this seemed like the best column to me, sry if it's not in the right place.
i have serious trouble sleeping. for example, right now it's midnight and i am dead tired. so far i've layed down to go to sleep about 4 or 5 times. every time i do, within 15 to 30 minutes i start to feel very restless. i toss and turn, i try different positions, i sit up and lay back down, and various other things. what should i do? should i go so far as to see a doctor?

I think the ohters gave some good advice, but since you mentioned tossing and turning it could be something as simple as your mattress. If you can't afford a new one try a feather bed that you can put on top of your mattress. In addition, what I found works for me is to turn my clock backwards and not watch the time! - Another thing to try would be listening to music softly. My dad did it growing up and now he listens to radio shows. If you close your eyes, lay in bed, and focus on listening, it will probably aid in helping you fall asleep. Sometimes i put on soft classical music.
-Drinking warm milk or tea
- Laying in bed with your eyes closed, breathing in deep and with each breath you let you relax your body from top to bottom letting go all muscle tension; Become like a rag doll. I did this once and I felt like I was floating and had no desire to move whatsoever.
- Reading or writing in a diary may be a good idea or it may not, since both those activities require light and that may make it harder to fall asleep.
If the problem persists, just go and see a doctor. it may be stress related, or something else.

Its like my legs and body cant stay still and I just need to move, but I'm so tired!
The best thing I've found is watch a little tv, or read a book, or exercise, to get rid of the twitch. If that doesnt help, you shoudl see a doctor about sleep problems.
JBella123 answered Thursday June 22 2006, 5:02 pm: I would first try writing in a diary and then when you wake up read a book and if that doesnt work i would absolutley see a doctor and the can find out y you are not sleeping at night. [ JBella123's advice column | Ask JBella123 A Question ]
Mr.Advice1120 answered Thursday June 22 2006, 11:04 am: Hello, i was thinking and i came to the conclusion that you might have insomnia. if you find yourself tired but cant fall asleep then you just might have insomnia. for this you need to get exercise and eat healthy. along with that start making a reasonalble bedtime for yourself.
LOVEx3DISASTER answered Thursday June 22 2006, 10:29 am: yeah, you should go see a doctor. and ask him what kind of medicine you should take. then just take that and see if it works. if it dosnt, i would go back to the doctor to tell him
Good Luck=D

Melanie4981 answered Thursday June 22 2006, 6:38 am: Hi there,
I used to have real trouble sleeping and there were a few things I did that really helped.
1) No excersize or vigorouis activity 4 hours before bed.
2)Take a long hot/cool (depending on the weather!) bath with loads of bubbles (try anything with lavender and chamomile they help to unwind you.)
3)get into clean fresh pj's
4)have a mug of warm milk with honey.
5)When you get into bed darken the room and make it as quiet as possible!
Other things I do are: Make sure I go to bed at the same time each night and wake up at the same time in the morning, this way your body gets into a routine and by 11pm when I go to bed my body is tired and expecting sleep.
If I am having a articularly bad night and I can't sleep I get up. Stretch my muscles, wlak around for 5 minutes then go back to bed and try again!
Sleeping pills have more side effects than Google has searches so I tend not to take them, but if you are having real trouble and it starts to affect your daytime life then speak to your parents who could maybe get you to see a sleep therapist or doctor to see whether you have any medical reasons for not being able to relax/sleep at night.
ChOcOLoLo answered Thursday June 22 2006, 12:57 am: Hey there! Yes, you could possibly seek a doctor. However, your inability to sleep could be from countless thoughts of the day and the next day. Try to close your day formally in your mind, and tell yourself that the things you were unable to accomplish today will be easily accomplished tomorrow. I've also had trouble sleeping lately, and another option you could perform is drinking honey and apple cider vinegar. What you do is, obtain a glass of water, and add two teaspons of honey and (Bragg) Apple Cider Vinegar. It works wonders on headaches, and sleepless nights. I sincerely hope everything works out! Take care always!
