about

I am 48 years old (yes that's old compared to some of you).

I have worked in nursing and/or healthcare management positions for 24 years. Primarily OB, Neonatal, Mental Health, Occupational Health and Geriatrics. In Jan 2008 I started my own business to board horses and do equine/human education. I am also a certified dog trainer.

I've been around the block so to speak and seem to be always helping others. I've been told that the reason people seek me out for advice is that I am approachable and caring. But on the same token even though I consider the person's feelings. I tell it like I see it. I've dealt with people in trouble with the law, dysfunctional families such as those with abuse & marriage problems. Not to mention problems with employees and employers.

I don't ever claim to know it all, and always keep an open mind.

Okay...
My friend had sex last wednesday and when she was done she went home and couldn't sleep. She felt sick, looked horrible, and even started bleeding (she didn't tell me when, though) so we skipped school on thursday to talk and see what was up. She tried to eat and she threw up. She's still bleeding, feeling sick, and everything she eats she throws back up again. Any idea of what's wrong?

Thanks streetcarp, I appreciate the positive comment :-)

If the bleeding is heavier or longer than a normal period she should get checked by a Dr. If in fact it is not her period, she could have sustained some kind of trauma that is causing the bleeding. Unless of course there is an emotional aspect involved here that could certainly bother her so much that she has the symptoms you described. However, either way the first priority is to be examined by a Dr to rule out physical trauma, and then go from there. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Thanks, and best wishes to your friend.

hi nallie. i sent you a message on friday about the problem with the forgotten pills, and the on and off bleeding, thankyou for the help, but i have a few more questions, i spoke to a chemist and she told me to skip the red pills and go straight onto the brown pills of the new packet to boost my hormone levels back up, is this the right thing to do? im still bleeding even though i went a whole day yesterday without bleeding but it came back this morning, my real period is due tomorrow how will not taking the red ones affect my period? or should this bleeding be counted as my period? if so will the bleeding stop after my real period is due to stop(due to stop on friday the 19th) im so confused
thanks

Yes, the Chemist is right..you can do that too, especially since it has been so long and you are still bleeding. Yes, in this case you would count the spotting as your period. I would say it should take 3-4 days or even up to a week for the spotting to stop.

Esentially the red pills are what I call placebos, they contain no hormones, and that is why once you stop the brown pills your period starts. It's bascially the same effect when you forgot the brown pills for several days.

If you are healthy and do not have a history of reproductive problems and have annual check ups, you shouldn't worry. Your cycle will straighten out soon. If the bleeding is heavier than normal you may want to consult a physician to make sure you are not anemic..but other than that, what you have told me will not cause any real long term complications. The only side effect of course would be that an unplanned pregnancy could occur until you are back on the pill for an entire month. So in the mean time use another form of birth control. Best wishes and good health!

guys you gotta help me here!
My brother had always been a very popular, very colourful, very fun outspoken person..
But yesterday, he came home..and went straight to bed (if you knew my brother you'd know there's definitely something wrong!) So I went in to his room, and he was asleep, and you could see that his pillow was wet from crying. But i decided he needed to go through it on his own. It would go over. But today he came home and did the same exact thing, so I went in to his room, and asked him about it (and he know's he can trust me, we usually tell eachother everything!) (by the way, I'm 15/f he's 13/m) and he just said "nothing, I'm tired" bt I wouldn't let go, and kept asking, telling him whatever it is, I'm here for him, I love him, he can trust me..and so on, and he just started crying, but wouldn't tell me, so I stayed for an hour in his room, next to him, and he wouldn't stop crying! He just started crying more and more, until he lost his breath. I'M SO WORRIED!! We both jst ended up sitting there crying..and I don't klnow what it could be, he usually tells me about his friend-problems, gf-problems, and I already know about all the family problems (trust me, our family is the family from HELL) but idk, what could it be? Why do you think he suddenly won't tell me what's going on with his life? What can I do to help him? Or to get him to open up?

Please help me, thank you!

Well, your brother is at a very fragile age for guys...the beginning of puberty. Since I have a 12 year old, my guess would be that someone is bullying him at school. Guys get to that age where they won't tell because then the bully will retalitate. It's a tough situation! He's lucky to have such a caring sister like you. The more you ask the less likely he is to tell. I think it would be best to spend some quality time with him doing something that he wants to do, like a movie or the mall or even going to the park. Tell him he is free to talk about whatever is bothering him at anytime. Once he has a chance to think about it, I bet he will open up to you.

