hailebop answered Friday November 5 2004, 1:07 pm: The first step is to go to the doctors and have them check you out, as many bugs can have symptoms similar to the mono virus (tiredness, having a sore throat, general malaise) without actual being the virus. You'll need a blood test to confirm whether you have the virus or not. If you do, unfortunately it's unlikely that you'll be better for your performance, and it's important not to push yourself before your body is ready as this will actually slow your recovery. All you can do is rest, rest, rest and do the normal things like get plenty of fluids. I hope you feel better soon! [ hailebop's advice column | Ask hailebop A Question ]

Laura answered Friday November 5 2004, 11:27 am: No, you won't. It's very catching and if you have it, it can take months to get over it. You can't get around people because they'll catch it, it's like a REALLY heavy cold, and you can't get up and walk around because you're so weak. But there's no way to tell you have it unless you see a doctor.
MFS answered Friday November 5 2004, 11:10 am: Mono - mononucleuosis. It is an illness caused by a virus. It can only be detected via a blood test. It can take a month to several months to get over this illness. The total recovery to getting back to full energy levels can take even longer because mono saps your energy, making your very weak and low stamina. There is no magic cure for mono, other than rest.
EDIT: People who insist on calling it a "kissing virus" only show how the stupid like to perpetuate dumb myths. Mono is highly contageous. It does not require people to kiss. Casual contact, drinking fountains, shared desks, being in the same school... all that can cause a mono outbreak.
Mono, if you are unaware that you have it, and try to live life like you're not sick, can weaken your immune system causing you to become prone to secondary bacterial infections like strep throat. There essentially are very few ways to fight a virus with drugs (antibiotics don't do shit for a virus). If you are given an antibiotic, it is because they feel you are at risk for developing one of the secondary infections. Many people who have had mono can end up being anemic for a while afterwards, too. [ MFS's advice column | Ask MFS A Question ]
alisonmarie answered Friday November 5 2004, 10:13 am: Mono is a sickness which manifests itself in different ways, but mainly by extreme tiredness. There is no cure except rest.
Some people get really sore throats, and your doctor can give you medication to clear up those sorts of problems. But the mono itself? Sleep, sleep, and more sleep.
Some people are off from school or work for six months, others for just a week. Your doctor is the only person who can tell you what you, specifically, can expect.
