i am a christian, but i relate much more to the catholic ways. Is it sacriligious to be from a different form of christianity before becoming catholic, and is there a procedure to take before u can be one? (link)
Most Catholic churches have a RCIA program that you'll have to go through. If you're already baptized in another Christian church, you won't have to be baptized again. RCIA ends with you receving the sacriments of 1st Communion and Confirmation at the same time. They usually schedule these for certain times of the year (usually around Easter, they might have them in the fall? again, check with the individual church).

As far as sacrilige... naw... in fact, many of the various christian sects are working hard at more cooperation and unity - we might live to see the day when some various Christians can all attend each other's services openly.

hi..i asked a question about using baking soda as toothpaste..and so i did but when i use it it hurts my gums really really bad!! i use it everyday but only in the afternoon and in the morning and night i use regular toothpaste but sometimes i put the baking soda on it..in the afternoon i just dip the bristles in the cup and then brush my teeth but my gums burn and hurt real bad and when im done they tingle burningly and throb&i dont know what to do, am i using the baking soda wrong?? i dont wanna stop using the baking soda because my teeth are really ugly yelow, and the toothpastes with the baking soda in them dont work to whiten my teeth, and i tried like whitstrips and gels n stuff, and i dont have any money to buy super toothpaste or something so someone tell me why this is happeneing or help me somehow! thank you! (link)
In all honesty, using pure baking soda might be too harsh for your gums. If you have irritation - STOP USING IT. The last thing you want is to damage your gums.

If you have some dilute peroxide solution, you could make a paste of baking soda and dilute peroxide to brush. If you do this: DO NOT SWALLOW ANY OF IT. And, do not use the peroxide more than maybe once or twice a week - if baking soda is already causing you discomfort, then baking soda AND peroxide will burn like hell.

Also, buy cheap toothpaste. If they contian phosphates, those act as whiteners... and if the toothpaste contains titanium dioxide, that is a UV attenuator that helps whiten teeth.

I have a project for which I've been asked to interpret the lyrics of my choice of song.

I've chosen 'Glycerine' by Bush and, although the song is brilliant, I can't get get one clear meaning from it. I'm really terrible at breaking stuff like this down and I need a little bit of help.

It would help if you know this song but, if you want to give it a try anyways, there lyrics can be found here: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Venue/2561/lyrics/glycerine.html

Could someone tell me THEIR interpretation of the song?

Thanks in advance. (link)
Perhaps the song was written so that the listener could interpret the lyrics different ways...

I write songs. I will sometimes intentionally write in vague terms so that the listener can add their own meaning to the song. Sure, I write them with a purpose, and I provide a framework, but I tend to not be very specific.

Skimming their lyrics, they flat-out have a Beatles reference in there... and it appears to be about a violent breakup... I see elements that refer to death and general bleakness. So, it appears that this song is very much the same deal - written with a certain amount of vaguenes but with a decent use of imagery to create a mood - and the mood is more important than the acual words.

i know that pneumatics means mechanical properties of air and other gases, and how it works and stuff like that. i guess i dont understand it enough to know examples of it though. what would some examples be? thanks (link)
shocks in cars, jack hammers, those cylinders that allow fork-lifts to pick stuff up, some jacks use to lift up cars are pneumatic, a Carver press is pneumatic ( http://www.carverpress.com/ ) Some braking systems on vehicles are pneumatic.

how do you find out if you are a level 1 advisenator? how do you become a higher level and how do you know? thanks (link)
we have an FAQ for a reason: http://www.advicenators.com/faq.php?t=13

My boyfriend an I have made plans for the future. I never ask for advice, I rather give it.. but I find myself at a loss of words when him and I tackle a few subjects. Our relationship is amazing, everything is going right, and is headed in a positive direction. However, for quite some time now.. I've believed strongly in a few select topics. And he refuses to be open-minded about these things. He relies on the excuse, "It's how I was brought up." I'm sorry if it's being unsympathetic, but I just don't see that as an excuse. He's an adult, he can make up his own mind. Everytime we talk about these things, it starts a debate, which neither of us can seem to win. If there would be one thing that would end our relationship, it would be this. He denies that he's closed-minded and it's a pointless argument everytime to him, but he refuses to change and I refuse to be okay with this. Any advice? (link)
Ahh... the joys of two strong-willed people in love... ;)

Next time he says, "It's how I was brought up", counter him with, "so, you're just going to blindly continue to live your life based on that?" or "so what?"... both drive home the message a bit.

