Chemist, musician, artist, programmer, coach, husband, dad, uncle, etc.

So yeah.

hi ive had this horrible sore throat for like 6 days. ive tried everything and nothing seems to work. ive stayed home 4 days from school and am really far behind. what is there to do ive watched like every movie and slept but i get so tired, how do i cure this and what can i do while im sick (link)
My first question is this, and it is not exactly pleasant: does your breath seem to stink lately? If so, then you probably have strep throat and you will have to see a doctor and start (and complete) a course of anti-biotics to get rid of the infection.

The suggestions of gargling saltwater are good - make sure to use warm salt water when you do it. And yes, it will taste like hell, which of course, is why you're only gargling it and not drinking it.

A couple of the viruses running amok have been causing sore throats - for those, all you can do is rest and wait to get better.

Ok, well i just got back from bball practice like 2 hours ago and my lower back is killing me! Does anyone known any streches or anything that can ease up the pain a little bit? Ive already taken tylenol. (link)
Tylenol problay won't help you if your problem is inflamation. Tylenol has NO anti-inflammatory properties. Ibuprofen or Naproxen, however, ARE anti-inflammatories. You might consider alternating applying ice for 10 minutes, then heat for 10mintues, and continue this for an hour or two to help refresh blood to the area. Stretches would including sitting on the floor and reaching for your toes. Also pulling up one knee and twisting your torso towards that knee (pull up right leg, reach with left arm across your body and past the knee - then switch). Another thought would be to see if you can't talk someone into working on your back either via massage or rolling tennis balls around in the sore area. Hope you feel better soon.

Is it all right to have sex with peolpe you don't know as long as you use pertetion?
(link)
Absolutely not. The use of protection does not stop one from acquiring many interesting diseases, nor does it totally stop you form causing pregnancy. There are also the rather obvious moral issues surrouding such actions, of which I will not discuss.

ok..i'm really good friends with well one of my friends. he is 15/m. he likes me as well do ilike him. but he wants to do stuff too quick. I can say that we have done some stuff, but i don't want to go to far. N' he doesn't understand the word, "no." i dont know what to do. I need anyones help, should i do it, or not? (link)
You've already stated that you don't want to, yes? It is not your fault that he cannot understand what "no" means. Put your foot down and do not let him do as he wants - it is not his decision to make. Don't cave in. If he can't deal with you saying "no", then ideally he needs a dose of reality, even if that means you leave him. If he cannot respect your opinion, if he values your friendship that little that he puts his hormonal selfishness ahead of you and your wishes, then his immaturity is blatant. I try not to tell people to break up with someone, but perhaps the two of you are better off as being just friends and nothing more, at least until he gets a clue.

ok i dont rly have a problem with it im just wondering im 13.f and my boyfriend is 15.m and this other guy that likes me is 16.m but see i dont kno why all these older guys want me?? does anyone kno why they would? (link)
Often, an older boy will go after a younger girl because he thinks that he might have an easier time convincing her to do various and sundry things with him because the younger girl is naive. Sometimes a guy will do this because he is not as mature emotionally as others his age. He also might have a secret crush on his little sister and lives it out through someone else [ ok, yeah, I'm kidding on that one... no, really... joke ;) ]

There are a lot of reasons why - sometimes a younger girl can appear to be physically mature and thus appealing, so the guy will pursue her.

No matter what, if you do decide that you have no problem seeing the older boys, make sure you stand your ground and don't let them try to talk you into things that you might not be wanting, because while there are many nice guys out there, there are also a lot of assholes with raging hormones at that age.

Hey, I want to do the carb diet later on in the year because I want to lose weight for my vacation in June, and school in August. I have done the carb diet before, and I hated it but after a week or two I get used to it. Anyway, have you seen that commerical for One-a-day Carb Smart? It says it has more biotin(sp?) to break down all the fats and protiens. Well do you know if it works? Oh and I'm going to exercise every day when I'm on the diet but should I run or walk? Because my metabolism slows down like a lot so I guess I dont have much energy. Oh and what are some bad things about the diet? I know the good already-you lose like 10 lbs in one week! Thanks for reading!! -sherry (link)
Anything that promises to lose 10 pounds in a week is likely not healthy for you. Weight loss should be gradual - sudden losses in weight are inherenlty unhealthy and often very taxing on your immune system. I'd not worry about "fad" diets - just look at caloric intake, sugar (carb) intake, and fat intake and try your best to keep them balanced. Eliminate sugary snaks and caffinated pop. Get an exercise routine and try your best to stick with it - even if you set it up where every night before you go to bed you just do simple things like 2 x 20 sit-ups, 2 x 20 pushups, 2 x 20 jumping jacks, etc... you might try to jog/run when the weather permits, or ride a bike, or use a treadmill if you have access to one. Don't rely on diet to fix things. Diet and exercise, and you making a commitement to yourself, are the best way to go about this. Why people keep going to these "extreme" diets, I'll never know - all-or-none philosophy rarely works - moderation generally always works, yet people keep ignoring that fact. Oh well.

im not trying to be gross but these past 3 days i've been getting really bad diarreah after i eat something, but i dunno why cause theres no change in my diet at all, and im not sick! could i just suddenly be lactose intolerant or something? (link)
or you really could be sick... all because you're head feels fine doesn't mean you're not sick. Go to a doctor. Also, look into taking something like Immodium (contains Loperamide, it will help you).

