about

Hey Everyone :) I'm Kate and a level 2 mod on here. I've had this account since July 2004, so I've been on here since I was 13! Wow ... crazy for me to think how long ago that was. I will admit I don't check in as often as I once did, but being away at college, being in a sorority, and having a job when I'm not at school is very time consuming. I still try to help out as much as possible, and if you send me a question I WILL answer it. This site helped me a LOT when I was in high school and had a lot of questions, and I'm here to help anyone who needs it :) Feel free to write in my forum or send me a question any time!

any fellow columnists love themselves some Pink Floyd? care to school me? lol

Pink Floyd is amazing.
I love their album, "The Wall". It's my favorite.
My fave songs by them are The Happiest Days of Our Lives & Their Another Brick In The Wall songs.

I don't really know what you want to know, though.

Seriously, just google them.

Do you want to know their songs & music, about the group as a whole, etc?

Alright, I really can't figure this out. And I searched the questions first too and couldn't find the answer...

How do you put up a full-size picture on your advice column here? Whenever I try, the picture is too big. Other columnists have these full-size pictures and I want to know how they did it...

Thanks =]

EDIT (again)
I know you haven't seen my first edit, but I visited your column again to see the smaller picture. It looks great :).
//End 2nd edit

//EDIT!!!
I'm not calling you stupid, please don't feel that way.
I can see your account because I am an L2 and we have that ability to moniter abuse and suspend the accounts of rule-breakers. (We have to go through a few links to see it, but we're able to). We don't look at the account of every user who asks a question. We're only supposed to do that if the user is abusing the site. Occasionally we'll do that if the question is site-related (especially if they're asking a question about why they're in trouble, why something on their column doesn't work, etc.)

I didn't mean to make you feel embarrassed at all! I'm sorry you feel that way.
I was able to see your picture just fine, and what I saw was an extremely large image that stretched out your page in a very eye splintering manner.
END EDIT!

You have already been given the answer you need (and used it, I see), but I have something to add to this.
As a site admin, I'd like to let you know that we don't like a lot of users to have full size pictures because 1. this site is for advice, not hosting tons of large pictures and 2. many of them, like you, don't take into consideration what large pictures do to their column, and they don't pay attention to how large their pictures actually are.

Go look at your column if you haven't already done so.

Your picture is SO large that nobody can see your column without having to scroll down & side to side. We can barely read your bio info because it's so scrunches together & then, once underneath your picture, extremely stretched out!

I like the picture you have, it's a beautiful nature shot, but if you were to go to your computer's paint program and shrink it a little, you can re-upload it to one of the aforementioned picture sites & put it on your column again. This time it would be smaller, but it would not be as small as the upload feature makes it.

Your picture is extremely large & there is no reason you can't edit it to make it the size of the pictures of some of these users:

http://www.advicenators.com/column.php?u=Matt
http://www.advicenators.com/column.php?u=cuxmibecknow7
http://www.advicenators.com/column.php?u=LaUgH_OuT_LoUd_x0x
http://www.advicenators.com/column.php?u=lauraxomichelle

I'm not saying your picture has to be as small as mine (which was uploaded, not hosted by a website), but it doesn't have to be so large that you have to scroll all over your page to see it & the rest of your column.

Think about it...

People are lazy. It's human nature. You're going to find very few people who feel like continuously scrolling around your page to look at your picture & advice.

