Hey Everyone :) I'm Kate and a level 2 mod on here. I've had this account since July 2004, so I've been on here since I was 13! Wow ... crazy for me to think how long ago that was. I will admit I don't check in as often as I once did, but being away at college, being in a sorority, and having a job when I'm not at school is very time consuming. I still try to help out as much as possible, and if you send me a question I WILL answer it. im 17 and adopted i don't know who my real parents are but would like to find out.do you know how old you have to be to be able to get to see your adopted papers from the state or where ever you get it from?and do i need permission from my adopted parents?and when do i get to see them without their permission?please help

It really depends on if it were an open or closed adoption & if your adoptive parents are helpful or not.

im a senior in high school and im soo confused about college. i've always been under the impression that you take the 4 core classes just like you do in high school, and then go on to study in your major. but like my teacher this year said in college he didnt have to take math because he was an english major and didnt need it. im going in to the medical field, so since that focuses on math and science, would i have to take english or history still? would there be any way to exempt these classes?? please only answer if you're in or been to college and know for sure.

It really depends on the courses you take in high school and which college you choose.

The school I am at has what we call designators. It means that you have to take a certain amount of certain courses.

At my school, if I made an A in high school world history, I wouldn't have to take any history courses. If I passed the AP english 3 & 4 exams in high school, I wouldn't have to take any english classes. If I took & passed AP Calc in my high school, I wouldn't necessarily need any math...
See where I'm going?

It all depends.
If you haven't taken and passed and AP courses, then you'll probably have to take at least one english and at least one history course.
I only have to take one history course the entire time I'm in college. I only have to take one science class. I only have to take one math class. I have to take 2-3 englishes (which will probably be inevitable no matter where you go) because I never took AP English in high school.

But, to set you straight, your college schedule is nothing like high school. They actually prefer you start taking courses in your major early on (especially if you have a major that could take over 4 years to finish if you don't get started right away... some major classes are prequisites for the others).

You will probably have to take a lot of math & sciences, 1-2 histories and 1-3 englishes. (Remember, no matter what your major, english is a very important class to take).
At my school, we're also required to take one fine arts class, one social science, one multicultural (although no foreign language is required), etc.
Sophomore year is when you declare your major and start taking mostly major classes.

(By the way: In most colleges, you can choose the time of your class, which professor you have, etc. In most colleges, you make your own schedule. At my school, we make ours online)

Like I said before, though, it all depends on your high school classes, where you're going, and what they accept. You can probably call the schools you're interested in and ask them what their core requirements are.

Actually, there is no way for you to delete your account.
DangerNerd, the site owner, is the only one who has that ability.
You need to contact him (through his column or his e-mail) and let him know who you are and why you want your account deleted.

Just because you're not on as much as you once were, you don't need to delete your column. There are various other choices. Just know that if you delete your column, all of your hard work will go to waste. Any questions you asked (and answers you were given) will be gone to where you'll never be able to find them again. Any answers you give will be gone, etc.
Do you really want it all to just go away?
You don't have to delete your column. You can just take a leave of absence and come back when you have spare time. Remember that by answering one question, you've helped a few people.

Im getting my braces off in the next couple of days and I have noticed some brown spots I've never notoced before! I'm really nervous about getting them off, cuz' when I do, I want to be able to smile, not be afraid to! I really want to what is going to happen. Is it going to be there forever or what? HELP ME!

I got my braces taken off in July. I had one really bad spot on my front tooth that made me kind of embarrassed to smile, but the retainers they gave me covered that up until I was able to have a dentist fix it.

Once you get your braces off, your mouth will feel so spacious & your teeth will feel weird and slimy because you aren't used to how they feel.
It doesn't hurt for them to be taken off. It barely takes any time for them to come off. The part that takes time is the cleaning afterwards. The orthodontist has to get off any glue & junk that is on your teeth. Usually they will polish them up for you, too. Then they'll fit your retainers.