My mom says I may have mono! What is mono and how can i cure it?! I am going to the doctor's today! And i'm a singer and I have aperformance next week do u think i will be able to perform by then or not?? (link)
Mono - mononucleuosis. It is an illness caused by a virus. It can only be detected via a blood test. It can take a month to several months to get over this illness. The total recovery to getting back to full energy levels can take even longer because mono saps your energy, making your very weak and low stamina. There is no magic cure for mono, other than rest.

EDIT: People who insist on calling it a "kissing virus" only show how the stupid like to perpetuate dumb myths. Mono is highly contageous. It does not require people to kiss. Casual contact, drinking fountains, shared desks, being in the same school... all that can cause a mono outbreak.

Mono, if you are unaware that you have it, and try to live life like you're not sick, can weaken your immune system causing you to become prone to secondary bacterial infections like strep throat. There essentially are very few ways to fight a virus with drugs (antibiotics don't do shit for a virus). If you are given an antibiotic, it is because they feel you are at risk for developing one of the secondary infections. Many people who have had mono can end up being anemic for a while afterwards, too.

I have a new boyfriend at university, but I find myself keeping this news from my friends at home because I don't want it to get back to my ex-boyfriend, becase he is in a very fragile place at the moment and it would really hurt him to find out that I've moved on to somebody else. What I'm trying to do is protect my ex-boyfriend, because I still care about him and don't want to hurt him any more than is necessary, but I feel bad for misleading him and my other friends. Would it be better to just come clean, even if it hurts him in the short term, or should I wait until he's in a better place until I break the news? (link)
I think you're better off just letting people know. While your ex might have difficulty with this, he needs to learn to get over it and move on. At least, let your friends know and indicate that they might want to be discrete with the info - not that you're intentionally trying to hide anything, but that you're life isn't a public affair.

Does anyone know if crest white strips work? (link)
Yes, they work. They work quite well. I cannot legally say more than that ;)

I am always always depressed. I find myself constantly upset and moody. I have very little self confidence and right now I am in a rocky patch with my friends so I feel even worse. My boyfriend and everyone around me tells me that I am pretty and people like me but I don't feel that way. (link)
Perhaps you should stop listening to yourself and try listening to others? Don't beat yourself up - don't sit there and cound your flaws - I see too many people too quick to list everything wrong with them, yet they are totally unwilling to reciporocate and list everything right about themselves. Don't unfairly compare yourself to others, either - no two people are the same, thus comparisons as such prove fruitless, if not frustrating.

Don't be afraid to talk to someone about this. Likely, you're probalby feeling quite normal things during a time when life pretty much feels like it is getting turned upside-down. It is better to get thigns off your chest than to let it hide down inside you, simmering until you explode.

Okay. This is what I go through, about once a month, sometimes more/less frequently. I start changing. I really don't know what it is, it's hard to explain. But I'll try.

It feels like my heart is becoming empty. Like I'm becoming hungry, or like I'm enraged, or like I'm in love (they all feel the same to me.) You know, that feeling. In my heart. It feels like something is trying to change me from the inside, like trying to change my personality. My personality is weird. I think differently. I have no mental problems. O__o;;

I'm thinking that maybe my way if thinking is correct and maybe....God....doesn't want me to know whatever it is I know. Anyway. Back to what happens. The first time it happened, at my friends house, I started getting the feeling and for some reason I knew what was happening almost immediately. I started crying and pounding my chest really hard and saying "Don't change....don't change...." And I was grabbing anything to pound my heart with, I almost went for the silverware ;_;

My friend was really concerned xD I don't think she had any clue what was happening.

The second time, just recently, this happened again, only it wasn't as strong. I have gotten rather good at fighting it. But then it felt like there was a pressure in my head...like something was gently squeezing it.

This isn't puberty. This is something weird happening to me and if it has happened to anyone else I would like to know. I would also like to add that I am not insane. This is a FEELING, not a twisted thought or action. My apologies for the length of this question. (link)
Given what you've described, I would not write off the possibility that you're beginning to suffer delusions associated with schitzophrenia. Assuming you're not just making this up, go talk to a doctor about this.

