SETI@home

Question Posted Monday September 11 2006, 3:51 pm

Has anyone here had any involvement with SETI@home, ie the Search for Extra Terrestrial Inteligence's D.I.Y. package (for want of a better term).
And if not, what are people's opinions on someone who would take such an idea seriously?
Solid science, or kookiness?
Thanks.

If someone can prove positive that there are other inhabited planets I think it would be great. I also think it is great that there are people who are willing to spend time investigating E.T.s. Good luck to them.

I haven't tried it myself, but I don't think there is anything weird about supporting the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Who's to say that they won't find anything? If you've got the computing power to spare (lucky you!), why not?

I think that the idea of donating computing power to science research is a good one. If SETI@home never discovers any extraterrestrial intelligence, at least it would have helped bring attention to this idea of sharing computing power.

I have had no involvement but I think it would be arrogant and short sighted to assume that we inhabit the only planet capable of supporting life. So I would say that, within reason, there is no problem with someone taking this seriously.
Hope that helps.