I'm sorry if this came across rudely. That's not my intention at all. I just wanted you to know that your picture is overwhelmingly large & give you some examples of decent sized photos.

heyy, advicenators :)

i have a whiteboard 11" x 14" & i want to make it like a calendar whiteboard, like this:

http://www.flex-a-chart.com/1M4832.htm

but without the message space on the right side. so, this is for school to mark up important dates, and i wanted to know how to do it.

now, i know you might be thinking "just draw black lines vertically & horizontally" but the thing is, the boxes are going to be kinda small and so when i go to write in it, the lines might smudge and it'll look reallyyy messy. and when i go from month to month, i'll have to erase the WHOLE thing (otherwise i'll have to erase every single little number!) and then redraw all the lines.

does anyone have any other ideas? i was thinking of using string to divide the white board, or like construction paper. what do you think would be the easiest for when i have to erase the whole white board when i switch months? i'd PREFER not to use permanent marker cause i don't want to permanently leave my whiteboard like that -- just during the schoolyear.

also, i can't really find whiteboard calendars like the one above for cheap. that's why i was thinking of converting my plain whiteboard into one that can be used as a monthly calendar.

or, does anyone have any other ideas in order to track my assignments, tests, & projects? i used to make a table like "date, subject, assignment" and have three columns but i'm a visual person and those never really cut it.

ideas so far:
- string? (but won't the strings get looser and looser as i keep erasing from month to month?)
- construction paper? (will they rip?)

thank you!

A lot of teachers put colored tape on their white boards to divide it into a calander. That way the only thing you have to erase are the numbers & such. Then again, they only made their calanders for every 2 weeks, so they had a lot of room to write.

I'm sure if you used thin, brightly colored tape, then it coudl work.

Construction paper would probably rip & I'm not really sure how well the string thing would work out.

Anyway...

You can usually buy colored masking tape. If you can't, then go ahead and buy the regular yellowish-tinted one and maybe color it in? Or you can just use it as-is to divide the board into the sqaures/rectangles (you can always cut the tape in 1/2 or 1/4 that way it's a lot .thinner & gives you more room to write)

You can also put a long piece of tape at the very top & Write SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIEDAY SATURDAY on the tape that way you don't always have to erase that. If you need to, leave a little space above the days of the week to write the name of the month.

To give yourself more room, get the fine, thin-tipped whiteboard markers (although I'm sure you already know that).

i just bought a graphing calculator, it's a ti-83. i've never used one before, and i can't figure out how to go up to the previous calculations that i've done. on my old scientific calculator you just had to press the up arrow, and you could scroll through all the problems you have done. also, when i do a few problems and i keep them all on the screen & i try to use the arrow keys to move up and down between several lines, it doesn't let me. help please!

:) thanks

The unfortunate thing about the TI-83 is that the arrows aren't meant for scrolling through problems you have done, they are for scrolling under the options areas & such.

To get to the last problem you have done (after clearing) you hit 2nd & enter.

The problem with that is if you ever uset the "answer" button.

For example, say you do 2x3. It comes out 6. Then you do ans^2. You'll get 36.
2x3
6
ans^4
36
Then you hit 2nd enter & see "ans^4.
If you hit "enter" to receive the answer, rather than receiving '36' again, you will receive "1679616" (the answer to 36^4).

I'm sorry if that's confusing, but it's the only way I know how to explain it without being next to you and showing you in person...

Unfortunately, the TI-83 isn't as great as it could be. That's why there are newer, more advanced models out there.

You think it would be nicer for how expensive they are, though :).

Mt Everest is the tallest mountain, if that's what you're looking for. (I think, anyway)

As for mountain peaks:
The Rocky Mountains, Himalayas, Appalachians, Andes, etc.

I don't know why is the biggest, but those are among the biggest.

What should i do i am getting braces and what should i use to make the pain go away after please let me know. and what pattern on my rubberbands should i get????

You really don't feel much pain after getting your braces on.
It feels more like a tightening or even kind of what it felt like to have a tooth grow in. It's irritating.

Just take some pain meds. You can take tylenol, ibuprofin, etc. Whatever works best for you. Better to take it right after getting them on so the medicine kicks in by the time the pain starts coming.

For the first few days you'll want to eat soft foods only.
The first day I had my braces on, I ate mashed potatoes and half of a hot dog. It's all I could stand.
Within a few days, you'll be fine. Now you just won't be able to eat sticky or too-hard foods.
Make sure you brush really, really well. It's very easy to get cavities with braces if you don't brush well enough.