However, you must also realize that changing him isn't always the best option - in fact, trying to force change on someone could be disasterous. You also used the magic word: debate. Don't debate things with him... discuss things... that way it isn't a competition and perhaps the both of you will be better able to talk about these things without feeling like someone will win while the other loses. Point out to him that for two people to have an on-going relationship, they have to be able to trust each other, and if he's unable to trust you to be able to talk to you about these issues in a level-headed manner... well, then he's really disrespecting the whole relationship.

That said, you should not be demanding change - don't force him to change, because that will only bring out resentment from him. And nothing will kill a relationship faster than two people starting to resent each other.

So what am I saying? The two of you must talk this out a bit more and come to some level of compromise - don't avoid the topics that cause this, but find a way to work through it. My wife and I still but-heads on a few topics, but the thing is, we've learned to try to understand each other's points of view over the years, so while we don't always have to agree, we can at least understand why we believe what we believe and we don't allow it to get in the way of anything else.

I have to ask this question, out of pure and utter curiousity. Is Targets running somewhat of a scam? The Ipod Minis are on sale, well, they give you a $15 gift card with the purchase of the mini thats 4G, but every store is "SOLD OUT", and I find this HARDDDD to believe, due to the fact the sale just started, and every store is like "WE got a HUUUGE shipment yesterday, but they sold out". (link)
Any hot item that appears in an advertisement as being massively on-sale or having some special (such as gift cards) will sell out very, very quickly. This is not at all surprising that they are out of iPods when you get to the store. I've seen various items sell out in a matter of minutes at some stores.

I just became a moderator and I am having trouble finding out how I can become a level 2 moderator. Thanks in advance! (link)
People do not automatically become L2 moderators. They are assigned. I'm sure if you were to give money to either myself or any of the other L3 mods, we'd be more likely to consider you for L2 status.

The biggest thing, of course, is to read the Moderator FAQ - we wrote the thing for a reason - please, PLEASE read it. In fact, read it, or I may be forced to kill you. Twice.

I am an artist and was asked to pain a picture of Corona beer. Is it legal for me to paint brand names without infringing on copyright/trademark, etc? (link)
Yes, it is legal - so long as it doesn't appear that you are trying to steal or dilute the brand-name. If you were to mass-produce your picture, the company that makes Corona would likely come after you. Making one picture, the company will neither know nor will they care. A trademark is only valid if the owner enforces the trademark. In your case, you're not stealing anything, you're merely painting a picture of their beer - that should be covered under fair-use.

I was referred to you by Southern Chickety, with this question:I just finished crying, letting it all out. All because of my parents. I'm making 14 very soon now, but when I was 12, I broke my virginity with this guy, and my parents told him not to call at all and not to come over. I admit, he was a bad influence, and he didn't care about me. But I learned so much from that. After that happened, I have been through numerous realationships, lasting anywhere from a week to 10 months. I matured very, very fast too. I have learned about all kinds of guys during that time, and I don't trust ANYONE now.I am currently in a serious relationship with a guy in his late 20s. He treats me so good. Never says a bad word to me. He says he's still shocked at how I am so mature for my age and says he's never met anyone as "real" as me before. The thing is, we can't go anywhere together. And I'm tired of letting good guys who're interested have to pass me up because my parents don't know me and think I don't know anything. I'm not saying I know it all, but I have been a street girl, and I know what it's like. i don't want that. I'm ready to settle down with one person. No cheating. And my age is what everyone looks at. Tonight I couldn't even go to a fair because "I'm too young to be out at night with 3 other girls." My parents don't know me. They don't know ANY of the things I have been through. I want to know how I can tell my parents that I feel too sheltered? It's not just that. My parents don't seem to understand that if they get me a cell phone, then they can stay in touch with me no matter where I am. They always try to keep me home. They won't even let me go to a high school dance, and I'm going there now. How can i tell them that age is anything but a number, and it's my maturity that counts? I'm sorry you had to read all that, but my life is getting very miserable, and I don't know what to do. I'm thinking a counselor...but I don't know. Please help and thank you.

