So I've had braces on and off for about 5 years and depending on how I gage it, I will have them off near my 17th birthday. Honestly, will I look dumb being in my junior year of HS with braces? Do other people at that age have braces? Are braces even that big of a deal anymore...? Are they that hideous? Do people notice them? I feel really self-conscious now for some reason, I don't know why. Maybe because my other friends are getting their braces off. Am I the only one?

DO everythingg your dentist says, like use the rubber bands when he tells you so you can get your braces off earlier. Don't be self-conscious its not that big of a deal, come off confident and you'll eventually feel it. Guys like that. It's okay, your not the only one, don't be scared.

I'm pretty sure the only reason they took them off is because I'm going to college two hours away, and it's too difficult to schedule appointments and stuff.
I've had my braces from the summer before freshman year in high school until summer before freshman year in college - exactly 4 years.
No, they're not hideous. No, people don't really care anymore. They might notice them, but that's because we all do it - we all look at teeth while people are talking to us.
Don't worry about it. I was on of the last of all my friends to get their braces off. I actually almost miss them. My mouth feels really big when I'm not wearing my retainers. It feels funny and slimy when I touch my teeth - no matter how many times I brush them (just getting used to not having that rough feeling)...
To help you out, though - Nope, you're definitly not the only one. Nobody will care. I was 17 when mine were taken off - less than 6 months until my 18th birthday. Yeah, that was a looong time! [ S_C's advice column | Ask S_C A Question ]
