My best friend's 19th birthday is this Friday. I'm only 17, but I want to take her somewhere really fun that night. We live in the Philadelphia area. We're sort of 'wild' girls that are up for anything. Is there any places that we could go that will be full of people and fun? Like any clubs, events, parties that we could both get into? Preferably people that live in or around Philadelphia to answer. (link)

I am sorry this question didn't get answered in time. I hope you two had a blast.
Your question was one of those that prompted me to add the new programs that show questions which desperately need answers. While I am still sorry it didn't get answered I thought you would appreciate knowing that it caused me to change things on the site.
Hopefully when the next birthday comes around, we will be up to helping you out.

i was just wondering if anyone has any insight on freedoms challenge an essay we have to do for school
thanks!! (link)

Hi there,
I saw this in the list of unanswered questions and thought I would ask for some more info. Are you referring to the book: "Freedom's Challenge" by Anne McCaffrey or the general socio-political goal of keeping freedom free? Perhaps something else?
People like to help, but we need more to go on. :-)

Hey DN!
I would really really like to delete my column, because I have no time for it anymore and I just don't want it. Perhaps you can delete it for me? If you can thank you so very much, and if you can't, then what can I do to delete it?
My column name is : iiloveyou
Thank You! (link)
|
Hi there,
Are you sure you don't just want to remove a few answers from your column? I saw something about that in looking at your column.
Just e-mail me a list of answers you would like removed. Dangernerd@gmail.com
If time is your only reason, why not just leave the account for a while. We have people that only come by once or twice a year, and it is no problem.
You have a lot of answers, and I hate to see you give up on all your efforts.
Let me know what I can do to help you continue to be part of the Advicenators family.

Hey, DN! :)
I know you can help me with this.

Howdy Mac,
To the best of my knowledge Gmail does not offer return receipt services.
In fact, after a quick search of the support area at Gmail, it doesn't look like a Gmail return receipt function is even being planned. :-(
Here is a thread which makes it all pretty clear, though it is fairly speculative in nature:
http://groups.google.com/group/Gmail-ABCs/browse_thread/thread/91e27065cba2fe80/f0a6049464f83825?q=return+receipt&rnum=1#f0a6049464f83825
Here is the search I used to find that:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/search.py?query=return+receipt&Action.Search=Search&type=f&lr=lang_en&ctx=en%3Asearchbox
... I hope that answer is to your satisfaction. :-)

Hi there,
The links on the following search go to info on hydrosal gel and purchasing info.
As far as I can tell, outside Canada, you just call the people who make it and order.
Look through the links here, nad you will find what you need:
... if you need anything else, please don't hesitate to write.
DN
P.S. Did you try certain-dri yet? Many, many people have had great success dealing with excessive sweating that way.

Thsi is a dumb question and the people on this site can delete it when atleast one person answers! I clicked Help/FAQ and they said to click the Contact us botton which i can't even find! help plz! (link)

Hi there,
When you go to this page:
http://www.advicenators.com/faq.php
... I need to be able to see exactly what your problem is.
If you know how to do a screen capture, send it to me at the following address:
DangerNerd@gmail.com
... If not, please copy the text on that page, and send THAT to me in an e-mail.
I will help you, but what you have reported has never happened before that I know of, and I haven't found a way to reproduce it here.
Please help me, help you.
Thanks.

Okay, so I downloaded Internet Explorer 7 and it always freezes and randomly closes on me and I was wondering if I went to Add or Remove programs and Removed Internet Explorer 7 from my computer if it would remove Internet Explorer completly from my computer. So I don't know what to do. (link)
|
Hi there,
If you go to add/remove programs, and click the button for IE, it should give you a list of options, one of which should be something like "Roll back to previous version."
Select that, and you will be on your way.
For the people here that say it will remove IE from your machine... they are mistaken. IE is part of the XP operating system. It can be removed, but you have to basically gut your XP installation using special tools.
Like others here, I would suggest you look into using FireFox or Opera. They are both nice browsers.

for some reason whenever i am in school i sweat alot under my arms even when it is cold out. i put deoderante on (duh, im not that dumb) but it still doesnt do anything expect the fact that i dont smell. I think it might be a nerve thing but i was just wondering if there is any product or deoderante just for like wetness (link)
|
Hi there,
This is fairly common, and may be a condition that is known as hyperhidrosis (Sometimes misspelled as hyperhydrosis.)
There are many and varied treatments for it, as well as some very good antiperspirants (certain dri, Hydrosal gel) to get you by for now.
Excessive sweating can be very embarrassing, but it is much easier to live with once you have figured out why it is happening.
A trip to your doctor is in order.
Here is a search to get you started:
Good luck,

