Hey, I'm Mara. I love dancing. It's practically my favourite thing to do. I love House, R&B, pretty much everything with a good beat, and Benny Benassi is my hero; that's why my column is a shrine to him. I graduated this year and am now in my first year of college where I'm trying to pick a major. Chances are you'll see some of my Psychology questions floating around somewhere here. I'm also extremely interested in Political Science too because I, like half the people living in Canada, somehow want to change the world. I particularly want to find a cure for poverty, corruption, cancer, AIDS and George Bush because honestly, I think those are the biggest problems we have right now. I have decided that maybe I should take the time to live a little before I start though because I have a good fifty years ahead of me to fix all the issues there are. Currently my life consists of: studying, working, socializing, eating and ocassionaly sleeping. I spent practically all of my high school life being a delinquent and partying to huge extents until I discovered my brain sometime in the middle of my senior year. I still like to have a good time every once in a while but you always need to find that balance (I haven't exactly found it yet but I'm getting close). Unfortunatley, a habit that has stuck with me from school is my obsessive gossiping. I just can't stop and you know, an article in Cosmo says that gossipers are healthier people because they bond over it? Who would have thought? Anyway, I do have my limitations and I don't condone nasty, brutal gossiping and I don't gossip about anything my friends have told me in confidence or something about someone else that they have slipped to me, however, if I find you in a washroom at a random party making out with my bestfriends's boyfriend, a few people are probably going to hear about it. Actually, more than a few people will hear about it because one of my absolute pet peeves is parties where the all the bathrooms are occupied due to sexual activity or... puking activity. Sooooo what else is there to know about me? My favourite thing in the world is shopping and my worst fear is existantialism. I am OCDey in a clinical way so you can ask me questions about that. You can ask me practically anything you want except for dumb questions but I'm not going to answer them in my little column here because it's a huge waste of space when I could be writing about myself (Click 'LookIt' on my menubar for answers to dumb questions so you don't have to embarass yourself asking them and getting bitched out from me). What I can do, is offer you three pieces of truly inspirational advice. Firstly, never live your life by what others want of you, cherish yourself and everyone around you, and never beat yourself down about anything you couldn't have avoided. Secondly, donate at least ten percent of the income you earn in your life to someone who needs it. Lastly, never get into a bulldozer when you're under the influence and start driving it towards a poor freshmen (I am never going to another kegger ever again... ever). Ok, I'll shut up now. You can start asking me stuff, if you haven't hit the back button already.

I got a couple of pumpkins for my porch a week or so ago, and they slowly got little bits taken out of them day by day. Then, yesterday I caught a squirrel munching on them. I would really like to put a bunch of pumpkins on the porch, but don't want to have a bunch of moldy pumpkins with holes all through them on my porch.
Anyone know of any way to deter a squirrel. Hopefully without poison or a pellet gun.

Well, let's just say I'm not the greatest person ever at math. I actually try really hard. I do all of the extra credit things, I practice online and I pay attention during class, but I just can't seem to make a good grade. I've tried going to the extra help things at my school with my math teacher, but it doesn't help.
My average for the nine weeks this time was a 79. Is there something that anyone knows of that I can go to for help? Also, do colleges look at middle school grades or is it only high school grades?
79 isn't bad at all. Don't try to to be extremely good at something you aren't gifted at, just give it your best shot.
And colleges do -not- look at middle school grades.
They barely look at the first two years of high school. All that matters on college applications is your GPA, the marks on courses that go on your transcript and your extracurriculars.
Don't get too caught up on studies when you're this young. You have your entire life ahead of you to be serious.

Does anyone know of any good semi-permanent (lasts about 10 shampoos) hair dyes that I can buy in a drug store and apply myself?

There are only two big temporary hair colours on the market at this point. One is Loreal Color Pulse and the other is Herbal Essences ColorFlirt. I would recommend Color Pulse for reddish tones and ColorFlirt for more browns and neutrals. Both have the same price range and are practically the same product.
Other one-day hair colors can be found in drug stores but that's not what you're looking for.

ok so my friend spent the night with me for the first time 2 nights ago. and she was just admiring my earings, well today when i went to school she has that on and my shark tooth necklace. i said those are my earrings, and thats my necklace. and she goes "no my mom made me go to clairs with her". ok 1. she lied to me bkuz when i gt home i looked everywhere for them and 2. she stole from me. what mom "makes" their daughter go to clairs with her. not her mom, i know her mom. i am sooo mad at her, what should i do? i really want to tell her mom bkuz i really want to get her in trouble, please help, i'm desperate! thx...
I understand what a tough situation that is for you.
You should try to talk to her again though. Give her a chance to return your belongings. Tell her if she gives them back, you'll pretend like it never happened so long as she doesn't steal again.
If that doesn't work, you'll have to go to her mother and explain everything to her. Your friend included her in the alibi, so if anyone is going to know whether the necklace is from Claire's or not, it'll be the mom.
Don't put the issue aside, your friend may grow up and move on to stealing bigger things.

