Favourite quotes of the moment:
The children of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years - Even in biblical times men wouldn't ask for directions!
Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. whatever we do to the thread, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. - Chief Seattle.
We spend the first 12 months of a child's life teaching them to walk and talk. We spend the next 12 years telling them to sit down and shut up!
As you slide down the bannisters of life, may the splinters never be pointing the wrong way.
May you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.
I've been very happily married since August 1980 to a wonderful man and have beautiful twin girls, now aged 31. Both are married to wonderful young men and one of our girls has recently made us grandparents to a beautiful, smart and feisty granddaughter. I studied geology with the Open University. I am retired from being a manager in a large UK based insurance company which I actually quite enjoyed. (How sad is that?). I love anything to do with the environment and wildlife and try to do my bit for preservation and conservation. I would like there to be a decent world for our grandchildren to inherit. I also have CFS so find life a bit of a challenge at times but always hope for better health in the future.
I have a deep interest in the spiritual and the paranormal worlds, having experienced several incidents myself, and have been involved in meditation groups and groups that (safely) explore the paranormal. There is more to this life than we would normally credit, so an open mind is always the best option. You're not so likely to get caught by surprise!
I have a deep fascination for anything to do with Ancient Egypt, as you can probably tell by my name. I have statues and paintings all around the house. As my hubby has a similar interest in Native Americans, we tend to have a lot of unusual wall decorations, like a tomahawk.
I love cars, especially vintage ones, but my all time favourite has to be the Bugatti Chiron, what a car!
I have had a lot to do with animals over the years. I have fostered many, helped to set up a wildlife charitable hospital and raised a diverse range of young animals from bats to fox cubs and different species of birds, even a baby deer! I have had great pleasure in sharing my life and home with a number of animals over the years, most of them rescues. I am currently sponsoring an Amur Tiger, they are such beautiful cats and desperately need help, there are so few of them left. I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to meet some Aye-Aye's and Livingstone's Bats, a truly wonderful experience. We now have three cats, Oliver and Mollie, a brother and sister, he's a ginger and she's a tortoiseshell and a black and white called Daisy. She arrived in a taxi and was left on our doorstep in a cat carrier with the message that 'they knew we loved cats and would be good to her'. She has settled down well and gets on wonderfully with the other two.
If you have a pet that is showing ANY signs of illness or distress, please, please, please take it to a vet! Even if finance is an issue, work that out later. It is cruel to leave an animal suffering for any reason. Most animals do not show signs of illness until they have been ill for some time, basic instinct tells them it is a display of vulnerability, and certain death in the wild. Their instincts have not caught up with domesticity.
I do feel that we should all treat others as we would wish to be treated. Bad karma comes back to haunt us.

I am very confused about religion. My family is Christian and believe in God, but aren't too religious. I was never told to believe in anything.
I believe in God. BUT I also believe in Karma. Is there any sort of name or religion for that? they are two different beliefs and religions, but I believe in both.
Buddhism believes in Karma, so I have included some web sites for you to look at.

i recently got two dwarf hamsters, and the female, i think it is a female, which i had for two days, is now hiding in a part of a maze i got for them, she hasn't been exersing much, and i feel she maybe sick. i have already seperated the male from the cage when i first thought that she might be sick or pregnant. she is very hard to coach out of that part of the maze, and when she isn't in there she is laying in her spot in the cage or briefly nawing on some food then back to her spot, this started about4 hours ago. if the symptoms sound like anything that you might reconize
There could be a health issue there, if she is still like it after another day, she should be checked over by a vet, particularly if there are any other symptoms or any more develop. It is quite normal for them to hide away during the day as they are nocturnal, although they can occasionally be seen out and about during the day. But if she isn't moving much at night, it does sound as though there is something wrong, as they are normally quite active then.
You could try tempting her out in the evening with some treats, however, greens such as lettuce should be fed to her in very small quantities as it can give rodents diarrhoea. If you give her fruit or salad vegetables, they need to be introduced slowly for the same reason. You could also try her on small dog biscuits, bread or toast and low/no sugar breakfast cereals.
Bear in mind that the natural instinct of an animal is hide illness as long as possible, as in the wild this shows vulnerability, which makes them easy prey. So an animal that starts to look or act ill is usually worse than you would think.
