about

I am 48 years old (yes that's old compared to some of you).

I have worked in nursing and/or healthcare management positions for 24 years. Primarily OB, Neonatal, Mental Health, Occupational Health and Geriatrics. In Jan 2008 I started my own business to board horses and do equine/human education. I am also a certified dog trainer.

I've been around the block so to speak and seem to be always helping others. I've been told that the reason people seek me out for advice is that I am approachable and caring. But on the same token even though I consider the person's feelings. I tell it like I see it. I've dealt with people in trouble with the law, dysfunctional families such as those with abuse & marriage problems. Not to mention problems with employees and employers.

I don't ever claim to know it all, and always keep an open mind.

advice

He is only an 8 year old Boxer and healthy. But all day he hasn't drank any water or ate any food. I have noticed this stuff all afternoon and night. I can hear his stomache growl whenever he coils up his body. He doesn't like to just stand, he has to walk or lay down. He seemed dizzy when walking down the stairs. He has been throwing up a lot today, and once yesterday. (boxers are proned to stomache problems so that wasn't too abnormal). He has been burping a lot. Me and my mom had a lot of trouble trying to get him to drink water. He wouldn't drink from his bowl with tap water, so I filled a glass with fresh water. He drank from that. Then me and my mom poured the fresh water in his bowl and he wouldn't drink it. What I think the cause of his stomache pain is either:
-hes dehydrated and hungry.
-he has a stomache ulcer (we just got back from vacation last monday (a week ago) so he might be stressed out whenever we go out to dinner or something.)
-he just refuses to drink from the bowl.
-he just refuses to drink tap water.

Anything would do. Sorry it was so long. I rate 5s.

There's so many things this could be, from a stomach torsion to a bowel obstruction of another type. I highly doubt he has a stomach ulcer.

Some dogs who are stressed will not eat for a day or two, but as long as they are drinking normal amounts of water it's usually not a big deal.

You need to take the dog to the vet now!

Ok, I have had two (well, more lke 4 but only 2 lasted a long time) leased ponies/horses in my life. Everybody tells me that it is always a good idea to have my lease in writing but I don't. I lease one from my trainer and one from my family friends and have never had problems with either. I guess I'm just looking for a discussion of the good and bad things about getting the lease in writing.

It's always a good thing to have any kind of financial agreement in writing. Make sure who pays the vet bills, and liability insurance is listed in the lease. There is no cons to having the lease in writing, it will protect you and the owner both in case something comes up.

We have a little Chihuahua, and when he goes outside to pee, he pees on his front leg. He does lift his hind leg, and that's when he pees on his front one. If he were to sqat instead, he wouldn't pee on it, but he's a boy dog, so he lifts his leg.

Is there any kind of harness that we can get to keep him from being able to hike his leg when he pees? We go through baby-wipes like mad at this rate. :-(

You could try this. Get one of those fake plastic fire hydrants, or use a thicker wooden post & place it in a part of the yard away from everything. When you mow, allow the grass to grow around it a bit. You can buy the urine scent that is used for housebreaking at the pet store, spray that scent about 5 inches from the ground, be careful not to let any drip down. That way when your dog want's to mark his territory he will have to lift his leg a little higer to cover the other scent. In addition the grass around the post will act like a sheild to block the urine from going onto his leg. Good luck :-)

We are moving this summer and my parents told me I could get a dog. I want a small dog that I can carry around with me everywhere. I've thought about getting a bichon frise for quite some time, but I found out that they can get fairly big sometimes. Any ideas on some small, full bred dogs I could get? And some of the positives and negatives about them?

Small dogs often have temperment issues because someone spoils them and carries them everywhere!

I am currently going to school to be a dog obiedience trainer and one class I took was breed selection. If you tell me more about your lifestyle..Like what do you do for fun? Are you active or laid back? Is someone going to be home most of the time? Do you have a fenced yard? Are there younger children in the household? If you want just send the question to my in box and I can help you.

hey everyone wel im a 15/f && when i wuz 6 yrs old my aunt died of breast cancer... i use to always be with her.. she would baby-sit me && take me places... like the mall && stuff.. and her daughter (my cousin) is married and now has a kid named sonia (my niece) she's really cute but the thing is im not sure how wil my cousin tell her about my aunt?? its rreally complicated.. and i sometimes even cry whenever i think of her b/c i miss her soo much!!! my uncle is weird.. ever isince my aunt died he's been bitter (well thats just my opinion) but yeah

First of all I don't mean to dissapoint you, but your cousin's daughter is not your niece, that's your cousin too. I know you miss your aunt very much, but her grandaughter didn't know her so it will be eaiser that way.