hey does anyone out there know what does it mean when a guy asks for body shots? as in like pictures of your body (clothed) ???? aghghgh i need to know ASAP!! and what are they thinkg of the person they ask this???
It's a picture of your entire body (face and clothes included). A lot of modeling agencies ask for them. However, you might want to be careful who you give them to if you sending them to someone online.
I also read the previous girls advice and a body shot isn't usually a bellybutton shot. A body shot is also a way of drinking tequila or another shot. A person lies on the bar/table with a lime in their mouth, and salt on their stomach. The second person licks the salt, drinks the shot and eats the lime. It's a little sexual.

Since leggings are suddenly "in" now, I was thinking of getting some. I was wondering what colors/styles would look good on someone with a curvier shape...any advice?

I would actually have to disagree with the other people who gave you advice. Horizontal stripes, though trendy, make your legs appear wider. Black is always slimming and looks really cute with skirts and doesn't dominate your whole outfit but works as a cute accent instead.
Other option you might go for, if you're really concerned with your size is skinny legged jeans as those are in style as well and work like leggings. I don't have a lot of information on your body type but for larger girls, leggings might make your thighs look too big.
Either way, I love tights and leggings. Try wearing them with pumps and legwarmers, they give them an 80's rocker vibe and that's exactly what's in for the season.

I have a BIG butt and running theighs. I run a lot so my lower half is really muscular, but i don't know if guys find it ugly. I mean I like my shape fine and I think I look fine in skirts... but do guys?
It actually depends on the region you're living in. Urban populations of men like their girls with big butts and thighs a.k.a. "thick". More cosmopolitan places might like the whispy "thin" type. Suburbs usually have a wide range of body types that are deemed acceptable.
But you have to understand that this is all general, all guys have different preferences. Some like blondes, some like tall girls, some like big boobs, some like big butts, some like petite girls, some like athletic girls et cetera.
I think you'll be perfectly okay. Guys admire sporty girls and as long as you're not obese, I'm sure they're very appreciative of your behind.

I want to put up posters and drawings on my wall of my favorite rock bands but my mom won't let me. What should I do? She's way too overprotective and I hate it. Got any ideas.

You should talk to her and ask her why she thinks you shouldn't put posters up. Try to resolve the situation by proving that you're mature and you've earned her trust.
If that doesnt work, try gradually building up to the posters. Maybe put a picture in a frame or a picture that's not related to a band up. Add more pictures and pictures that are more relevant. Chances are, she'll be so used to them by the time you've put all the images up, she won't notice that what was a small picture frame of a rock band, turned into the rock band being wallpapered into your room.

okay, where to start. well i was going out with this boy named Alex. and i liked him alot and everything but he liked me like a thousand times more. well like every night this boy Lane would call me tryin to get with me, but i never thought anything of it. well about two months passed and me and Alex had already broken up. Then Lane was going out with my friend Addair who can't keep a boyfriend at all. Well she was grounded and me and Lane and all my other friends were all friends so we were goin out together and Lane started liking me that night again. me and Lane have kind of like always had a thing for eachother. well the next Addair brok up with Lane cause like i said, she doesn't like keeping a boyfriend. then Lane asked me out. so i said yes. i have never had a boyfriend like Lane before. it was so much fun with him, like we experienced so many new things together. we went out for 3 1/2 months and then at this fair thing we have in my town, his friends from his school were there [we go to different schools] and he started acting like a COMPLETE JERK. like it was so weird, he was never that bad. so then i couldnt take it and i broke up with him. then i found out he acted like that so i would break up with him. that hurt. i was sitting there crying so hard and all he could say to me was stop shaking. so then we went a caouple days without talking, and then i called him. i was like, Lane, what happened? and he basically told me he was just tired of having a girlfriend and he wanted to be single. i never wanted to break up with him. so then the first weekend after we broke up we were hanging out at the mall with all our friends and he was acting like we were like, "together" you know. and it made me so mad. but i couldnt help but like it cause i like him. then the next day me him, my best friend Taylor, and her boyfriend which is Lane's bestfriend, Kyle all went to the movies. well Lane likes kind of "simple" girls in a way. and well, i dress kind of not simple sometimes. i like acessories and style and stuff. well at the movies that night he decided that he wasnt gonna hang out with us because of what i was wearing. i mean how frickin low is that. i was so mad. cause then i was stuck with Taylor and her boyfriend and oh my gosh that was like hell. well then i had people over at my house the next monday and he was one of them. we flirted like crazy and like, i can tell there's chemistry there. but i just don't know how much. well then last night we went to the movies again, me Taylor, Kyle, and Lane. well me and Lane used to always go to the movies together when we went out, alot of stuff happened at the movies. so it was hard. cause you don't know how bad i just wanted to start making out with him. well then he started trying to kiss me and he held my hand and i resisted for a while but uhhh i just cant resist that boy. so then we were like all together and it was just so confusing and he was like i still like you and i shouldn't have ever broken up with you. my friend Taylor doesn't think i should go back out with him anytime soon. my friend Caela thinks i deff. should. my friend Addair is in the middle. so i am so completely confused. i dont know what he wants, i dont know what i want, i dont know what my friends want. so can you help, please? sorry its so long, lol.

