a riddle Hey! I have this challenge thingy set by our teacher and it has a load of riddles on it. I'm really stuck on this certain one, please could you help with this one?
Three men have dinner together. The bill comes up to $30. The men each put down $10, which the waitress takes to the owner who says: They didn't have a very good deal, take $5 off the bill. The waitress is distressed at having to divide $5 by three so she pockets $2 and returns $1 to each man. So they end up paying $27 and she gets $2, this adds up to $29. But the diners orginally paid $30. Where is the extra dollar?

Haha wow, confusing..But everyone else seemed to answer it pretty well =P ]
I have a dollar... ]
Very clever little word game. But it's just being tricky! They did, indeed end up paying 27, but then they mention that she kept 2$ and that adds up to 29. Umm... no because the 2 is already added to get 27. They paid 30, she takes out 5, so they paid 25 plus the 2 she kept is 27 plus the 3 she gave them back (1 each) is 30. ]
There is no extra dollar. ]
...What the smart people said.

I see where this is really confusing:
If they each pay $10 and each get back $1, they each pay $9.
$9 x 3 = $27
$27 plus the waitress $2 = $29
MFS, your answer makes sense, but my math makes sense too. I don't get it! ]
It's pretty simple. I've been asked that before. 2+3+25=30. The 2 dollars she gets is apart of the 27 dollars they pay. Your teacher is asking you to add the 2 dollars she kept twice. You add the 3 dollars they keep to 27 to get 30. ]
*cough cough* really old *cough cough*
$30 paid - $5 taken off the bill = $25.
$25 + $2 in the waitress's pocket + 3 x $1 back to each guy = $30
There is no missing dollar. Just deceptive wording on behalf of the "riddle". ]