I definitly suggest wearing the retainers, too. I didn't wear my top one for a week after I have that one tooth fixed, and now I can't get it in -that's how much my top teeth have shifted. Luckily it's not noticable much, but DEFINITLY wear the bottom one! Your bottom teeth will shift twice as much as your top if you don't wear the retainers they give you!! It can be REALLY noticable, too!

If your teeth are in good condition, just not as white as you'd like them to be, there are tons of products out there. You'd be smart to ask your denstist/orthodontist what whitening product they reccommend (ask if they think crest whitestrips are good, etc).

Don't worry about it too much. Think of it this way: You have a $4000 smile, USE IT!

what free place can i get tested at to make sure i am clean and dont have any disease? i dont think i do at all but i want to know to be sure.

Every health department I've ever heard of has done free STD tests & such (I assume that's the testing you're referring to).

I don't know where you live, but if you google the name of your city and the words 'health department', I'm sure you'll find the local listing.

If not the health department, most average-big cities will have free clinics.
If you live in a small town, it will be harder to find, but you should still be able to find something relatively close to you.

No problem. I was hoping I would get to speak with her more than I had the chance to do and that it would help you out even more. What I did learn from her speaking today was that she chose to look at the more positive aspect of everything that happened in her past.
Anyway I'd be glad to help you decipher how parts of the Apologize song can relate to her story (even though what I say probably won't be 100% truthful to how she meant it to be). It's up to you to use what I give you to write the paper, though. Keep in mind that it's strictly against our policy on this site to do anything other than just assisting you. I'm probably going to be going further than I should in helping you here.
Anyway, I'm going to give chunks of lyrics (they will be in quotes) and then describe how I think they relate to the story (and where I think they relate). Bare with me because I'm letting a friend borrow my book, so I don't have it with me to reference. (I don't quite remember all the names, exact events, exact details, etc.)

To relate that to the autobiography, I would hook this part of the song to one of two sections of her life. One could be where her mother is out of town and Jeanette is holding on to the money. Her father keeps asking her for money and, because of her love, she gives it to him. This relates because he tells her that he needs her and the money, etc. She knows she shouldn't give it to him, but she loves him so much that she can't help but give her father what he asks for.
This could also relate to the time that she asks him (I think for her birthday) to give up drinking. For a while there, he does okay. He's giving it up. He couldn't have done it had she not asked, etc. BUT, then he starts drinking again. That's when he disappoints her. He doesn't come right out and apologize for it, but it still has the basic idea of him saying her needs her, disappointing her, and her not wanting to forgive him (even though we know she does, over & over again). When the song says "it's too late to apologize", it makes me think of when he steals the money from their piggy bank (that they're saving to go to NY with). It also can be for the part in the novel where Lori, Brian, and Jeanette are all allowing Rex to live with them in NY at one point in time & he continues doing stupid things & they just kind of give up on their parents (especially Rex). It's another one of those "you've lost all your chances & apologizing won't matter" moments.

Here I feel could relate to anywhere in the story where Rex talks Jeanette into helping him. Basically, Jeanette is the only one who sticks up for her father through thick & thin. She loves him to death and even though she knows he's a screw up, she would ALWAYS do what it takes to help him out & be good. She almost gets herself raped by one of her fathers buddies just to help him out. Her and her father have a special bond and no matter how much he disappoints her, they need each other.
This part of the song where it says "I need you like a heart needs a beat" could be a response from Rex to Jeannette. He knows he needs her and that she's his world. She sticks up for him when nobody else will, etc.
The part where it says "I loved you with a fire red..." could represent when they're in NY. She loves him and wants to help him, but her love is turning blue because of the problems he's causing while they're in NY. She loves him and wants to help, but he's being so much trouble. He won't necessarily apologize, but (since the chorus is coming up) you could relate how she's telling him that (before he would even try), it's too late to apologize. She's been there for him so much & he hasn't reciprocated in a way that she need shim to, so she's kind of giving up on him.

The song ends with a repeat of the first two lines...