Hope that helps and good luck.
What can people do for cardio inside there house?
dont suggest a treadmill.
Running up and down the stairs, you could carry something heavy to increase the effort needed.
A cardio exercise video/dvd. Some housework gives you a good workout, cleaning windows energetically, washing floors, moving furniture around etc, and you get a super clean house at the end of it. If you strap some weights to you whilst doing all this, that will also increase the cardio vascular imput.
Hope that helps.

I am in love with this guy. And he feels the same toward me. However, he is better than me in every way. He's smarter, better-looking, and so on. This makes me feel inferior and insecure. I feel I'm not worthy of his love. I feel extremely small when I'm with him. I wish I could be as intelligent as him in order to be more worthy of his love. I hate myself. I hate my shortcomings. My biggest fear is that he would abandon me because of the fact I'm not as great as him. As a genius, he has every reason to despise me. He outshines me in every area. Whenever I detect a tiny sign that he might ignore/hate me, I feel like dying. Because of these, I'm not myself when I'm with this guy. I care TOO much about how he thinks of me. I appear very nervous, hypersensitive, and stupid. And this makes things worse. I am over-conscious about every word I say to him. I fear something I say would sound silly according to him and that he would despise me. I feel I'm just a silly little girl in his eyes. I know in fact he loves me. But I can never enjoy his love because of my feeling of inadequacy. I feel I need to be a much, much better person to deserve his love. I always try to be smarter so as to be "equal" to him, yet only end up making a fool of myself. This drives me crazy. What can I do now?
No one is better than anyone else, we all have different qualities. This is what makes us special to each other. I would think that you have qualities that are very special to him, quite possibly one of them being your capacity for sensitivity. It is a great thing to have if used in the right way, that is to enhance your personality not to put it on auto destruct.
Don't try to be like him, it's more likely your differences that attracted him. He may be a genius but no one wants to be that all the time. You probably give him the chance to be normal and just feel loved for himself, not for what he can do.
Talk to him and let him tell you about all the great things he loves about you. Then accept them and acknowledge that you are a worthwhile person. It may be hard to start with, but little steps towards acceptance makes it easier.
Hope that helps and good luck.
Just wanted to know what ALL of the symptoms of and early pregnancy are. (Ranging from about 2 weeks to 6 weeks) Thanks!

I'm going shopping in Oxford Street, London for my birthday. I've read up on it and most say that the main problem is that it's incredibly crowded. I'm going on a Saturday, which is obviously the worst time of the week to go there. I've never been before so I'm kind of worried that it'll ruin the experience, is it really that bad? Does anyone have any tips?
It is crowded but it depends on when your birthday is. If it's out of the tourist season it won't be so bad, but there will still be plenty of people. If you avoid the rush hours it should be better. Try to look on it as fun and an experience. If it's cold make sure you wear something that you can take off if you go into one of the big department stores as they tend to be quite warm. If you go with someone, try to hold onto them in the busier areas, this should ensure you don't get parted.
Keep your bag under your arm and keep your hand on the clasp, don't put a bag on your back, there are pick pockets that will take advantage of anything not kept close to you.
Hope that helps and I haven't put you off more, London is a great experience, enjoy. Have a wonderful birthday.
Last night I cheated on my boyfriend.
I kissed another guy.
I feel really bad about it.
How can I clear my consience without telling him?
I really don't want to tell him.
What should I do?
I would say it depends on the reason for telling him. If it is because you feel it is something he should know for his own benefit, then tell him. If it is just to clear your conscience, so it is for your benefit, why should he, the innocent party, be made to shoulder the burden? In this instance, maybe it is something you have to deal with, and carry it around with you as part of your own personal baggage. You cannot offload your guilt onto someone else just to make yourself feel better. People make mistakes in life and have to live with the consequences.
This is probably not the answer you were looking for, but you need to think deeply about this and make a decision based on what is best for your boyfriend, not you. Then live with whatever choice you make. After all it was only a kiss, wasn't it?
Hope that helps and good luck.
ok so
im suppose to be getting my period soon
and i have a party to go to on friday
and my friend has a hot tub
and im not one of those people who like tampons
i just never wear them
and when i try to put them in they hurt
either im doing ti wrong but i dont think thats it
or do i have like a problem?
or is it just that my "down there" isnt used to it at all
help?!
