sore throat

Question Posted Sunday January 30 2005, 5:32 pm

I have an extremely sore throat. It wouldn't be a big deal but I have singing try-outs for the school play on Tuesday. Does anyone know how to heal a sore throat fast? Thanks.

dont talk a lot,drink tea

**To ease a viral sore throat at home, treat the other symptoms of your cold as well. Your sore throat may be caused by drainage from your sinuses. In this case, blow your nose often so the drainage doesn’t drip down your throat. Also, sleep with your head elevated. Run a humidifier or vaporizer near your bed so your throat doesn’t dry out in the night, especially if your stuffy nose causes you to breathe through your mouth.

Remember the old saltwater treatment your mother prescribed? It’s still one of the most effective home treatments for easing sore throats. Pour yourself a glass of warm water and dissolve a couple of teaspoons of salt in it. Then buck up and gargle the stuff. Initially it will make you cringe, but your throat will feel better almost immediately.

If you simply can’t stand the thought of gargling saltwater, you can find throat lozenges at the drugstore. Lozenges containing Vitamin C and Zinc may help you get over your cold faster, but only if you begin taking them as soon as you notice symptoms. **<<right from the internet

DONT TALK!! save your voice and drink lots of hot liquids, this way all the junk in your throat will be washed out. just dont talk a lot or else it will get worse and worse. Before your tryouts drink water, but not too much that would make you feel sick! tell me how it goes!!

Rest your voice, avoid any kind of anaesthetic throat drops. If it stops hurting you'll sing over the pain and do yourself damage. Drink loads of water, luke warm if you can hack it, gargle with asprin and wear a scarf. Stupid but trust me. I use honey with hot water and a few cloves but above all, don't talk unless you have too. Hope you feel better :o)

Whenever I get a sore throat, I use Hall's cough drops. Even though they are for when you cough, they still work. Try drinking water and if your voice isn't that great, drinking tea with honey helps clears your throat and you'll get your voice back. Hope I helped :)

Maybe you can drink some herbal tea that clears the glands? Or some honey drops. Works for me, I'm a singer and I always get sore throats at the worst times!

Try Robitussin, that usually works for me. You could also try gargling salt water. Warm compresses on your neck, too. I hope this helps, it's all I have right now.

Shelbyjune answered Sunday January 30 2005, 5:45 pm:
It depends on what type of sore throat it is. Does it come from drips in the back, like post-nasal drip (sinus, colds, allergies)? Or could it be something more serious like strepth, which means singing could be really destructive on it?
Anyway, I have done extensive research on quick ways to help sore throats, having done opera, choir and musical theatre for about 40 years.
The first thing I need to tell you is to never, I repeat NEVER drink or swallow concentrated lemon juice or even lemon juice in warm water, not even lemonade. All that does is work up the phlegm in your throat and that doesn't help clear it, it actually aggravates it.

OK, here we go. This will be long.
(1)If you can tolerate slippery elm bark, there is tea that contains it. Gypsy Cold Care and Throat Coat are some names that you can get at health stores.
(2) Also, slippery elm bark is in lozenges. Personally, I don't like the taste.
(3) If you like the taste of licorice (this is my favorite), Luden's Honey Licorice Throat Drops are the best. Rite Aid and Long's Drugs carry them, at $1.99 per bag (you can also get small boxes of them at Walgreen's for about $1.00). These are mild in menthol, and are soothing but not drying.
(4) Drink hot, sweet tea -- honey is best, but I don't like the taste of hot honey, so I use sugar.
(5) And, of course, the age old PLENTY OF WATER to keep you hydrated.
(5) Believe it or not, chicken soup has medicinal qualities that no one has ever been able to fully understand, but it works.
(6) Are you ready for this? STOP TALKING!!! You need to rest you voice and the back of your throat.
Hope I helped. Bocca Lupo for your singing try-outs (that's opera talk, like "break a leg" in the theatre). Let me know how you do!

Siren_Cytherea answered Sunday January 30 2005, 5:45 pm:
Oh, I feel your pain. I had a cough/laryngitis right before a performance and I wanted to kill something.
Halls strawberry (or cherry) vapor action cough drops help with the soreness. My friend told me about these, and they're seriously life savers.
Natural flavor Ricola help with the voice not cooperating. My old choir teacher's trick. ^_^
Guzzle water. Every singer's trick.
Hot tea with honey. My friend's trick.
You can actually put lemon juice (NO SWEETENER) in your water (or hot water/lemon juice) to help cut through some of the acid and/or phlegm you undoubtedly have. Voice teacher's idea.
No dairy before the tryouts (it coats your throat and will hinder your singing, even if you're not sick).
Warm your voice up slowly, starting with a relaxed hum. Don't sing too much before the auditions. Try your HARDEST not to talk on the phone. That's one of the worst things you can do with laryngitis or anything affecting your voice. My old choir teacher told me that. Not sure why, but it's true.
I hope this helps, and I hope you heal!
-Siren =)
