Discrimination
Well i'm a 16 year old girl, whose pretty,fun,and popular and I have alot of friends.But there is a problem that most people don't really see as a problem;i'm italian.Not everyone at my school, but a group of people constantly make jokes to me about my heritage.It all started on the first week on school when we had to write a paper about ourselfs (favorites,ethnic background,religion,ect.) so people could get to know us.well i put in there I was italian,and right after the class these girls came up to me and asked if my dad was in the mafia!what the hell is that about?no body has any respect now adays,and i guess it has to do with shows like the gottis and the sopranos(even tho i love them!) who give people the impression ALL italian-americans are like that,and that all italian-americans have dads like tony soprano.what should I do to get rid of this stigma and situation?thanks alot and I'll rate u a 5 if u don't act all bitchy about it!=)

Well chances are that they are'nt really makeing fun of your heritage but of you. They probally cant find anything to make fun of you about, but they are jealous so this is the only thing they can think of. Just learn to be yourself and not let it bother you. Be proud of who you are dear!

Your heritage is your heritage. You can't control it anymore than you can control when the sun sets. Next time people try to make a joke out of it, ask them how that is funny. Don't do it snotty, just casually ask them. It's really hard to hate someone who doesn't act like a bitch.

I totally agree with you. i'm not italian but i have friends that are of all different races and they are all great.i hate it when people stereotype different races. but thats how people are nowadays and there isn't much you can do about it. kids can b cruel but dont let them get you down. :)

That's definitely not respectful and these people should never discriminate you, just because you are Italian. These people are just morons who waste their social time, teasing people, especially one's nationality. See, I'm Polish, and people would make fun of the fact that my mom had an accent and it was funny to them when it wasn't too me. Stand up for yourself and tell them that this isn't funny at all and they shouldn't be wasting time, making fun of you. If nothing changes, then you should talk to a trusted teacher about this and let them take care of it. Hope I helped :)

I normally wouldn't advice anyone to look down on others, but LOOK DOWN ON THE THEM. Pity their ignorance. They know little. It is your role to educate the ignorant if you so choose to take on the role. You know there is more to your heritage than mafia and spaghetti.
while i was going to college in Texas, a good friend of mine was Vietnamese. He looked VERY Vietnamese. Dark, inset eyes, dark brown skin, he often crouched in an odd squat that you only see Asian rice workers crouch in. He did not fit into Texas culture by any means. But he believed deeply that there was a reason for everything. There was a reason that he was in college in Texas. He taught hundreds of people, Vietnam veterans included, that not all Vietnamese are what they were portrayed as on tv during the 70's. He broke down the walls between the social majority and the social minority. He went on the marry a beautiful, blonde haired former Miss Texas, and he is the most popular, successful man I know.
The two of you, me, and the others out there, represent the American dream.

Stand up to those girls and tell them your happy to be italion and that you proud of where you came from. Everyone had a haritage, and im sure some of those girls are part italion. Tell them that your dads NOT in the mafia, and that they should worry about their own fathers. Also italion people are awsome, i for one love italion guys! haha~ u seem like a REALLY nice girl! and I know how it feels. I am greek and ever since My Big Fat Greek Wedding came out people make fun of me. And I'm captain of the cheerleading squad. ;) I am also italian so.... the best advice i have for you is to just lauh right along with them. Eventually they'll get over it. Sorry, its the best i got!

I know how you are feeling because i am mexican and i get all the steryo types for being mexican and get called a beaner and wetback. The best thing to do is ignore them becuase they are very immature. Don't let it get to you too much because they are gettin the best of you if they see it bothering you. The thing that would make them mad and possibly stop is if u laugh when they tell the jokes because if they see you laughing too then they know they have to find something else to try to bring you down and most people like that aren't smart enough nor do they want to find something else about you to try to make fun of. Keep your head up and be happy!

geez, looks like they need to take a look at their family tree, i bet you they've got some italian in there & even if they don't, they really don't need to be making fun of you. if they have to spend their time making fun of your heritage...well then i feel sorry for them, just remember that you're above that and that you don't have to sink that low. And that's great that you've got pride in your heritage, keep that in mind too if they make fun of you. But if they don't stop, just ask them straight up "what's wrong with being italian?" i bet you they won't be able to come up with an answer & if they do say something like italians are mafia members or w/e tell them they need to get rid of the stereotypes and lay off. Just don't like completely blow up when they make fun of you because then they'll realize that they're getting to your nerves & they'll probably keep it up. Hey, I totally know how you feel! I'm jewish and in my school a lot of people make fun of people for being jewish even if they think there jokeing and trying to act cool its still very hurtful to me. Like you said a lot of people dont have respect, all over the world racism against another race is happening a lot lately. If people make fun of you like really badly you have to go to your principal and tell them, no one should treat anyone with disrespect because they have a different heritage or religion. Dont be afraid to tell someone if a peer of yours is hurting your feelings or makeing you feel uncomfortable.

ummm... try to talk to an adult or tell the ppl that are being bitchy towards you about your heritage that you are proud of your heritage and dont show that it bothers you that they are making fun of you because of your race of people. if you dont show any signs of it bothering you then they will eventually stop because they realize that it doesnt bother you.

Do these morons realize that the Mafia is Sicilian, not Italian? I mean, "MAFIA" is an acronym in Italian (as that's what they speak on Sicily) that, when translated, is "Death to the French". Take that bit of trivia as you will.
You've just found out that many people are really, really stupid. I bet if you looked at the heritage of many of those who just made fun of you, you'd find French (hey, why don't you surrender to me now!), Germans (you Nazi scum!), Russian (Commie Pinko!), English (ha ha, the US defeated you in that war!), and many other nationalities that I could name and dish out more stupid things that jackasses could say.
Me, I'm euromutt - German, French, English, Welsh, Russian, Polish, and supposedly Italian in there somewhere, though I've never seen it on a family tree.
Basically, tell the morons who say stupid things to you to stop watching so much television and to get a clue. Ask them what their heritage is, and if they can't answer, ask them why.