Don't start going out with him again. Not for a while anyway. He obviously isn't mature enough to handle a girlfriend, he said so himself and his actions prove it. Why risk him hurting you again? If he wants you, he's going to have to earn you this time. You can even tell him that you're sick of his games and he'll get a second chance but only if he lives up to it. If you run back to him, how is he going to learn that you're a special girl? He'll keep tossing you out and retrieving you whenever he feels like it and -that- is -not- okay.

Ok so i have been going out with this guy for a really long time, and i love him to death! but before we started going out, i heard a rumor that he tried smoking, so a few months ago i asked him if he did, and he said he would never ever do that, but he told me he did try it once a long time ago, but now he told my relaly close friend that he has been clean for 2 weeks, and so he hasn't been truly honest about the whole smoking thing to me, and like i want him to be able to talk to me about this stuff...some ppl say i should break up with him, but i don't think i could. HELP ME!
Honestly, I don't think it's a good enough reason to break up with him but of course, that depends on how strongly you are against smoking.
You can tell that he cares about you because he didn't want you getting mad at him and the fact that he told his friend he's been off them for a while means he is actually trying to get clean.
Your best bet is to talk to him and tell him you disapprove of him lying to you but you'll support him in his efforts to stop smoking. Then do just that.

Okay I personally am a dark person. I love vampires and reading musty books and listening to goth music and I like wearing the color black. Now heres the problem my mom won't let me buy black clothes and I don't know what to do. She won't let me get black nail polish or let me wear eyeliner but I really want to. What should I do? Also my room is really disgusting. In the morning I have very very very very light pink walls and in the evening it looks coffee with creme curtains how do I make it look more gothic or punk. I really want to show my mom that I'm not a normal kid and that she can't change it.
Put up pictures of goth images and bands. Buy a bunch of black lamps/accents for your room and put them everywhere.
Start subtly doing your makeup darkly, maybe just rim the bottom of of your eyes black and gradually make it darker and darker. You could also use markers to colour your nails black.
You also need to have a talk with your mum to tell her you're different. If you want to, you should tell her it's probably a phase, that always helps my mother.

well my friends party is tomorrow and shes totally copyin me because shes doin the same things as i did at my party and its right next door to where i had my party. for her party she needs to know the exact people that are going because thats how the place is and it was the same for my party. well anyways i guess i have to go and first she said its gonna be at 6pm but now she says come at like after 6:30pm so i was like should i come at like 7pm and she was like yea sure. then i asked her when its gonna end and she tells me i can leave whenever and that people are gonna stay after 1:00am. oh yeah and shes only turnin 15 and i had a big party because it was my SWEET SIXTEEN..someone told me that shes only havin a party because i had such cool party.

You should seriously be really flattered. These girls are trying their best to be you while knowing that they'll never actually be able to do it. You're a trendsetter, the best you can do is a drop a look and adopt a new one when everyone starts copying you. To some degree, you can think of yourself as a celebutante who can't fend away all the fans.
But there's no reason to be jealous because everyone else knows that you're the original.
Your friend probably enjoyed your party a lot and didn't want it to end, so she wants to recreate another one. Even if your friend has the exact same party as you with all the same people, all those people are going to know that the party is a copy of yours.

Ok so my dad started dating this chick and after a couple months she moved in well to make a long story short she moved out and her son was still living with us and is still but they were broke up so..after a while and other stuff i had end up having sex with her son multipule times and me and him are like i dont know what you'd consiter us. Honestly though, the guy seems like a jerk and there is a very good chance that he might be using you. He does have one thing right though, he said you're different and you are. You don't have to take this bull from him, you deserve to be with someone who treats you with as much as love and respect as you give him.
You need to talk to him and tell him you're not putting up with him partying like crazy anymore. Ask him to decide between you and his crazy sexedup lifestyle. He might choose you but there's a probability that he won't and if that's the case, you should move on and find someone deserving.

