Wanted: Straight Hair!

Question Posted Sunday July 10 2005, 4:13 pm

Ok..I have reeeally curly hair. I want it to be straight but when I try to straighten it there are 2 problems:
1. It takes me 1 and a half to 2 hours to get it completely straight.
2. My hair only stays straight for a day or overnight..even if I just straightened it.

Are there any easier ways to make my hair straight and make it stay straight for a while?

Thanks ahead of time. I will rate high for helpful answers.

Sincerely-
Curly wanting to go straight

Well, they have lots of sprays and things you can use to make it straight, but I use Physique Keep It Straight and I reccomend it. It works very well. The CatWalk products also work very well. You can get Phsyique Keep It Straight at wal mart, and I got CatWalk as a birthday present, but I'm sure they'll be at wal mart or Ulta3. Hope I helped!

You can always go to a salon and get a relaxer on your hair. That will make it easier to straighten and make it stay straight for longer. Good luck!@

DancinCutie08 answered Monday July 11 2005, 12:47 pm:
well the first thing i dont recomend getting it relaxed.. it sorta works but its not worth you money (its like $60) unless you have african american hair. try switching straighteners like i used helen of troy and i went from straigtening my hair in an hour to like 10-15 min. try not showering every day like do it every other day. straigten you hair like partially just so its like wavy and pull it (high pony tail not low) back over night and do the rest in the morning. braid you har after you shower and it will curl less. buy a relaxing kit from like giant eagle because they are only like $5 so if it doesnt work or look nice you not out of you money. blow dry you hair before straigtening it it makes it a little bit frizzier but it cuts down straigtenign time. lastly condition your hair well it makes it easier to work with

You could get that thing done that permanently straightens your hair. But you still have to a few things but it stays mostly straight until the curly hair grows back out.

okay my hair is completly curly too! its really hard to keep it straight i understand what your going through! something that always helps me thats pretty quick is a brush and dry! its just right after you get out of the shower blow-dry your hair but while blow-drying brush it down straight...it will still be a bit curly and frizzy but some FRIZZ-EASE (found at your local wal-mart/meijer) should take care of that as for the curlyness it might be a little curly but its alot easier to straighten!!

I know this may not be the cheapest way, but you can get a perm at a salon and there are also other choices besides perms you could get done. I would suggest calling the salon you go to and ask what they could do for your situation, also call other salons close by.

I hope this helps you! =]

FunnyCide answered Sunday July 10 2005, 5:34 pm:
Hey, me too! I want straight hair too... but I don't have it. I don't have *really* curly hair, but it's thick, frizzy and wavy. Insanely thick, frizzy and wavy. A few days ago, I was visiting family and got my hair cut by a guy named Doi (Montgomery, Alabama). He straightened my hair, and it stayed straight overnight and into the next day! He used a Chi flat iron, and though they can be pricy (up to $119) if you find one on eBay, you can get one for $50. Not that that is really a cheap number, but it's better... anyway, that is the best flat iron out there. It is really lightweight and gets hot quickly. It's really good... and it works quickly. My mom got me a flat iron from Wal*Mart (mistake 1) and it takes me two and a half hours to get my hair straight. I don't have two and a half hours to do my hair. When Doi straightened my hair, it took fifteen minutes! I couldn't believe it. Fifteen minutes. He also used something called Holding Spray from Bumble and Bumble (which strikingly reminds me of annoying garden pests..) but it helps hold the moisture and humidity out while locking the heat into your hair, so it stays straight longer. Doi told me that after he straightened my hair and I went home, just to go about my day normally, to go to bed as usual, and that my hair would be as straight then as it was when I first got it done. Well, he was right. Normally my hair wouldn't stay straight longer than 12 hours.. and we're talking 24 or more here!!

Because my mom is so sick of me always wearing my hair in a ponytail holder, she's getting me a Chi straightener from eBay (in the box, 1 year warranty - everything) cheaper than if we just ordered it. If you'd like, invest in one of these straighteners, read comments and such about them etc. If nothing else, invest in some Holding Spray from (haha) Bumble and Bumble.

Some tips that Doi gave me:

- When you're straightening your hair, make sure it's 100% dry or it will not work correctly.

- You don't have to worry about blow drying your hair straight, your straightener will take care of it if it's curly.

- It's better to let your hair dry naturally overnight or through the day, the heat from your blowdryer will damage your hair.

- Use clips to seperate your hair into layers to simplify the work.

- Run the straightener through each 1'' strand of hair twice, three times max, to ensure straightness.

- Use a very rich in moisture shampoo and conditioner to minimize damage from the heat in your straightener.

