im_falling_4_u answered Friday June 24 2005, 4:21 pm: i used to be afraid of shots but when you are there relax your arm by looking the other way and thinking of something that you love even if it's a pet or a boy it really works just don't think about it [ im_falling_4_u's advice column | Ask im_falling_4_u A Question ]

When you go to the doctor, ask him specifically what he's going to do and what it's going to feel like. He will be used to this behavior. It's perfectly normal. good luck

mushoku answered Friday June 24 2005, 11:19 am: Talk to the nurse/docotr, or someone else who is standing somewhere where you can look at them without seeing the shot. Tell them you're really nervous about shots, and that you need a distraction. I had to get an I.V. and it didn't work on the first hand (nervousness causes veins to go limp), so on the second one the nurse and I were in a conversation and she did it without me noticing much. JUST MAKE SURE YOU AREN'T WATCHING OR PAYING ATTENTION TO IT.
Lastly, make absolutely sure that you relax the muscle they give the shot to - if you don't, you'll be sore for sure. Then use that muscle afterwards, like excersize it a little, flex it, swing it around - this will help with the soreness. DO NOT TENSE IT WHILE THE NEEDLE IS IN.
xO_thAtS_hOTt_Ox answered Friday June 24 2005, 10:55 am: I'm also afraid of shots!! They scare me like crazy! I got my tetnis shot not too long ago though, and it really wasn't that bad! For reassurance, bring a bottle of water and a book, relax yourself before it's time to get it. When you get the shot, turn your head away, focus on something else in the room: a poster, anything! Think of your favorite place in the world, such as the beach, and think of what it's like to be there. Before you know it, it'll be over! Good luck, and hope I helped! ModernDayAudreyx3 answered Friday June 24 2005, 10:42 am: I'm scared to death of shots too so I know exactly how you feel. Whatever you do, don't build the shot up to be "Oh my gosh I'm so scared I'm gonna die!!" or anything negative. If you do, when the shot comes your gonna be even more nervous. Just relax and think of maybe a good time you had with uour friends or something your looking forward to. Take deep breaths, or anything to calm you down and take your mind off the shot. Don't worry, it's not bad at all. [ ModernDayAudreyx3's advice column | Ask ModernDayAudreyx3 A Question ]
chaos answered Friday June 24 2005, 9:20 am: I have a huge shot/taking blood problem that is totally embarrassing at my age. So these are the things I have tried:
1. Drink lots of water before you go if you can. If not drink them the day before.
2. Bring a Cd player, ipod, or other headphones to listen to while you get your shot.
3. Relax your breathing as much as possible.
4. Read a book.
sweetjewel answered Friday June 24 2005, 9:00 am: i hate shots also.. if you had seen me... anyways just stay calm and look the other way and hold someones hand. i think the fear is worst than the treatment [ sweetjewel's advice column | Ask sweetjewel A Question ]
K2204 answered Friday June 24 2005, 8:44 am: they arnt bad, and i dont think they hurt. you have to stop thinking that they will hurt, and think that they wont. or just not think about it at all. and dont watch when they give the shot.
S_C answered Friday June 24 2005, 8:17 am: I'm scared of any kind of needle, you should hear some of my stories...
Anyway, the last time I got my tetnus shot was back when I was in my first few months of 7th grade (now I'm going into 10th) but, it actually didn't hurt that bad. My Dr. asked me questions as she was doing it, plus me and my sister had our physicals at the same time, so she got her shot first, and her telling me that it didn't hurt was a definite nerve relaxer. But maybe just think of a song you know most, or all the words to, sing it in your head while they're doing it. Or do something difficult that will take a lot of thinking. Suck as counting down from 1570 by a weird number such as 51 or make the first number bigger and the second smaller (I just hit random numbers on the keybord, but it still works out where it'd be a little difficult to count down by)
Or if there's anyone in there besides the doctor, such as a parent or sibling, then start up a conversation with them to keep your mind off of it.
And at the end, me and my sister had to wait like 10 minutes, maybe longer, just to make sure there weren't any side effects to it. But it's normal. So trust me, from someone deathly afraid of shots, the tetnus wasn't so bad. [ S_C's advice column | Ask S_C A Question ]
Girlwithamansname answered Friday June 24 2005, 7:33 am: I've had a tetanus shot and it isn't any different from other jabs. Don't worry.
To help you relax whilst your being given the shot talk to the person doing it. They always ask questions to distract you so just answer them. You can talk complete nonsense if you want.
You might also want to try doing maths problems in your head like the 8 times table or counting down from 1000 in increments of 13. It's pretty distracting.
Some people also find rescue remedy a good way to keep them calm for exams etc so it might work for this. Ask the assisstant at your local "alternative" or health food shop.