Should middle schools give out condom

Well, since it's illegal to buy them until you're 16 (in the US, anyway), I would have to say no. I highly doubt there are any 16 year old middle schoolers.

Then again, if the parents vote on it and give their permission, I guess there's no reason not to.

We can only educate young kids so much before they decide for themselves what they want and how far they'll go to get it.

Better to have them protected than not.

Some may argue that offering condoms will entice them, make them feel we are telling them it's okay.
I don't see that as the case. I see giving out condoms as telling people to have safe sex...

you answered a question about college level books or something. but all freshman in any college have to read the glass castle? im 15 and i read that a few years ago... and yes it is a great book, one of my favorites

I know last year my school read something else, IDK what though.

I don't really know any specific college level books.

Your best bet is to go to your nearest university and browse through their library - it's open to the public, but I think there's a fee or something to check out a book if you're not a student (or find a college student you know to check you out a book).

My boyfriend is 20 and I'm 16, we have been dating for a while.. I am more sexual than he is believe it or not. I have never met a guy quite like him.. he has only has sex with one other girl besides me they has sex twice.. me and him have only has sex 1 time and it was for only like 5 seconds.. he didn't cum or anything. He doesn't want to have sex i don't know what it is.. i named somethings to him like have had bad experiences or worried bout having bad experiences.. worried bout gettin me pregnant.. self conscious.. jus not attracted to me.. worried about stds.. all this stuff and he said that it isn't any of that... what do you think it could possibly be?

There are various reasons.
All include the reasons that you listed.
He may have lied to you saying no to a reason you listed.
He could be secretly homosexual.
He could be nervous about your age and if something wrong were to happen, being charged with statutory rape (when an adult has sex with a minor).
He could realize that he wants to wait until marraige (or just until you're older).
He might be confused and think you're taking it too quickly.

Don't be in such a hurry. If you're only in this relationship for sex, then you might want to get out now because it doesn't seem like that's going to happen. You're young. You shouldn't be in a relationship for sex. You may not just be in it for sex, but you make it seem that way in your question and I'm not mind reader to know any differently.

Don't pressure him. You wouldn't want a guy to pressure you, so don't do the same to him.

does anybody have a list of college level books i an read???
all i know is shakespeare...
thanks, i need this to 'expand my vocabulary' for my SAT test!
thanks for your answers [=

All incoming freshman at my college are required to read The Glass Castle.
It's a memoire, but it's pretty good (so far - I haven't finished it). I think it's by Jeanette Walls (Sp?).

Since it's required reading, I suppose that makes it a college level book.

But, since you're looking to expand your vocabulary, there are tons of great websites with SAT vocab words and such. All you really need is a google search for them.

Hi,

I am a 20 year old vigin and i wnated to know
Can you get pregnant the day BEFORE your period starts? My period lasted for 5 days. This incident happened in february. I am asking this as I had a sexual experience where a man put his fingers inside my vagina i am not sure if their was any sperm on them. I have had a pregnancy test done at the family planning and it was negative and I have also done several home pregnancy tests and they were also negative.

Please help I am really worried that the pregnancy tests i have had are wrong

Vicki

You can get pregany any time, andy day, any week, any month, any year.

Now, the chances of you getting pregnant from this situation are pretty low, but it is still possible.

Although, if it happened in February and you've taken home AND a professional pregnancy test, you should be okay.
AND, if it happened in February, you would more than likely have started to show by now (that's 5 months!).

If you're still worried, take one more PROFESSIONAL test. Go see your doctor.
If that one comes out negative, then you should be fine.

This guy i had a crush on told me that i was a hoe and i replied sayin "not to talk to me again" and he replied saying "sorry" I dont know whether i should forgive him and im really hurt all of his friends says hes really sorry he wants me to talk to him again but i dont know. WHAT SHOULD I DO???

Was he joking when he called you a ho?
A lot of guys (and girls) for some reason like to call the friends hos and sluts. (like "what's up, ho?" and stuff like that).

