I do not understand IP addresses at all. What are they for? How can you track someone through them? I know everyone has one and they are used for internet purposes. I just don't know what purposes or why someone would want to know someone else's. This all arose when I saw something that said when you go in the advicenators chatroom (I believe using the CGI thing) everyone can see it. I wasn't sure if that was good or bad. So can someone please explain to me what this is for?

You can do a whois lookup on http://www.arin.net/whois/ and it will tell you what ISP they're using... This is often used to track down spammers...

for AIM buddy icons.. i downloaded animation shop and paint shop pro.. but my free trials expired. i`ve tried removing the program but when i download again it says it`s already present on my computer. it`s driving me crazy not being able to make icons. is there any way i can download free trials or different programs? or is there any way to completely erase them from my computer so i can get the free trial again? please help!

You can change the date on your computer or delete the registries that tell the program that you've already had your trial (I don't know which ones though, try searching for sites that tell you how to do that, and be warned that if you delete the wrong registry you can seriously mess up your computer)

You can also try the GIMP (download at http://www.gimp.org/ for free) and GIF construction set professional (download at http://www.mindworkshop.com for a trial that never expires, although you get an annoying count down that reminds you to register it every time you open it and close it)

My computer is having some issues with right clicking, and clicking links that create a new internet explorer window to open. When I right click on a link, all the options come up, but when I select "open a new window" nothing pops up, and the original window just freezes and then I get annoyed and close it. Even my msn is acting screwy, it tells me I have however many new emails, but when I click on it, nothing pops up.

I've run a virus scan, have a firewall, and ad aware, so none of that appears to be the issue. Any help?

Sounds like that the Shift button on your keyboard is stuck... Press that a few times and see if it's still like that...

I want to buy the expansion pack for the Sims 2... it's called University. However, I'm not sure if I have enough space on my computer... how can I tell if I do or don't?

To check whether you have space or not, click on "My Computer" on your Desktop, then right click your C drive and choose "Properties". Unless you have installed a lot of other programs, you should have enough space. If your C drive is really small (less than 20GB total capacity), look in "My Computer" to see if you have other partitions on the computer.

Buy one or two things to see how it goes... As far as I know, Asian sizes are usually quite small...

It's an animation that changes the words to the faded colour... You can use any animation program to make that... For example, you can use GIF Construction Set Professional (download from http://www.mindworkshop.com)

I use MSN Messenger everyday and usually have no problems with it. Yesterday I was using it as normal when suddenly I was unable to view the emoticons. I can send them and other people can see them on their computers but I can't see them, only the code that you use to type them. Is there any way I can fix this problem?

My friend made a Flash movie and I am doing the voice acting for one of the characters. The character has one line, which has to be said very quickly, loudly and forcefully. Every time I say this line into my microphone and listen to it there is a little static "explosion" on the hard consonants. Short of getting a new microphone, what can I do to lessen this?

Don't put the microphone too close to your mouth.
Make sure the volume of your microphone isn't too high.
(Volume Control > Options > Properties > Choose "Recording", press "OK" > You should see a slider that allows you to adjust the volume)

Just recently, my family purchased a computer mouse that was the laser optical type.


I've only used the rolling ball type, so this is all new to me.


But every 5-7 minutes or so, my arrow on the screen with jump toards the side bottoms. Is this normal for this type of mouse? If not, what can i do to stop the skipping around. I'm not even pressing remotely in the way it randomly jumps.

What colour is your desk? If it's dark then put a piece of white paper under your mouse...

I have spyware on my computer and I went to my add/remove programs and saw "SearchAssistant" and thats what usally gives me the spyware.. so when I clicked "Remove", nothing happened. I clicked it several times and yeah no luck. Any other ways I can take it off my computer? I rate 5's!

I have music playlist on my Xanga and when I go to it I can hear the music just fine. But when my friend goes to it she said she couldn't hear it. Does anyone know what might be going on? Would anybody be willing to go to my Xanga site to see if it is just her computer or what?

Well, we can't go to your Xanga site if you don't give us the link... What file format is your music in? Your friend's browser might not have the appropriate plugins, for example, if it's a RealMedia file you will need RealPlayer... Also, if you have a drop down playlist, it probably won't work in non-IE browsers because of the proprietary code...

There are also tracking cookies which can be bad because they allow sites to get your information... I was looking at others advice columns and noticed that a lot of people have more than one photo onto their column page, I was trying to figure out how that was done and it didn't work, could someone help me with this, specific directions if possible. Fives will be given to those who answer the question.

First, have the photo uploaded. (go to http://www.photobucket.com if you need a host)
After you upload the photo, put <img src="image URL"> in the "Describe yourself or your column or whatever else you want the world to know:" box in Profile Settings. Replace "image URL" with the actual URL of your photo.
If you have your own custom style (if you have a paid account or if you created one before the paid account system started) you can put that anywhere on the page.
