Musically Challenged

Question Posted Thursday April 21 2005, 9:07 pm

My friends and I are trying to get this one boy from my classical music class to start to appreciate rock music and rap music, pop music etc. He isn't responding to most of it and is giving answers to rap music like, "You don't know what he's saying!!" Is there an easy way to introduce him to this type of music?

Some people have different outlooks on what music is, and what type of music they like. He may just not have a place in him for rock/rap/pop. But if you dont want to give up then i would basically just show him similarities between the people... :)

Introducing people to music can be hard. I would suggest introducing him to some light pop, maybe JoJo or someone like that. If you want to introduce him to Rap try light rap... Not Eminem or anyone like that but someone who raps about life, not drugs or sex... Maybe TuPac...

Good Luck

I've always adored classical music. But I love may other types of music too. The only way he'll come to appriciate a new kind of is if he wants to spend the time to emerce himself in it. If he takes the same kind of care listening to a new type of music that he does classical, he will find something he likes. He won't like everything, and I personally have TRIED to like mainstream country for my parents' sake and still hate it, and lite jazz (ugg). Tell him he needs to learn to separate the layers of the music he is listing to the same way he would a classical piece. Just half listening will accomplish nothing. The surface of music is not where he will find the things he needs to develop a true opinion. I can think of no better way to explain it, but maybe he'll understand.

umm i dont think you are going to like this but you cant make someone like a type of music. its like trying to make someone like a type of food they hate. i hate rap and i dont think anyone can change that. and cant you try to understand WHY he doesnt appriciate it? they can't play instruments AND they don't sing. classical music (although i dont like it) seems like it should appreciated more than rap because it takes more talent

sorry if thats not the answer you looking for but yeah

I don't think that there really is an "easy" way to introduce a person to new music. It's good that you’re trying to help introduce someone to new types of music. The fact is though, he may not ever be receptive to new music and he may never be into the same music you like. The best thing to do is to keep trying to show him different types of music and artists (as long as he agrees to it) and he may find a few that he likes. Good luck!

hmmm .... have him listen to rap that is easier to understand than most rap songs. also if youve tried to have him like this music for a while, i would say dont push it. but its worth a try :) who knows? you could open a new door for him!

if you rate you'll probably give me a bad rating for this.. i dont care.. but.. you cant really change what people like.. but if you wanted to try you could maybe start out with slower songs. and then work your way up to the heavier music.

people relate to music in all different ways. maybe something in his music gives this guy the chills, or makes him feel understood, just like rap/rock/pop may do for you. its good to be exposed to other kinds of music, but for the most part, music is incredibly personal. let him listen to whatever he wants.

Sporkster answered Thursday April 21 2005, 9:51 pm:
He likes his music just like you like yours. He has the right to like or dislike anything he wants to, so just leave him alone. I mean, he could Appalachian Mountain-hick banjo-geetar moosic and he would still have the right to like it. It's fine, I guess, to "introduce" him to it, but don't force anything on him. The beauty of the freedoms of choice...

Well take me for example, I didnt appriciate rap music untill i listened to mockingbird by eminem. Then i loved it and started listening to other rap songs. ((Mockingbird you can actually understand unlike the other songs)) So introduce him to that song and like someone said burn him a cd with songs on it you like and he will gradually start liking the music and listen to it more and more. Good luck.

Like everyone else says, people can like what they like; just because you like something doesnt mean everyone has to or is going to like it. Let the poor kid be.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There's nothing wrong with classical, just leave the boy be.

You can't make him like something that he doesn't want to. If he likes classical music, then let him stay liking classical music. There is nothing wrong with that. Some poeple just don't like rap, pop, etc. I have a friend that doesn't listen to music at all. But I can't change him. And you can't change that boy.
Hope I helped!