It hurts to be called names & such, even in a joking matter.
I don't think you should end the friendship, though.

Giving him a second chance doesn't sound too bad. Make sure he knows that he hurt your feelings and that you don't appreciate being called degrading names.

If it happens again, after you've told him you don't like it, then don't bother with him. He's a jerk for not respecting your wishes.

If he tries anything with you, just tell him to screw off and you want nothing to do with him. But, if he's sincerely sorry, give him one more chance. It's not like you were dating & he cheated - that, I believe, is unforgivable.

Hey,

I was just wondering, Is there a way for someone to become a moderator on the site? Do you need to be on the site for a long time?

How does this work?

Thanks!

BahaiMa22 :)

There's a link in the FAQ on how to become a moderator.

But to keep it simple for ya, here you go.

If you meet these requirements, you'll be made into one.
If not, it should tell you what you're missing.

DangerNerd (the site owner) is working on a way to make becoming a moderator more difficult (because many moderators don't do their jobs and for various other reasons). So take advantage of the opportunity to become one now before it becomes tougher (and note that if you become one now and don't rate questions & work as a good columnist (follow site rules, user correct spelling & grammar, give good advice - helpful, not rude, insensitive, etc. then you will be demoded).

Good luck & let me know if you have any other qestions.

I want to make this very clear. I am only asking this question to people who have tried this themselves. If you have not actually tried it your self, with your own time and money, and you tell me it is a scam cause you think it is, i will give you a score of a 1.

With that said.
I would like to know if anyone has tried that letter you get in the mail, where everyone helps everyone make money. You send $6 to the six people and then you put your name on the list. At the end of 3 or 4 months you are supposed to make around $800,000. The reason that I want to hear from somone who has done it, is because there are a lot of people who have told me that Melaleuca and The Team and stuff like that are scams and I know first hand that they are not. They just take time, money and dedication. So if anyone has tried this letter thing and it has worked for them I would like to know, cause I will do it. If it doesn't let me know what you did and why it didnt work for you. Thank you for your time.

I hate to waste an answer for this, but as a site administrator, I'd like you to know that if you rate any user a one just for not giving you an answer you want, you can and will be banned.

Ones are for abusive, harmful, and/or illegal advice.
Now, you may rate 2s and any advice that doesn't help you but also isn't illegal, harmful, etc.
3s would be for those who are helpful
4s for those whose advice you take/like
5s for answers/advice that works for you...

I'm just giving you a heads up now that you are threating to abuse our rating system.

At this point, you have TWO options.
You may delete this question and ask it once more (usually against the rules to ask a question more than once, but you have my permission to do so in this case) without including the bit about rating ones for those answers that tell you it's a scam (I will reword your begining portion for you momentarily)

OR you can leave this quesiton (with my response... what you are reading right now) up for all to see.

Although I have the ability to delete this question, I decided I would leave it up to you.

---

If you re-ask this question, you can put THIS at the beginning of your question:

"I want to make this very clear. I am only asking this question to people who have tried this themselves. If you have not actually tried it yourself, with your own time and money, and you tell me it is a scam cause you think it is, I don't want your answer. I want EXPERIENCED answers ONLY".

With that, you have every right to rate a two to users who tell you it's a scam without having personally tried it.

Thanks,
S_C

I am not in school. I have graduated college etc. I was really good in math until I got to Geometry...I was doing fine and then we lost our teacher and my grade went from a b to like a c- and then in Algebra 1, my teacher didn't have time to work with me, then in algebra 2 i lost another teacher and my grade went down drasticly again. I really feel like I could have been good at it if I had the right teacher. I wanted to prove this to myself, so I told someone that works at a school and they gave me an algebra 1 book and I decided to teach my self from the begining. I have decided that if I get at least 1 full grade higher than I did in school, that I am very capable of being good at math. So far I have done 20 questions and have only gotten 1 wrong...that is what my question is about today. This is the questioin:

SUPOSE YOU DEPOSITE $120 IN A SAVING ACCOUNT THAT PAYS AN ANNYAL INTEREST RATE OF 4%. USING THE INTEREST FORMULA I=Prt, HOW MUCH INTEREST WOULD YOU EARN IN 6 MONTHS?