"I'm holding on a rope, got me 10 feet off the ground..."

This could relate to his death (just trying to make the song & even come full circle).
Even after his death, everyone has a strong bond with him. She's attached to him even though he's gone.

She told us today how, at the funeral, she told everyone the story of the Christmas where he gave them the stars & her Venus. Ms. Walls said that after the funeral, her sister, Lori, said to her "isn't it like that SOB Rex Walls to give someone something that ain't even his" (or something like that). So, even though he's gone, they're still holding on to him, his memory, etc.


There are tons of other parts of the story you can relate the text of the song to. Just think about it.
I'm not sure how long your paper has to be, but it shouldn't be too difficult.
If you finish it by Saturday, you can send it to me & I can proof read it. It's up to you, though.

Yeah, basically they're the same thing.

I went shopping at the Gap yesterday with my best friend. We did our normal routine and checked out a few places in the mall before heading over to the Gap, where my best friend spotted a really cute top. She couldn't (and still can't) afford the top at the Gap though so we ended up having to pass it up. We had lunch at Subway after shopping and she started talking about the top at the Gap. Her sweet 16 birthday is coming up and, even though I'm throwing her a party, I think it would be kind of nice to buy the top for my best friend as a birthday present.

The Gap top is actually $48 though.
Do you think it's appropriate for me to give this to her as a birthday gift or do you think it's too expensive? She has no idea that I'm thinking of purchasing the top from the Gap for her so it isn't a big deal if I pass it up. I could always pick her up something from Hollister since she is crazy about Hollister too. My first though was to pick her up a shirt from Hollister actually until she fell in love with this shirt at The Gap. (Anyone have a general preference to The Gap or Hollister anyway?)

I guess what I'm really questioning is: How much should I spend on a birthday gift for my best friend who is turning 16?

I think this is a very nice gesture from you. My mom would think I was crazy if I did something like that, but I probably would.

If you really aren't sure and think it might be inappropriate, you could always give her a $25 or $30 gift card to the Gap, that way you're paying about half for it. I'm sure with her birthday coming up, she'll have plenty of money to be able to afford it, especially with your help.

If you really want to buy it for her & can afford to do so, I say go for it. I really only suggest doing this if you guys are BEST BEST friends. $50 is too much for just a friend or a friend you are around a lot but wouldn't tell your deepest, darkest secret to. If she's just a "regular" friend, I think $20-$30 to the Gap would be great. If she's your best friend ever, either a $30 gift card or just buying it would be a nice gesture.

Can anyone give me advice on how to clean my bathroom quickly? We're expecting some guests in a little while and the bathroom is just dirty and, overall, horrible.

Any quick tips to clean a bathroom? Any bathroom cleaning tips are appreciated, especially if they're QUICK! I just need the bathroom tidy enough to be presentable for the rest of the evening but there isn't time for a thorough cleaning!

Do you have any wipes? You can easily wipe down your counter with antibacteria wipes.
As for the floor, do you have a swiffer of sorts? Those work wonders (trust me, my sister & I share a bathroom & there is always tons of hair everywhere from brushing, styling, etc. as well as tons of makeup).

If you don't have any moist wipes you can use to wipe down the bathroom (and if you don't have time to run out to buy some), you can probably just use a good paper towel, an antibacterial cleaner (or if you really don't have any cleaners, I suppose water would be okay), and just wipe everything down with that.

As for your toilet/tub, I'm sure you have some sort of cleaner in the house (sorry, but you didn't mention the products you have, so IDK how well I can help), just do a quick scrub.

I doubt these guests need to use the tub, so something quick there (running water & wiping it down) would be perfect because you just have to keep the curtain closed and who will see it?!

If you have time to run to your nearest store, get a box of those things that turns your toilet water blue... they're amazing at cleaning! All you do is put it in the box thing behind the toilet, flush your toilet once or twice, and wa-la, your toilet is clean! :)

If you don't have time to run out, put on some gloves and start scrubbing (even if all you have is soap).
Like I said before, wet-wipes (even if all you have are paper towels and water) will work wonders on the sink & floor.