Try putting one foot on a toilet seat as this will give you a better angle to start from and relax, if you're tense it will be more difficult. You can get a variety of different sized tampons, so try a slim fit, and if you have a heavy flow, slim fit with extra absorbency.
You do need to practise to get the angle right, but once you have it you should have no further problems.
Hope that helps and enjoy the party.
well i got this dwarf hamster like a week ago and like the second day i got it my friend came over and was holding it and stuff and got me use to holding it and i was soo happy but then the next day i went to hold him and it nipped me! so now im scared to hold it. I washed my hands too before i held him too! any tips or anything would be greatly apprecitated!! thanks!
Hamster bites can be extremely painful. I had a hamster that managed to bite my finger through to the bone, (it had been frightened by a cat), it wouldn't stop gushing blood and I had to have antibiotics, so I can sympathise.
Try to avoid picking him up during the day, they are nocturnal animals and can get quite grumpy if disturbed before evening. Make sure your hands never smell of food or another animal. It sounds pretty gross, but if you rub your hands in the soiled area of the cage, his smell will mingle with yours and make him feel more secure. Try to give him as much attention as possible so he gets used to your presence and try to hold him firmly but gently. If he feels safe in your hands he will be less likely to react with his teeth.
I hope that helps and good luck.
yeah. free-range doesn't mean shit in the US. cheese is full of puss and chocolate is better when it's made with soymilk or in a pure dark form. better for you, too.
Well, we have a great range of animal free products in the UK and the labelling is good as well. Most veggie products also have a V on them, so it's easy to shop.
Just over 20% of Brits are veggie now and the numbers are growing. The trouble with BSE, cholesterol levels and the animals being pumped with antibiotics helped with this.
Also, people are becoming more informed and understand that if we do not eat the animals, less are killed and so less are bred. It's supply and demand like anything else.
Has anyone here had any involvement with SETI@home, ie the Search for Extra Terrestrial Inteligence's D.I.Y. package (for want of a better term).
And if not, what are people's opinions on someone who would take such an idea seriously?
Solid science, or kookiness?
Thanks.
I have had no involvement but I think it would be arrogant and short sighted to assume that we inhabit the only planet capable of supporting life. So I would say that, within reason, there is no problem with someone taking this seriously.
Hope that helps.
first off, this is the columnist moop. I read that you've been "veggie since 1987", have you been vegetarian or vegan?
I, personally, am a vegan since last august and a vegetarian since may. I know that our lives rock much more than others. power to you.
Lol. I've been vegetarian, can't quite make the vegan bit, too fond of chocolate, cheese (rennet free) and eggs (free range). All hail to those who can though. Conscience free!
And thank you :)
hi, well the other day i saw this video on how they kill animals for human consumtion, and i decided to turn vegetarian after seeing it. any tips for me on going about this? and are there any alternatives to meat?because i love my meat
There's nothing wrong with being a vegetarian. Done correctly it can be just as healthy if not more so than a meat based diet, (not so much cholesterol). You should ensure you have a well balanced diet with 5 servings of fruit and veg a day, pulses, seeds, nuts, dairy and small amounts of vegetable or olive oil. You can get protein from the nuts and seeds. Because vitamin B12 is only really found in meat, you would need to supplement your diet either with vitamins or B12 enriched yeast extract.
If you think you will miss eating meat, there is a huge variety of meat substitute food to choose from. With a lot of them, it is difficult to tell the difference.
I have included some websites for you to look at, there are recipes as well that you could try.

More and more people are turning vegetarian as they are finding out and objecting to the appalling way animals are treated and the conditions in which they are kept.
Fact: The vast number of cows that are being bred for milk and meat, (particularly for the fast food industries), are rather flatulent and are seriously damaging the ozone layer.
I think it's great that you want to take a stand on this, I've been a veggie since 1987 for the same reason.
I will warn you however, that a lot of meat eaters find it very difficult to accept that someone wants to be a vegetarian, and you are likely to have some unhelpful comments.
