Anorexia

Question Posted Tuesday June 7 2005, 8:37 pm

How exactly is being anorexic bad for you? People has said that if you're anorexic your body loses all these nutrients but what are the actual like 'symptoms' you get if you're anorexic. Besides dizzyness and fatigue.
Thanks I'll rate 5 for any decent answers!

-Exhaustion and Fatigue
-Hiding food in napkins, under beds, in drawers, etc.
-Abuse of laxatives, diet pills, or diuretics

-Never eats around others

Some Telling Signs that Anorexia May Be in Progress
-The individual is constantly complaining about being "fat," "obese" or "huge."
-The individual is very preoccupied with weight, counting calories and fat grams, and dieting.
-The individual is drained and has little energy.
-The individual has begun wearing extremely loose fitting clothing.
-The individual comes up with new found excuses not to eat such as, "I already ate and I have an upset stomach."
-The individual is extremely defensive about his/her weight.
-The individual is often cold.
-The individual often cooks or bakes food for other people, but refuses to eat the food themselves.

-The individual avoids restaurants and eating in front of others.
-The individual's complexion has become pale and his/her skin is extremely dry.
-When the individual looks in the mirror, his/her reflection is like a "funhouse" mirror. (Distorted)
-Meal times have become extremely ritualistic- e.g. the individual will insist on eating in the same bowl, he/she will cut their food into tiny pieces, he/she will not let the articles of food on the plate touch one another, he/she will keep on moving food around the plate to make it appear as if something has been eaten, etc.
-The individual uses excessive laxatives, diuretics, or diet pills to control weight.

When your anorexic, your not getting the nutrients your body needs to keep going. It reduses the blood flow and you loose tons of your energy. Soon you become pale and very fragile and your organs stop working properaly.

You could end up in the hospital. You may die because of the lack of nutrients. Also it is not healthy for your heart to be anorexic.

Well you need food and nutrients to survive and now if you dont have any of that you can end up fainting, and if you've been anorexic for a really long time you could become really unhealthy. Also the things you can get is heart problems. Ive seen it on TV and its just so horrable! You will feel dead because you wont have any strength. But please dont do this to yourself. There is other ways to loose weight. Just eat healthy!! x0`♥

not_your_star34 answered Tuesday June 7 2005, 10:50 pm:
Anorexia is bad for you because you lose nutrients, like you said. Anorexics usually become weaker because of that. If it's a girl, they usually skip periods. For more, look on this site:

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

But I'll explain another reason why it's bad to be anorexic: You gain all of the weight back. Once you starve yourself, you don't get many nutrients, so your body goes into "starvation mode", and it sucks up every single nutrient it can get.

For instance, if you're anorexic, but you eat a cracker one day, your body will suck every single nutrient possible from that cracker, and it will store the nutrients (and everything else, too, like fats and sugars, because you need them too).

So, once you start eating normally again, your body will continue to be in starvation mode (your body will continue to store fats and all of the other things in foods), and that makes it easier to gain weight.
That's what my doctor told me, so I know that's how it goes.

I hope I helped, and if you have any more questions, feel free to leave one in my inbox!

Anorexia is bad for you because people are supposed to eat. You need nutrients to get through the day. You need food to live. Plus, who wants to weigh 90 pounds? Some peope have come close to death because of being anorexic, it's just not natural.

okay anorexia is bad for you, the reason is yes it makes you loose all the nutrients but not all that... you have no energy.. your body needs engery to work off of and when you don't eat your body can't get any energy so therefore your body can not perform and dies quickly... you start passing out etc. because you will have NO energy...

hope i helped...

chocolate_slave answered Tuesday June 7 2005, 10:17 pm:
There are definitely many symptoms of anorexia. First off, you will feel very weak and tired, fatigue like you said, because you're not getting enough calories to have energy to do anything. As such, the person will usually lose interest in everything around them. They will often feel light-headed as if they were walking on air. Physical symptoms include habits during mealtime. It is known that an anorexic tends to divide their food into sections and eat them section by section so that it makes them feel "fuller", in a way creating an illusion to their brain. They tend to play with their food a lot and making a lot of clanking sounds with the cutlery, to give the impression that they're not eating. If really forced to eat, they will usually stick to a certain type of food, for example, vegetables.

By medical standards, a person is considered anorexic when they lose 15% of their original body weight. You cannot judge a person on whether they have eating disorders or not by just looking at them, because some people are born to have fast metabolisms, like me.

Being anorexic is definitely bad for you in many ways. Your body needs calories to function and if you're starving yourself and depriving your body of the calories it needs, it wouldn't function, basically saying that you would pass out from time to time because of the deprivation and die eventually if the problem is not solved.

In case you would like to know, starving does not necessarily cause you to lose weight. Why? Well, when you eat, your body takes some calories from the food to store and use as energy. When you start starving yourself, your body is convinced and thinks it's on a hunger strike so it immediately stores EVERYTHING as fat, or calories, the next time you eat, whether it may be a celery stick or a ..I don't know, anything. A person usually cannot starve for too long, especially when there's food around them, and might tend to binge once in a while to comfort their stomach and like I said, because your body thinks its on a hunger strike, everything will be stored as fat. Of course, in the long run you WILL lose weight, but you have to gain it first in order to lose it. Anorexia also leads to binge eating, and bulimia.

I know it's long but I had to do a report on this. I hope I helped.=]

well..its not just physical symptoms..there are mental symptoms. if you find yourself looking in the mirror and being horrified at yourself when all your friends are amazed how much weight you have dropped so quickly...thats a sign

if you go on the scale and see that o...i dont know...maybe lost 20 lbs in 1 - 1 1/2 months..and you still arent satisfied..

if you find yourself eating a crouton (stuff u put in salad) for dinner...or if you only eat lettuce..or something crazy..theres a sign

I cant tell you that anorexia is bad or that its so. It is a deseas one that is hard and tough to get through because well, i used to be. Anorexia made me things i never knew could happen to me. I didnt notice this but when i realy was noticed anorexic it was hard for me to breathe, walk, sleep, be put in cold air, i was getting more sick lyk sneezing, my liver was failing, i became more hungry than i have ever been and i thaught i was going to die. When i stoped eating any food my muscle wich keeps you warm will deterait with your fat. so basicly you become skin and bones. no muscle no nothing. then my liver stoped working for a while beacause i wasnt getting enough nutrients that i needed. it became harder for me to sleep because i would piss in the middle of the night in my bed because i couldnt hold my piss. then everytime i put even the smallest piece of food in me i would gain lyk 5 punds. now these r some things that happened to me. i became normal over time but im still suffering. i cant say that you should stop becoming anorexic and all that, if your r. but if you r willing to shut down your body for it.

Michele answered Tuesday June 7 2005, 9:24 pm:
Well it can scew up your electrolites balance. Things like potassium, salt, and sugar too which your brain needs. YOur body turns carbs into sugar. If you don't get enough of those, or too much of one, and not enough of the other, then you could have a heart attack. Most anorecix's die of heart failure. OF course they look dead long before they actually are.
