about

Hey Everyone :) I'm Kate and a level 2 mod on here. I've had this account since July 2004, so I've been on here since I was 13! Wow ... crazy for me to think how long ago that was. I will admit I don't check in as often as I once did, but being away at college, being in a sorority, and having a job when I'm not at school is very time consuming. I still try to help out as much as possible, and if you send me a question I WILL answer it. This site helped me a LOT when I was in high school and had a lot of questions, and I'm here to help anyone who needs it :) Feel free to write in my forum or send me a question any time!

ok i'm starting school tomorrow, and now im like freaking out. i dont wanna go. im too scared. like we dont have buses because our levie failed. so im going with a friend. so thats good. for like the beginning. and then i know my way around the school kinda, so im not too worried about geting lost. WHAT IM FREAKING OUT ABOUT THOUGH. is lunch. like all my friends last names are in the beginining of the alphabet, what if i dont have anyone. and i went to a private school. so i dont really know any of the public kids. what do i do? what if i dont know anyone? what if im aloneee. and we have such a big school.

how was it for your first day as a freshman? what did you do at lunchtime? are alot of kids felt/feeling the same way i do?

ahh pleasee help. anytihng well help.

I'll start this off by letting you know that tomorrow is my first day of senior year. I've been there and done that and you really need to know that it is 100% no big deal.

My first day was crazy. I didn't know where to go at all. I got lucky and found someone in my homeroom who I knew. So the two of us managed to find 2 others we knew and we all eventually found our way to homeroom (our first class of the day). Once we were there we realized that none of us had classes together which really wasn't cool. The good part is that a few of us had classes near each other. We all helped each other out by walking to our classes together.

I was extremely nervous about lunch. I got to my 3rd period (which was lunch period.. I was also late to class. I interupted the teacher in her speech about her disliking tardiness.. talk about bad timing). I was lucky enough to know 2 girls in that class. I was friends with one of them and I just kind of knew the other. The three of us found an upperclassmen that I knew who invited us to eat lunch with her. Lucky think I had such nice neighbors.

There are SO many people at lunch you are bound to know at least one person. Think of it this way - you may not be that great of friends with them, but if they're a nice person they won't mind you eating with them even if it's just for a few days until you find more people you know in your lunch.
This year my best friend and I were the only two people we knew in our lunch first semester. We ended up eating just the two of us for about a month until we found this girl who was in one of my classes. I asked if we could eat with them and they didn't mind. We became pretty good friends. We now go to eat at the Olive Garden every few weeks. I can't wait to get back to school tomorrow just to see my "lunch buddy" or my "math buddies", etc.

High school isn't much different than junior high. Teachers in junior high used to tell us that it would be so much harder and such, it really isn't. The classes get a bit tougher, but classes always get tougher until you learn the material. The teachers are no meaner or nicer than in 8th grade. The friend-making process is no different.
The only two big changes for me from junior high to high were
1. My classes weren't all next to each other, they were spread out around the school. The best part though were all the math classes were on the same hallway, all the english classes are on the same hallway, etc.
2. Lunch isn't by grades anymore. It's by whatever class you have. At my school english and a few FACS classes have first lunch (we have 4 lunches) History and foreign languages usually have 2nd lunch, and so on.

It's really not that bad. Didn't you make new friends when going from elementary to junior high. From 7th to 8th grade, etc.?
It's the same, just probably a bigger school.

Just make polite talk with someone who sits near you. Oh, and don't lie about doing things such as drugs and drinking. It makes you look lame and people can usually tell.
I'm friends with people who do stuff like that and I don't. They won't mind if you don't do it too.
Also, don't try and fit in to certain crowds. Be who you are, not someone else. Just because a bunch of your friends listen to hardcore rock doesn't mean you can't admit to listening to rap (get what I mean?).

High school is just middle school with different cliques. If you're lucky you won't be stuck in some stupid clique. It's four years of your like then you move on to bigger and better things. Try not to get caught up in rumors or fighting or drama. There's not a lot unless you make it a big thing.