For the past 4 months I've been chronically sick. Stomach, head, and breathing problems. Due to other reasons though, but for the past 3 nights my head has felt like its been hit with a 50lb brick multiple times. The pain occurs randomely. It's in the lower part of my head, but above my neck. If I tilt my head side to side my vision becomes blurred, and it hurts even more. The times on how long it stays varies, but its usually around an hour or so. I've tried medication, laying down, rubbing my head, but it just doesnt work. I've had a migraine before and I know that this isnt it. I was wondering if anyone knew of what this might be, and if I should go to the ER, like I was planning on doing. I did have a slight concussion about a month and a half ago, which might have something to do with it. Or maybe it ties in with me chronically being sick for 4 months. If anyones had this happen to them, or knows of any websites, please let me know. (link)
|
Hi there,
You need to get to the ER immediately.
Head trauma is nothing to take chances with. You could have any of a hundred problems going on there, but each and EVERY one of them needs to be seen by a doctor ASAP.
I am dead serious about this: Listen to me, and pay attention:
ANY time moving your head makes your vision blurry, you need to be in the hospital, without exception.
Do NOT drive yourself to the hospital.
If there is nobody there that can take you to the hospital this very second, then you pick up the phone and dial 911 for an ambulance.
Please listen to me. Get off the computer, and go to the hospital. When you get there tell them all the medications you have tried.
I am not a doctor, but I have had head injuries and been around hundreds of them.
Now, and I mean NOW: Tell whoever is there that you need to go to the ER.
If there is nobody that can drive you, right now, you pick up the phone and call for an ambulance.
You need professional medical care, and you need it right this minute.
Please let me know that you are ok when you get back.
Just in case... I will say it again: Go to the hospital NOW. Please.

Hey DN, I thought you might have the answer to this question even though it’s a bit dumb. I recently lost all my data on my USB key. I lent it to my assistant and it came back to me inaccessible and a dialogue box pops up that says “Format the drive now?” or something quite like that. I did a bit of research and a few free programs that claim to be able to retrieve lost data like this but I’m not sure which ones I can trust and I seem to have to format the drive before I can even access it with any of those programs (which makes me a little nervous, I thought formatting deletes everything completely!) Even though I know it is a long shot a few of those files weren’t backed up and I would like to get the best odds possible. Any advice?
- Razhie (link)

Hello Razhie,
I am very sorry to hear about your predicament.
Here are some general tips to avoid a repeat:
Flash memory is actually quite fragile. Anyone you consider loaning a flash drive, should be up to speed on handling static sensitive micro-components, as well as being able to understand that electromagnetic precautions are in order also.
For example, touching the connector without ensuring that you aren't carrying a static charge can render the unit useless. :-(
Here is another one most people don't know: Cell phones/cordless phones can give off tremendous electromagnetic energy. Placing your thumb drive/pen drive next to your mobile phone can result in the drive being scrambled when the phone rings.
What do you do this time?
Well, a word about formatting is in order:
There are three kinds of formatting:
Quick, full and wipe.
Quick format just lays out the markers that the file system uses to decide where to place the data. The actual data on the drive is typically not impacted.
This results in all the files still being there, but the index that says what files are where (so the computer can find them) has been reset to blank.
Full format typically does a quick format, then checks each sector to make sure it is accessible. Some operating systems or utilities will overwrite each sector, and some will just verify that they can READ the sector, thus leaving your data hidden, but intact.
Doing a wipe is a whole different matter. There are several styles or methods for wiping data from hard drives, flash memory cards, floppy disks, etc. Most of these methods involve writing each sector of the drive with a series of values one after the other.
For instance the drive will be written with the value 00 in every sector, then that will be overwritten with AD all the way through, then FF, then 00 again.
The theory is that this will muddle attempts at reading the very faintest magnetic traces of the previous data.
Hopefully, all that will help you to understand that formatting a drive can be fairly harmless to the data itself, just as long as it is a quick format, and you have a utility to recover the files once it is done.
There are utilities that are read-only. Some claim to be able to read media that the computer refuses to address without formatting.
As it sounds like you already have some software in mind, I will wait and see what you were planning on trying.
If you send me a list of utilities I will have a look at them for ones that might be risky for you.
Here is one you can try, which will show you what it can find before you pay anything:
http://www.grandutils.com/Back2Life/index.htm
Please add the names/links of the utilities you were thinking of using, as additional info to this question.
I will check back later tonight to see what else you have added to the question.
Don't get your hopes up too high, but there is a small chance your data may be intact.
Hoping the best for you,
DN.

