Ok.. being a Christian means that you believe in God and that he sent his son,Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins, and the belief in, and relationship with Jesus Christ is what gets you into heaven. So.. the question is.. do you want to go to heaven? ..and the answer is yes!!

TheOldOne answered Friday July 22 2005, 3:03 pm:
You should become a Christian if you believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ and the truth of his teachings.

If you don't believe in those things, then don't become a Christian. It's really very simple.

There are, of course, other reasons. People join churches to get in with an in-crowd, to make friends, to get laid, or because everybody else is doing it.

I think many, maybe MOST Christians are Christians because that's how their parents raised them and they never question it - the same way that most Buddhists were raised by Buddhist parents, most Hindus were raised by Hindu parents, etc.. Straying from one's family and cultural religion is awfully rare, although I suspect that it's more common in the pluralistic and culturally-diverse United States than in most other countries. And even so, most Americans stay with some form of Christianity.

Please note, however, that since I am not a Christian I can't answer your question in terms of the personal religious feelings and faith that a Christian would.

So basically, search your heart. If it tells you that Christianity is for you, go for it. If you feel confusion, but some sort of spiritual need, perhaps you should investigate many different religions and philosophies. And if you feel fine, don't worry about it. :D

The purpose? The purpose, my friend, is to have everlasting life. Has no one ever told you that with out salvation you will spend eternity in hell. It is a real place and millions or more are going there that haven't believed in God. and how do you do this, you ask?...I'de be more than happy to tell you.

In John 3:7, jesus said that we must be born again.
"For all have sinned.." and we've come short of the glory of God.-Romans 3:23
Because we are sinners... we are condemned to death. Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death" This is where the eternity in hell comes in. But God loves us so much, He sent His son to die for us. This payed for all of our sins, but only if we repent of them and call upon His name to save us. If you believe that He died for you on the cross for your sin. You are saved. But if you don't.... you will be sent to Hell forever. It's easy, but you have to trust Him. Pray to Him now for salvation.

God Bless

The only way to make it to Heaven is by being a Christian. You know how I know
John 14:6
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. So you must go through Jesus in order to get into Heaven. Christianity isn't a religion it's a personal relationship between you and Jesus Christ and a lifestyle that you live. When you except Jesus into your heart then you are suppose to live by the spirit and not the flesh.
Galations 5:18
If you let the Holy Spirit lead you, the Law no longer has power over you.19The things your sinful old self wants to do are: sex sins, sinful desires(pornograhpy, homosexuality, child molestor, etc), wild living,20worshiping false gods(celebrities), witchcraft, hating, fighting, being jealous, being angry, arguing, dividing into little groups and thinking the other groups are wrong, false teaching(Buddhist, Hinud, Islam,Catholosim, etc),21wanting something someone else has, killing other people, using strong drink(alcohol), wild parties, and all things like these. I told you before and I am telling you again that those who do these things will have no place in the holy nation of God(HEAVEN). 22But the fruit that comes from having the Holy Spirit in our lives is: love, joy, peace, not giving up, being kind, being good, having faith, 23being gentle, and being the boss over our own desires. The Law is not against these things.
24Those of us who belong to Christ have nailed our sinful old selves on His cross. Our sinful desires are now dead. 25If the Holy Spirit is living in us, let us be led by Him in all things.26Let us not become proud in ways in which we should not. We must not make hard feelings among ourselves as Christians or make anyone jealous.
GOD HAS A PURPOSE 4 YOU. HE CREATED YOU FOR A REASON. DO YOU WANT TO FULFILL THE DESTINY FOR YOUR LIFE? If you do holla bac.

