church

Question Posted Saturday February 4 2006, 12:24 am

In your opinion (meaning that if you tell me what you think you'll get a 5), do you think that people should miss out on church in order to do yardwork, study for an exam, play in a soccer tournament, etc? I just want to know what qualifies as an acceptable excuse for not going to church. What other good reasons are there for missing church? -no I'm not trying to avoid going to church-

Thanks!

I think that missing a few church days in your life will be ok. You will not be lesser of a person or a better one. Im sure it will be ok and forgiven if not.

LindasCounsel answered Sunday February 26 2006, 1:25 pm:
Dear church,
I absolutely love this question! I love it because I had previously lived my life with a lot of guilt over going to church, not going to church. And where I live now, (Hiddenite, NC) going to church seems to be "just what you do." However, I have found my greatest spiritual answers to be when I'm quietly contemplating...on nothing...just listening to my thoughts. I feel I'm a very spiritual person and every day I talk to God, the universe, am grateful for all the wonderful people and relationships and things in my life. I think that when the guilt is removed from going to church/not going to church, if you feel moved to go, then go. If not, then don't. But take the guilt out of it because it won't really change anything. Doing something out of obligation (and sometimes we have to) doesn't amount to a whole lot of sincerity. However, if you are looking for people to share with and get opinions other than your own that you can really learn from, go and spend some time at your church. My best answer would be, (and note this is only my opinion) is keep your mind clear and non-judgmental. Keep your mind fixed on positive things. And I feel the highest form of prayer is actually a prayer of gratitude rather than supplication. Thank God, the universe, the planet, for all the things in your life and that everything is just the way it is meant to be. Many lessons are learned in church, and as many are learned out of church. Keep the faith! Linda

Showtime answered Friday February 10 2006, 4:13 pm:
Ok listen. You dont go to church because you have to. In the old testament there were a bunch of laws that had to be fulfilled and that just sucked. If you think of going to church as a requirment then you do no justice to God for having come in the flesh to make a new law a perfect law. Love one another as I have loved you. Selfless love. We go to church because we want to thank God together as a community of believers. To many people think life is just what ever they want and they dont think of the impact of community. I am a catholic and I used to go to church because I felt obligated but then I realized. Why would anybody give up there entire life to dedicate themselves to God. If i dont even like going on one day a week for an hour. So I asked. It turns out man has no peace but in doing the will of God. Think about it is Gods will we love each other and be nice and forgiving and make sacrifices for each other and live pure and good lives. Say you dont you feel guilty knowing your doing something you shouldnt have or knowing you should have done something but didnt. Our heart is restless until it rests in God. To many people just ask God for stuff and they are like what God didnt give me this he must not exist etc. Why would God do anything for you if you only talk to him when you want something. He is around us always but we only remember him when we want something that is not a way to treat a parent. So you go to church every sunday to thank him and praise him for your life hear on earth and I go everyday know because Jesus is truelly present in the Eucharist Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. Being around Jesus everyday has got to have a positive impact on your life. The only reason to miss church is if You are sick or Forced to work because of extremely impovershed income.

I'm no Christian, but in my humble opinion you don't need to attend a place of worship to show your faith. Quiet praying and comtemplation by yourself should (in the eyes of God) serve the same purpose, as just because you don't attend a communal place of worship it doesn't mean that your faith is any less strong. It's hard to live your life to the full these days and still find time to go to church, so if you ask me anything that is important to you inn life is an acceptable excuse; for instance God wouldn't want you to mess up an exam cos you had to attend Church instead of revising, now would he?!

WEll, since I am a strong christian girl, i find that unless your sick, or are not at home, you should go. You can study afterwards, or do your work. As for sports, it is more important to learn in church than to win a game. hope it helps

This isn't really about physically going to church or not. This is a heart issue. Church is what....an hour maybe a little more for some? If a person's heart is desiring the things of God, going to church is something a person WANTS to do and everything else is not important enough to miss church for.

I think any reason a person gives is okay.. I mean i think if they have something better to do then go for it..! i`m not sayin quit church period cuz i don`t think thats what anybody should do but i do think that God knows whether they`re a good person whether they go to church or not.. Not going to church isn`t a sin so they aren`t doing anything wrong.. Their are tons of very religious people that don`t go to church.. [Hope i helped a bit] ♥Dez

It really depends on how religious your family is. Personally, I think there is something that is important to you going on at the same time as church, you should go ahead and make that your priority. Church happens every single week, so you can always make it up one way or another. :)

kailey answered Saturday February 4 2006, 12:05 pm:
I think any reason is acceptable. Is your god going to condemn you & kick you out of your religion for not attending church? You don't have to attend church services to be a good (whatever religion).