I have an older tablet PC that will not run the latest version of OpenCanvas, and while the free version 1 is alright, I would appreciate some of the features that were added later on. I have found 3.05E (which is shareware), but it crashes a lot. I thought this might be the tablet not meeting the system requirements, so I thought I would go back a version or two, but I can't find any earlier version except for 1. Can you help me find any versions between 1 and 3.05? I don't mind if they are shareware, the project I am working on shouldn't take more than a week at the most. I have been told 3.02 is one of the most stable versions, and if you could find the plus version (which handles screentones) I would appreciate it very much. (link)
|
Hello there,
I understand your predicament. Here is a link to the internet archive page where I found a working 3.03 download. This has download link for oC 3 as well as oC3 plus.
http://web.archive.org/web/20031206195941/www.portalgraphics.net/en/oc/oc3/download.html
All the previous versions seem to pre-date the English version of the portal graphics site.
Since I don't read Japanese, I cannot tell you about earlier versions. If you can read Japanese you should go here:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.portalgraphics.net/
... and try earlier versions of the site.
I would like to see what you are working on, if you wouldn't mind. :-)
You can reach me here: dangernerd@gmail.com
Let me know how you do,
DN.
P.S. There are also many other programs you might wish to look into. Look here:

... to see if something else suits you, should all else fail.

Hi, hope someone can help. When I attempt to log on to my bank site, the session immediatly times out and logs me off. The tech person at the bank says the problem is from my end, and is probably my browser settings. This suddenly started happening 2-3 weeks ago and I haven't been able to log on since. This is what I have tried with no avail: I have changed the cookie settings to accept all, to accept none. I turned off the firewall. I uninstalled some windows updates, thinking it happened after that time. I have changed the security settings to low. I cleared the browser cache. I increased the days for the history. Nothing is working and I am desperate because I do all my banking online. I can log in from my computer at work, but I am not supposed to use it for personal work, so really it is on my end. Please Help. (link)
|
Hello there,
Having experienced this personally, I understand the frustration. Recently, Microsoft put out a security "patch" which kills access to most sites using any kind of encryption.
The result? Exactly what you would expect. You, and many others, can no longer access your on-line banking sites.
As Spacefem already mentioned, you should download and install the FireFox browser, if you haven't already. Once you have that taken care of, try your on-line banking, credit union, or whatever else in FireFox... I bet it will work just fine.
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
If you are a victim of Microsoft "fixing" things, then head over here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813444
... for the step by step troubleshooting walk-through from Microsoft.
In conclusion, it is best to START by making sure that it is a fault in IE, by installing FireFox:
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
... Once you have verified that it is IE, you should make sure you have visited windows update again, JUST in case they have a new patch which, when installed, fixes your problem.
If not, go through the troubleshooter:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813444
If you cannot reach your bank through FireFox, test your SSL security settings.
How do you test and see if your security settings are at fault? Go here:
http://www.verisign.com/advisor/check.html
... follow the steps and see what it tells your about your settings.
If all else fails, ask me another question with the results of your ordeal so far, and I will do my best to assist you.

hi, i suffer from panic attacks and recently my stomach has been knotting up. are there any safe exercises that i can do to destress myself? any advice would be gratefully received (link)

I have heard good things about this:
Overcoming Panic Attacks -- Ray comfort
http://www.livingwaters.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=142
Read the testamonials and see what you think.
"What my therapist couldn't do in thirty-plus visits, this book did for me in one sitting."
Evelyn Spence
"I am 13 years old and I had been having panic attacks over the last few months. They are the most scary things I have endured in a long time, but then I heard about, Overcoming Panic Attacks. I bought the book and since reading the book and applying what it says I have not had a panic attack for over a month now."