How do I know if what my parents are doing to me is child abuse? They hit me really bad, but it never leaves a mark. They do throw stuff at me and yell and scream and hit me. They verbally abuse me and say God didn't know what he was thinking when he put me on this earth, and they tell me I'm never going to have a job, a husband, children, or friends and they say I'm going to go to jail. They say they love my sister more then me. They say it to my face. What would you recommend doing? Calling child abuse or reporting it. Is what they do to me considered child abuse?

If this is all true, then yes this is child abuse. You most likely will be placed with foster parents, and possibly your sister too, and they can be criminally prosecuted. If you don't want to call the child abuse hot line, call the police.

ok so i thought i just had a cold but today i woke up and i could barely talk!! it hasn't gotten any better because i dont know what to do to make it get better...does anyone have any good idea? by the way i can't go to the doctor until sunday so i need ideas that can get me through the weekend! thanks!

If you had symptoms of a cold, that same viral infection could have affected your vocal cords.

See this link for self care at home to get you by until Sunday. If your symptoms get worse, you should go to the Dr right away.

hi' im a 31 year old mum of 2,i have been on the pill for about 8 years and 12 days ago i missed 3 yellow pills in a row, i have been spot bleeding on and off now for a week, is this bleeding normal? and how long will this bleeding last for? im feeling a little worried, i cant get a doctors appointment until next week, so any help would be great.
thanks

Hi,
This would be expected as the hormone level decreased. If you don't get a normal period at the end of your pill cycle, then you may want to take a pregnancy test before starting the next packet. The spotting could last off and on until you have built up the hormone level again. Usually about a week after your period.

i live in a racist family. i am not racist though. i have some black, asian, and indian friends also. they dont make comments in public, but in the privacy of our home. it truely bothers me when they say something mean and we've had arguements about this many times. my parents think its ok to talk trash about people if they're not there to hear it. i hate them for that. whenever i talk about my friends they joke around and tell me that if they come over they'll steal something of ours. i just want them to knock it off. if i try talking about it, they'll laugh at me like im kidding. they even tease me about having friends like that. one time i went out with a really nice asian guy and my brother kept going on and on. its so annoying. how can i tell them that its not fair to treat people this way?

You are certainly in the right to feel the way you do. Even if they are "joking" it's still racism--just the same as if they are serious. If your family were to say the things that do in the workplace, they would most likely be disciplined or terminated, and could be the center of legal action. Racism is sometimes learned from parents, but almost always it is because the person stereotypes others. I consider it a form of ignorance..because they really haven't a clue!

You can become active in helping your family to change by staying positive about your friends. Encourage communication between your friends and your family..so they can get to know them better, and really see that they are good people.

hypoglycemia and asthma, does anyone have both? how do you know if your dizzy from your peak flow being low or sugar? which do you handle first if your experiencing both at once?
a friend of mind has both information on both seperate and together would be great

You would have to test both at the time of the dizzy spell. You can buy a peak flow meter, and a blood glucose machine. Or, if the person is dizzy and uses an albuterol inhaler and the dizzyness goes away..then you can assume it was from diminished lung function. If it doesn't go away, and they eat something sweet--then it goes away--that would be blood sugar. If they are experiencing both, they should do both things.

whats the difference between a gurls cum and between discharge? like i know that discharge just happens naturally and cum comes from sexual activity..but is it the same stuff? thanks!

Yes, basically it is the same stuff, your body produces it naturally from the same mucous membranes.

so you know how on some water bottles have the nutrition facts on that back?(like the poland spring one) well it says the servicing size per container is 2.5 ..i heard that you have to drink 8 bottles of water so do i have to drink 8 servings of that water bottle in order to be healthy? thanks

We should get 8, 8 ounce servings of water daily. More if you are exercising or out in hot weather.
So you need 64 ounces of water each day. Roughly you'd have to drink a little less than four bottles each day to get your daily requirement.

Can you get sunburnt on your scalp, i.e. through your hair? (mine's quite thick and long). I've been in the sun all day and now my scalp is itching. What can i do to soothe it? (I can't really put aftersun cream in my hair??!!)

Don't put ice directly on sunburned skin. Yes, you can get sunburned through your hair. Buy a product like solarcaine (the caine is the pain relief medication) so another brand will do, just ask the pharmacist. Put it on at night, and wash it out in the morning using cool water and shampoo. If you are planning on being in the sun before this is healed wear a hat.

I accidently stabbed myself on my left hand, and I think i got a vein. It's extremely painful, and is now a lump and looking a bit blueish. Is this serious, or just one of those things? What can I do to reduce the swelling?

Thanks.