This is the problem...i know how to get the answer to this equation. the answer is $2.40. The thing is the equation that i used to get it is not the one that i am supposed to use. this is what i did...i took $120 and multiplied it by .04 and got $4.80. That would be the interest for the whole year. Then i divided that by 2 (which would equate to 1/2 of a year) and got $2.40.

The problem is that this book does not tell me what "P" is "r" is or "t" is...I just assumed that P is the price $120 and r is the anual interest rate percentage and t is the time it was in there...but when you multiply (120*.04*6) you get $28.80? So can somebody explain to me what the letters in I=Prt stand for and how to get the answer using this specific equation? Thank you!

I know this question is over a month old and that you probably already have the answer, but I came across it in a search and though I would answer you just in case you were still wondering.
Usually,
I is interest
P=principal (also can be initial, etc)
R=rate
T=Time (in YEARS)

That's where your mistake was.
You should have used 1/2 for T, not 6.

Sorry for answering so late.
As I said, I'm sure you have figured out by now.

I've wanted to be an algebra teacher for as long as I can remember and only recently changed my major from math to special education, but I still have math on my brain & still love it, so I knew your mistake the instant I saw this & felt like I had to answer.

16/f dating a 17 yr old. my boyfriend and i have been dating for almost two months now but ive known him forever and im completely in love with him and he loves me. well my mom brought up birth control once before but i kind of blew it off because i didnt think i would need it. i mean my periods are very short and light and i didnt plan on having sex any time soon. but my boyfriend and i have been talking about it lately and i sort of want to with him. im a virgin so im pretty scared about my first time but idk how to ask my mom for birth control again. i dont want her to think im going to go have sex because i dont even know if i want to. but i want to have it on hand just in case. my mom and i arent close at all. we fight entirely too much but i need to have this. how should i ask her ? any advice would help. but please dont tell me im too young for this or anything, i know what the risks are and im prepared to take the responibility. thanks in advance.

xoxo
confused and in love

You have two (well actually, three) options here.

The first, and I'm only going to say it once - don't have sex. Not because you're too young, just because it's an option. Obviously that's not why you asked the question and I'm not going to push it on you. As we all know, in the end it is your decision. If you want to do it, you're going to.

So, your options for getting the birth control:

1. Try and break through to ask your mom. You can lie & tell her that your periods are getting worse and you want birth control. You can be up front and honest and tell her that you've been thinking about having sex and don't plan on doing it just yet but want to make sure you're prepared if you feel the time comes (to be honest with you, birth control doesn't work at its highest until you've been taking it for a while - your body needs to get used to it. This can take anywhere from 1-3 months).

Your second option is actually broken into two parts...
Make yourself a doctor appt. Tell your mom you don't feel well (at 16, I'm sure you don't still have your mom in the room with you while you see the doctor. If you do, ask her to go by yourself. Then you get your birth control prescription that way. The only complicated part of that is that you would have to pay for your birth control (if your mom saw the prescription, she would probably know what it is).
OR
Instead of going to see the doctor, you can probably get a friend to take you (or your boyfriend, or if you drive...) to planned parenthood or the local health department. They can help you, and it's usually free (or very cheap).

Now, my advice is to be honest with your mom. Yeah, she may freak out and want you to break up with him (my mom would throw such a fit & probably try to ground me), but at least you're being honest. And, on the brighter side, if she says no, you can still go to the health department/planned parenthood to get it yourself.

My request to you is not to let any obstacles stop you from getting your birth control. Even thought it's not 100% effective, it's 98-99% when used properly. If you only use a condom (and these are actually my stats from 4 years ago) then it's only 87-97% effective - IF USED PROPERLY!
Both are best. Condoms are one of those last minute things, I've always thought.

