Book-Banning

Question Posted Friday March 18 2005, 12:22 am

Tomorrow, i have a Persuasive essay to turn in, which I will later have to read to my English class.

My topic is on book-banning, and i've typed up my essay, and it's all set.

My problem is, is that my last reason for why book-banning from schools and libraries isn't right, is because books are sometimes banned because of homosexual characters.

At first, i felt strongly about stating my opinion through an essay on my opinion on homosexuallity (I'm for gay marriage), but now, I'm having second doubts. Can someone please tell me how they think this will go over in my class, and is it appropriate? (This is Advanced 8th grade Eglish by the way)

I think you have a good and relevant idea, but because it is a potentially sensitive topic for some of the people you are speaking to, you need to substantiate it a little to avoid just making weak assertions that will stir up some mixed responses.

The problem with talking about a subject you really believe in is that it's easy to go off on a tangent when it's not 100% relevant, and this won't earn you points, so have what you are going to say particuarly carefully planned. If you are going to include political-sensitive topics, you also have to be careful about possibly offending people, or stiring up trouble. Keep you argument succint and reasonably neutral. Try to avoid blanket statements along the lines of 'the government shouldn't ban books with homosexual characters because there is nothing wrong with homosexuality', as any one who disagrees with you on that point (and sadly, there are far too many...) will just shoot you down. Instead try to keep things more neutral and keep to claims about what it is and isn't appropriate for the government to be censoring, and that they shouldn't censor literature from young readers simply because of personal preference or tryign to control young people's developing political beliefs. You could also argue that it is religious reasons (you know, the "in Leviticus it says..." type thing) that are used as arguments against homosexuality, and that these should never be used to back up government policy shouldn't be based on religious claims in a secular government. These type of arguments keep the central question about book banning at the centre and arguments about homosexuality perpheral, which will help you stay focused and avoid confrontation about your choice of subject. Good luck.

You should never be afraid to express your feelings. I agree, gay people deserve to love just as much as straight people do. It's just another form of segragation to say that they don't deserve what we do. It's no different than saying that colored people don'd deserve what white folk do. Did you know that homosexual people used to hold athuorative powers in Native American tribes? I think it's rude and inconsiderate to judge them now. As for book banning. How stupid is that. What ever happened to freedom of expression, this country is taking a turn for the worse.
Luv ya lot's, hope my advice helps:

It's your opinion and its a valid point so of course ita appropriate. if some people cant handle it then its their problem you shouldnt have to compromiseon your opinions just because some people might not like it. as long as you dont just say that your opinion is righ but do it respectivly to others theni think it will go downwell
hope it helped!

While I agree with your opinion it may be a bit much for 8th grade. Then again I suppose it is (unfortunatley) a reason why the school might ban a book.

Leave it in, tell the teacher before class your leaving it in. But ask his/her opinion on weather or not to read that part in class. How's that?

I, personally, feel that it is appropiate. I mean, it is advanced 8th grade. I'm with you, and am for gay marriage. I feel pretty strong about it, and can usually put up a decent fight. Anyways, I think if you can back up why you are for it, go for it.
Goodluck, I hope everything works out!

Hope I helped!

First off, I appreciate that you are not one of the slow, dimwhitted people that write off anyone different from you as a freak. Second, though technically you are on the side of good, your teacher might not think so. Talk it over with your teacher first and ask him or her if it is ok. Then take a look at the climate of the class and if they are open minded enough to accept what you have to say as your opinion. If you happen to live in the South, then I sugest that you hold your toungue until you get to college.

So you're ending with a bang. I think you should keep it. Be ready to stand your ground. Just because you chose it as an argument, doesn't mean that you will get speared for it grade wise. It is a real issue in a real world. Lawyers have to come up with arguments they don't necessarily believe in all the time, which is why people don't trust them. It's not like you are graphically representing the sex act itself. Since it is an advanced class, hopefully the people in it are more mature and can handle a mature argument.

TheTeenGirl answered Friday March 18 2005, 1:02 am:
I think that you should just let it go. People won't kill you for not mentioning your opinion on gay marriage, just go on with your essay, you shoudn't try to get a debate going in your class, and 8th graders will debate because usually they make fun of gay people, so its probably not appropriate, there are lots of things that aren't right, but you still have to deal with it, so I say to drop it.

Sherry answered Friday March 18 2005, 12:51 am:
I think you should have asked your teacher about writing this first, but I wouldent really worry too much. As long as your mature in your essay and dont use slang terms, and are not bashing a group of people and/or their beliefs. [Like the people that are against gay marraige]. You should be fine!