I was just wondering is there a trcik for studying? Like write with colors or something? Some like tips would be great!
Buy -a lot- of highliters and designate special tasks to them i.e. pink is for vocabulary words, yellow is for key words in a sentence, green is for key sentence in a paragraph.
When you're reading, do it section by section and when you're done one section, ask yourself three questions and answer them in summary:
1. What does the material say?
2. What does the material mean?
3. How does the material relate to the rest of the text?
Organize all your notes according to date or order of material and make sure you can actually read your notes later on. Add titles, subtitles and numbers for every new section when you're writing your notes to distinguish it from others.
Make sure you look up words in the dictionary that you don't understand and write them in the margin.
Try compare notes with classmates to see if you missed anything. Ask them to summarize the reading they've been doing too in case you were confused. Study groups work really well, you should try to organize one.
Always ask your instructor if you don't get something. It's better in the long run.

It depends on the type of bird. You can usually tell with the colour and size.
With a few, you need to get them sexed if both genders look the same. It's a type of test kit you can find online or from a specialty store.

Hi. I work in a drop in centre for people with mental and physical disabilities. Recently we hired a new girl to work in a seperate job employment program, funded by the centre, but not really being involved with it. My own employer, before she left for her maternity leave, made it clear that I was in charge of the drop in program.
However- this person does not have anyone to work with in her own program, and apparantly has decided to horn in on mine. When I am working with the members, she buts in, telling them what to do and how to do it. Several times she has forced people (who may not be willing/may be unable) to do work like washing dishes. Once she was incredibly pushy towards a person who was suffering a petite mal seizure.
I don't want to have to deal with further strained relationships with my coworker. Already I feel resentful and threatened by her, mainly because she is two years younger, fresh out of college, and is one of those super-perky-isn't-my-life-wonderful-compared-to-yours kinds of people. How do I politely assert my authority without offending her?

That’s a tough place to be. Normally, just being patient and putting up with her would be an option but if she’s trying to run your program and is doing a mediocre job at it, she’s making things difficult for the people who drop in too.
An easy way out would be to treat her like an assistant. Direct her on how to help others and maintain an authoritative position at the same time so she knows whose boss. In that sense, even if she is “butting in”, at least she’s doing it with you supervising her. Maybe she’s just bored and she’ll welcome a little leadership.
If things are still strained, you’ll just have to have a talk her. Ask her how everything is going at her new job and act like a big sister figure. If her behavior is still declining, confront her about it and find a way to nicely tell her to do her own job. Explain that your employee left you in charge but you are open to any feedback and will try very hard to incorporate it into your program but at the same time, you would prefer being in charge yourself.

Ok I have had a razr and for ages and LOVE it.
1. It felt weird for a day but after it felt totally natural and it's easier to handle and store.
2. Don't buy the light pink razr. They've been coloured over and over to achieve the perfect colour and the guy at Rogers Wireless said that it's the reason why they chip so easily. My hot pink razr is good as new.
3. No. I've dropped the thing so many times. Unless you throw it against a wall, it probably won't break off. It's very well reinforced. Just don't step on it while it's open or anything like that.
4. I suppose so. I don't know your lifestyle. But it's perfect for mine. I only carry my phone and money to parties and it fits really well in my back pocket and it's thin so it doesn't look like a lump sticking out. The thinness also helps while you're texting your friends in class. It fits in nicely in your textbook/binder.
5. I have no clue about the prices in the US. I'm in Canada and I had to buy it for it's orginal price but these days they're having sales where it's fifty dollars if you get a 3 year plan.

It's pretty clear that you still have feelings for the boy but the real question is, is that healthy way to be?
It sounds to me like he's a little bit destructive. I'm sure you could do much better than him and you don't want to get tied down before meeting all the cute boys at high school anyway.
I think you should wait for your first kiss and do it with someone special you meet instead of Seth in case stuff doesn't work out and your first kiss will be with someone you might hate later on.
And I've had experience with high school drama and if you're young and even if you only kiss a guy, stuff gets blown up and you might be called a slut. You have to watch out for yourself in that kind of environment.

i have had my period for serverals years now. but the past months it has come every two weeks. it lasts for a week. then two weeks later it is back. is this normal. and why would it do this.
My friend has had the same problem like you for years. She went to her doctor and had him give her birth control to regulate her period. There wasn't a hormonal problem but it's well worth it for you to go get it checked out anyway.
My period skips for months and then comes back. Everyone is different and your body is constantly changing. Rapid weight loss or gain or stress can also effect your menstral cycle. Don't panic put go consult a doctor or a clinic to see what you should do.