Honestly I don't know why people should become christians, I've always found it particualrily constraining.... ex. " you have to believex,y and z before you can go to heaven and only christians go to heaven." That is really quite the opposite of the way I see things... Perhaps they become christian because they need something solid with a strong foundation which that religion has, perhaps they want to feel united through their religion with other people. Whatever the reason, its not a bad thing to be christian, its just another group of people trying to get the same end nearly everyone else is working for... luck to you!

dancergirl678 answered Friday July 8 2005, 1:09 pm:
the reason why man was created, was to glorify God. But after adam sinned, the world became sinful and satan started to influence us and turn us away from God. Becoming a christian means that you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Savior and that He came down from heaven, into a human body, died for your penalty, and rose again the 3rd day. If you are a christian, you are dedicating your life to Christ, and when you die, you'll go to heaven. and if you don't accept Jesus and believe that He died for you, then you're not a christian. basically to answer your question *what is the purpose in being a christian* the purpose is to glorify God, dedicate you life to Him and to worship Him.

mylordwon answered Friday July 8 2005, 11:30 am:
God is a triune God. He is made up of three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We are made in God's image: soul, body, and spirit. When God created man (which includes woman - man with a womb) He made them perfect. He gave them a free will to make their own choices. The first man and woman (Adam and Eve) chose to sin (disobey God) and were then doomed to eternal punishment. But God loved people so much that he sent His son Jesus to die - to shed His blood to redeem people. Jesus died for all, but it is still each person's choice to accept His sacrifice. Those who do not accept Jesus will spend eternity in punishment. Those who do accept Jesus will spend eternity in heaven. There is no other way. That's it.

I am a Christian. The word Christian means "Follower of Christ". Christ means "Anointed One". Jesus is God's anointed one who God sent. In other words, God came to earth to save YOU because He loves you SOOOO much. To follow a different way is slapping God in the face and rejecting Him.

Those who are not Christian think that if someone calls them self a Christian they are claiming to be perfect. That is not true. What makes a Christian different is they are forgiven; not perfect. If the people who claim to be Christians have the blood of Jesus covering their sin, only then are they forgiven and a TRUE follower of Christ.

Having said all that, to answer your question: The purpose of being Christian is to serve the God who created you. One can only do that through the blood of Jesus. For those who desire real purpose in life, they choose to believe because only then will they see. That's called faith. You don't have to take my word for it. Get a bible and read what God has to say. Start in the book of John. As you seek truth, God will meet you and give you understanding.

It's their religion. In America, the third or fourth group of people who came here were very Christian, and our culture is pretty much based on what they did. Christianity is becoming less popular. Eventually, there might be no Christians at all. But that's what happens. Religions die, new ones take over.

daughterofwily answered Friday July 8 2005, 3:55 am:
In the loosest interpretations of the word, being a Christian is beleiving that Jesus was the son of God and believing in him will give you eternal life, etc. etc. So really you're only a Christian if you believe that.

The purpose of practicing the Christian faith would be to honor and have a relationship with God. How you would do this varies from sect to sect. Some branches of Christianity think that you are only saved from going to Hell by being a Christian--sometimes, only by being their kind of Christian.

If you're considering Christianity, ask yourself--do I believe in Jesus? Do I believe he was the son of God and had special powers? If you answer yes to these questions you may want to consider calling yourself a Christian.

But don't just join the nearest church! Don't go in blind. Look at the churches around you, consider their beliefs, and find the one that's right for you. The internet is great for this; you might want to check Google, Beliefnet, and Wikipedia for information on the churches you're considering.

If you don't really believe in Jesus, you're not really a Christian and joining a strictly Christian church would be a mistake. If you want to, you can even take parts of Christianity and other religions and sort of mold them into your own faith. But whatever you do, consider it carefully, and follow your heart. Good luck!

a friends response:
"why should someone become buddhist catholic or jewish? what you shouldnt do it for is other people but thats also a reason not to outright reject it. dont look to most christians to find the good in christianity because you will rarely find it. its easiest to find hypocricie in people that claim to be perfect followers of god. but if there was ever one reason to become a christian it is that regardless of the people that take the title of a christian, the best parts are the basic tennants given by christ. love others more than yourself. the best advice is to disregard christs 'followers' and look at the words of christ himself. go by that. the followers are usually hypocrirites but thats only because they cant live up to such a high standard of love. ignore the actions of other christians and focus more on the message. regardless of his followers no one can deny that christ himself was a good guy. if shes interested she should forgo the dogmas of mainstream christianity and just take a look at christs own words. if shes looking for religion id also suggest looking at buddhism. combine the ten commandments with the eightfold path and you have directed love for yourself others and god."
