I'm not anorexic- am I?

Question Posted Sunday February 27 2005, 9:31 am

I'm a thirteen year old female. Recently Iv'e started eating super healthy. When I'm at home eating the food there, or eating foods with nutrition information I'm fine, but whenever I eat at someone else's house or eat out and the food served looks fattening or sugary I panic. I don't know whats in it and so on. Sometimes I make up excuses for not eating things. My friends jokingly said I was anorexic before. That didn't bother me. However, now they have started to say it seriously and my own mum said I was eating in an anorexic way. I know people suffering from anorexia have poor self image, but I think I am at a perfect weight. Please tell me if I am anorexic or not. Honestly.

Plain and simple... if you are eating, then you aren't anorexic.

Your at the first stage of it, thats how i started, you start realizing everything that goes in your body, and constantly counting carbs, and fat. Doode, your thirteen, stop worrying about it, you said your self your at the perfect weight. If your worried about gaining wieght, eat healthy still, but work out, and wen you want to endulge on sweets, you can do it without worrying, you could go to the gym or just jog a couple miles a few tiems a week. Trust me if you start worryin about all this now, wen you get a lil older, its going to get really bad..so fix it now!

No, I don't think that you are. You don't sound like you have anorexia symtoms, anyway.
I think that you might be a little obsessed with what you eat, and that's OK, but try and be a little LESS obsessive if that's possible.
If you think that you are a perfect size and you are eating healthily (and not skipping meals) then what you're doing is actually admirable.
Good luck,

if you think you are at a perfect weight, that means you don't seem anorexic...most girls say they are fat..its good if you eat in a healthy way...i should be more like that...but it's ok to eat something and not worry about what's in it every now and then...especially if you are at a perfect weight..

PrincezzMari answered Sunday February 27 2005, 1:31 pm:
honestly, i don't really think you're anorexic. as long as you're EATING ( at least 3 times a day and healthy portions) you're fine. however, i think you should stop worrying so much about that sugar and stuff. a little bit of sugary sweets it ok here and there, and it won't exactly make you gain like 30 pounds or something if you eat at your friends' houses every once in a while cuz if you say you're the perfect weight, a big mac can't do you much harm! so, you're not anorexic. keep eating healthy (that's good!), and it's ok to eat at mcdonald's every once in while though ( to make people stop talking about you and to stop any possible, if any, chances of becoming anorexic, which seems pretty unlikely.) i hope i helped!!!:D

Just because you've turned into a total health freak (like myself) does NOT mean you're anorexic. You still eat, right? Ok then. As long as you're at least TRYING to down two to three good meals a day you're fine.

i have looked up some websites and i found that this one comsumerReportsHealth.org has very helpful information but in case you dont want to look at it here is some other information i found

-anorexic people see themselves as being overly heavy
-they avoid foods or meals
-pick out a few foods and eat them in small quantities

as you say you dont see yourself as being overly heavy you see yourself as a perfect weight so that is a good thing. Seeing yourself as overweight when you are actually deadly skinny is the main sign that you are anorexic so i by what you say i do not think that you are anorexic...maby you are just thin and like to watch your food intake...hope i helped <33 ~Danni

Honestly no. Or at least I don't think so. You should eat wherever you go but you should eat healthy. There is nothing wrong with that. Tell your friends and family to stop calling you anorexic. If you are still realy worried ask your parents to bring you to a doctor and let him check you out. I hope I helped! ♥ good luck

It doesnt sound like you are anorexic. But just to be sure look at some of the signs of anorexia. If you have been loosing a lot of weight in a short period of time, and if you are are really hungry but dont eat, there is a chance that you are getting anorexic. Just keep eating healthy and you'll be fine. Hope my advice helps! ♥ Jenn

Wow, I don't know how I can top Mandee's answer, but I don't think you're anorexic. My opinion might matter since I used to be anorexic. Some doctors will also consider anorexia being severly underweight, not just the whole not eating factor. You might have some type of eating disorder, but anorexia isn't it. You might want to talk to your doctor about your eating phobia. I think that's what it is, more of a fear of eating unhealthy foods. Truly, no, not anorexia. But yes, some type of food phobia, or some other type of eating disorder. I would definitley talk to a parent or councilor or doctor to see what you can do about your phobia.