Good luck and have fun.
You'll probably get called thing such as "freshy" but don't let the seniors scare you. Don't crowd the halls too much. If you want to talk to friends then move to the side so the upperclassmen can walk. They might shove you out of the way if you stop dead in the middle of the hallway.
Also, don't be afraid to ask someone something. Most upperclassmen aren't as scary as people think we are. =]

Have fun!!

is this a cool phone?

http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/packages/packages-details.jsp?WT.svl=calltoaction&q_package=sku980104&source=IC7001j16c0q8300

My mom has one for her job. She's really busy and is constantly getting e-mails and business calls and stuff. I think that's the type of phone it really is.

At 13 you don't need this type of phone. Even I, at almost 17, don't need this type of phone.

It's nice when you need it for business and such, but it's not really meant for someone who isn't using it for business purposes.

I think they're neat, but they are also complicated and if you don't know what you're doing you can really mess it up.

I'd say if you want something cute then go buy yourself a vibrantly colored razor phone or if you want to spend a lot of money and you have it to spend, check out an iphone. I wouldn't get one though, the battery only lasts about 4 hours (my friends step-dad has one).

hi, 15/m. i live in the uk. ii understand the different parties here, but what are the parties in the states? and what do they believe, like, what do they want to do exacly? ive heard of the republicans, and the democrats. are there any more? and how does the system work? thanks:)

First of all, not all rich people are republican and not all poor people are democrats. I'm sure you know that money doesn't make the party. It's the beliefs of the people.

I'll look up some information for you, but I just wanted to throw that in because I really did not like that others user saying that especially when all it he/she is doing is stereotyping the political parties.

I'm actually taking a US Government class this year, but school hasn't started yet and I'm sure you don't want to wait too long for the information.

Some links for you to visit

I am going to be a junior this fall and I'm finishing choosing my classes for my new schedule. Ever since I started grade I've been taking more advanced classes. As I started getting older I could only be offered a high math class as I would just sit in a 2-grade higher class. However certain sciences and whatnot are required for each grade level. With that background information I'm wondering how difficult AP Statistics should be for me. Last year I took Pre-Cal and this year I'm taking AP Calculus along with AP Stats. Keep in mind even though I am 2+ years ahead of where my classmates are the work is still very difficult, I don't just breeze through it. It's just like I'm a normal person in that class, I'm just 2 years younger. I still get B's in math.

So in response, I was wondering a. How difficult do you think it will be for me? and b. For those who have taken the class: What should I expect? What is the material like?

And yes I know, all teachers teach a class differently.. I just want you to base it on experience.

Thank youu :]

Except this in AP Stats.
LOTS and LOTS of writing. It could take up to an entire sheet of paper just for one answer.

If you mess up on one little thing (or maybe it's just the teachers at my school) then the entire thing is wrong. (I guess some teachers cut you some slack).

If you can't pull an A in the class, don't take the AP exam. Just take the regular teacher exam if one is given.

It's not that the material is difficult as long as you pay attention and stuff, it's just really drawn out. Lots and lots of word problems and such.

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you to expect LOTS of writing. I'm going to be a senior and I'm also very ahead in my math classes. I've actually taken all the classes I need to graduate except for english but I'm taking all the "fun" extra classes for my senior year just to tack on some credits.

I know this isn't really asking for advice, but the last few days I was just thinking about this and wondering why the people here joined.

I guess it is just out of pure curiosity. I would have just posted this in the moderator forum or in the supporter discussion, but I'd rather see why everyone joined rather than just those who have been here for some time and such.

So, why did you join advicenators and why are you still here? What about the site made you want to stay?

I'll probably be one of the first people to answer this (I'm not going to answer it in the question).

S_C

:]

Okay, well I joined because I was having relationship problems. Just some deal with me and a guy I really liked and who liked me but neither of our parents approved.

Anyway, I stayed because not only did I like the people, but the advice was really good. I got a lot of advice from many different people. Lots of opinions and options. Now, a lot of those people aren't around anymore, but quite a few still are. Anyway, I've been around for 3 years (as of this past July 1st.. yay!) and I've worked my way up to a level two moderator. I love the site and enjoy being apart of it.