Sometimes it's just best to tell the child "Grandma's in heaven" and she would have really loved you if she were still here" It's a good idea to show her pictures and tell her all the good things so the wonderful memories you all have can live on. I am sure your cousin will deal with it when the time comes and her little girl is old enough to understand.

Yes, sometimes people become bitter about death, so you may be right about that.

I like this guy a lot. And only my best friends know I like him. And I think I love him. We talk from time to time. But we arn't friends: he is popular and I have lik 20 close friends, but we're not popular, just really friendly. So we talk about hockey (Because we both play) and that is basically it. I was planning on telling him how i feel about him next time I see him.

But today, I was talking with my really good friend who I just told the other day (making her the 4th person who knows) and she said that he smoked pot. Now, this person isn't one to gossip--- she never does, doesn't say anything unless its true, but today, she said she was almost positive that ricky smoked pot.

My dad is very ANTI drug ANTI sex ANTI anything illegal. But he really likes this kid; they met via my hockey. He says we would make a great couple.

I would date him if he smokes, because I care for this guy so much, I think i might be able to change that *it sounds mean,-- i dont want it to* but my dad wouldn't stand for it.

I really don't know what to do. I'm sure if I tell this guy that I like him, he'll like he too, because everyone knows he has a thing for me. Please help me!
Thanks

It is not reality to think that you can change another person. He will probably just get good at hiding it from you. Sorry that you like him so much, but he won't be popular for long. Smoking pot will drag a person down and you don't want to be involved in that. You deserve better. Tell your Dad "He's not my type and if you knew more you wouldn't approve" and leave it at that.

I just found out that there is going to be a ten year highschool reunion for my grad class this august. I said I was going to go and already sent the check in the mail. Well I looked at the website for who is already signed up to go and this guy that was really popular who I was madly in love with is going to be there. He knew I liked him and treated me like dirt. I still get nightmares sometimes. I've changed alot since school. My question is how can I be less nervous when I go and have to see him? Also how should I act around him?

I suggest avoiding him, but if he approaches you or you have no choice but to meet him head on, just smile and say "Hi". If he tries to start a conversation make an excuse "I'm sorry to cut you short but I have to return a call" Be confident and pay a lot of attention to everyone else besides him. If he is good at picking up on cues he will leave you alone.

i went to the doctor yesterday because i thought i had a UTI. i peed in the cup and they tested it and said that i didnt have a UTI. so all i have to do is every day for a couple of days is go in the bath and soak with water in vinager and if it doesnt help then go back.
i feel like i have to pee alot and it like bothers me "down there" and its like all the symtoms of a UTI but its not it!
im only 13 too.
and im scared i have like a problem
do you know what it could be??

This happened to me once and I convinced the Dr to give me antibiotics anyway and it worked.

Did you give a sample early in the morning? Maybe after you drank water during the day the bacteria count was so low (because the urine was dilute) you do have an infection afterall.

I have never heard of soaking in vinegar water, I would think that would be irritating. Perhaps a baking soda bath would help more. I do know it feels like a UTI when some people use bubble bath or certain bathsoaps, so try not to use any soap in your water for a week or so and see if that helps.

I would suggest drinking a lot of water & cranberry juice. Also you might ask your parent to speak with the pharmacist about over the counter medicine for urinary discomfort.

about a year and a half ago i did something so stupid. i cut a strand of hair in front of my head thinking it was no big deal because i just wanted it gone. then i realized it would grow back. so i shaved it but then i let it grow for awhile..then i couldnt take it and tweezed it.. that lasted for awhile because it grew back as normal tiny hairs instead of spikes..but then recently i couldnt stand these random baby hairs i had in the front of my head from tweezing it so i shaved them off. you think i wouldve learned after one time..but no. so now im stuck shaving this area of stubble in the front of my head 2 times a day..which gives me razor burn and since its on my head it looks like acne. and my mom found out and told my whole family and now they make fun of me and my mom wont even help me. shes like "haha now its gonna grow back in sticking up in the front" i just dont know what to do anymore. any suggestions of how to undo this mess?

