebody. It's the only way anything is going to happen. You need the support system to help you out and check on your progress, make sure you're doing okay emotionally as well as physically.

So I'm just going to leave you with this.

Tell someone.

Hey, im a 15 year old girl, and i made a mistake. I have been dating my boyfriend for 2 years. I finally agreed to have sex with him. I got my period august 19th, and stopped bleeding on the 26th. On the 27th, i had sex with him. We used a condom, and i dont think it broke, but it is possible, and i know its really early, but ive felt weird. I have been tired a lot, my boobs are sore, and ive felt nauseous for all of today and yesterday.I have been a vegetarian for 5 years, and suddenly, for the first time im craving meat, and also fatty foods. I am irritable, and i feel like im pmsing, but its impossible because i just finished my period like 10 days ago...Is it possible i could be pregnant? When can i take a pregnancy test? I live in New York, and if i am pregnant, would it be possible to get an abortion without my parents ever knowing? Thank you so much.

I've been freaking out about the same thing, and I'm 18.

I finally manned up and took a test today, and I'm pretty lucky because I'm not pregnant.

I had a lot of the symptoms you're describing - except I also missed my period (Which REALLY freaked me out). And really, I didn't even miss it; it was late and when I finally got it, it was just a little bit of spotting.

I freaked myself out into thinking I was pregnant. I felt nausea, craving certain foods, etc, etc. I feel like I had a few of the major symptoms because I scared myself into thinking I was pregnant.

You used a condom and don't believe it broke - well that's good. Try to keep your hopes up (stress and freaking out will do nothing but delay your period and freak you out more).

Wait to see if you miss your period this month. If so, buy a 3-pack test. Take one when you realize you've missed your period. If it comes out negative, relax. If you're still worried, wait about 10 days and take a second test. Still negative? Save the final test for the following period - if you have it, GREAT! If not, take it again. Still negative? Still missing your period? Then go ahead and go to the doctor. Tell your parents you're not feeling well, but when they take you to the doctor, ask if you can go in by yourself.

I'm from NY, and I understand the laws you're worried about. However, I moved to NC when I was a kid, so I also know our laws. I'm not sure about abortion laws in NY, but where I live now, you only have to be 16 to go in without a parent/guardian (although they strongly recommend one).

When you go to the doctor, they are lawfully required to keep everything confidential, even from your parents - doesn't matter how old you are. If you tell your doctor that you don't want your parents to know you're sexually active or that you're there because you think you may be pregnant, your doctor CAN NOT tell your parents.

If you want to go on birth control, you can tell your mom that your periods are extremely bad, horrible cramps, etc. Tell your doctor that you really want it for protection. Your doctor can't tell your parents. In fact, you could probably get your doctor in trouble if they were to tell your parents without your permission.

I went to get a physical when I was still underage. My mom even came in the room with me. Before the doctor would ask me if I was sexually active, she told my mom to leave the room. My mother wasn't happy about it, but the doctor respected my rights to confidentiality.

Good luck, and I hope everything works out for you.

is it technically african asia europe or a little bit of all three? What is the Official oppinion?

I never really thought about this, but it's a good question.

My assumption was always Europe or Asia, but here's what Wiki says about it..

I've been at school for a week now and I'm really feeling like I didn't make the right choice. I moved 5 hours away to go to this school and my parents are paying a ton of money which is making me feel horrible about even considering this but I really don't feel like I'm in the right place and now that I've started classes I don't feel like I'm in the right major either. I'm an architecture major and I just feel like it's way too much responsibility for me to handle. I will still always love architecture but I'm not sure if I want it to be my career. I really think I'm going to change my major and go to a different school but I need some help coming up with something to do with my life.

-I like small kids but don't know if I would want to go into elementary education although from the time that I was 6-12 thats what I wanted to do.
-I love all aspects of art but I don't want to be a starving artist and I don't think I have the skills to compare with other people majoring in art.
-I don't want to do anything in the medical field
-I think being a real estate agent would be fun but the income isn't really dependable because of the fluctuating housing market.
-Before architecture I was going to major in interior design but I think only big cities have a demand for that type of career and I hate cities, correct me if I'm wrong.

I need some help!
I don't want to be undeclared, and pay money at a school while I decide what to do but I'm not sure if my mom would just let me take a semester or a year off while I decide.

As for your problem with right now - take your core classes this year (math, science, english, history) that way you haven't wasted this year.

About a future major..

What not try for art education. It's with young kids if you apply to elementary schools, but you'll get to teach them something you really love - art :]. And you could do it at junior high or high school levels as well.

