I'm going shopping in Oxford Street, London for my birthday. I've read up on it and most say that the main problem is that it's incredibly crowded. I'm going on a Saturday, which is obviously the worst time of the week to go there. I've never been before so I'm kind of worried that it'll ruin the experience, is it really that bad? Does anyone have any tips?

There are benches scattered around the area, so you can take breathers. Also, while some stores are packed, others are more reasonable. It would be very rare for it to be so crowded you had trouble moving through the crowd - this is more likely to happen as Christmas approaches.

If you avoid the rush hours it should be better. Try to look on it as fun and an experience. If it's cold make sure you wear something that you can take off if you go into one of the big department stores as they tend to be quite warm. If you go with someone, try to hold onto them in the busier areas, this should ensure you don't get parted.
Keep your bag under your arm and keep your hand on the clasp, don't put a bag on your back, there are pick pockets that will take advantage of anything not kept close to you.
Hope that helps and I haven't put you off more, London is a great experience, enjoy. Have a wonderful birthday. [ isis's advice column | Ask isis A Question ]