Hi,
Since I can't see your hair it's hard to give suggestions. You might try a different hair style perhaps one with bangs or parting your hair on the side. Maybe you could wear a hat? Or perhaps as the stubble gets more noticable you can try hair wax or a heavy gel to make it lay down better. If anyone makes fun of you try to laugh with them, and laugh at yourself too. That way you won't feel so bad.

ok what are good diet foods
im 13/f
and please dont give me any foods that i never herd of i just want simple things

and when do you start to see results when you on a diet?

The results depend on a lot of things, including the diet, your current weight now, your metabolism and the amount of calories you are burning. It's better to lose weight at a slower rate. I'd say even 2 lbs a week would be acceptable. It's important to eat a wide variety of foods with in the food pyramid guidelines.

Some ideas for good diet foods are:
Carrots, celery and other crunchie veggies.
Low fat milk or cottage cheese.
Grapefruit and other citrus fruits.
Lean protien such as sirloin steak.

Avoid processed meat, any bread that is not whole grain, high sodium and high fat foods.

Just wondering, but why does the majority of this site use horrible spelling and grammar when they ask questions? True, I understand it may be faster, but when you have a serious question such as when a friend might die, wouldn't you want others to understand what you're talking about? Also, why are there so many questions on people wanting to kill themselves, cutting themselves, and being just downers in life? Life can be so wonderful, and people make it seem so horrible when they cut themselves because their parents don't let them out past 9 or don't buy them a car, when they should feel lucky that they even have caring parents, or even food on the table. I dunno, just... why?

Thanks in advance.

It's not just people on this site that use poor grammar and spelling, it's everywhere. For me, I am very dependent on spell check, and of course that's not a feature here. Yes it's important to word the question in a way most can understand, but not everyone has good written communication skills. It does not always mean they lack intelligence. It may be because English is their second language or they have not reached that level in their education. Some use "gang slang" or short hand because that is how they are used to communicating on a computer. I agree that eventually in most people's lives written communication will be important.
As far as why there are so many downer questions? It's probably because this is a place to seek advice where people shouldn't have to feel judged. People have difficulty speaking of those issues in person with others, so this is much easier. It's obvious that there is a lot of dysfunction in the world today. I have seen it first hand in the patients I have cared for, in my friends, sometimes my own family, and often in my employees. Yes, life can be wonderful but at times it's also very hard, and that is why we all need to vent or ask a question or seek out support.

I too am disappointed in kids that have everything they need, but still complain that they don't have what they want. My own Mother swears it's because they have too much.

I'm 26/f and I'm still a virgin. I started my period when I was 10, but it has never been regular. Sometimes I'll go months without having one, and sometimes it'll be really heavy and other times I'll just spot a little. I've never been to a gynocologist. That's just how it's done in my family, no girl goes to the gynocologist until they either get pregnant or go on birth control. Since I'm not sexually active and I don't plan to go on losing my virginity until my wedding night, there's never been a reason for me to see a gynocologist. I guess I should also mention that I am extremely overweight, which I'm working on losing. I have a feeling that my weight has a lot to do with it, because I had lost alot of weight and my periods became more regular. But I had to go through shoulder surgery and had some steroid injections and I gained alot of weight. Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to ask is can my irregular periods mean that I won't be able to have kids. I'm really scared because I love kids. I really want to be a mother some day. Sorry this is so long.

If you don't want to see a Gyn. it would be a good idea to at least discuss your concerns with your family Dr. Irregular periods could mean that you are not ovulating one time a month and it is possible it would be difficult to get pregnant if you don't seek treatment.

However, I do know others who had very irregular periods and thought that they couldn't get pregnant, and they did, even without medical intervention. Their odds were lower, but it was not impossible.

A nurse that I worked with was over weight and had irregular periods and wanted to get pregnant so the gyn put her on birth control pills for a year in attempts to regulate her cycle, then she had to go off the pill for 3 months and use another method. On the 4th month she monitored her basal temperature each morning and discovered that she was in fact ovulating, and she got pregnant. She has three kids now, so obviously if weight is a factor it can be corrected in some cases.

ok since your a nurse you might be able to help
im 13 year old girl and im a virgin.
i masterbate and today i fingered my self
and i dicovered that my whole is kind of small. is that normal??
and can i get pregnant from doing it and will it stop my period or hurt me or something??

