Sunburn

Question Posted Wednesday May 10 2006, 4:49 pm

Can you get sunburnt on your scalp, i.e. through your hair? (mine's quite thick and long). I've been in the sun all day and now my scalp is itching. What can i do to soothe it? (I can't really put aftersun cream in my hair??!!)

Don't put ice directly on sunburned skin. Yes, you can get sunburned through your hair. Buy a product like solarcaine (the caine is the pain relief medication) so another brand will do, just ask the pharmacist. Put it on at night, and wash it out in the morning using cool water and shampoo. If you are planning on being in the sun before this is healed wear a hat.

ouch! definetly part your hair differently then when it was when it got sunburned so it won't get sunburned there again. *If* it starts peeling, head and shoulders helps soothe that. if it burns then put ice cubs and let them melt. if its extremely bothering you put tiny amounts of aloe on it, which will help make it feel better and keep it from peeling even though the aloe might get in your hair, just wash your hair before you go because it will really help. it will take a couple days to get better! hope it heals quickly!

oh no!! yes you can get sunburnt on your scalp, and it sucks!! ok first of all, it's going to take a little bit of time but here is what you should do to make it feel as good as possible:

- wash your hair with luke-warm water, not cold and not scorching hot either.

- don't overwash your hair, because you will strip it of all the natural oils, make it dry, and make your scalp even more itchy. use a mild shampoo and rinse well.

- try and wear a hat when you go outside for long periods, or at least if you wear your hair parted in the middle or on the side, put a tiny bit of sunscreen on the part to prevent this in the future.

- avoid the blow dryer for a few days, because it will irritate your scalp even more! try scrunching your hair or letting it air dry!

it should feel better soon, so don't worry. just do those things and it will help it heal faster. also, just so you know, your scalp will probably start to peel soon and maybe even look like dandruff, so you can use a dandruff shampoo if you would like, such as head and shoulders. just make sure you rinse it really well! :) feel better!

Yes. I still remember one summer when I was still living in NY, my family and I went on vacation to Florida, I refused to wear a hat and by the time we were back home, my head was totally burnt.

It's aweful beacuse you can't really put anything on it without it making your hair all gross, and it hurts so badly when taking a shower. If you really did burn your scalp then I sympathize, it's no fun and all you can do is wait for it to heal.