It would be important to know how long ago this happened. However, from what you are telling me you most likely have what is called a hematoma. This is caused by bleeding under the skin, which basically is a broken or punctured blood vessel and the blood accumulates under the surface of the skin. This happens very frequently in a puncture wound that does not bleed on the outside much. It's similar to a bruise and may or may not be serious, usually it's not. You should see a Dr if any of these are present:
1. You cannot move your hand/fingers completely
2. The swelling seems to be getting worse
3. The pain increases and doesn't improve with rest or pallative treatment.
4. You have redness, warmth, increasing tenderness or foul drainage at the site of the wound, or a fever (this would indicate infection)
5. You have a slow clotting factor due to a disorder, or are taking aspirin, or coumadin.
6. You are in need of a tetanus shot (every 5 years for puncture wounds)

For treatment
Initially elevate your hand above your heart and apply a cold pack wrapped in a towel.
After 24 hours use a warm moist pack 3-4 times a day for 20 minutes each to help the old blood that is under the skin be reabsorbed.
Apply a rather loose dressing that doesn't close the wound completely off but keeps the wound clean, it should be allowed to drain somewhat.

Okay..now for the other answers, if this just happened it's most likely not an infection just yet. I've had tons of experience with these types of wounds as I was a nurse in a beef processing plant for 15 years. "Lot's of knives you know"

A few weeks ago I had a sore neck. It started under the right side of my jaw and moved across to the middle of my neck right up to my chin. It's only sore muscles and it goes after a few days, but it also gets very stiff and extremely sore, so i can't yawn or turn my head upwards, and chewing can hurt a bit too. Last time, I had a sore throat that started AFTER the muscle pain went away.

Now I'm experiencing those muscle pains again, the same way, it was underneath the right side of my jaw yesterday and has now moved into the middle and extending downward. I don't have a sore throat.

I'm nearly 18/f, and seeing a doctor presents a problem for me as I suffer uncontrollable panic attacks in those situations.

Any thoughts on what it could be?

Hi,
Although it feels like muscle pain, you should not assume that's all it is. There are several things that this could be. Even though you have not had a sore throat recently, it's possible that it could still be an infection of the sinuses, ear, salvary glands, lymph nodes and so on. This type of pain can even be related to a tooth problem, or something that is rather benign but still very painful like TMJ. If the pain is not relieved by over the counter, non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, and ice or heat packs, you really should see your Dr.

Best wishes

Does anyone know how or where I can find an accurate, reliable place that I can go to to find my family tree (like trace my ancestors). Lately, I have become very interested in this topic and my family members cannot provide me with as much information as I am curious of.

I deeply appreciate your help.

Most states have a free genealogy web site, just do a search with your state and genealogy. Then once you get to the state site, you will be able to select counties. The sites that I can think of are on rootsweb.com. There are others like Ancestry.com, but they require you to join for a fee.

The best way to start is to write down everything that you and your relatives know. Write approximate dates of births, deaths and marriages. Go to cemeteries and get dates off of headstones. Go to the local courthouse and get birth certificates, marriage certificates and death certificates. After so many years these become public information.
If you have specific years that you know where ancestors have lived, you can get census records which will give you a lot of information.

Family Tree makes a good software for you to track your information, and you can also join their website for a fee.

Good luck and this is a quite interesting and time consuming hobby, but well worth it!

My whole grade thinks im a slut because they believe stupid rumors people start.

Ok so my story: i hooked up with a guy ive like for a year last friday about 5 times. It was us and one of our good friends at his house. Well that saturday he asked me out and i said yes so hes my boyfriend now. when monday came our grade cought wind of it and starting making stuff up like i gave him a blow job and hand job and all this stuff and im such a slut when i wouldnt do that anytime soon! im like prude compared to most in my school!!!

so people have bets like "well if she didnt give him a blow job yet she probably will by the end of the week" and "theyre just going out to hook up." or "theyre like SUCH a bad couple"

were not!!!!!!!!! hes the best boyfriend i have ever had i really like him SO MUCH but what if he cant handle it and looses his friends and stuff. hes going to break up with me i think soon if this continues. now i dont know for sure but maybe. i dont know what to do. i need to talk to him ASAP but any advice?

i usually dont pay ANY attention to what people say about me but i only am because it concerens my boyfriend too! thanks so much

Talk to your b/f tell him that you have heard the rumors, but since the two of you know they are not true, eventually people will stop saying those things. If he is really that interested in you he will not sacrafice your relationship for rumors.