As far as normal size, everyone is different and that will probably change as you mature. No you cannot get pregnant from doing this. It should not stop your period, but could delay it by a day or two. As far as hurting you there's always the possiblity of infection and tears or abrasions to the sensitive skin from doing it too harshly or from your fingernails. I do suggest either speaking with your parents, Dr. or school counselor on the topic of reproduction and sexuality.

hi! :]

my boyfriend & i had been together for almost 2 months. i really had strong feelings towards him. he always treated me right, i knew he was the one.

he broke up with me today and his reason was because he's looking for a girl whose a "woman of god" & that isn't me. he called me back about 3 hours after he broke up with me, and said that he had talked to his best friend & he heard a song that reminded him of me. & he wouldn't know how to go on without me. also that my religion doesnt really matter right now we just have to live each day by itself.

now he wants me back. but ive talked to my mom & sister about this already and they both said i shouldnt get back with him.

i really like him, i might even love him. do you think that me taking him back would be completely bad?

please help.
thanks a lot.

In reference to another answer, sometimes religion does matter. Although some people can overlook the differences, others cannot. He is obviously struggling with those differences. It is best to come to terms with this before a long term committment to each other.

I'd say if you can work out an agreement regarding your religious belief systems then it would be okay to take him back.

If you sense that he is not completely comfortable with your religion and neither of you are willing to convert, then this might be an indication of future problems and your Mom and Sister may just be right

i am a very shy person, even when i am around people i know i always feel like anything i say they are judging me about it! or that they are talking about me! i suppose its more that i am paranoid, but is there anything i can do to stop this!? please help its really embarrasing!

I've never really been shy, but I didn't have very high self esteem either and I used to be just like you described. Finally after building my confidence in a lot of areas of my life, I quit doing this without even trying. So try building up your self esteem and see if the "paranoia" goes away.

this seemed like the best column to me, sry if it's not in the right place.
i have serious trouble sleeping. for example, right now it's midnight and i am dead tired. so far i've layed down to go to sleep about 4 or 5 times. every time i do, within 15 to 30 minutes i start to feel very restless. i toss and turn, i try different positions, i sit up and lay back down, and various other things. what should i do? should i go so far as to see a doctor?
~anonamousadviceseeker

As far as seeing a Dr. If this is affecting your daily life when you should be awake, then the answer would be yes. I think the ohters gave some good advice, but since you mentioned tossing and turning it could be something as simple as your mattress. If you can't afford a new one try a feather bed that you can put on top of your mattress. In addition, what I found works for me is to turn my clock backwards and not watch the time!

I haven't had my period for at least 4 months. I'm a virgin. Does anyone know why this is? Should I see a doctor. 15/f Will rate high.

Yes, you should see a Dr. There are so many things that could cause this it wouldn't be fair to guess. The rule of thumb is if you have missed your period for at least 3 months (and know you are not pregnant) then a physician should be consulted.

I've been in love with the same guy for about 2 years. I've "went out" with him about 6 times, and 4 of the times he has cheated on me. He tells me all the time that he loves me (when he's with another girl) but then when we go out, he completely ignores me. So, I basically still love him and I don't want to. What would be a good way to keep him off my mind forever and stop loving him?

I think the key to lightening your load is to understand people like him. Some people want what they can't have, then when they have it they don't appreciate it. He's a player, and it's good that you know that. When he's with you he feels some sort of satisfaction because you are forbidden territory due to his commitment to the other girl. However, once he is with you the challenge is gone, so his behavior no longer gives him a thrill (so he ignores you)

Now I am not discounting your feelings, but love is easily confused with an addiction. He is fueling the addiction by telling you that he loves you. It's really hard to break this pattern, but with time you will be able to move on. No matter how hard it is, do not ever see or talk to this guy again. If he calls, hang up. If he comes over, slam the door in his face. If you allow him any contact, such as even a phone conversation it will be much harder to get your mind off of him. Time and distance is the only solution...and remember we can't live our life in the past by reciting "what if". Don't look back and take it one day at a time.

If your body rejects a piercing, what will it look like? What are the signs of the body rejecting ANY piercing? I have my finger web pierced and it's really dry around the edges and I'm worried my body might be rejecting it!!

The skin peeling could be a sign, redness or swelling might be others, but these are also symptoms of infection. Any concerns about infection should be addressed by a Dr. If you really think it's more of a rejection issue, try a "ring--stud" what ever you have, that contains a completely different type of metal and see if that is better.
