why was advicenators down for a while? (link)
|
This site, along with other sites also run by Spacefem, is HUGE!
That said, we out-grew our previous host.
So... we had to find a new one. And the first one we thought we found was a sack of shit and the deal went south really quickly. So, we had to find yet another host...
...so now we have our brand new host on our brand new server. And as such, servers cost money - this site is hardly "free"... so, like buy stuff: http://www.cafeshops.com/advicenators,advicenators2,advicenators3
But yeah... the whole debacle took some time, and not many people here probalby knew all the outlets to stay informed (like, going to the chat room, because sometimes, people are in there, and we know stuff... )

My parent's 25th anniversary is coming up. They are going on vacation and everything, but does anyone have any suggestions on what I could get them? (link)
|
that's always a toughy... myself, my brother, and my sister, along with a few other relatives, chipped in to get my parents a new camcorder for their 25th. Things like cameras (digital this day and age), picture collages of the family, etc... all good things. It just depends on how much money you are able to put towards it.

Hey! I have this challenge thingy set by our teacher and it has a load of riddles on it. I'm really stuck on this certain one, please could you help with this one?
Three men have dinner together. The bill comes up to $30. The men each put down $10, which the waitress takes to the owner who says: They didn't have a very good deal, take $5 off the bill. The waitress is distressed at having to divide $5 by three so she pockets $2 and returns $1 to each man. So they end up paying $27 and she gets $2, this adds up to $29. But the diners orginally paid $30. Where is the extra dollar? (link)
|
*cough cough* really old *cough cough*
$30 paid - $5 taken off the bill = $25.
$25 + $2 in the waitress's pocket + 3 x $1 back to each guy = $30
There is no missing dollar. Just deceptive wording on behalf of the "riddle".

My mother and I went to Sam's Club where you can buy everything in bulk, including a one gallon jug of syrup. When we got home the syrup jug had cracked open and spilled all over the inside of my trunk. We tried our best to scoop up what we could, but it is just soaked into the carpet, and is really sticky. My car smells like a pancake house! What can I do to clean up this mess? (link)
|
oh my... that really sucks...
You will probably have to get the carpet cleaned with either a regular carpet cleaner, or have a cleaning service do it for you. Syrup is thick enough, add to it the sugars and flavour elements and with it soaked in, that's just a bear and a half to try to clean by any conventional means.
Steam cleaning is most likely your best bet. Worst case would be having to shell out $500 or so to get new carpet, but I think that syrup is cleanable (unlike spilling Thompon's Water Seal, which also dissolves the carpet).
p.s. - be careful using any solvents to clean the carpet, as many solvents can dissolve the capet fibers.

What is the best kind of RAM to get for a computer. I have a AMD Athlon processor, 40G, 240 RAM computer. I want to put another strip of RAM into it because its been running slow. I think its the longest standard RAM you can get, but i dont know how many pins it is. Give me all the information you can about this please. (link)
|
How old is your system? Odds are, you need some form of DDR or SDram. Pin type was for older systems, when you had to know if you needed 30, 60, or some other pin config for SIMMs. Current memory are DIMMs. SIMMs had to be installed in pairs. DIMMs do not. Being that you have an Athlon, you most likely need some form of DIMM. The exact type depends on your motherboard. If you go to Micron's site www.crucial.com they have great menus that can walk you through finding out exactly what memory you need to buy. You might need regular SDram, PC100, PC133, some form of DDR, or (god forbid) RAMBUS shit. But it is all dependent on the motherboard you are using.

okay. my computer hasn't been working for about a week so i'm not a level 1 moderator anymore. i know why i am not, but now i don't have a rating either! why don't i? i answer like around 140 questions. and before, when my computer worked, i had a rating of like 4.56 or something. So the question is: Why don't i have my rating anymore? Thanks so much!

the site was down for about a week... thus, everyone lost mod status because of how the site runs itself. All you have to do is update your column as usual, and you'll get L1 mod status back.

I am going to start fencing because our university has a fencing club and I have always been interested in sowrd play so it is a logical decision. At any rate, my question is this. Should I start with an epee, a foil, or a saber? (link)
|
Many people start with foil. I started with epee. Foil is generally your starting weapon as it is piercing only. Epee is the first bladed fencing sword, thus introduces slashing. Saber is just bizarre (well, not really, but it doesn't seem as straight forward as epee and foil).
If you have to buy your own equipment, I believe that foils are cheaper than epees...

Ok, im 7ft tall, and of course a guy. It seems like every time i approach a girl shes always so afraid of me. She never wants to talk to me and hold a convo. w/ me. When people do talk to me, they always ask how tall i am, then sit and stare. Why are girls so afraid of me? and how do you suggest i cure this problem, and maybe advise on how to keep the convo going w/o it dropping off at how big my feet are. (link)

Have you tried to make light of your height? If you think people are falling into the whole "awe" factor, make light of your physical stature... I knew a priest who was 6'8" - I think its fair to say that he was well over the average height for a priest... anyway, his nickname was Fr. Stretch. He would up-front tell people, "and so you don't have to ask, yes, I do play basketball. And the weather up here is fine." He say it with a grin and usually that was enough to get people to realize that, hey, he's a person, too!
Basically, but cutting people off and letting them know that you're well aware of your height, usually that's enough to make them realize that there are other things to talk about.
(On the other side of things, I walked up to a friend of mine one day and said, "Hey, you know what? You're tall." To which she replied, "Holy shit, when did that happen?" And then we went about our day like nothing had happened, leaving the others in the room somewhat baffled.)

