i have had the urge to write songs lately but all of them are about love and my lovelife and i seem to copy from alot of other songs? to help come up with my own ideas and NOT about my love life what could i do??? any advice is helpful here i dont care!
Be nosy! See what people are talking about, what people are doing, look around you and then write about what you see and what you think of it.
Always cary a bit of paper and a pen with you, you never know when lyrics are going to pop in to your head and it's going to be a nightmare not to be able to remember them when you get home so write them down in the moment so you don't forget them. You'll probably end up having a load of different verses that don't match but when you get home you can finish them all or put them together!
Try to write about something more original than love. Everyone seems to be writing about love. Write about random stuff, like I said before - things you see in the streets. Your opinion on stuff, things that have happend to you in the past or things that are going on in your mind you could even write about how you can't come up with any good ideas for a song! I'm not saying you should never write about love but open up and write about other stuff!
If you do your own beats too then get the beat before you do the lyrics and just liste to the beat over and over again untill some stuff pops in your head. If you don't do your own beats - forget I said that.

It sounds like writing is an outlet for you, so don't care about what it is similar to. Maybe change some words, use different meanings and just write. Eventually it will all come together. Aunty_Zozie answered Wednesday April 13 2005, 10:34 am: ok well (and it does sound cheesy) but one of the best inspirations i've found (because i like to write random stuff) is to actually go out and experience the world. to write well, you have to write about what you know, because that way yu can give a correct insight. Climb mountains. See the views, it really is an amazing thing. I went to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia recently, the view was breathtaking, i went home and wrote about 50 poems. You need to go out and see the world, theres so much inspiration in modern day life for songs that aren't just lovey dovey. But writing about your own life is good, because your writing about stuff that you've experienced first hand. Good luck and contact me again if you need any help! MFS answered Tuesday April 12 2005, 7:59 pm: Try choosing some random phrase - I wrote an entire song off the phrase "I look around". It is used in so many songs, I found it funny... so I wrote a song about writing songs. I wrote a song called "Dig" - I wrote in vague terms, talking about digging and dirt - but it is all symbolic for getting deeper into life's issues.
I've found it helpful to every now and then write something totally stupid on purpose - I've written joke "poems" like "Ode to a Piece of Wood", "Ode to a Big Red Bouncy Ball", and "Ode to a Glass of Water". They are all totally absurd and sometimes stupid - but the point was to just be silly and clear my mind. Usually after writing something goofy like that, I manage to squeeze out something with a bit more meaning using a little less effort because the words are just flowing better.
I tend to talk a lot about using symbolism, icons, themes, and litterary elements such as alitteration when writing songs. You want to choose your words to set a mood, set a tone for the song. And the music should either match or contrast the verbal tone. I mean, if you write a really depressing set of lyrics - and you set it to really up-beat music, the result is either subtle humor or it sucks... it all depends on the nature of the topic and how you've chosen to handle it.
At its simplest, songs are just notes and words. Get a melody, a tune, and either write it out in music notation, or record it somehow - don't worry about words, don't worry about having a complete song - you just want a melody - take it and listen to it, and see where it leads you. Build on it, if words come to you, write them down.
Don't be afraid to steal from yourself - if you thought certain lines from one song were good, but the whole thing sucked overall, take the good stuff and make something new out of it.
But most of all, just keep at it. Songwriting is a learned skill, and it takes lots of practice. I've been at it for a while now, and I look at early things I wrote and laugh, often because of how horrible they are... but some of them are still good, even by my current standards.
But write about anything. Write about how the sun makes you feel. Write about a TV show that you hate. Write about some memory from a few years ago. Write about some dream you had. But write - write, write, and after that, write some more.

Mercy_x_Me answered Tuesday April 12 2005, 6:12 pm: Well, since love is not too original when it comes to songs, think of an interesting word and branch of its meaning and several examples of it. Some cool words: Perserverance, Serendipity, Astutely, frazzled.
HmMMm... if you chose to take that road just open a dictionary and find some words you like. Love isn't the only thing that occurs today.
