My friend said the first time she smoked a cigarette, she got "high" and she felt jittery and light-headed. Is that true? I mean, can that happen with a cigarette? I'll rate high for good answers. Thanks <33
LoveNJstyle answered Wednesday June 28 2006, 8:13 pm: welll jittery & lightheaded don't really describe a high... that's more like an allergic reaction almost. yes i guess it can happen, but that's not a high/good feeling. i think she's exaggerating a little bit to make it sound fun/interesting. <3 [ LoveNJstyle's advice column | Ask LoveNJstyle A Question ]

Alin75 answered Wednesday June 28 2006, 5:45 pm: I read through all the answers. The best answer is from girlygirl. What you are describing does not happen to all people. It did however happen to me when I started smoking so I know exactly what she means. Its one of the reasons I kept smoking (lol, I dont need to preach to you what a stupid move that was do I?)
The reason that answer was the best is because she is absolutely right that this is something that will pass. Once your body is used to smoking, that dizzy high goes away completely. [ Alin75's advice column | Ask Alin75 A Question ]
orphans answered Wednesday June 28 2006, 5:06 pm: They already told you why, but here's my advice. You don't need to know. DON'T SMOKE. If there were no more people in the world, you wouldn't even THINK about smoking? Because you're just doing it to impress other people. It causes lung cancer and SO much more. I would rather see someone with pretty white teeth (smoking causes yellow teeth) rather than know that you smoked. Doesn't impress anyone but bad people. I've got a grandpa that smoked when he was younger, and so much is going wrong. Please listen to me, even if you weren't thinking about smoking. I'm not trying to be rude! Just facts. Bye! <3 [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]
bAhAmAmA0250 answered Wednesday June 28 2006, 4:54 pm: It can happan to a person that hasn't done it before the first few times. It's not a constant thing though. If she got hooked she won't continue acting like that. If she does it again she might feel like that again but most likely not the third time. girlygirl answered Wednesday June 28 2006, 4:49 pm: it makes you a little lightheaded/dizzy for a few minutes but that's it. It doesn't happen forever if you keep smoking, just the first few times. [ girlygirl's advice column | Ask girlygirl A Question ]
cailoisa answered Wednesday June 28 2006, 4:44 pm: A "nicotine high" is the whole reason people smoke, but I wouldn't even really call it a high. Think of it more like a caffine high or adrenaline high.
DeadPoetics answered Wednesday June 28 2006, 4:44 pm: It isn't a high as you think of with other drugs, like marijuana. It's more of a light tingly feeling on your skin, a lightheadedness, and a sudden burst of energy. This is commonly known as a "buzz".
All of this can be explained by the fact that not only was it her first time smoking, but because the main ingredient in cigarettes, nicotine, is what they call a "stimulant". It speeds the heart and breathing. This usually happens any time you smoke a cigarette, but it's less noticeable if you begin to smoke regularly. karenR answered Wednesday June 28 2006, 4:40 pm: I don't know that I would call it a high. The next feeling you get is nausea and usually vomiting. Good thing she didn't smoke a second one. :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
