Question Posted Thursday September 16 2004, 11:35 am
My mother and I went to Sam's Club where you can buy everything in bulk, including a one gallon jug of syrup. When we got home the syrup jug had cracked open and spilled all over the inside of my trunk. We tried our best to scoop up what we could, but it is just soaked into the carpet, and is really sticky. My car smells like a pancake house! What can I do to clean up this mess?

MoonFisher answered Thursday September 16 2004, 3:50 pm: The best way to get sticky stuff up is with hot water, or steam, to dissolve it. Many grocery stores rent out steamers that you can get for a day for about $20. Rent one of those and steam clean the interior. You can also try a professional carwash. You will probably have to get the carpet cleaned with either a regular carpet cleaner, or have a cleaning service do it for you. Syrup is thick enough, add to it the sugars and flavour elements and with it soaked in, that's just a bear and a half to try to clean by any conventional means.
Steam cleaning is most likely your best bet. Worst case would be having to shell out $500 or so to get new carpet, but I think that syrup is cleanable (unlike spilling Thompon's Water Seal, which also dissolves the carpet).
p.s. - be careful using any solvents to clean the carpet, as many solvents can dissolve the capet fibers. [ MFS's advice column | Ask MFS A Question ]

XxRockon answered Thursday September 16 2004, 11:43 am: hmm..Maybe like a carpet cleaner? If that doesn't work you could call a carpet cleaner buisness and ask them what to do. [ XxRockon's advice column | Ask XxRockon A Question ]

If they can't do it you might want to try calling a carpet cleaning company, and either ask them what to do or have them come clean it. x0x0x0x [ LoViny0ux914's advice column | Ask LoViny0ux914 A Question ]
