any suggeestions on how to lose weight in the theights and arms..will lifting weiths and weight training help?
15/f
Not really. You cannot lose weight specifically in the arms or thighs, or any other part of the body for that matter.
Despite the myth, which is very prevalent here on advicenators, fat loss cannot be targetted. The human body works in such a way that it can only generally lose weight. The fat is pulled off from your whole body, and genetics influence if certain areas remain bigger or smaller than others. The only way to lose weight is to create a calorie deficit, so area specific exercises (which dont burn a lot of calories) are less important than cardio, full body workouts etc.
That being said, weight training is great exercise and can be a valuable part of staying fit. I would encourage anyone to do it. However, it should involve the whole body not just specifc areas.
what is the most beautiful combination of words in the english language?
"Would you like fries with that?"
Hey... I've been thinking lately. This isn't meant to be inflammatory or argumentative, I'd just like different opinions.
How could heaven be heaven if you know that 4 billion people are roasting in Hell just because they picked the wrong religion? I don't get that... I mean, if I were in heaven and I knew that, it would be Hell for me. And I know you can say, "well they chose wrong", but that doesn't seem to me like a reason for endless pain and suffering. There are perfectly good people down there. Thoughts?
You have touched upon one of the most troubling concepts on the topic of religion in general, not just Christianity.
The fact of the matter is that most people do not choose their religion. They may think they do, but in reality it has been fed to them either by society or by their parents. So you cant even say "they chose wrong". Its more often "darn, born on the wrong continent... shucks".
I find it interesting that you only consider the aspect of you, in heaven, thinking of those punished. Have you considered the possibility that the roles might be reversed? After all, none of these religions have offered proof. I would dare anyone to give a valid reason why the outcome in the Bible is more likely than the outcome from another religion (and not just the major ones mind you, also the ones we destroyed over the years).
Well you asked for thoughts, and didnt get much more than that from me lol. I think you presented a very good question, which can be looked at from different angles. To me it makes the whole heaven and hell thing sounds rather man-made. A way to keep followers in check. Thats my thought anyway.
Good luck figuring all this out.
are there any foods that make your metabolism faster?
Hot and spicy food has that effect. But its nothing huge though, so dont rely too much on it.
someone please get me diet foods! like what can i eat exactly for breakdast lunch dinner? snacks? please help.
Well here are some meal examples:
- oats (50- 100g) in skim milk
- A whole egg, a few egg whites, a slice of whole wheat bread and a piece of fruit
- Cottage cheese preferably low fat (about 150- 250 grams) + piece of fruit + a few walnuts
- Skinless chicken/ turkey breast, tuna or other lean meat(about 100-150grams) + 50g whole wheat pasta or 75 grams basmati rice, or a baked potato, or a slice of whole wheat bread + a small salad or something similar
- Other things to add here and there might be things like oily fish, a few olives, unsalted nuts of all sorts (in small quantities), flax seeds, small amounts of a good oil (e.g. canola, olive oil etc). These things will give you the good kind of fats you need.
You will notice I put a range on the weights of the foods above. Thats since the size of the meal depends upon your calorie needs, which in turn are dependent on your weight and activity level.
I would not bother with the traditional breakfast- lunch- dinner. Aim for 5 meals a day instead, eating every 3- 4 hours. You can snack occasionally, but with this sort of meal plan I would say its preferable you dont.
Good luck.
I am really bored.People tell me to get a life. How do I do that. Please tell me how I should get a life, get rid of my boredom, meet new people and make new friends. Any answers are appreciated
Well the first thing to do is to be more active. You need to find the things that you enjoy doing. Usually people who are considered boring tend to be rather unenthusiastic about things. They tend to not want to do things that other people enjoy doing.
So, go out there and experiment. Try out different sports and see if you find any interesting. Team sports would be best here. There are all sorts of clubs out there you could try out. Dont be afraid to try things you wouldnt ordinarily consider. Take a self defense class, or join a youth organisation (e.g. something political, or involving social issues). Also try new games, particularly those your friends might be into.
The general idea is not to sit at home in front of the tv or the computer all the time. Get out there and socialise. If you dont like the activity you have chosen, just pick another. The thing is that as soon as you are in a group sharing a common interest, friendships will usually occur quite naturally. You have to make yourself available though, and the only way to do that is to involve yourself and be enthusiastic about what you are doing.
how do u become a good fighter without lessons?