oh, and sorry if you misunderstand the part where I say i can't go anywhere with the guy in his 20s. I know why I can't go anywhere with him, it's illegal, but I can't go ANYWHERE with any boy, no matter what age. Many, many, endless scores of boys have asked me out to skating rinks and bowling alleys and three asked me out to the fair tonight. But I can't go because I'm "13".
Thanks again.
(link)
The thing is... you ARE only 13. Like it or not, that IS how old you are. And while you truly believe that you are more mature, well... I'm not convinced. There's more to maturity than "experience" as you list it...

What you seem to not have is any level of trust established between you and your parents. And honestly, you're not going to get anywhere until you have some ability for them to trust you. And from what you've said, gaining that trust is likely going to be really, really hard, because were they to know the various things you make mention of here, there's no way in hell they'll trust you. Seriously... either that, or they know more than you think they know, and that's why they seem to shelter you. Don't be surprised if you have few secrets from your parents...

Either way, I think seeing a counselor would probably be an excellent idea, as I highly doubt my opinions will really be able to sway you, or make you understand. Also, I'm certainly not intimate with your situation, nor do I really know you, so all I have to go by is what you've typed here, and I could be reading your tone wrong - I could be getting entirely the wrong impression. I mean, it really does sound like you need to seek some professional help to try to get some of your life straightened out.

almost everytime i answer a question on here on advicenators home page it cuts my answer off short so you cant see everything that i said which is completely annoying...is there any reason why its doing this? how do i stop it? (link)
I can't say that I've seen this occur. I've had some reallllly long answers to things. Can you give me specific links to answers that you know for sure were truncated? This could also be a symptom of some other issues we've been having on the server, so perhaps it is tied to that if this is only a recent thing. I'll try to make sure the admin is aware of this, too.

Hi all i had a misscarriage april last year and ever since we have been trying for a baby but no luck it is a year later now.. i am due my period but am 5 days late i had few cramps that been coming and going and have very sore boobs more then normaland they keeping me awake at night but i dont know wat to do i took a test 2 days after i missed but was negative then took another one on 5th day still negative please help me i would like sum advice thankyou..

If hormone levels aren't high enough, a pregnancy test will not show a positive result. Pregnancy tests can give false negatives, but they do NOT give false positive results.

Other hormonal balance issues can cause sore breasts. If they bother you, apply warm compresses to them (this is what is recommended to women who are weaning babies after breastfeeding).

i want to know if im the only person that this happans to but whenever i click on columnists to see like who most recently answered questions or whatever it says error... why is this? cuz i want to ask people a problem i am having but i cant do that with not knowing who oftenly comes on and answers questions! thanks (link)
We are aware of the error and are working on fixing it.

For anyone that has been to prom, or is attending prom, or even knows about prom, what do you do? from beginning of all it until the end? I heard something about the grand march.. whats that? and what do you do? (link)
Different schools have different traditions... at our prom, we mostly stood around, ate food, and pretended to dance. My at-the-time girlfriend and I spent about a thrid of the night talking to the DJ.

Some schools have a prom king and queen... others don't. Some schools have an official after-prom, some don't.

It all depends on what your school's traditions are.

does anyone out there (link)
a cursory google search gives me the following:

"Taborama Forum - The Musician's Community
... I can't find Dresden Dolls' tabs ANYWHERE... and since I can only request one
per post, does anyone think they could manage to tab Coin-Operated Boy? ..."

http://www.taborama.com/archive/artist.php?id=3631&a=Dresden%20Dolls

That link only has lyrics.

What this means is this: no one has tabbed their songs yet.

Bands don't release tablature. Someone who loves the song and can play it does it on their own.

Go to www.olga.net for more tab info - it is the grand-daddy of tablature websites.

The fact that 99% of all tabs are done by fans is also why 99% of all tabs are usually wrong - some more wrong than others, but they usually miss something in every song.