Well, that's my reason and I'm looking forward to hearing others!

okay I lovee dr.phil and he always has these commercials for Dr. Phil House..you know the one with the twin crack addicts? well it looks very interesting but when is it on? they don't give you a time or date!

I saw it once at 9am (my time... eastern) on WSOC TV. Except it was about a really fat person who hated thin people, a white guy who was extremely racist. A black woman who didn't like white people. A straight person who hated all gay people, a lesbian who hated all straight people, etc. all who shared the house.

It was really good and I've honestly been wondering the same thing. I usually don't like Dr. Phil, but stuff like the Dr. Phil house gets me interested in him.

I suppose he'd have something about it on his website, that is if he has one, which most famous talk-show people do.

Try googling "Dr. Phil Official Website" or something along those lines. Or even just googling "Dr. Phil House" would probably get you something useful.

Is it true that girls shouldn't use tampons if they are virgins? I mean I know that they can, but I was just told that if you're a virgin you shouldn't use a tampon.
If so, why?
I have plenty of friends who are virgins and use tampons. They say it's a lot more comfortable and such. They also claim to have never had a problem with them.

I know this is a dumb question, but at least I'm not saying that I've had sex with 3 guys and that I haven't had my period and didn't use protection and want to know if I'm pregnant and/or have an STD.

Anyway, despite the oddness of the question, I was just kind of curious about it.

i have some algebra for my geometry homeork. i took algebra last year. and i dont remember how to solve this type of problem:

6+3/-8=-4

i think its no solution, but im not sure.
so whoever can let me know, thanx

This doesn't make sense because there is no variable.
Did you forget to type one in. If not then you're right I guess.

Because 9 does not equal 32.

(multiple each side by -8 and you get 6+3=32. 6+3=9, 9 doesn't = 32)

So unless you forgot a variable, you're correct.

Make sure you show your work (or at least prove how 9 doesn't equal 32)

By the way. Homework questions aren't ususally permitted on the site. But since in a way you were checking your answer it's okay.

Even though the question is over 6 months old, the feedback is brand new and still counts. Or at least, its telling me it does.

Thank you.

Okay. The person must have decided to wait 6 months before rating... weirdo. Anyway, I changed all the 1's to 3's. I'm not banning though, the user has been on once since the asking of that particular question, it's not worth the ban and complaints, etc.

i have alltel, and i have 1000 texts per month. does that mean i get to send 100 texts? or when i recieve texts does that count as part of my 1000 texts? i hope that makes sense. like lets say somebody texts me and i have 1000 texts, then do i have 999? or does it only go down if i send a text?

I too have alltel and I've kind of wondered the same thing. Most companies only charge you if you open them. So if it's a 2-word text that you can read without opening you may not get charged.

Otherwise, assume that it means send and recieve.

I'm on a plan with myself and my sister so we have to split the 1000 texts (we got to choose between that and our nights starting at 7). It's even worse for me because she texts like crazy. But I've always been used to only have 200, so having 500 to use is awesome for me.

Sorry, I got sidetracked.
Anyway, if you're still unsure then call or visit your local alltel store to find out.

I was wondering if it was required to take the SAT for most schools if you are staying in state? Some schools I'm wondering about are Northwestern (in IL), and University of Chicago. TIA=).

I couldn't find anything about Northwestern, only Northeastern... type, or am I just missing it?

Anyway, I did find something for Chicago University or whatever. It accepts both the SAT and the ACT so you can take either for there.

Most places accept both, but some do not. You just have to do a little research on your prefered schools.

If you google "colleges in Illanois" (I'm not sure if I spelt that properly) it should bring you to links. At least one of them will give you a list of some or all of the colleges. Click on the ones that you want.

You may not have to take the SAT, but it won't exempt you from a test like that in general. The ACT will be easier if you're not very skilled at english and math because it includes science and history too. (Or so I've heard, I've never taken the ACT myself, only the SAT).