Let me know how you do.

is it weird for a girl to have hair in her butt crack? (link)
|
Not weird at all.
I little fuzzy is completely normal for everyone. If your heritage is from certain countries you may have more hair than others.
If it looks like there is a wookie following you, or you are wearing a a pair of fuzzy shorts when you are naked, you might have a problem... otherwise you are perfectly fine. :)

Basically, I became a level 1 moderator yesterday. I think it is so much fun, and I was wondering how often do you make a level 1 moderator into a level 2? Do you 'promote' people by how many times they have rated questions. (sorry, i couldn` find this on the FAQ) Thanks for reading this. (link)

We generally promote people who read the FAQ... ;-)

My computer does this thing where everything on the screen gets pink tinge to it. It only started recently, and usually only lasts a little while so I ignore it. But now it's doing it and it won't go away. It's really irritating because I can't see things properly, I've tried changing all the settings but it doesn't seem to help. Is there anything I can do? (link)
|
Hello there,
Check the monitor cable. GENTLY wiggle the cable where it connects to your video card (back of the computer) then at the back of the monitor.
Be sure to watch the screen while doing this to see if it changes while you are manipulating the cable.
The other thing to do, if you can, is to hook the monitor up to another computer.
If it doesn't do it on the other machine, then you may have a faulty video card in your computer.
If that isn't it, and you have reset the monitor to factory settings already, then it is time to start shopping for a new monitor... unless this one is under warranty.
I don't know if you have a LCD flat panel monitor or CRT monitor, but if you have a CRT, this would be a good time to switch to LCD.
Let me know how you make out with all of this.

It says you answer computer questions so I'm hoping you'll be able to help me...
My printer isn't working; it keeps telling me that my printer spooler (whatever that is) is turned off. How do I turn it on? (link)
|
Hi there,
The print spooler is the little program that sucks in what you are printing an feeds it to the printer as fast as it can take it, without making your whole computer wait until the print job is done.
Something may have crashed the print spooler. If so, this is usually fixed when you re-start your computer.
If not, it is more serious.
The print spooler, if you are using Windows, sits down by your clock in the system tray (when it is working.)
You may have turned off the spooler service by accident... but this is very unlikely.
If you did, I need to know the rest of the info at the bottom of this answer before I can help further, since the instructions for checking this are different for the various operating systems you might be using.
The print spooler can give that error by mistake even when something else is wrong.
With some printers, when they aren't plugged in right, are out of ink, have a paper jam or just about anything else.
Check all the usual things:
Make sure you cycle the power on the printer and the computer.
Check the ink.
Check the paper.
Check the cables.
Check for a little printer icon in the system tray when you try to print. If it is there, double click it, and see if there is any additional information.
Hopefully you will have this fixed by now.
If you still have problems, make sure to abide by the cardinal rules of asking for computer help: GIVE ALL THE INFO! :-)
Ask again telling:
What kind of printer you have
What kind of computer you have
What version of Windows (or whatever) you run
... so that I, and maybe others, can help you better.
I will move this question to the public pool, in hopes someone else might have additional insights.

My sister got my parents an ipod for CHristmas. She bought a bunch of songs on ITUNES and set it up on her laptop. She installed ITUNES on my parents computer but they are locked out of ITUNES. I can not find a number at Apple to call, do you know how they can get access to their ITUNES?
thank you (link)
|
Hi there,
Please set up a free account here and ask this question to the pool. That way everyone can help.
As for me, I don't use iTunes.
A somewhat lengthy search of the apple sight brought me to a page, which has a contact form for Apple, which should make it fast and easy to contact Apple about your iPod and iTunes issues both now and later.
This is the page which tells all about authorizing different computers to be able to play the same music in iTunes:
http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/musicstore/authorization/
Here is a video iTunes tutorial than should help with the above iPod info:
http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/itunes/it3-5.html
In the future, it would be a lot easier if she just bought the iTunes music on your parent's computer itself. I am sure you could sneak it in without them knowing. :-)
I hope this helps.
Remember, if this helped you, please help others.

You should immediately tell your parents.
If you are in pain, and you set a 10 minute time limit on responses, you need to go to the emergency room.
If 10 minutes is how long you can wait, then you have an emergency.
Tell your parents, and go to the doctor.
Nobody here is a doctor. We can't possibly tell you what is wrong, so please don't ask these things here.
Just to be clear: If you are this worried, you need to see a doctor. NOW!
