ears are ear-ritating :-/

Question Posted Sunday August 14 2005, 4:15 pm

I just got my earlobes pierced for the 3rd time. The last two times failed because after a week or so of my newly pierced ears, they would always swell up and get infected. It would hurt and itch! Now, I got them re-done at Claire's and now my ears have formed a rash around the earring. I'm cleaning them everyday but they're still itchy! It's red and gross..I don't know what to do! It's my 3rd time..please help and is this normal?

[ Answer this question ]

Additional info, added Sunday August 14 2005, 4:35 pm:
please tell me what to do..they itch so much..should i go to the doctors..or go back to claires..should i take them out and then go to claires?.

Best answer:

I got mine done at claires and the earring was on too tight (thanks mom) and this infected wet gross green scab grew over it.

I went to my derm and she looked at it. She perscribed pills that were huge.. but after the bottle was done the infection was gone.

NEVER GET YOUR EARS PIERCED AT CLAIRES!!
They're not as sterile as you think. Get them done at piercing pagoda or a salon. I don't know anybody who's got infections from there.

Good luck!

i would go to the docter and get some medicine. if it still doesnt clear p then i would take them out and get them redone but NOT at claires. go to a professional.ive had the same problem with some of my piercings and its because some places use a certain metal and alot of people are allergic to it.

ear piercing can be a complicating thing for some people. but i think your best bet is to take your earings out b.c it could form an infection in your ear. also if you want to get your ears pierced again i think its best not to go back to claires b.c they use cheep metal, which is most likely the reason your ears are red and itchy b.c you might be allergic. you should go to a perfessional place i know from experiance, i have my ears pierced twice and the first time i had the same problem as you b.c i also did the mistake of going to claires. so if you plan on getting them redone when they heal try somewhere else. hope i helped ~ Jen

Dont take the earring out and go see a doctor, it could be infected. If you take the earring out your subjecting the open hole to bigger infections.

It sounds to me that you have sensitive ears. Try using hypoallergenic earrings. They tend to have less irritating metals in them. You will pay a little more for them, but, in my eyes, it's worth the extra dollar or so to not have my ears irritated. I myself cannot wear earrings unless they are hypoallergenic. You should probably take out the earrings to cut down on the irritation. If you have some hypoallergenic earrings to replace them with, you can put those in. I'll include links to a few for future reference.
I would suggest using Neosporin or some other antibiotic cream on your ears. It should cut down on the irritation as well as help your holes heal. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly before and after touching your ears to keep from transferring any bacteria. Turn your earrings twice a day to keep the hole open and clear.

It depends on a lot of things. You migt be allergic to the metal, in which case you should definately take them out. I have to wear silver, gold, or surgical steel, or my ears hurt really bad.

However, the redness, itching, and swelling could just be a part of the healing process for you. I found a lot of relief when I had mine done by doing this.

Twice a day, soak two cotton balls in i cup very warm water and 1/4 tsp sea salt. Gently press the cotton balls on the front and back of your ears, and hold them there for several minutes. Do this twice a day. Also, never touch your ears without first thoroughly washing your hands.

You may be allergic to the type of metal in the earring, if you are you should be wearing gold earrings, and you should be cleaning them either more effectively or more often. Hope I helped.

Well, that might be because of the place you pierced them at. Try one of those stands in the mall, like piercing pagoda, i got mine done there and they feel fine. if that doesn't work, then i guess you just can't have them.hope i helped.

Thanks,
Jenna

I was the same way, when I had gotten my ears pierced in the same place. They did the exact same thing. Take both earrings out, (if you havent already dont so) and instead of only giving them a break for a couple weeks or whatever, give them about a month or two. If you get them done so fast, they'll just keep doing the same thing. I think this may be normal. But better yet, you have been cleaning them after getting them pierced, right? I think you should just give them a break for a month or 2. If you wait that amount of of time, and they do the same thing, I think at that point, your ears are too sensitive to get them pierced in that spot.

XoxBroKeNxoX answered Sunday August 14 2005, 4:23 pm:
no its not normal. you should go back to claires. theres alotta reasons why your ears are getting like this, youre probably allergic to the earring... Peircing guns are one of the worst ways u can perice your ears, so i would suggest next ttime u want them periced go to a tattoo/peircing place, it will probably be more expensive but its more safer/sanitized/sterilized. the gun they use to perice your ear is NOT sterilized. id explain more to you but it would take all day. sometimes if you have an infection it would be a bad idea to take the earrings out, it traps the infection in your ear. go back to claires immediatly because this can turn into a way worse situation, again i could talk and talk but it would take all day. if you have any more percing questions ask me. i know everything about them.

when you had them done again did they pierce the hole that you had already had done? if so all you are doing is starting the infection all over again. you need 2 have it pierced at least a couple of millermetres away from the last hole. either that or if your ears have been piercd using silver... you could be allergic like me! hope i helped, if u have anymore questions just pop one in ma inbox and i will gladly help ~*~Lucee~*~

BrokenWings answered Sunday August 14 2005, 4:19 pm:
You are probably having a metal reaction, the most likely thing is you are allergic to Nickle, a lot of people are, so try nickle free earings and that should die down. If that doesnt help try other metals like titanim but if you are still reacting its likely that you wont be able to have your ears pierced because you react to the metal. I can only wear titanium in my piercings.
Take care.
