Question Posted Wednesday December 1 2004, 4:18 pm
My mother bought me a beta fish (a Japanese fighting fish) and I have no idea how to take care of it. I got a book on how to take care of it, but you have to decode it (meaning I don't understand a word of it) The local veterenarians don't really know how to take care of these fish because not alot of their clients have fighting fishes. Does anyone on Advicenators know ANYTHING about these fishes? Do you know any sites where I can find information?
xxBrOkEnxx answered Sunday January 2 2005, 12:11 pm: ok well you have to give the fish one or two of those small pebbles..and i think the fish has to be in 70 degree water..and the longer the fins are the healthier it is..and for cleaning you could just take them out and put them in a big cup and clean the tank..make sure you dont have any other fish in it because it will kill it and you dont have to have those air things cause it can breath from going up to the water level..make sure you have atleast a half of an inch so they could come up...or you could go to the pet store and ask if they have a booklet of beta fish..or go on google [ xxBrOkEnxx's advice column | Ask xxBrOkEnxx A Question ]
XoLoVeYaXo435 answered Saturday January 1 2005, 1:24 pm: feed it beta fish food cleen its tank with water cleener put it in a tank with glass and dont put it with other males bc they will kill each other if u see small bubbles on the water that means he wants to mate give him a female and if u see white things in the bubbles after awhile with the female those are eggs than carefully take the female out of the tank and put it in another tank bc she will eat the eggs and feed the male 4 times a day so he wont eat the eggs either but the males hardly kill the babies just do this and they will live also you remove the female bc she will kill the male too after they get eggs [ XoLoVeYaXo435's advice column | Ask XoLoVeYaXo435 A Question ]

ShOrTnSwEeT42094 answered Wednesday December 29 2004, 9:51 am: I had a Beta fish years ago. They're pretty simple to take care of.If you can,the best thing to do is to keep the fish by itself.NEVER put a male and a female together, because after they mate, the female will kill the male. You also can't have two males together because they will kill each other.Hey,they don't call them fighting fish for nothing! They can do fine in an aquarium with other tropical fish, just be careful if you have fish that are considered "fin nippers" such as Danio's and Tiger Barb's.I had a male in a tank with both Danio's and Tiger Barb's tho,and they never had a problem living together. As far as maintnence is is concerned,it's basically the same as any other fish, just keep the water clean(or if you have a tropical fish tank where the Beta fish will be with other tropical fish, keep the filter and rocks clean),and feed them when needed.I hope this helps you out a little!! marlinsqt23 answered Sunday December 19 2004, 3:13 pm: a beta fish is pretty easy to take care of...follow the directions on the food container and if u can find a specific food just for these fish...remember to change the water in the bowl or tank and most important put the beta fish alone in the bowl without any other fish...hope this helps xoxo [ marlinsqt23's advice column | Ask marlinsqt23 A Question ]
elrodgurl7888 answered Sunday December 12 2004, 8:15 am: Betas are one of the simplest pets to take care of. all you do is feed it according to the food package( don't feed it more than the package tells you to). About once a week take a cup and get the fish out of the tank. pour the water out of the tank and then fill the tank back up with water. let the water sit for a least a hour so the water gets to room tempreature and its as simple as that. HuGzNKisSeZ69 answered Thursday December 2 2004, 12:53 pm: Heyy- the vets in yuor area must be a little slow cuz Beta Fish are realllly common and easy to take care. OK first rule: NEVER have more then 2 in one tank. They kill eachother and in japan they use them to fight like pitbulls, i know weird giht. Just go to your local perstore and buy the food with a picture of them on it. They don't need a big tank at all, i kept mine i a glass bowl. They are very violent though, mine killed ITSELF when it saw its reflection in the mirror. So just clean it often and feed it, it could live for up to 3 years i heard that was a long life span. Kr4z3y_Ch3lly answered Thursday December 2 2004, 4:17 am: Hey, Beta fish are SO simple to take care of. I have two and i've had them for a year now! Ok well you take care of them like you would a normal fish. If you have two dont let them see each other or keep them at a good distance to where they wont puff up their gills when they see each other. If you let them fight they will get stressed out and apperantly one of the fish will die. So what you do is get a fish bowl (i prefer bigger then those teeny tiny one cause i think that justs wrong having something live in something that small) put rocks in there obiously and a plant..It needs a plant (doesnt have to be real). The kind of food I buy mine is called "Hikari Betta Bio-Gold" but im sure you can buy any beta fish food out there, the directions on how much to feed them is on the back. Also dont use your regular tap water to fill the bowls, it has to be purifyed or get some of this liqid stuff that you put in the water its called "NovAqua" it takes out all the chlorine and copper etc. Clean there bowls like every month or so. If you need anymore explanation about caring for your betta ask a person who works at a pet store. They might tell you the same thing i did but at least its a shot! Hope i helped. Striker6909 answered Wednesday December 1 2004, 10:30 pm: LOL! well yeah I do... never put them in front of a mirror cause they are extremely competitive and tend to like to hit the glass and stuff... well otherwise I suppose you should just feed them change their water but only add a little bit of water at a time or else they'll die from different water... and keep them in their own water when you empty the tank.. ilovehissmile answered Wednesday December 1 2004, 9:14 pm: Just put it in a nice clean bowl with room tempature water and add fake plastic things like beads n stuff to it.Then you go to a store and get beta fish food. Never put more than one in a bowl theyll kill eachother. Theyre very territorial fish. If you really want them to show their colors put a mirror or another bowl with another beta fish in it next to it. Theyre colros show more then [ ilovehissmile's advice column | Ask ilovehissmile A Question ]

SmoothiesFknRock answered Wednesday December 1 2004, 7:30 pm: I used to have a Beta fish. It's name was wing wong. Then it died cuz I put it in a tank with my dwarf frog. Whatever you do, don't put it in a tank with a frog. If you do- plan on giving it a chinese funeral. =(

southparkcutie07 answered Wednesday December 1 2004, 5:53 pm: I have a beta fish and i can help you.....It's not hard at all. Ok....you have to put it in Distilled water, and you can go to Pet Co or some other pet place and get the food for them, and there is this other stuff, but i forgot what it was called, but it help's keep their water clean. They like small spaces, so u can just buy a small fish bowl at a pet store, and clean the water about once a week. Hope it helps!