Are there such things as a Junior Olympics? This girl on my basketball team claims she went to Athens for the Olympics, and since she's only 13/14 she would be too young to play for the USA Junior/Regular Woman's basketball olympic teams. My brother says that there is probably one for kids, but it's only a sideshow and no one really talks about it. I don't disagree but I just want to check it out and see if there was one... (link)
|
Yes, there is JO. No, I do not think that any JO players went to Athens... mainly because JO has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OLYMPICS. I still have no idea how they got permission to use the name.
JO teams are run nationally, and they have local and national tournaments. In our area, it is mainly volleyball. AAU covers most of basketball. I forget who runs the equivalent organization for baseball and soccer.
JO is not the olympics. It is sports, and it is for junior high and high school.

k.. im a freshman, and i like a junior.
my friend to the guy i liked him and told him she would show me to him and then he would decide if he wanted to talk to me or not.
I really like this guy. And i dunno wut to do. Cause wut if he says im fugly or something. I dunno wut i would do. But i dont want that to happen.
Hes gonna meet me on friday n i wanna kno wut i should do and wut i should act like and how i should look and if he does wanna talk to me what to talk about.
Thanks soo much!
*Confused n Scared* (link)
|
Well, you should act like yourself, otherwise you'd be trying to fool him, and that never works.
What should you say? Well, you should find out about the things he likes - and talk about what you have in common with him.

how many boyfriends have you had? i'm doing something with the infomation so be honest. (link)

You're going to have to make a decision and choose what's more important to you. I suspect that the dance school's goal is to prepare you for a career in dancing, and will not exactly be pleased with the sports (of course, I could be wrong on that, so use your judgement there).
I understand your desire to do many things, but making a commitment to a dance school as such means deciding to concentrate your life in that direction. If that's not really something you want to do, you need to realize this soon.
EDIT: You don't get it, do you? You have hit a point in your young life when you will be FORCED to make a choice. And that choice might mean quitting things. It is part of growing up. Get used to it.

What is beauty? (link)
|
Beauty is a subjective property.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
No two people will agree on the same things as being equally attractive.
There is beauty in most everything - some things are readily apparent, others are well hidden from the naked eye, but can be realized in other ways.
Beauty is looked for and yet easily overlooked.
Beauty is sought, but oft misunderstood.

Recently, i found my dad constantly going to chatrooms and talking to random ppl like he likes them better than my mom. every day he would be doing this but once my mom got home, he would close out of them. i dont know what to do. my brother knows about it too, but i dont know if i should tell my mom. please help....:( (link)
|
How do you know that he likes these people better than your mom - how are you coming to that conclusion.
If he's chatting until your mom gets home, couldn't that just mean that your dad realizes that he should go spend time with her and get out of the chats?
Really, I don't see the big deal here. I chat with "random" people all the time. I also spend craploads of time with my wife and kids. I also chat with my brother, sister, and cousins on-line. I'll talk to people I've met on websites, and I've gone so far as to help people with homework on-line.
I just recommend caution so that you don't read too mcuh into a situation that might not even exist. People are social animals - we talk to each other all the time, be it on-line or in person.

Selectopaque here again. I'm still not a moderator, I figured I would at least be a level one by now, but no luck. Is it no longer automatic, or is it just my column? Anything that can be done about it? (link)
|
odd... should be automatic. I'll check with spacefem to make sure the automation is working properly. Might just be a time issue, too.
|
all my life i had never had a boyfriend and i thought it was me but 3 days ago my brother finally confessed. he told me that he told all the boys i like not to go out with me, its a rule not to go out with my sister. hes 17 and i'm 13. y does my brother want to........... y did my brother ruin my life? (link)
|
he's being over-protective... he'll get over it... you're only 13 so you've got lots of time ahead of you.
|
alot of people think that i'm bi polar. i get mood swings like you would not believe... for instance today i was having a great time in algebra and then i walked out of the classroom so pissed off and i was like biting everyones head off. i had major depression for 2 years but then i got over it and i was okay up until about maybe a month or 2 ago when people started saying that i had moodswings and within the last month alot of people said that i might be bipolar. could this be possible? should i see a doctor? i don't want to worry my mom again because when i had major depression that was like a really bad time for my entire family. what should i do? (link)
|
It is probably worth talking to a doctor to see if they think any further steps should be taken, if any at all.
|
i am in love wit a guy that is 3 years older then me. is a big difference? well my parents dont want me talkin to him anymore. i talk him on the phone everyday. my parents think i should talkin to him perminently but i cant. i love this guy but i cant tell my parents that bc they think i am to young to have a bf. it is like i am 13 i should be able to have a bf. But they wont let me. what do u guyz think i should i really need ur help!! (link)
|
the age gap between 13 and 16 is actually quite large... odds are, it will be a very bad relationship - either he's immature, and/or will attempt to take advantage of your naivete.
And... if you want your parents to see things differently, you need to prove to them you're mature enough to have a boyfriend - and that is no easy task.

Hey....
For Honors English(I'm a Freshman)..we have to write 3 short stories by Thursday. I need 2 more stories..and I was wondering what are some good topics and story starters? Plz help! Ne ideas would be greatly appreciated! THANKS SO MUCH!! (link)
|
standard archtypes: man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. machine. Good vs. Evil. Transcendentalism - finding higher meaning in life. Satire - poke fun at things like current events. Absurdist - a story that goes totally off the deep end.
Apply characters as you see fit.

If you don't feel comfortable going with him, either say no, or work it out so that you go with another couple.