[view]

What is the difference between the ACT and the SATs? Which do you think is better? Thanks for any help!

A lot of people find the ACT easier beacuse it covers a more broad range of questions. I've only taken the SAT, so I can't be 100% sure but I think that the ACT not only covers math and english but also science and history.

For those who don't excel in math and english, they're better off taking the ACT because it's much more broad and it probably won't be as hard (unless you're no good at science and/or history).

My best subjects are math (algebra, not geometry), english, and history. Because I excel at math and english I was better off taking the SAT. I think I'm going to try the ACT just to see how I would do though.

I took the SAT and made a 1710 on the new scale out of 2400. It's a pretty decent score. I have a REALLY smart friend and she got a 1940 or something along those lines. I don't really understand how the ACT is graded and such, but I could give you a good link to both.

For more information on the SAT you can go to www.collegeboard.com

For more information on the ACT you can go to http://www.act.org/

Why do hairdressers NEVER listen?
Every time I tell them not to cut my bangs or something. they go ahead and do it.

i thought it was their job to LISTEN.

You should probably take this up with the hairdresser. I've never had a problem with mine.

She gets mad at me because I always tell her to do whatever she thinks would look cute, but to change it up.

So I'm gonna be a junior in high school next year, and that means that I'm gonna go to prom. usually, most girls are looking forward to prom, right? Well not me, I'm already really worried that I won't have a date. I know it's silly, but since I'm really shy and have never had a boyfriend, I'll be going to prom alone and feel like a total loser while all my other friends have dates. I have guy friends, but none that I could really ask because THEY TOO will probably have dates/girlfriends to go with. Ahhhh I'm freaking out about this, prom is supposed to be the best night ever and I'm worried I'm gonna have a terrible time. So what I'm asking is, what can I do if I don't have a date while all my friends do? I wouldn't feel as weird if I were going with my friends, but because they're all flirty and confident, they'll probably have a lot of people asking them to prom. But I don't want to feel lonely and desperate and get turned down by a bunch of guys that already have dates.
And how can I stop obsessing over this problem, because I'm not even a junior yet?! Thanks for anyone who attempts to answer this ridiculous question, but the way, haha. Peace out.

I'm a rising senior, and trust me, prom is overrated. It's just a fancy version of any other middle school or high school dance except only open to juniors, seniors, and their dates.

Don't get me wrong, prom was fun and I had a great time with my friends. I didn't have a date and it was more fun for me because I wasn't stuck with one person and got to mingle and dance with more than just one guy. Going to dances dateless isn't as bad as people make it seem. Sure, it's prom and would probably be a lot nicer to have a date, but it's not the end of the world if you don't.
What's worse is when you and a friend promise to be each others date then he gets a girlfriend and doesn't want to upset her by going with you (talking from experience). I made the best of it and you can too! I didn't mind him going with her since they were dating (if you were dating a guy who was going to prom with someone else it'd be weird..)

Anyway, I'm sure you won't be the ONLY one without a date. Besides, you have an entire year to get a date.
If you're THAT desperate, ask a sophomore. They won't get to go any other way. But make sure it's a friend who wouldn't ditch you when you get there. I know a senior whose boyfriend is a (excuse my spelling) jahovis witness and isn't allowed to go to prom because it's some sort of social event. She took a family friend who I think was a freshman and they had a great time.

Anyway, whether or not you have a date prom will be fun. Think of it as a more expensive homecoming dance with fancier clothes.

Even if you're the only single person there amongst a group of couples, it can still be fun. Being the 3rd wheel, 5th wheel, etc. sucks, but if that starts to happen just pull your friends aside and let them know how you're feeling.

This year my friends and I were all so excited about going to prom, we thought it was going to be some AMAZING event. Nahh, it's cool and all, but totally overrated. If I could do it over I'd probably only go to my senior prom. That's the one worth going to. Junior prom was fun, but senior prom is going to be awesome. With or without dates. =D

is a burp just as disgusting as a fart? factually, not opinion-illy (not a word but w/e)

Honestly, I don't think this can be answered as a fact and not an opinion.
Some people find certain things disgusting while others don't. I honestly don't see how this could be viewed as a fact.