Agree with answer below. Best of all though, get a buddy and spar together. Focus particularly on grappling techniques as they are the most effective. Dont get me wrong, punching and kicking is great, but if you cant groundfight, you cant fight at all.
First thing to learn and master is balance. A sparing partner is invaluable since you can feel what its like to have to deal with someones bodyweight.
Without lessons I think the best thing to do is focus on elementary techiques. Often they are the most effective anyway. Basic takedowns, basic chokes, defending against chokes (e.g. developing the reflex to keep your chin down), simple punches, low kicks, and surviving on your back (search youtube for "the Gracie guard" and you will get some examples).
Otherwise watch videos. Personally I recommend early UFCs (particularly 3 and 5) before they added all the rules. You can learn a lot from those guys. Shadowboxing is great, as is practicing low knee high kicks. When you see a video or learn a new technique, visualise the scenario in your mind. Its amazing how much that can help when you have to do the real thing.
I really need to lose like 10 lbs. I want to do it unhealthy. I told my mom and she was like ok. So please help me. Because I need tips to resist food.
The advice people were trying to give you is for your own good, and you respond by rating them 1s. Even though they care more about your health than you do.
Why would you want to lose weight in an unhealthy way. Those effects are temporary... they will not last. You will likely end up losing muscle mass in the process as well (which will make it even harder to lose weight in the future).
Ten pounds you can lose in a couple of months in a totally healthy way. You can improve your health, energy levels etc. and you can keep the weight off. Just follow some simple dietary guidelines such as eating often, balanced, low on saturated fats, less than you burn etc. Throw in some exercise and thats pretty much it.
Im not even sure what sort of unhealthy way you had in mind. If it was a starvation type diet, well... lets just say thats the fitness equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot. Harmful and uneccessary.
okay so i intake about 600 calories a day and i weigh about 118 and im 5'4. 2 questions. am i fat? and is 600 calories a day okay i'v been doing it for about 6 months so what would happen if i increased it would i gain weight?
1 You are not fat. I dont see how you could ask that actually.
2 You are eating way way too little. Its totally unhealthy and you risk doing damage to yourself.
3 I will be honest with you. If you increased the calories there is a small chance that in the short term you might gain some weight. Your metabolism is probably rock bottom due to your terrible diet for that last half year.
However, you have to do it. You need this nutrition particularly if you are young. Also even if you do gain a little weight, it will stabilise as soon as your body gets used to a normal pattern of eating.
What you should do is start to eat every 4 hours. Fit in at least 4 balanced meals a day, in the very least double your calories and spread them evenly accross these meals. A little exercise wouldnt be bad either, but first make sure you start to eat right.
The sooner the better.
hi, i was just wandering if theres a sport out there which is a cross between pro-wrestling and boxing? i know stuff like ufc is a mix between amateur wrestling and boxing, but its in a cage and its different right? any help will be appreciated. thank you.
First off the UFC is not a style. Martial artists with a wide variety of styles fight in it, but there is no specific UFC style. I also think a few of the wrestlers that have competed there (e.g. Dan Severn ) might take real offence at your "amateur" comment lol. But I will grant you that now they all seem to look kind of the same, and with all the bogus rules they added it has become a huge joke.
Anyway, back to your question. There are many hybrid martial arts out there. Shootfighting is one example. Its a mix of wrestling, kick or thai boxing and ju- jutsu. Very powerful matial art imo.
I know theres someting called shoot wrestling, and something called shoot boxing. Both of these are hybrids that include wrestling and boxing as far as i know. Another possibility is pitfighting, which should incorporate those two elements if Tank Abbot is anything to go by. Try and check those out and see if its what you are looking for.
As for the cage thing. Those are just the rules of that particular competition. It has little to do with the martial art itself. In UFC they chose the Octagon, as opposed to the classic boxing ring used in competitions like Pride and K1, because they felt that shape would give least advantage to any specific style. Thats before they turned it into a commercial sport of no value :)
Anyway, hope I helped a bit. If the examples i gave dont match what you are looking for, research "hybrid martial arts" on the net and you will get a ton of examples.
Good luck.