So I'm about to start college, in ten days to be exact, and I'm incredibly nervous. It isn't the social aspects that I'm nervous about though. I have no idea what to expect for actual school. What do I take notes with? Paper? Laptop? How should I organize my notes? Binders? Spirals? What should I typically take to class?

What should my study habits be like, etc etc. Should I carry a backpack?

I'm stressing myself out about stuff that people usually aren't stressing about. HELP!

I'm a college sophomore, so I can say that I went through all that anxiety last year, and I'm pretty sure that I know what you're feeling right now.

Supply-wise, I did the same for college that I did in high school.

I kept spiral notebooks (with pocket dividers) for each class. I took notes with a pen (easier to read and doesn't fade in time) on college ruled paper (more lines per page). I also used different colored pens for different major topics... I'm just weirdly organized like that...

I also date all of my notes. I write the date at the top of the paper so I know when I took the notes (it helps if I miss a day of class or if there's a test on everything covered from one section to another (it also helps if your final exam is cumulative).

I carry a backpack - most people do. It's a lot more convenient to have one, I think.

As for a laptop - don't bring it on your first day. Your professor will usually let you know their opinion on laptops, tape recorders, etc. If they don't mention it, don't be afraid to raise your hand and ask.

90% of professors will kick you out of class if you're on your cell phone... it's rude and they have every right to tell you to leave or to grade you low because you're a pain in the butt.

I had one professor who, if your phone rang, would take it and talk to whoever called (if it was a text, he would send them a message back). In turn, though, his phone once went off in class and he put it on speaker and held it to the mic so we could hear the conversation.

Well, obviously I didn't cover everything here, but I tried to address your questions. In my opinion, college classes were a lot like high school (a little more work, but you catch my drift). I suggest showing up about 5 minutes early the first day. There are no assigned seats (however most people are creatures of habit and will stick to the seat they grabbed the first day).

Any other questions? Feel free to shoot me a message to my inbox. I love college and I'm sure you'll do excellent. Congrats on getting accepted and having goals for your like, unlike most people in our generation :].

i was looking into a school out of state and then i realized it was a community college. if i dont live in the state, does that mean i cant attend a community school?

How would you attend the school if it were out of state? Community colleges don't have dorms, so you'd have to move to the state of the CC, at least for the 9months in which you're in attendance...

So, technically, yes you can go there, but in the end you'll have basically moved there anyway.

i've done research and i know its legal for me to work as long as i have a permit. but i can't find any places in apple valley, ca that will hire a fourteen yearold with no prior experience.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_jobs_can_a_14-year-old_get

Most likely, it's not very legal for a 14 year old to work for money unless it's in the entertainment business or if you're working for your parents or other family members.

Check out all the options that link gave you, though... some might help out.

i am interested in becoming a Property Administrator but I am not sure what to take in college and where the best place it to apply to after I finish school. Is it better to apply to real estate agencies or insurance broker offices? Do i need a diploma or can I just take some courses? Please tell me all you know. Thanks

I saw this question has been up for a few days now, so even though I know nothing about property administrators, I thought I could still give you some suggestions.

I'm not sure if you're still in high school or if you've already started college. So, if you're still in high school, why don't you stop by your local community college and speak with them about what you want to do and ask them what path they suggest you follow.

And whether you're in high school or college, set up an appointment with your counselor - that's what they're there for - to help you decide where to go, which classes you have to take (if any), etc.

There are probably very few people on this site who know much about this. In fact, I'd guess that majority of our users are young teens (as we can see by most of the questions here), so they may not know as much about future careers and the like. You're better off asking someone who you can sit down and talk with. So call up your local Comm. College and ask to speak with someone or set up an appointment with someone who can help you with these questions. And if you're already enrolled in a school, just make an appointment with whomever your counselor is.

Good luck and sorry that I can't be of much more assistance.

Yesterday I went to the dentist and he removed the nerve of my tooth. Now when I try to eat on it, my tooth hurts. I have to eat slowly on one side. It only hurts when I eat and chew on it.

Do I have pain beacuse of the irritation of the nerve removal or what? Should I wait for some days and than I'll call my dentist?

Is there anyone who did tooth nerve removal? Can you help me pls?

Are you talking about a root canal?

I've had one before, and that area of my mouth was sore for a few days because they have to kinda cut into you to get it...

My dentist prescribed me pain medicine... some kind of tylenol with codein that did a fantastic job of taking away the pain.. and putting me to sleep.

If you want to be on the safe side, call up your dentist and ask them if you're supposed to be sore. They'll give you a time frame of how long the tenderness or sensitivity should last. After a few days, if it's not even going away a little, I suggest making an appointment to make sure it's not infected or something didn't go wrong.

Chances are that you're fine and it's just sore and tender from the procedure. If it's not constantly hurting, and only hurting during eating/chewing/motion, then that's more than likely just tenderness from the removal.