My opinion is probably biased because I'm an Atheist. I don't bash people for having their beliefs--to each his own-- but in general I'm baffled by the concept of organized religion. Whether or not you're a good (whatever) shouldn't be decided by how often you're present in church; it's your character as a whole that counts-- whether you're a good person overall, following your religion, etc. It's great if you want to congregate with others of the same religious background to celebrate your god, but it shouldn't be a requirement. Your god should love you regardless, and even admire you more for doing something like schoolwork & working to make something of yourself instead of dropping everything to worship him.

You can pray anywhere. You don't need to drop everything to run to church & pray. People say they can feel their god's presence-- why must they go to a specific place to speak to him or show him their adoration?

SweetxxIntoxication answered Saturday February 4 2006, 10:37 am:
You could never go to church and still be a good..(insert religion here). It is understandable that you have other things to do on a (insert day you go to church here). Just don't lie about why you didn't go, just tell them the truth, even if it's "I just didn't feel up to it today". Lying would be the worst in a case like this in my opinion.

Sporkster answered Saturday February 4 2006, 9:35 am:
You could never go to church your whole entire life and still be a "good Christian."

Church really is only a place of fellowship and learning about the Bible collectively with fellow Christians.

You do not HAVE to go to church to get to heaven and what-not. God won't look at your church attendence record to see whether you're going to heaven or hell--he looks at whether you're a believer and follower of His son or not.

Buttt...

Like FunnyCide said, convincing your parents of this might be another story. I think the reasons she listed were great, though, so take heed to those.

FunnyCide answered Saturday February 4 2006, 9:26 am:
A good excuse for missing church in whose eyes? God's not going to say -- "YOU MISSED CHURCH! Now I must shoot you with a lightning bolt." But with parents...

- Playing in a soccer tounrament. Usually practice isn't a good enough excuse.
- yardwork - not good enough. The yard will be there when you get home.
- Study for an exam - not good enough [at least for my parents]. If I had something to study for, I should've already done it.
- Sick. Obviously, if you are sick, you don't need to go to church.
- Hurt physically. IE - broken arm, leg, sprained ankle, pulled tendons etc. If you're in a lot of physical pain, you're not going to be able to pay attention to church.

I know a girl who always says that she "was out late" or "went to bed late" or her "alarm didn't go off" or she's "really tired," so she doesn't go to church. I don't think those are proper excuses. There've been times when I wouldn't get home until 12:30 AM and not go to bed until after 1:00 AM and still be at church bright and early at 8:45 for Sunday School. It doesn't really matter if you're tired, or went to bed late, or stayed out late, because that's more than likely your own fault. Sometimes you're drug around with your parents, but if they're going to go to church, you should too.

God isn't going to punish you for missing church. Especially if you have to study or have an important sports game or something. I'm supposed to be a Christian, but I haven't been to church properly for months because I've been too tired with school. Now that's probably a terrible excuse but everyone seems to think it's okay so I doubt that studying for an exam will leave you bombing straight down into Hell.

unreachable answered Saturday February 4 2006, 2:30 am:
In my own opinion I think that there are a few reasonable excuses for missing church, but otherwise you should not. For example, sometimes my family or family friends have late-lasting parties on Saturday nights, and we can't get up early enough for church on Sundays. Or if we're really sick or on vacation, we have to miss it. Otherwise, we do our best to get to church every Sunday morning.

I'm not good enough to follow this rule, but God says Sunday is a day of rest. So, you aren't supposed to even work (homework, yardwork, anything).

Imperialistic answered Saturday February 4 2006, 1:14 am:
I think it varies depending on your religion and the type of people who go. Technically (in the eyes of God), Sunday is the day of rest so there is NO EXCUSE for opting to do work instead of go to Church but I know my friend, who is an Anglican, misses it sometimes and doesn't think it's a big deal, while my boyfriend, who is a Catholic, would rather get run over by a bus than miss Church.
If you're doing it for appearances, the people who go to your Church will be the deciding force on the matter. Do they go to Church all the time, are they strict, et cetera?