Okay so I'm 15 years old, 5'4", 110 lbs. Normal weight, right? Yeah. My mother keeps giving me a hard time about my eating habits just because I tend to eat one meal and maybe one or two snacks per day. It's not like I want to lose weight, I just don't feel like eating most of the time and I don't get hungry very often. Yet she bugs me about eating all the time. Why should I eat when I'm honestly not hungry and don't feel like eating? That's gluttony, which is a sin and very unhealthy for you. I'm sorry, but I just don't do that or eat when I'm bored. I think it's gross to do that. How can I get her to understand that I'm not anorexic or anything, just not that hungry?
Im afraid your mom is right. Its unhealthy to eat once a day (even with your one or two snacks). In fact, its easier to remain in shape if you eat more often. There are many reasons why what you are doing is bad I will try to go over a few.
You should understand, that one of the reasons you dont get hungry more often is because you have conditioned your body into this bad habit. Your metabolism has been slowed down, which is a normal defensive process the body has when it reckons there isnt a lot of food available.
The reason why that is a bad thing is that the body will also have a tendency to digest muscle stores when in need of energy (since muscle is easier to digest then fat). Loss of muscle has a bad effect on the metbolism as well, so the situation may get worse.
Secondly you are not providing your body with the neccessary nutrients that you need to grow. You are a teenager and in a crucial point in your life. You need plenty of nutrition, both in quantity, frequency and quality.
Finally, eating often will give you more energy. It will let you operate on a higher level, both mentally and physically.
So you see, its not a question of gluttony, but it certainly is a question of health. Your body needs to be fed right. Ideally 4-6 meals evenly spread out over the day i.e. eating every 3 to 4 hours. Each meal being small and balanced (containing all essential macronutrients). Thats the way to a healthy body.
Sorry if thats not what you wanted to hear. However, sometimes life is like that and we make mistakes. The bottom line is your mother is looking out for your best interests and she happens to be right. Work with her on this and soon you will feel better I can almost guarantee it.
Good luck
I like Firefox much better than IE but when ever I click a link it opens in IE. How can I change it to open in Firefox instead while having both installed on my computer?
Open mozilla, click tools at the top. Then in the "main" category (which should be the one that pops up first) theres a box that says "always check to see that firefox is your default browser...". Next to it theres a button called "check now".
Click it and it should ask you if you want to make it default, or it will change it automatically.
im 5'3" and i weigh 145 but i have alott of muscle. should i still lose weight though? and how much?
Use the mirror and dont worry so much about the numbers. I agree that more information (such as your sex) would have been useful, but even then bone structure/ build, fat% etc vary considerably from person to person.
If you dont have a lot of fat on you, you arent overweight. Irrespective of what number comes out on the scale.
I took an IQ test a few minutes ago over the internet and my score was 125. I realize this is pretty good, but would it be more accurate (and higher) if I was 18+ ? I am only 15.
Ok, I read everyone's answers more or less and I just wanted to add/ clarify a few points. First of all I think people (not just the columnists, but schools/workplaces/experts etc) are mixing the concept of practical intelligence and IQ. IQ is not supposed to measure what we term intelligence in every day language. By that definition we mix a lot more factors into it.
The problem is that some experts have decided not to agree on this. I personally much prefer those who identify IQ as a measure of intelligence, and use other terms for things like linguistic aptitude etc.
However, no proper IQ test should mix language, memory, maths etc into it. It should have NOTHING that could benefit directly from studying, it should be a measure of your raw ability to reason. For that reason, a real IQ test is primarily based on patterns in shapes and pictures.
Now onto your question. You should also know that there is more than one IQ scale. So 125 can range from good to very good. If you took an adult test as a kid your result should be even better.
Secondly, IQ tests on the net vary from pretty accurate to totally ridiculous. I havent taken one in years, but back then I tried a bunch. If the test had anything like what I mentioned earlier forget it.
A real IQ test does NOT need to take hours. Whatever you are testing in those many hours is not IQ. Take MENSA for instance. In case you dont know them they are a club for the top 2% of the population (raw IQ). Their test is 40 minutes I believe. Thats plenty because all they test is clinical IQ for lack of a better word. The way it was intended to be... your raw reasoning power and nothing else.
If you are really interested, take the official MENSA test. It will cost some money, and you will have to show up and take it under supervision. However you are in and out of there within an hour, and you will know with certainty if you have a high IQ or not. Heck you might even gain entrance to an exclusive club :)
Ok so i want to get fit, not like beastly body builder or anything, but i wanna tone myself.