Mandee answered Sunday February 27 2005, 9:55 am:
Honestly, I don't know because I would need a little more detail. But I do believe that you are on the borderline of an eating disorder. Let me ask you this, why did all of a sudden you start to eat healthy if you think you're at a perfect weight? Why would you stop your eating habits now, if you're fine with how you look? Some people become anorexic, and they don't even mean to, but most of the time, they do.

It scares me that you said you panic because if you're at someone's house or a restaurant you don't know what exactly is in the food you're eating. And that is taking it too far.

Usually, it starts out with a new, healthy diet, or eating approach. And it's like you have to know every single calorie in every food, and know what the food contains. But then you'll start being obsessed with calorie, cutting them out until eventually there's nothing left. That's normally the case.

I think it's important for you to know the symptoms of anorexia and decide for yourself if you have it. I can't do that for you because I don't know what applies to you and what doesn't, I just took a realistic guess.

Anorexia Nervosa has four primary symptoms:

Resistance to maintaining body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height
Intense fear of weight gain or being “fat” even though underweight.
Disturbance in the experience of body weight or shape, undue influence of weight or shape on self-evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of low body weight.
Loss of menstrual periods in girls and women post-puberty.

Warning Signs of Anorexia Nervosa:

Dramatic weight loss.
Preoccupation with weight, food, calories, fat grams, and dieting.
Refusal to eat certain foods, progressing to restrictions against whole categories of food (e.g. no carbohydrates, etc.).
Frequent comments about feeling “fat” or overweight despite weight loss.
Anxiety about gaining weight or being “fat.”
Denial of hunger.
Development of food rituals (e.g. eating foods in certain orders, excessive chewing, rearranging food on a plate).
Consistent excuses to avoid mealtimes or situations involving food.
Excessive, rigid exercise regimen--despite weather, fatigue, illness, or injury--the need to “burn off” calories taken in.
Withdrawal from usual friends and activities.
In general, behaviors and attitudes indicating that weight loss, dieting, and control of food are becoming primary concerns

Health Consequences of Anorexia Nervosa:

Abnormally slow heart rate and low blood pressure, which mean that the heart muscle is changing. The risk for heart failure rises as heart rate and blood pressure levels sink lower and lower.
Reduction of bone density (osteoporosis), which results in dry, brittle bones.
Muscle loss and weakness.
Severe dehydration, which can result in kidney failure.
Fainting, fatigue, and overall weakness.
Dry hair and skin, hair loss is common.
Growth of a downy layer of hair called lanugo all over the body, including the face, in an effort to keep the body warm.

(By the way, these symptoms of anorexia can be found at www.nationaleatingdisorders.org)

Take care of yourself, babe. And be careful!

Love,
Mandee

Karen answered Sunday February 27 2005, 9:38 am:
You aren't anorexic at all, you just have poor eating ways and habits. It's alright to eat foods that are sort of fat, but just watch what you eat and exercise when you get home so you won't feel as though if you have gained weight. If you are anorexic, you basically don't eat at all and it takes time to become anorexic. You eat while you are at home so you aren't anorexic. If you don't want to eat at someone's home besides your's, why don't you bring a healthy snack with you so you can eat that if you don't want to eat their food? Just tell your friends and your mom that you aren't anorexic, you just have poor eating habits. I used to be just like you but now I am eating more often, in a healthy way. Just ignore your friends and your mother's opinions about you and things will get better.

Anorexic..well have you been losing weight? It sounds like maybe your just eating a little waay to healthy. Im glad you have a good self image because thats a good sign that your not anorexic. If you have a good self image and you havent been losing weight..then i dont think your anorexic. You just have to stop panicing about the greasy food Try and ease up on the super healthy stuff. Its good to eat healthy like you are..but dont be afraid to splurge once in awhile with something thats greasy.
