What do teenagers look for in a magazines.

Question Posted Wednesday December 28 2005, 1:44 pm

Hi everyone I am planning to start my own magazine company. I wanted to know from teenagers what do you'll look for in a magazine. If you have any suggestions or comments let me know I will greatly appreciate them. But I don't want comments on celebrities because I already have that covered.
Thank you :)

Diversity. Your teenager years are pretty much a happy medium between hell and paradise. I'm assuming you've far learned this by now, so you know how tough it is. Seeing as how they're all pretty much a bunch of moody sacks of hormones, you can bet the issue of self-confidence is always on our mind. If you could gear your magazine more towards the desire of the generation (rather than a particular "label"), that would probably be a good idea, at least one worthy of some thought. And what better way to begin appealing to our "generation" than with a wide variety of religion, nationalities, and physical appearances?

I also agree with Southern_Chickety down there. The embarrassing stories page is the absolute very first page I thumb for. ;]

I <3 Magazines, i collect them. Here's some ideas:
1. get an old magazine, from '99 or something and read about the stars that were good back then, and then talk about how HORRIBLE they turned out to be, you can do the same thing with technology and stuff.
2. i <3 the new styles
3. i <3 quizzes, and i could totally help out with that, if you want i can make you free cool quizzes! my email is silverwolf1561@yahoo.com!
4. i love hearing abour celeb gossip
5. i really love hearing about tours BEFORE they happen, so i can get some tickets.
6. when i see my favorite stars on the covor, I NEED to buy it.

i can think of others, also. Try an advice collumn!! get some questions from here, and answer them and put them in the magazine. i'm sure it'll be great! Also, i want to warn you, teenagers nowadays, usually dont like Hilary Duff, so dont do what J14 does and ALWAYS put her on the cover, i mean, it's tiring. REALLY. Try other people! lol. hope i helped!

IAmShammay answered Wednesday December 28 2005, 7:21 pm:
in my magazines, i want to see normal people wether they're fat, skinny, short, tall, missing an arm, have blue teeth(get my point?). im so sick of the magazines with super skinny models in it and nothing else.

something else i would want is issues that impact our lives and those aroung us. none of the magazines i've read have had issues such as abortion, capital punishment, legalized ages??( i mean like the drinking age, smoking, driving, ect.) it would be nice to see peoples opinions and what some people are doing about it.

i would also want the infamous embaressing stories. i love to read those. it makes me feel much better after i see how stupid other people are.

the typical teenage controversies would be good too. (drinking, drugs, cutting, sex..)

oh and last but not least, clothes and makeup for every body type, every color.

MELiixMARiiE answered Wednesday December 28 2005, 5:25 pm:
Well, some of the things I like to look for whenever I'm reading magazines is:

-new hairstyles for all sorts of hair types ( short, long, bangs, etc. )

-new styles ( and nice cheap ones at stores I can go to and afford I can't afford the 24802 dollar stuff celebrities can )and like, nice good makeup you can get and nice hair straightners and curlers.

- also new styles for all sorts of styles like punk and such not just all girly and preppy and everything.

-I LOVE THE EMBARASSING STORY SECTION! I love love love it, it always is cracking me up and everything. :D

-I also love the advice columns and those real life stories you know like,"Does He Like You As A Friend.. Or More?" "Love Stories" "Advice On Kissing" or "How To Talk To Boys And Keep It Going", etc. Because it really helps me in real life situations and everything.

- and of course, posters of celebrities and stuff and also have alot of quizzes. I like taking those and finding out "What Color Looks Best With Me" and all that stuff. :]

I would suggest looking through some of the popular magazines like SEVENTEEN and COSMOGIRL and see some of the things they're doing and take bits and peices and change it around to something of your own. :]

If you're starting a new magazine, then you'll probably want something nobody else has. A column or something that'll make people think "Oh, I want to read this magazine, because it has this!". Not sure what it could be, maybe something like Hottie Of The Month, Advice Girl, Blush Corner (embarassing stories from staff and readers), or whatever. Hope that helped a bit.

Advice giving is good. I (personally) like reading it. Embarrassing Stories. Horoscopes (lol). Games, Quizzes (not the kind like "Does He Like You?" Kind), Hairstyles!!, Recommended Product of The Month (I made that one up!). And Bout It for Me. I'm Sure everyone else has good advice!!

Good Luk!!

S_C answered Wednesday December 28 2005, 2:48 pm:
Personally I LOVE the embarassging stories that the readers submit, they are the first thing I look for when reading magazines such as seventeen and cosmo. I also like the quizes. Ummm enjoy reading stories about how people overcame certain things, like in one magazine I read how a few girls were out drinking and they got into an accident, one dies the other survives... I like to read about them, only if they're interesting though. Now is this directed towards teenagers in general, teenage girls, or teenage boys? Because I'm a girl you're not going to get everything from me, the guys are going to have different opinions. I like reading reviews about movies and stuff, it helps me decide which I want to see, but you can get those in newspapers and stuff also. Sometimes I'll take a look at the makeup tips, or styling tips.
I think it's awesome that you want to start your own magazine company. That's really ambitious of you! I would take suggestions from some of the popular magazines, like read through a Seventeen magazine or a Cosmo Girl or something, see what they seem to have. Don't copy them or anything, just take a look to get better ideas. Also maybe you can have like an advice thing in it. Like readers will send in questions and you'll post a few (depending on how long they are) in the magazine, but you will still answer the ones worth answering. I think that would be cool, I mean I wish there was a job out there where I could just be a columnist or something.
Anyway, good luck with everything!!