If you really want Dresden Dolls tab, you might be stuck figuring it out yourself. For someone to write tablature out, there has to be a demand for it. You have demand, but if there's not enough demand from others, it'll never happen - the volunteer / educational subculture of tab writers deemed it that way long ago.

i have had the urge to write songs lately but all of them are about love and my lovelife and i seem to copy from alot of other songs? to help come up with my own ideas and NOT about my love life what could i do??? any advice is helpful here i dont care! (link)
Try choosing some random phrase - I wrote an entire song off the phrase "I look around". It is used in so many songs, I found it funny... so I wrote a song about writing songs. I wrote a song called "Dig" - I wrote in vague terms, talking about digging and dirt - but it is all symbolic for getting deeper into life's issues.

I've found it helpful to every now and then write something totally stupid on purpose - I've written joke "poems" like "Ode to a Piece of Wood", "Ode to a Big Red Bouncy Ball", and "Ode to a Glass of Water". They are all totally absurd and sometimes stupid - but the point was to just be silly and clear my mind. Usually after writing something goofy like that, I manage to squeeze out something with a bit more meaning using a little less effort because the words are just flowing better.

I tend to talk a lot about using symbolism, icons, themes, and litterary elements such as alitteration when writing songs. You want to choose your words to set a mood, set a tone for the song. And the music should either match or contrast the verbal tone. I mean, if you write a really depressing set of lyrics - and you set it to really up-beat music, the result is either subtle humor or it sucks... it all depends on the nature of the topic and how you've chosen to handle it.

At its simplest, songs are just notes and words. Get a melody, a tune, and either write it out in music notation, or record it somehow - don't worry about words, don't worry about having a complete song - you just want a melody - take it and listen to it, and see where it leads you. Build on it, if words come to you, write them down.

Don't be afraid to steal from yourself - if you thought certain lines from one song were good, but the whole thing sucked overall, take the good stuff and make something new out of it.

But most of all, just keep at it. Songwriting is a learned skill, and it takes lots of practice. I've been at it for a while now, and I look at early things I wrote and laugh, often because of how horrible they are... but some of them are still good, even by my current standards.

But write about anything. Write about how the sun makes you feel. Write about a TV show that you hate. Write about some memory from a few years ago. Write about some dream you had. But write - write, write, and after that, write some more.

If you'd like, feel free to email me at sporkopolis2001@yahoo.com some of your ideas and I'll be glad to critique them, and give suggestions/feedback on where to go from there.

Alright.. my boyfriend was talking to my best guy friend today.. and my boyfriend I guess called me a dirty whore... someone else told me to call them b-cuz they heard my boyfriend say some mean shit about me!! I'm getting really tired of him talking shit.. but the thing is he doesnt always treat me this way.. when he is nice to me he is a total sweetheart... I am so stressed I love this boy and I really need some help.. (link)
If he's stabbing you in the back, then it doesn't matter how he treats you to your face. Of course he's going to be nice directly to you... but from what you've said here, he is treating you like shit behind your back. Is that really worth it? You should not have to put up with shit like that. Also, your "boyfriend" doesn't sound like much of a friend, and needs to grow up.

I am really stuck with english and i was wondering if there was anyone that would be willing to maybe help me out a bit please. thanks (link)
What exactly is it that you need?

What are the benefits and bad things about eating sunflower seeds? (link)
benefits - no saturated fat, sunflower seed oil is good for you, high in protein.

bad stuff - often, they are heavily salted. Can get wedged between your teeth and it hurts. If you are allergic to various seeds, could potentially kill you, I guess... (one would hope you'd be aware of this in advance).

This may not sound serious but it is. I was having a nervous break down during math because of this.

I can not stand the phrase "I never knew that." It just drives me insane. Whenever I hear it I either cry or scream. I just hate the phrase. So my question is how can I get over this? I am asking this in all seriousness. My friend who has a column here (she's asking this since I can't get on) has even told me do get help for this. (link)
You know what? I never knew that.

No, really... I never did.

I mean, if I had known it, then I would not be able to say that, becuase it implies that this was knowledge that I have never had access to.

However, if I had known it and forgotten it, then I'd have to say, "I think I knew that, but forgot it."

Ain't language an amazing thing?

Also, if you are truly having a real, honest-to-god nervous breakdown over that phrase, then you really, REALLY need to seek professional help and not advice from a website.