I hope that helps, if you need any more advice, let me know, I'll do what I can to help. Good luck.
my hamster just died and it was my best friend. when i was sad i would play with him and he would make me happy again. now that he isn't here i don't what to do. i don't think i could get another to replace him. what ways could i get my mind off of him? and everytime i do think of him, how can i get myself not to cry?
i greatly appreciate the help.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss, it's really awful to lose a loved pet.
You need time to grieve, so don't try to shut him out of your life, think of all the love you shared and how he used to cheer you up. Let yourself cry, it's healing.
Don't think of replacing him, think of it as giving another pet a chance of a wonderful home. It takes a special person to be able to give that much love, it would be shame to deprive another animal of a chance of sharing it with you. When you're ready, think about it?
I hope that helps and the best of luck to you.
So I need to find a good female duet soon. Nothing from RENT or Wicked though because everyone does a song from that. It's for a Soprano and an Alto. Just 2 girls, no guys. Any suggestions would be AMAZING!
How about 'I Know Him So Well' from the musical Chess? It's a powerful and emotive song for two female singers and could be adapted if necessary.
Hope that helps and good luck.
Quite frankly people, I am an advisor here, but I can not give myself advice...ha, so here is my question, I am a lonely man, and I feel it time to get another relationship going, but I'm not at all good looking...and I don't know how to approach a girl...any advice?
-JT
Try joining some clubs, do charity work, if you have left school, try an evening class. Charity work is a good one as you will meet like minded people.
It should not matter how you look, the right girl wouldn't care. If you find something where you have a common interest she would be able to find out more about the real you, which is always better than going on looks alone.
If you do this and meet someone, get to know them first, then things should progress from there.
Hope that helps and good luck.
One of my friends killed herself about 9 months ago, and I'm over it already and everything, but last night I had a terrible terrible dream where we were in a pool together and all of the sudden I ripped her hair out and started hitting her and trying to drown her. It has been haunting me all day, and making me feel guilty, and like she's mad at me for having the dream. It's making me feel so bad. Could this dream mean anything? Is she mad at me for having it? How can I not feel so bad about it. Should I feel bad?
I know you say you're over it but she was a friend and it's hard to get over things that tragic that quickly.
It does sound as though you may have subconscious anger at her for having left you. When you are awake you can rationalise things, but sleep brings out inner thoughts and feelings in the form of dreams. Did you have bereavement counselling? If not perhaps you should talk to someone about this.
I don't think for one moment she is mad at you but I guess your feelings about this dream depends on why she killed herself, and if you in any way have accepted some guilt for this, (people feel guilt where there is none).
I can't imagine that she would feel angry about you having this dream, and no I don't think you should feel bad about it either. After all, it shows you still think of her and no one likes to be forgotten do they? If she would feel anything, I would think it would be sadness that you are feeling this way. It's a very sad thing to have happened and I do feel you may still need some help with your feelings.
Hope that helps and good luck.
I heard that Steve Irwin the crocadile hunter guy was killed.
I don't know if that is true or not true?
Can someone tell me if it is true?
If the crocodile hunter is really dead then how did he get killed? I am so sad if it is true.
He was filming for a new underwater documentary series and he was stung on the chest by a sting rays barb. Whilst a sting from this fish is not normally lethal, it appears to have caused a cardiac arrest due to the location of the injury. He was dead before paramedics could reach him. His wife was away on a hiking holiday at the time so was told later.
It is very sad but when he knew that when he took as many risks as he did, something was bound to happen sooner or later.
about a year ago my close uncle died and everyone at the funeral was crying....everyone exept me that is,the same thing goes for when my grandad died. it hasnt really bothered me until now. is there somthing wrong with me? i knw death is supposed to be sad but whenever the subject comes up i dont really feel any emotion exept for just a very and i mean very minute drop of sadness.
People react in different ways to loss. You may not feel sad at the moment but there could come a time when something small happens and it would be the trigger to you grieving.
You may be one of the few people who are able to handle situations like this without getting too emotional. We are all different. Do you feel emotions about other things? If you do not, you could have a slightly detached personality which enables you to be very practical when others are falling apart. (Good to have around in a crisis).
Try not to worry about this, as I said we are all different and our reactions are going to vary.
Hope that helps and good luck.
