what they do is be stupid and act like they are 20 when they are really only 12 or 13 and too young to be on the site and give away their private info to people they dont know because they think they are being cool. [ DancinCutie08's advice column | Ask DancinCutie08 A Question ]
Erinn_the_bamf answered Saturday March 11 2006, 7:47 am: Yes, it's true. My friend was actaully stalked because by someone she meet on myspce. He came to her house in the middle of the night and hid in their garage. Luckily, he didn't rape her or anything.
Anyway, this is what happens. Someone requests someone else and the person adds them. They get to talking. They decide to meet up someplace. The person who was requested gets raped/kidnapped/killed.
Or in my friend's case, she accidentaly gave out too much info. She tried to be as safe as she could but a stalker put the pieces of the puzzle together. So be safe and keep all your personal info a secret. [ Erinn_the_bamf's advice column | Ask Erinn_the_bamf A Question ]
lorawhat answered Saturday March 11 2006, 4:13 am: yeah its true, it happens more often than you would think. when two people become friends on myspace and one happens to be a raper, they plan to meet up and the raper kidnaps and rapes the "friend" they were meeting up with.
its really sad, so be careful. don`t ever meet up with someone you met on the internet and try your hardest to only talk to people you know. [ lorawhat's advice column | Ask lorawhat A Question ]
People (teenagers being the minority) tend to be overly naive or too quick to trust, even if it doesn't seem like it.
Alot of the time this is started with the giving out of too much info. This leads to the 2 people (one being the kidnapper, the other being the victom) meeting online, gaining "trust" and eventually setting up a meeting, in which then the victim is untimely kidnapped/raped/killed/ etc all for this other persons amusement, pleasure, and or fantasy.
The only plus side to this whole thing is it can be traced quite easily back to the culprit. More often than note he/she lives nearby, is older, and is more conspicious to notice. This leading the police to him faster, but by then the damage is done.
The sad thing is this problem can be SO easily avoided in almost every case. Things like not giving out to much info, street address, full name, location, phone number, etc can help you minimize the risks of actually having an internet stalker.
It's quite sad. But I hope this helped you understand it a bit better.
tasuki answered Friday March 10 2006, 10:50 pm: Yes, it's true. What happens is some people will pretend to be, say, a thirteen-year-old girl. And they'll seek out girls who are gullible. Those girls end up giving out their full name, address, etc. and the rapist meets her in real life and well, rapes her.
It's surprisingly easy to protect yourself from online rapists. If you want to be safe, make everything friends only, don't show your school, phone number, e-mail or hometown, or even your full name. Don't give out your password and avoid screen names like sexygurl13 or elizabethsmith_ A good screen name would be something like teh__lizard. [ tasuki's advice column | Ask tasuki A Question ]
duudee_advicer answered Friday March 10 2006, 10:25 pm: People give out too much info.
To stay safe:
Put up a Friends Only thing.
Fake your location ( or don't put one at all )
Dont state your age
And don't add people you don't know.

christina answered Friday March 10 2006, 9:57 pm: Yeah, it's unfortunately true. Some kids are so naive that they actually believe the person they're talking to is nice, but then they meet them and POW! PSYCHOTIC BABY SHOOTER ON YOU! Kidding, but no, the people are psychotic. Not all, but some. That's why I don't take adds from anyone over 18. Unless it's like, a band er something. Or a friend who made their age older as a joke. But yeah, they banned the page from school systems too.
crystalxclear answered Friday March 10 2006, 9:36 pm: You can't really blame MySpace for these happenings seeing as it's your choice to like show off your details (where you live...etc) and pictures that could be innaprociate. [ crystalxclear's advice column | Ask crystalxclear A Question ]