I have always heard that if your wrapper of a Tootsie Roll Pop has the indian shooting a star you can send it in to get a free Tootsie Pop. Is this actually true, and if so who do you send it to? (link)
NO!!!
This is an urban legend. Not true at all.
http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/weekly/aa030701a.htm

Do a little digging in Google and you find this out very easily.

The article linked said that some grocers will offer a free one if you have this logo, but they are not doing that as part of any offer from the Tootsie Roll company - in fact, it lists that about 1/3 of ALL TOOTSIE ROLLS have that logo - that'd be a very bad contest as damn near everyone would be getting free tootsie pops.

Additional info from Snopes to shoot this myth down: http://www.snopes.com/business/redeem/tootsie.asp

Whats the best type of cleaner to clean
dishes?
wood tables?
tile floors? (link)
Soap.

No, really... many of these cleaners are the same shit in different bottles with slightly different perfumes in them.

Now, the wood table can get tricky depending on how it is finished (laquer, shellac, urethane, etc), but warm, spoapy water that is immediately rinsed off and dried should not hurt any of those.

Tile, if in doubt, use something like PineSol or Mr. Clean.

I dont have my drivers license yet so what do I do to get one? (link)
You get a learner's permit, then take Driver's Ed, then take the test for a license. It varies from state to state, country to country on exactly how this process works. Call your local Department of Motor Vehicles or equivalent for more information.

I am a major in French Spanish and English in my high school. I want to take that farther. What kind of jobs are offered that pay well to people who speak languages really well? What colleges offer such a thing? (link)
Many colleges and universities have linguistics departments. You can major in a language. Jobs include teaching, interpreting, and government and corporate jobs that involve interacting with foreign countries. There is lots of opportunity for people who are very good at linguistics.

OK. Anyone out there have "Irish twins"(basically babies born within a year of each other.)Well, my wife is pregnant with #2!Is it easier or more difficult with the second child? (link)
How do you mean "easier or more difficult"?

If labor, usually giving birth to #2 is easier - and faster - much faster - like, we almost gave birth to Matt in the van faster...

If by how it is at home - it is all up to the baby. We got lucking in that #2 was a very laid-back baby. Of course, he's now currently an insane toddler running amok, but he was a very easy baby. His older brother was a cholicky baby at first - cried and screamed for 4 months - and then became the much more laid back kid that he is now.

If by the pregnancy in general, certain aspects were better, others worse for my wife. Nausea was better with #2 - however, it has been worse with #3 (due in May). The various aches and pains are pretty much at random. Energy levels are stull just as up and down. Things to be aware of are stuff like gestational diabetes - if your wife had it or was boarderline with #1, she could have it again with #2 - so it might be worth looking at controlling her diet a bit early on to help out with the possibility.

Beyond that, this is all I can think of at the moment.

Good luck with #2 - I can't imagine having them that close together. My wife's oldest brother and 2nd oldest sister are Irish twins, I believe. Her mom seemed to do fine with them (she had 5 kids in 6 years).

What does the term i.e. mean? Does it mean something like "For example"? I'm not sure. If you could help me out that'd be great. (link)
The Latin abbreviation i.e. stands for "id est", which means "that is", "that is to say", or "in other words". Another one you'll see are the letters e.g., which stand for the Latin phrase "exempli gratia" which translates to "for example".

What exactly is cybersex? What do people do when they cyber? How do you have sex online? (link)
"Cybersex" is when people attempt to verbally arose each other over the internet. Usually, this is done by one guy pretending he's a girl, and another guy thinking he's seducing a girl and they "talk" about how they'd attempt to arouse each other. Generally, it is absolutely pathetic and shows that these people need to get the hell off their computer and go do something outside. Or at least go watch pr0n. Or get a boyfriend/girlfriend. Or pay a prostitute, because at least that's directly interacting with real people - not fake "sex" on the internet.

Yes, cybersex is absolutely pathetic. It is the epitome of LAME and screams "I'm a wanker!".

aka - don't do it. It is really stupid.

i shave my underarms but lately its been gettin irrated and it itchs. wat to do? (link)
Things to consider:

Shave less often if irritation is persistent.
Use moisturizer after shaving to lessen irritation.
Try an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to reduce the inflammation.
Try a different shaving technique (blade vs. electric)
Try a different brand of razor (the metal used in the blades can be tied to irritation, based on the materials used - look for more "hypoallergenic" products)
Have you changed deodorants lately? Are you using an antipersperant? Those can aggrivate any irritation you're getting from shaving.
If all else fails, ask your doctor if they think it is worth it to see a dermatologist about it - I highly doubt you'll need to do this, though.

Hopefully something from my rambling will help you. Good luck.