I know you didn't ask for an opinion, but I hope it's still okay if I give mine. I find them equally disgusting. Although burps usually don't smell as bad, they're still both gross and even though they're apart of human nature they should be done in private as much as possible. Do I occasionally let a burp out in front of friends, yes. Do we occasionally laugh when someone burps, yes. Do we occasionally get angry if someone passes gas infront of us - yeah! Most people find burping less gross because it doesn't smell as often, but they're still both gross nonetheless.

I have mono. I started by getting a horrid sore throat around June 25th. The sore throat only lasted a few days. Now the only symptoms I have are fatigue & I can feel that my spleen is enlarged & I have back pain, etc. When would it be okay to start kissing again?? Thanks!!

When your doctor tells you that you're no longer contagious.

If you're not contagiuos and you can handle a momentary lack of airflow then you're fine.

If you've ever seen Something's Gotta Give with Jack Nicholson(sp?) then you know after his heart attack in the movie his doctor says no sex until you can walk a flight of stairs.

Soo, once your fatigue is mostly gone (or all the way gone) and you're not in much pain, and you're not contagious - kiss away.

BUT because I'm probably dumb and possibly wrong, check with a doctor. You may think it's embarassing to ask, but it really isn't. They get questions like this a lot.

I know you all proabbly hate these questions but
what foods can make my butt grow bigger, but not my stomach
ahah its that even possible

i would have googled
but i wasnt to sure of how to type that in

Honestly, yep, I hate the questions. Want to know why?

Because it's impossible to do so.

Why girls think that we can gain weight in only specific areas is beyond me.

Anyway, the best I can give you is to talk to someone who knows about fitness. I doubt he can help, but go to Mike's column, his username is Evolution. He's a fitness instructor or something along those lines. Let him know that S_C sent you to him.

If it is possible at all (which I highly doubt) then he would know.

Why do some people sleepwalk? My mother has said
I do this now and then.

Should I be concerned? I usually just look out the kitchen window for a few minutes and go back to bed.
Its only happened a couple of times.

I think the only reason you should be concerned is if you're hurting anyone or anything, including yourself. BUT, because I'm not expert, I googled some links that may help you.

this is going to sound really wierd, but do you know hannah montana's hair? she has like very loose curls and such and i was wondering if anyone knows how i can get them. i have REALLY thick hair and its guess you could say medium length. i have used hot rollers but they never seem to stick. thanks

"Hannah Montana's" hair is straight. Also, Hannah Montana is a character from a tv show. The actress/singer is Miley Cyrus and it is her hair that has the loose curls. You should really know the correct name of the person whose hair you would like to mimic.

Anyway, a simple curler, hair dryer, and curly brush could do the trick, especially if you want loose curls. Make sure that you get one of the bigger, thicker curling irons though. The smaller ones will work, but not as well in my opinion.
Or, another simple thing to do, go to your hair stylest or someone you know who is good with hair, ask how they think you should do it.

I firmly believe that I have a mental illness. Not something serious. Just like a personality disorder. However, my parents think I'm perfectly normal...and just exaggerating. However, I'm not. But whenever I try to tell them, they shrug it off and refuse to let me go to a therapist or something. What can I do to make them listen to me? Is there some kind of online or on-the-phone service? Thank you. =]

The other people who have answered gave you good advice and I don't want to just repeat what they're saying. I'm pretty sure someone already told you to see your school councilor when school gets back in session.
Another thing you can do (I'm not sure if this one was mentioned, I don't think it was) is at your next doctors appoinment you can mention how you feel to your doctor. Then, if they're qualified, they can test you out and tell your parents whether or not you need help. Or they can tell your parents to take you to someone who can help you. Your parents won't have to listen to the doctor, but it's better than nothing.

Anyawy, as for there being an online or on-the-phone service, possibly, but I doubt it. It's hard to determine mental illness and any other sickness whether physical or mental, without meeting the person face to face and actually giving some kind of check up.