Hi there
just wondering, what are REALISTICALLY my chances of still having a regular period, and being pregnant. My periods havent been late, and its not just spotting. However i do have wuite light periods since im on the pill. Please help me, i hear all these stories of women being pregnant and not knowing it.

My friend thought she might be pregnant and scheduled a doctors appointment, but she was relieved when she received her period. She called the doctor to cancel when the nurse said she should still come in because you can get a period the first little while.

Now, if it's been 6 months and you're still getting a period, then I doubt your pregnant.

But why don't you just pick up a test and find out yourself. After 2-3 negative tests taken about a week apart, I'd be pretty sure that you're not pregnant. And if you're really still nervous, take a trip to the doctor (can't afford it - go to the free clinic at your local hospital).

If you're young and are afraid of getting caught with a store pregnancy test, know that it's easy to hide. Go to the grocery store with your parents, bring a big purse, and tell your parent you saw a friend and want to go chat for a minute, while picking up the test, buying it, and hiding it in your purse.

If you're driving age but still in high school and under your parents insurance, tell your parent you aren't feeling well, go to the doctor, and ask to go in the room by yourself, that way you can tell your doctor the real reason why you're there and they can give you the test. Doctor/Patient confidentiality makes it illegal for them to tell your parents that you needed a pregnancy test.

Sorry for all these excessive details, but I wanted to cover the bases on how you can just take some sort of test and find out rather than worrying yourself sick.

Realistically, your chances are slim of having a regular period and being pregnant, but you should just calm your nerves and take a test.

How long do you usually have to wait once your orthodontist makes an appointment to get them off. Im wondering because i have an apoinment in 2 days and he should be taking them off soon, but how long do you usually have to wait between the appointment to where they schedule you getting them off, and the appointment to when you do get them off???

Thank you!!!!

It really just depends. I went to the Ortho one day and they told me I was about ready to have mine taken off. About a month or two later, they were off.

That's just me, though. When you go in 2 days, ask them approximately how long you have left. If you're lucky, they may be off before the school year starts up (if you're still in school, that is).

Okay so obviously jobs are really hard to find now a days , well me ? I finally got a job . And my manager loves me already , but I kinda screwed up sunday I woke up feeling like crap , like REAL crap and it was my first meeting and third day of work. Nd I missed both , and I didn't call . I want to call I don't know what to say . I didn't call cause I was scared to call in , since it was my third day. But now I feel stupid cause I actually like that job . Whaat should I do ?

Call ASAP. Where I work, they have a no show/no call rule where if you miss work and don't call in, you're automatically fired.

If you haven't already called by now, I suggest doing it - quick! Speak to whoever your manager is, and let them know that you've been really sick and weren't able to get to the phone, and that once you had the chance to call, you got really nervous and scared that you may be fired, so you kept putting off the call , etc. Just explain yourself calmly, and if your manager has to take action, don't get mad, yell, etc... that just makes things worse. Calmly explain what happened, and hope for the best.

But you better hurry and make that call... just showing up tomorrow or whatever is no guarantee that you'll still have your job.

so I just asked the question "siblings bringing up ex bf" and my sister (who has an account on advicenators) answered my question, acting like a victim in a "different situation." I rated her a three (which means decent enough advice) because I thought it was horrible how she was lying. she saw I rated her a three and told me she knew the question was from me, and that she was going to file an abuse report, so she did, saying that she didnt know it was my question, and that I was purposely lowering her rating. help?

I'm a site administrator and am going to discuss this with the other site admins.

When we come to a conclusion on whether or not we're going to take any action, you will find out.

So I was reading a question here about IP addresses and I started to wonder what one was, and then I looked up IP address and a website told me mine, and I tracked it all the way to my house!

My question is, how can people find MY IP address, and if they can, can't they find out where you live?

I just searched my IP address and it told me where my laptop was registered, which happens to be the college I attend...

I think it's a little creepy how I could search my own IP address and find that out.

Although, as Theymos stated in his answer to the other IP address question you're probably referring to, I was only able to find my own IP address and the address of those on this site because I am a site administrator. There are only a handful of us who have that ability, and we only use it for the purpose of banning users who misuse the site - we are able to ban IP addresses of those who really, really troll the site so they can't create a second account... and only the owner of the website has that ability.

Knowing IP addresses us allows us to see if a user here has more than one account from the same computer, so it helps us see if people are breaking rules, etc.

By searching my own IP address on this website: http://ip-address-lookup-v4.com/lookup.php?ip=

I was able to find out the city I live in (well, the city I registered my laptop in) and that my laptop was registered at a college (that I happen to attend).