Only if you remember what the e-mail address you used to sign up for yahoo mail was.

For example, I have a yahoo mail, gmail, & hotmail. When I signed up for yahoo mail, I already had a hotmail/msn account. I used that e-mail to create my yahoo mail. Now, if I forget my yahoo password, it e-mails it to my hotmail account.

So, if you signed up using another e-mail address as a backup, you should be able to recover your password.

If not, then your only option is to change it.

when ever im talking to people or even when im just standing somewhere I have no idea where to put my hands and i feel like heaps uncomfortable so i usually just end up crossing my arms which makes me look really unapproachable. :S

Oh wow, I'm kind of the same way!

I either am awkward with my hands and end up crossing them & looking unhappy like you, or I'll tend to talk with my hands (I'm northern, it's what we do!).

Occasionally I'll put one of my hands in my pocket, on my hip, holding on (gently) to my beltloop, etc.

I try to do anything but crossing them.
Anytime you have something "hiding" your body, you tend to look unapproachable.
Work on you body movements while talking to people, even if it means practicing in the mirror. It helps more than you would think. =)

Are you actually friends or really just acquaintences?

Because if you're actually friends (you talk, hang out, etc), then it wouldn't be weird at all for you to ask him if he wants to go to the homecoming dance with you.
If he then asks if you want to go as friends or dates, you can say whichever one he wants to go as. That way you don't come directly out and say it, but it's obvious that you like him & he'll know whether to let you down gently if he doesn't feel the same or to say as dates if he does.

I have an old myspace from when i was in like 5th grade, and I don't use it anymore how can I delete it, without knowing the loggin. I already asked Tom, but they email it to your email. Which brings us to problem number two. My email for my login was deleted, so I can't acess the answer. I don't know how I'm going to change my email, since when you go to it emails you a conformation. Again, I emailed Tom about this, but they email the answer to your email.
Should I just make a new myspace and email them from there?

every time i call sprint and ask how much it is to cancel my phone plan they won't tell me...so i'm gonna have my phone for a year in november. but i signed up for a 2 year contract. how much does it cost to cancel my phone plan after a year?

Normally, it will cost $200-$300 to cancel a plan. My mom cancelled one with Sprint and it was roughly that much.

If they're refusing to tell you the price, there is something seriously wrong there & I would ask to speak with a superviser.

Sprint has the worst customer service out of all the cell phone providers I've had any contact with. Their phones & service are usually great, but their customer service & employees kind of suck... speaking from personal experience, that is.

Hi, I hav a Compaq laptop. The company isn't around anymore, and my laptop is currently "snapping in two" slowly. this happened to my friend too, and she had the same one as me.

I am currently trying to save up for another laptop, so I was wondering what laptops are good. I'm looking for a durable, widescreen one. But, just brand names will work too.

I have a Dell & it's working really fine for me. I bought it through my school, but you can get them online, too.

Also, a lot of my friends have Macs & they are supposed to be amazing. Also, they told me that the printer comes free (whereas I bought mine seperately).

Apples are supposed to be AMAZING! But they're also really expensive.

My laptop cost me just under $1500, so it also depends on what your price range is.

Because asking the same question more than once is against the rules, I can't suggest asking this question to Theymos (a technology whiz, it seems), but if you have any specific laptop questions, I'd go to his column.

Maybe go straight to him & ask which laptops he likes the best & why... what's so great about them, etc. That way you can get insight into more than one.
A lot of times, if you go to electronic stores, you can find a sales associate to give you their honest opinion on the merchandise... even if you're just looking at the moment.
Also, if you look to buy online, a lot of sites will give customer reviews on the products. Those help a whole lot more than you could ever imagine!

It's an oldfashioned rule. Every site I visited said they don't know where it originated. Most people used to think the time frame is between labor day (September) and memorial day (may).