So I've had braces on and off for about 5 years and depending on how I gage it, I will have them off near my 17th birthday. Honestly, will I look dumb being in my junior year of HS with braces? Do other people at that age have braces? Are braces even that big of a deal anymore...? Are they that hideous? Do people notice them? I feel really self-conscious now for some reason, I don't know why. Maybe because my other friends are getting their braces off. Am I the only one?

I only got my braces off recently, and I've already graduated from high school.
I'm pretty sure the only reason they took them off is because I'm going to college two hours away, and it's too difficult to schedule appointments and stuff.

I've had my braces from the summer before freshman year in high school until summer before freshman year in college - exactly 4 years.

No, they're not hideous. No, people don't really care anymore. They might notice them, but that's because we all do it - we all look at teeth while people are talking to us.

Don't worry about it. I was on of the last of all my friends to get their braces off. I actually almost miss them. My mouth feels really big when I'm not wearing my retainers. It feels funny and slimy when I touch my teeth - no matter how many times I brush them (just getting used to not having that rough feeling)...

To help you out, though - Nope, you're definitly not the only one. Nobody will care. I was 17 when mine were taken off - less than 6 months until my 18th birthday. Yeah, that was a looong time!

when a girl gets wet does that mean they're pregnant? if not what does it mean

No it does not mean she is pregnant.
All girls get "wet" all the time.
It's our body's natural way of cleaning ourselves in that area.

Usually, if a girl is horny, discharge will come out in heavier amounts (for the purpose of making it easier when you have sex... that's the conclusion I've gained from that, anyway).

No, discharge doens't mean your pregnant.
Yes, it's a natural thing.
If you don't have discharge on a semi regular basis, I'd be somewhat worried.

Hello, im a girl and im 14. Well i really wanna get my tounge pierced but my mom thinks that disgusting. So my questions are: 1. how can i get my mom to let me 2. how much differnt is it? And 3. How long until the swelling and pain go away? Thank you (:

I'm sorry, but this probably won't answer your question the way you want me to.

I'll answer number 1 last.

#2. It's pretty different. You'll end up having a lisp for a long time... until you get used to having it there. One of my friends has had hers in for what seems like an eternity and she still has a lisp.
#3. It didn't take hers too long for the swelling and pain to go away. A week or two, maybe. This really depends on the person, who does it, where at, etc.

Honestly, you coudl easily google the answers to your 2nd & third question.

As for convincing your mom... I'll tell you some ways, but know that in the end, if she wants to say no, then she will. And, if you respect her decision to say no, she may end up thinking how mature & responsible you are and be willing to let you do it for maybe your 16th birthday or something (sorry, but 14 is young for a tongue piercing and sometimes comes across as kind of trashy).
IF THESE ARE TRUE, YOU CAN USE THEM:
1. You're a responsible young adult.
2. They don't look trashy on someone who doesn't make them look trashy. (someone pretty, respectful, responsible, etc.)
3. Would you rather a tongue ring or a baby? (just kidding. that would get you in trouble, probably)

All in all, you should really talk to her like a responsible adult. Explain all of the reasons you want one, and listen to why she doesn't want you to have one.
If you even once say "everyone has it" then you have completely ruined your chances.
Compromise with her. Tell her you'll pay for it and you'll even wait until your 15th or 16th birthday if she'll just let you get one (it's better than waiting until 18 to get it on your own).
And while we all know that there are some trashy piercing places that don't care about age, please refrain from going to one. You'll just prove your immaturity. If you can be responsible and accept her "no", then you'll prove your maturity & even if she won't let you get your tongue done, she may give you more freedoms.

Don't let his friends intimidate you. Just go on up and start talking.
Here are some topics you can talk about:

What movies are coming out
Music, songs, etc.
Summer plans
School, classes, who has what teacher next year.
Upcoming Church activities...