I was hoping that it would bring up the city I actually live in (since I attend college a few hours from my home) so I could see if it would bring up my actual address... that way I could have helped you more.

Anyway, as far as I know, people can only find out your IP address if they own or administrate the site you're apart of -- so always be careful of sites you're on.

I don't know exactly what it takes to find someone elses IP address, but they can find your general location from it.

Yesterday, I was on AIM, and got a random IM. The guy stated his name, and started talking randomly. He mentioned the state I was in, which again I don't know this person. It started to freak me out, so I signed out.

This might be someone I know just messing around, but somehow I doubt it.

Now, online, I have a Facebook/MySpace and a general e-mail for both. And then I have a plethora of other e-mail that I use for play, signing up for forum boards and such, and none of my Instant Messenger services are hooked to the Facebook/Myspace anymore.

I recently learned about IP addresses, and again, was getting a little freaked. Now then, my question.

Can someone find your exact location with an IP easily? (I know its possible, the whole thing with police tracing e-mails blah). I doubt that, if it was fairly difficult, anyone would go and find someone they haven't even spoken to, but if it was easy.

I really am being paranoid, really paranoid, but I am also curious. Not even IP even, but computer tracking in general? And if it is, is there anything I can do to make it more difficult?

Sorry for bothering everyong with my paranoia, but I just don't want to be on another list.

I don't mean to creep you out, but if you live in Chicago, then I was able to find out your exact latitude and longitude just by googling your IP address...

That's all the information I have on this, though.
I don't know anything about computer tracking, so I couldn't tell you how to make it any safer.

This would be the perfect question for Theymos or DangerNerd because they're both computer whizzes.

Sorry that I couldn't give you much more information than that... but if you do live in Chicago, then finding your location was pretty easy for someone as computer-stupid as I am. :/

Always be cautious of websites you use and information you give out - don't ever get too personal with people you don't know, no matter how comfortable you feel talking to them!

Any tips on surviving co-ed college bathrooms?

18/F

However, I will be in a dorm for upperclassmen since I'm a Junior. Thanks!

I lived on a co-ed floor, but we still had separate bathrooms...

Anyway, the bathrooms are actually really clean (except weekends) because a cleaning lady/person comes once a day (ours usually came around 10or11) to clean them.

Our biggest issue was girls shedding in the showers and not picking up their hair - GROSS! We talked to our RA about it and had a floor meeting, and the problem wasn't as bad, but most of us would wait until after our cleaning lady came before we'd shower.

It's really not that bad. The guys are a lot cleaner than the girls because they don't have makeup in the sink, hair in the showers, etc.

We had one coed bathroom on the floor,, but it was a one toilet one shower type of thing - you know, for one person to use at a time, and it was always super clean.

I suggest flipflops and that's really all you need.

And you're 18 and going to be a college junior? That's pretty cool. I'm 18 and will be a sophomore in August and thought that was crazy.

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck would chuck wood?

People keep saying this all around me, and I don't get it.

Some people say it like this:

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck would chuck wood?

Some people say it like this:

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

is there more to thsi or something? Is it from some movie about woodchucks or something? Why do people say "How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"

Help! I feel STUPID because I don't understand!

It's just a tongue twister - something you try to see if you can say really fast...

Hi I really think I have a problem. I dont like eating..... I think it's because I'm afraid of gaining weight. Sometimes I force myself not to eat but my mom makes me eat. I mean i dont want to be anorexic or anything but I just want to eat less. I have like no portion control what so ever. It sucks!
Please give me some advice? :)

This may be a bigger problem than you think. I suffered from what the doctors diagnosed as Anorexia, and I got that diagnosis when I was in the 5th grade - 10 years old.

Being afraid to gain weight is a problem. If you just don't want to be fat, well then you're an average teenager.

If you're so scared of gaining weight that you exercise constantly, skip meals, lie about having already eaten, weigh yourself constantly, look in the mirror every chance you get, etc... then you really need to talk to someone & get help.

Anorexia is very dangerous. It kills. It is a murderous disease to have. Anyone can be anorexic - girls, boys, adults, children, teens, etc. Sure, it's mostly teenage - twenty-ish girls, but ANYONE can have it.

Talk to a counselor, your regular physician, etc. Someone will be able to lead you to find out whether it's a serious problem or just some teenage angst.

If you have any questions about ED's, especially Anorexia, let me know. It took me two years before I was considered healthy/recovered, but that's just from when my parents realized what was happening. I went to various psychiatrists - some who terrified me and should have never chosen a profession with children, and one psychiatrist who I wanted to get better just to make her happy...

I've been through tons of ups and downs with my ED, so seriously, let me know if you have any questions about it.