So i need some sugestions for workouts and explanation on how to do them for my Abs, Pecks, Biceps, Triceps, Back, and my legs.
If you have awebsite thats fine i had alot of trouble findin a good site so if you can give me some workouts and detailed descriptions I'd appreciate it. thanks
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.htm
Theres a ton of exercises, complete with descriptions. Just click on the body part. Now, setting up a good programme, thats a different matter altogether...
One tip, lift hard and dont worry about looking like a bodybuilder. That never happens overnight, so you might as well go all out until you reach the body that you would like to have.
Oh and also in your list you forgot shoulders.
Good luck.
Edit: I seem to have overlapped with Mike... Oh well I guess you get the website twice :)

Hi, I LOVE to exercise but I can't seem to keep a flat stomach without being flat chested. When I am not exercising a lot and my stomach starts to get more fat on it, my boobs are only a 34 B. I'm fine with this, but when I exercise and get a flat stomach (which I like the look of) I am 34 A. There doesn't really seem to be a "happy medium."
In your opinion, which looks better? Decent sized boobs and slightly large stomach? Or smaller boobs and flat stomach? I am on the fence.
Thanks! =)
Despite all the fitness advice I have given, I am ashamed to admit I would have to say boobs. Though thats also because a totally falt stomach is not really all the important in my opinion.
I am 29 yrs old. I dont have any friends.I have a wonderful boyfriend who is very outgoing and confident.Every now and then he says I need to make some friends. I cant. What do I do, call some girl up and say will you be my friend?? How cheesy. I go out with him where his friends hang out but no one engages conversation with me.They do for a minute then go. I am an attractive person that is not the problem. But how does someone who was abused as a child, not allowed to have friends, phonecalls or sleepovers, and a 10 year marriage where I was not allowed to work or have friends, change and get friendships. It seems so out of reach for me.Help!!!
Everyone already made some very good suggestions. I just wanted to add a little bit to the "common interest" theme. Apart from trying to find common interests with the people you meet, you could also try to seek out groups that are interested in what you like.
For example, do you like any sports? or do you like reading or painting? There is bound to be something that you enjoy. Find out what that is, and join a club. You will automatically be put into contact with people you have something in common with. It will make "first contact" a little easier, particularly since you are supposed to socialise in a club.
Good luck.
What is the difference?
I am seriously confused,
because I've heard that Agnostic means you don't believe in anything, and Athiest means you make fun of God.
Is that right?
Im an agnostic. Basically it means I have the joy of arguing with both camps :)
Seriously though, very generally, agnostic belief is based on the notion that there isnt enough information upon which to make a categoric decision about God's existence. Basically, there is certainly no proof that God exists and, similarly, there is no proof he doesnt either. In other words we acknowledge that we simply do not know.
Athiests on the other hand categorically do not believe in the existance of a diety.
To see some of the different kinds of agnostic beliefs, and also compared more thoroughly with theists and athiests see:

I'm pretty good at volleyball (well better than alot of people.. not to brag.. but I've always liked the sport, and I even played it in the summer, at like some good rec place.). however in soccer, i have been playing for like 3 seasons, and im not the best player.. like I dont know all those tricks and junk, but I'm determined.. yet lack alot of skills, lol. I'm a 7th grade girl, and I'm going to high school soon.. and Im wondering which do I pick? because the soccer and volleyball seasons are both in the fall... that sucks because I love both, but soccer better.. but im not that good at it! what to pick! .. I wish I started soccer earlier :/
Well this is going to be a question that will recieve a ton of biased answers. So heres my biased answer :)
Choose soccer. First off I think its a good idea because you like it more at the moment. The other reason, is that I think that this is a sport that is so much more likely to keep you interested in the future.
I have played both sports and enjoyed doing so. However, I think soccer is on a totally different level. Volleyball tends to be a bit more limited... you need to excel at a few things and then its mainly a matter of jumping higher, hitting harder etc. Im not saying there isnt a teamwork element to it, there is, but its on a rather simple level.
Soccer on the other hand evolves radically every few years. New formations, styles, player types... its almost a totally different game today than it was in the 80s and even the 90s. The tactical possibilities, the radically different player types and so on, make soccer something you can spend a lifetime learning.
Anyway, thats my view on it. I think thats the reason soccer is the national sport of virtually every country in the world.