My family moved into a really nice house in December 05, and after a few months we realized we coulden't afford the $6000-a-month mortgage. Along with the mortgage, we have to pay $12,000 a year on taxes. We would be fine if we didnt have any other bills to pay. To help my dad, my mom started working. But she works on commision; Some paychecks are not as good as others. So to help her out, I got a job at the same place she works at. But what kills me is that both my parents gamble a lot! They gamble at least once a week, and have never won anything over than $500. And thats if their lucky. Two months ago, we went to Las Vegas and they lost $8,000 and tomorrow their going back to Vegas and I know they are going to lose even more.

If we cant afford our house, why are my parents gambling?! I feel like I have no right to tell them what to do with THEIR money, but if we cant afford the house to where my mom and I have to get a job...shoulden't I say something? I need to know how to approach my parents, or if I should say anything at all.

I really like this house and it would suck if we had to move. Thanks.

Don't worry about your Mom working to help pay the bills, that's perfectly okay. If you are a dependent minor, you should not be working to help pay the bills simply because they are not responsible with their money. That's almost reversing roles, you as the parent and them as children. In this case helping is not really helping, it's hurting them.

Honestly, it might take the loss of a nice home or the loss of everything before they stop gambling. You may like your house yes, but if it is a struggle from day to day to live there..it's just a house and not a home. A home is happy..no matter how little it costs. As you are aware by watching them gamble, money doesn't buy happiness.

I don't think you can or should approach your parents. But, you can call someone trained in addictions to help. I would say anyone who loses that kind of money and risks everything else has a problem. Perhaps a counselor can do an intervention and convince them to seek help before it's too late. If not, you of course will have to take the fall with them, but hopefully they will eventually face the music!

Hi all I am 28 years old and I have a daughter who is going to be 9 this year and she has been asking me how babies get into the tummy and what pads are for and I am having truble getting the right way to say it...As I dont remember my mom talking to me about it...But I wont to be the one to tell her so she will be able to talk to me about anything....I was not comfertable talking to my mom and I wont my daughter to be able to talk to me.......if anyone could help me please do.thanks

It really is hard to know what to say, I know where your coming from. The easiest thing for me was to read a book with my kids. If you read outloud, it's more interactive and gives an opportunity for questions, which then you can reference the answers in the book.

i have six dogs. they are all pretty old. one of my dog is blind, and 3 of them are diabetics. my mom says that chow chow will have to be put to sleep because she is blind and she bites to many people. i'm not sur if i should keep all of them or give them away. i love all of my dogs and i don't want to put anyof them to sleep. should i put them to sleep? or should i keep them. by the way they all are in pain and i know it but their my best friends.
thank you i rate high

Hi,
If you have a chow with medical problems that is biting "many" people, and since the blindness cannot be fixed, I agree that this dog would have to be put to sleep.

The other dogs that have pain issues and health problems should be on medication that will give them the best quality of life that you can give them for now.

If the pain or diabetes cannot be managed, then putting them to sleep is the 2nd choice, but it should not be your first choice. Giving them away should not be a choice. They are your "best friends" and no one else will want a dog with health problems. If you take them to the humane society, most likely they will not be adoptable and will be put to sleep anyway.

My friend's parents make her (a freshman) study non-stop. She doesn't get very good grades, but it is certainly not because of a lack of effort. She comes home from school and is forced to study and do homework from 4:00-12:00 (sometimes even until 1 or 2 a.m.). I constantly stress to her that she needs to get enough sleep and have some fun every once in a while because obviously working herself to death isn't the solution (her grades are still not that good). She has said to me numerous times that she brought a bad quiz/test grade to her mom and that her mom threw something at her. On the weekends, she is forced to study practically all day unless she is invited to go out.

Am I over-reacting or is this unhealthy? What can I do to help her?

No you are not over reacting. I am wondering if her grades improved if her parents would lighten up a little? It's always more fun to study with someone. Maybe with the help of your parents you can start a study group, where you get together with several of your friends 2-3 days a week and help each other. In college, I always studied with classmates. I learned the most this way, and we actually had fun doing it.

alright. I made a giant mistake. Well, i have a bf and i kinda like this other kid, and well i have been talking to him && i guess today he found out i had a bf, and which he NEVER asked me if i did. So, techniqually i am not lying. However, it hurt him and now he basically hates me and all. && i have talked to his mom and she is trying to talk to him.I feel sooo bad. I dont know what i should do. I already said sorry. and i know i did it to myself. I just feel so bad. Ughh.

Help!!

Thankss

Well, you have to decide which boy you like better. If you like your boyfriend better, then leave the other kid alone. Pretty much anything you say won't make him feel better as long as you are still involved with your boyfriend. He must have really liked you, or it wouldn't have made him mad.

If you like the boy is now hurt better, break up with your boyfriend and then give it some time, you may still be able to pick up the pieces.