- Don't straighten your hair every day - overload in heat = dry, nasty hair.

I hope this helps you and your hair woes. If you need anything else, just ask. :-)

X0C0URT answered Sunday July 10 2005, 5:25 pm:
Well make sure you use straightening/smoothing shampoo and conditioner. Then after you straighten it put on a smoothing serum, like Frizz Ease by John Frieda. Usually when your straighten your hair it will only last a day, even for people who have hair that's already pretty straight. When you sleep on it or wash it that's definitely gonna ruin the straightening. Hope this helps!

You could try chemical straightening, but this is very bad for your hair. Of course, so is straightening it, but that is besides the point.

Try some cream before you blow dry it. I am not sure what it is called, but do that John Frieda makes some sort of cream that you can use before you straighten your hair to make it better.

After you straighten it, put more cream on, but only a little bit.

What kind of straightener do you have? I think ceramic ones are best.

Good luck.

hi! My hair is the SAME EXACT way...i love it sometimes, but hate it others. What i normally do is straighten it in layers and i use an oil called "Frizz-Ease Oil Serum" (you can get it at wal-mart and the cheap brand works just as well) use it on every layer after you srtaighten it, but not too much or your hair will look greasy and spray a little of some type of strong hold hair sray on every peice, brush it and spray it really good before you leave the house...that should last for at LEAST 2 days and it will still take a while, but that helps the frizzyness.

HyperactiveMiss answered Sunday July 10 2005, 4:57 pm:
If you want REALLY straight hair and you're willing to put time and money into it...I suggest you get a straightening perm. I got one about a year ago and I'm loving it! Read on if you're interested.

I straighten my hair chemically. Lucky for me though, my mom is a hair stylist. So for me, it's technically free. lol. So I can't really help you on the price, but I would say it costs more than a hundred dollars (professionally done). My mom did the straightening perm. on her last client for like 200-300 dollars. It might be cheaper elsewhere since my mom charges more because she doesn't like straightening hair (too much work).

I definitely do not recommend you to do it at home. Most likely if you have someone else do it for you at home, the product will be really bad for your hair, and the person doing your hair might screw it up accidentally. It's best to have someone professional do your hair with professional products, that way you'll avoid problems and it won't totally kill your hair. Trust me, it won't kill your hair if you get it professionally done with professional products. If you can't tell by now, I keep emphasizing that part. My hair is long, super straight, shiny, and healthy! So that's why I keep emphasizing that.

About how long it lasts...it depends on how curly/wavy your hair is and what product you're using. For me it took more than four hours, and my hair isn't that bad, just puffy and kinda wavy. For me, I had lots of sitting around and waiting time. So it might be a good idea to look at magazines or a book.

If you get it done professionally, it shouldn't hurt. It might burn or itch a little, but you'll barely notice it. Your hair stylist will probably check on you to see if you feel any burning or itching, so just be sure to let them know what you're feeling. The chemicals might make your hair a little lighter, if you don't mind. Mine used to be like jet black, and now it's kinda dark brown. I don't mind though, I think it's cool lol. You can see my picture on my advice column.

Oh yeah, and I almost forgot. I get my hair retouched every six months. Six months doesn't sound that great, but compared to having to use a straightener and blow drying my hair every day...six months is awesome! The perm will last forever, but of course, you need to get it retouched because your hair keeps on growing out ;p

If you're not willing to do that I'm sure someone else will suggest other ways to keep your hair straight.

Hope your hair turns out great!

Wow I know EXACTALLY where your coming from! ok, if you dont already...straighten your hair in layers it will last longer, or you can get your curls relaxed or get japanese hair straightning It works but after a while your roots will grow in curly...and its not that great for your hair but its an option, a hair straightner isnt going to make your hair straight forever but if you do it right it should stay good for a day or two even though it takes 1 and a half hours (i know where your coming from but beauty takes time) hope I helped!

I know exactly how you feel, my best friend has extremly curly hair but wanted it straight. You can go to an beauty salon or just a hair place, and you could get it permanently straight. It does work, i have seen it work, all you have to do is go or call the place, and ask them to permanently straighten your hair and they will..Search online where you live and hair salons

I would go to a hair salon and get them to straighten your hair because it tends to last longer after a hair stylist uses their special gels and creams and straigteners. You can also ask them what creams and gels you should use. In my opinion, I think Garnier Fructis smoothing milk or VO5 detangle and shine spray. Also I reccomned dove shampoo for all hairtypes. And when you get out of the shower, (when your hair is wet) spray hairspray on it. When your hair is dry- try smoothing frizzies down with LA looks hair gel. Good luck! :)
